HEAD COACH WEBB HATCH

WEBB HATCH HEAD COACH 18th Season at Frostburg Webb Hatch begins his 18th season as the head men’s basketball coach at Frostburg State University as well as his 43rd year of coaching in 2016-17. In his first 17 years at the helm, Hatch has guided the Bobcats to 200 overall wins including 90 in the AMCC and 35 in their first six years as a member of the CAC. The winningest coach in the program’s 74-year history, Hatch has also led FSU to one Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament championship, a pair of AMCC Tournament second-place finishes and one Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Runner-Up showing. Last winter, Frostburg posted a 7-18 overall mark that included five wins in the CAC and a runner-up showing at the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament. FSU collected four wins in five games during the middle part of their schedule and led the CAC in rebounds (38.4) and blocks (5.5). The Bobcats also finished fifth in the CAC in three-pointers (162) and fourth in steals (7.4). Frostburg finished with a 10-15 overall record and barely missed out on the CAC Tournament during the 2014-15 season. In late November, the Bobcats upset then 13th-ranked Randolph Macon 76-67, part of a four-game winning streak for the Bobcats. In 2013-14, FSU finished the year 3-22 with a 2-14 slate in the CAC. The Bobcats finished second in the CAC in rebounding (37.5) and fifth in blocks (2.7 per game). Senior Jabari Kamau finished his junior season fourth in the league in rebounding, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game. In 2012-13, FSU finished with 10 wins and earned a berth in the CAC Tournament following a fifth-place regular-season finish. The Bobcats finished third in the conference in scoring (69.8), third in rebounding (35.2) and third in field goals made (643). Senior Christian Jackson finished second in NCAA Division III in scoring (25.8), set FSU’s single-season scoring mark and finished just seven points shy of setting the CAC scoring record. In 2011-12, Frostburg posted an even 13-13 overall record, but grabbed 10 wins in the CAC and made a trip to the CAC Tournament. Frostburg led the league in scoring (72.4), tied for the conference lead in steals (9.7) and finished second in field goals (682), three-pointers (158), offensive rebounding (13.4) and assists (12.9). In 2010-11, Hatch became the school’s all-time winningest coach after leading the team to 11 wins. With a victory over Stevenson in mid-January, Hatch surpassed Oscar Lewis for the all-time wins mark. Hatch and the Bobcats kicked off the 2010-11 season in fine fashion with three-straight victories and the 2010 Pride of Maryland Tournament Championship. FSU downed No. 11 ranked St. Mary’s in the title game to capture the school’s first title in the POM Tournament.

est two-year total in the program’s history (trailing only the 37 wins from 1970-1972). In 2000-01, the Bobcats finished 20-10 and captured their only AMCC Tournament championship and earned a berth to the ECAC Southern Region Championship Tournament for the eighth time in school history. Hatch joined the Frostburg State staff in late August 1999 and needed just one year to turn around the Bobcats. After a 6-19 overall record and a 2-10 mark in the AMCC in his first season, Hatch’s second squad went 20-10 (8-4 AMCC), the biggest improvement from the previous season by any NCAA Division III program in the country. Hatch came to Frostburg after having served as an assistant at Virginia Military Institute, his alma mater, for the 1998-99 season. Prior to his stint at VMI, Hatch was the first-ever head men’s basketball coach at Division III Marymount University in Arlington, Va., for 10 seasons, where he also served as the school’s assistant athletic director and sports information director. Hatch led Marymount to a 13-9 record in his debut season. In 1990-91, he earned Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Saints to the CAC regular-season championship and a 16-11 overall record. He also led Marymount to an 18-10 record and the CAC Tournament championship in 1991-92. His Marymount teams also advanced to the CAC tournament championship game in the 1990-91 and 1995-96 seasons. Prior to Marymount, Hatch served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Va., from 1977 to 1987, where he helped coach the Marlins to two Dixie Conference championships and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Additionally, Hatch served as head coach at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk, Va., from 1975 to 1977. He coached the boys’ team to a 23-3 record and the VAAC

SEASON PREVIEW Welcome Back Head coach Webb Hatch returns two starters, including the Bobcats’ second-leading scorer from last year and one of the nation’s premier shot blockers. Frostburg finished with seven wins, five in the Capital Athletic Conference and it finished runner-up at the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament. A year ago, the Bobcats finished fifth in the nation in blocks per game (5.5) and 13th in the country in total blocks (137). FSU also led the CAC in total rebounds (38.4) behind league-leading numbers in both offensive (12.8) and defensive (25.7) rebounds. Hatch’s squad was second in the conference in assists (12.9), fourth in steals (7.4) and sixth in scoring (69.8 ppg). Entering his 18th year at the helm of the Bobcats, he picked up his 300th career win as a collegiate head coach and 200th victory at Frostburg last season. He is winningest coach in the 74-year history of the FSU men’s basketball program. Around the CAC Frostburg was picked to finish 10th in a preseason vote of the Capital Athletic Conference coaches. The Bobcats received a total of 13 points, just three behind Southern Virginia for ninth in the preseason standings. Getting Offensive Junior guard/forward Tyler Michael returns to the Bobcat roster for his third season and he enters the year as Frostburg’s biggest offensive threat after finishing second on the team in scoring a year ago (13.9 ppg). Michael paced the team with 134 baskets and was third with 24 three-pointers. He also finished fourth with 104 rebounds and was second with 23 steals. A native of Cumberland, Md., Michael scored in double figures in 18 games, including six games of 20 points or more. He registered a season-high 27 against Penn State Harrisburg in early February. Junior Dalton Gaus averaged 5.4 points per game for the Bobcats last season and Hatch and his staff expect more from him this winter. Gaus, a native of Cumberland, Md., totaled 114 points with 37 rebounds and 20 three-pointers as sophomore. He opened the season with three-straight games of 10 more points and he registered a season-high 17 in win over Marymount. Getting Defensive A true rim protector, junior Zachary Coalmon (6-7) has emerged as one of the nation’s premier shot blockers. He scored 71 points and pulled down 106 rebounds as a sophomore, but his specialty is blocking shots. Coalmon finished sixth in the nation in blocked shots per game (3.21) and 12th in

MICHAEL

the country in total blocks (77). To put it in perspective, Coalmon rejected 77 shots, nearly 30 ahead of the next closest player in the CAC, blocked five or more shots in a game five times and notched seven blocks in a contest three times. Two years ago in his third collegiate game of his career, he captured Frostburg’s school record after blocking 10 shots against Randolph. Occupying the other position in the post with Coalmon will be sophomore Edwin Cole (6-6). He scored 76 points in 17 games last year with 98 rebounds and totaled 22 blocks and 14 steals. Over the final 10 games of his freshman campaign, Cole averaged nearly six points per contest and over six rebounds per game. He collected a season-best five blocks against Southern Virginia in early February. “We want to see more of a scoring presence from Edwin this season after the lateseason momentum as a freshman,” said Hatch. At The Point A trio of newcomers will fill out the point position for Hatch’s squad and he is very impressive with their play throughout preseason thus far. Freshman Rashawn Johnson, freshman Lawrence Pettis, Jr. and freshman Obediah Stith will be asked to push the ball up the floor and score for this Bobcat team. “We want to play faster this year,” said Hatch. “The three point guards that we recruited all seem to fit fight that role and they are pretty good at pushing the ball up the floor.” Additional Scoring Junior Chris Coston, junior transfer Gregory Gibbs and freshman Daniel Alexander will be valuable contributors for the Bobcats this winter and all four bring something different to the lineup. Coston has been part of Hatch’s offensive and defensive system for three years now and should add to last year’s numbers. A very athletic player with great defensive skills, Coston appeared in 22 games last season, totaled 39 points and grabbed 35 rebounds. When asked about Gibbs, Hatch noted that he is a very good defender, has threepoint range and can score from anywhere on the floor. Meanwhile, Alexander can run the floor and finish around the rim. He also possesses good defender skills. Senior Duo The ‘16-17 version of the Bobcats feature a pair of seniors in Terry Martin and Jake Weigand. Martin missed last season with an injury, but played in three games in 2014-15. A year ago, Weigand played in two games for Frostburg.
