CARRIE SAUNDERS Head Coach 4th Season

Carrie Saunders enters her fourth year as the head coach of the Frostburg State women’s basketball team in 2017-18. A year ago Saunders helped guide the Bobcat women’s team to their first Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament appearance since 2012-13 and also became the first Frostburg head coach to earn Coach of the Year honors by the league. Saunders was named the CAC’s Co-Coach of the Year, while sophomore guard Victoria Diggs was named the CAC Rookie of the Year. Diggs averaged 11.3 points per game and senior forward Kirsten Rayner, an All-CAC Second Team selection, concluded the 2016-17 season sixth in the conference in scoring at 13.2 PPG. Frostburg finished the 2016-17 season second in the conference in steals (11.8), third in scoring average (68.0), third in three pointers made (160), third in assists (14.4) and fourth in blocks (4.1). In 2015-16, Frostburg collected three wins and finished runner-up in the Jim Crawley Tournament for the second-straight season. The Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC in offensive rebounding (14.8), sixth in assists (12.5), sixth in blocks (3.5), seventh in total rebounding (39.2) and eighth in three-pointers made (86). The Bobcats capped the 2014-15 campaign with five wins in their final eight games. FSU finished 6-19 overall and was runner-up at the Jim Crawley Tournament. Saunders took over the reins of the program after serving as a graduate assistant for the last two years. The Bobcats saw steady improvement during her two seasons as an assistant. Frostburg increased its win total in each season, and capped the 2013-14 campaign with five wins in its final nine games. The Bobcats scored 19 points per game higher than the 2012-13 campaign and finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference at 68.8 PPG. In addition to its improved scoring, FSU led the league in offensive rebounds (17.3) and finished second in total rebounds (42.5), steals (13.2) and blocks (3.4). Saunders came to Frostburg after a four-year playing career at NCAA Division II Shepherd University. She finished 14th in school history in scoring and ranked second in field goals made and attempts during her career. As a junior, she was the recipient of both the Coach’s Award and Sara Cree Distinguished Athlete honor. Saunders completed her master’s degree in education from Frostburg State in May 2015 and received her bachelor’s degree in communication and new media from Shepherd in 2011.

Ma rrysa Moye r Assistant Coach Third Season Lock Haven ‘15

Marrysa Moyer begins her second season as the team’s top assistant coach in 2017-18. Moyer was an integral part to the Bobcats turnaround in 2016-17, which saw the team post 12 wins and make their first appearance in the CAC Tournament since the 201213 season. Frostburg finished the 2016-17 season second in the conference in steals (11.8), third in scoring average (68.0), third in three pointers made (160), third in assists (14.4) and fourth in blocks (4.1). Despite a rebuilding year in 2015-16 where the Bobcats finished 3-22, Moyer helped guide FSU to an appearance in the championship game at the 2015 Jim Crawley Tournament. Moyer helped develop junior transfer Kirsten Rayner, who posted nine double-double efforts and led the Bobcats with 13.4 points per game, 8.4 rebounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game. Rayner shot 46.8 percent from the floor and 60.7 percent at the free throw line, and finished second in the Capital Athletic Conference with 74 offensive rebounds. Off the court, the Bobcats placed three players on the Academic All-CAC list, increasing that number from the previous season. A 2015 graduate from Lock Haven University with a bachelor’s of science degree in sports administration and a minor in business, Moyer joins the Bobcats after a successful four-year collegiate playing career. Moyer started her collegiate career at Mansfield University, where she spent her freshman season as a starter and was a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week selection. After transferring to Lock Haven, Moyer had an outstanding playing career and has etched her name into the Bald Eagles’ record books. She has scored 1,109 total career points and is second all-time in rebounds per game (9.35) and offensive rebounds (243). Moyer is also second all-time in rebounds with 901, fourth in blocked shots with 70, and fifth in free throws made with 286 in her three years at Lock Haven. As a three-year starter at LHU, she was named a Second Team All-PSAC selection. Prior to her collegiate career, Moyer was a four-year starter at Altoona Area High School, where she was a team captain and scored over 1,000 career points. Moyer is currently pursuing a master’s in business administration at Frostburg State.

Ol i vi a Ca l l a n Assistant Coach First Season Shenandoah ‘17

It was announced in August (2017) by Frostburg head women’s basketball coach Carrie Saunders that Olivia Callan will serve as the program’s graduate assistant for the upcoming 201718 season. Callan comes to Frostburg after a four-year playing career at Shenandoah University from 2013-17. She was a two-year starter for the Hornets and appeared in 90 games, while averaging over 5.0 points per game. She was also voted team captain for both her junior and senior seasons. She earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a minor in business from SU this past May. Last March, Callan participated in the “So You Want To Be A Coach” program through the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in Dallas, Texas. For the last three years, Callan has served as the Director of Sports Camps at Howard County Parks and Recreation, while last spring, she served as an intern in the Shenandoah strength and conditioning program.

2017-18 Season Preview

Frostburg took a big step forward a year ago and fourth-year head coach Carrie Saunders will carry that momentum into the 2017-18 season with the return of several key players and the addition of seven newcomers to this year’s roster.

KELLY

FSU also turned it on down the stretch, winning eight of their final 12 regular-season games. On Senior Day, the Bobcats erased the memory of an earlier season overtime time loss to Salisbury by downing the Sea Gulls 59-57 to lock up the fifth seed in the tournament. Frostburg finished third in the league in scoring (68.0) as three Bobcats averaged over 10 points per game. “We are using how we finished last season as momentum heading into this season,” said Saunders. “We can compete and we can win and the mentality that we are going after is that we’re not satisfied. We definitely are trying to keep that momentum as we head into this season.” “We talk about the teams we beat last year and if we want to get to the third or fourth spot in the CAC Tournament, we need to pick off a couple of other schools as well.” Look Who’s Back Saunders welcomes back nine players from the 2016-17 roster, including four that started 10 or more games. Saunders will also be able to lean on the return on her team’s second leading scorer and rebounder. Senior Sharyce Warren and sophomore Victoria Diggs averaged 12.3 and 11.3 points per game, respectively a year ago for a Bobcat squad that finished third in the CAC in scoring. Both Warren and Diggs were in their first year with the Bobcats a year ago and should improve on the court in their second year in the system.

Warren scored 10 or more points in 17 games and averaged 17.3 points per game over the final six games.

DIGGS

Diggs, the 2016-17 CAC Rookie of the Year, burst on the scene in her first year of collegiate basketball by finishing third on the roster and 17th in the league at 11.3 points per game. In her final game of the fall portion of the schedule, Diggs poured in a season-high 34 points and tied a school record with seven three-pointers.

Closer Look Frostburg increased its win total a season ago and it did so in impressive fashion. The Bobcats shook off a CAC Preseason Coaches Poll that had them slotted in last place to win 12 games, including the program’s first trip to the CAC Tournament in four seasons.

Warren was second on the team in scoring as a junior and was second with 76 assists in 24 games. On the other end of the floor, Warren was fifth in the league with 73 steals.

After a slow start to the season, she rebounded to score 10 or more points in 13 games. “Diggs and Sharyce returning to the guard position is huge for us,” said Saunders. “They are going to bring a lot of our scoring like they did last year.” Sophomores Sydney Stotler and Amanda Emory pulled down 153 and 129 rebounds as first-year players and will again lead the Bobcats in the post. Stotler averaged 4.8 points per game, while Emory averaged 6.7. “Sydney and Amanda are good core post players but we also want them to mentor some of the other players as well,” mentioned Saunders. The junior tandem of Megan Kelly and Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla will look to fill the void left by the graduation of Kache Fields. Kelly averaged 5.4 points per game, while Tirado-Viscalla appeared in 15 games. Senior Adjowa Pinkrah returns for her final season in a Bobcat uniform and she has been a consistent player throughout her four years. A year ago, she averaged 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in 19 games. “Yes we are bringing back four starters, but we also think Victoria Yoder is set for a special year and we feel she will be able replace some of what Kirsten brought to the table,” added Saunders. She is a scrappy rebounder and is undersized, but she works hard. Yoder averaged 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds for the Bobcats last winter. Junior Amber Downey returns for her third season after averaging 3.2 points per game in six contests last winter. Welcome to the ‘BURG Six newcomers fill out the 15- player lineup for Saunders and her staff. Saunders has pointed to the depth of this year’s roster following an injury filled 2016-17 campaign. This year’s list of newcomers consist of sophomore Crystal Tobery, along with first-year’s Grace Butera, Brittany Davis, Kayla Wilson, Amiya King and Marina Jones.

About Frostburg

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which

housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University

owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.

Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed

the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
