SEAN BROWN, Sr. HEAD COACH 1st Season Sean Brown, Sr. is entering his first season as the head basketball coach at Frostburg State in 2018-19. Brown is the 14th head coach in the 76–year history of the Bobcat program and he is no stranger to Frostburg, as he earned both his bachelor’s (2003) and master’s (2005) degrees from Frostburg and served as an assistant coach from 2002-04 and again from 2007-15. Brown inherited a Bobcat squad that returns three starters and eight total players from last year’s CAC Tournament team. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Brown has served as head coach at PittBradford for the last three seasons. Over his first two years at Bradford, Brown coached the Panther women’s basketball team to 34 wins, including two spots in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament. The Panthers led the AMCC in scoring both seasons, while in his first season, Brown’s team finished in the top-20 in Division III in both scoring and forced turnovers. Last season, Brown took over the reins of the Pitt-Bradford men’s program.

SEASON PREVIEW Led by first-year head coach Sean Brown Sr., the Frostburg State men’s basketball team will look to build off of a season in which they won 11 games and made a Capital Athletic Conference Tournament appearance. Brown returns to Frostburg as the 14th head coach in the program’s 76-year history after being a standout athlete for the Bobcat men’s team from 1997-02. As a player with FSU, he was a two-time captain and set a Frostburg single-season school record for threepoint shooting percentage. After he graduated, Brown served as a graduate assistant coach from 2002-04 where he assisted the Bobcats to 25 wins and an AMCC tournament appearance. Brown later came back as an assistant coach from 2007-15 and helped the Bobcats to 115 win, including back-to-back 17-win campaigns in 2008-09 and 2009-10. Brown has spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Pitt-Bradford, his first two seasons he was the head coach for the women’s basketball team and his last one he led the men’s team. “Coach Webb Hatch brought me back as his top assistant for eight years and I learned a lot over that time,” Brown said. “I got some valuable head coaching experience at PittBradford for three years coaching both men and women and it feels good to come back home and bring that experience with me back to where it all began.” Frostburg returns six players from last year’s team that finished 11-15, 9-9 in the conference and made the CAC Tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season as the fifth seed. The season featured two high-profile conference victories against No. 17 Christopher Newport and No. 7 York (Pa.). The season ended on the road in the first
ALEXANDER
round of the tournament in an 82-78 loss against Mary Washington. The Bobcats are looking for their first season with a winning-record since the 2009-10 season. Entering the season, Frostburg was selected 5th in the 2018 CAC Preseason Poll,
released on November 8. On The Offense The Frostburg offense will welcome three of its top four scorers back from last year’s team that averaged 76.8 points per game, the second-most in the CAC. Forward Edwin Cole returns for his senior season for the Bobcats after scoring 316 points and leading the conference with 111 offensive rebounds, which set a new Frostburg single-season record. Last season Cole was named to the All-CAC Second Team, averaging
PETTIS
a double-double with 12.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. “Cole is coming back with a ton of confidence. He’s in the gym five or six days a week working on his shot, working on his ball handling and working on his mobility,” Brown said about his returning senior. “We already know what he can do from a defensive aspect, it’s just exciting to see now how much his game flourishes on the offensive end.” Junior guards Lawrence Pettis Jr. and Daniel Alexander both return after scoring 339 points and 336 points respectively for last year’s squad. Pettis also led the team with 47 three-pointers and 138 assists, which also led the conference. Alexander brought down 60 offensive rebounds, putting him sixth on the conference leaderboard. On The Defense The Bobcats will try to improve on defense as they allowed an average of 79.7 points per game last season, the highest total in the conference. They did, however lead the conference in rebounds per game, 40.62, and blocked shots per game, 5.0, which are stats they will look to improve upon even further in this upcoming campaign. “We return our second, third and fourth leading scorers, which is great, but we want to

“We’re looking good when it comes to returners,” Brown said about his returning players. “Pettis, our ultimate point guard, is the ultimate competitor, he’ll run through a wall for you. Patterson is stepping up, Griffith is providing some leadership and shooting from the wing position and Lighty seems to have a stranglehold on the backup point guard position, but it’s a competition every day and we have some hungry first-years in the gym.” Up And Comers The Bobcats have 13 new members on their basketball squad that fans should get excited about, eight of which are first-years. The challenge for a coaching staff when it comes to new players is taking what they know from high school and previous colleges, break down what the players learned from their previous systems, and then teach them how the Bobcats play. Coach Brown is looking forward to seeing what this group of new players can bring to help the Bobcats win games. “Bo Schene is a really strong wing player who can shoot the ball and get to the basket and Jamil Jones is a really fine athlete who can do a lot of things with the ball,” Brown said about some of his first-years. “Nick Johnson, in my opinion, has been the standout first-year thus far. He’s hungry, he wants to work and he wants to be a really good basketball player. Blake Hatcher, a kid who we thought was going to be a developmental project has really opened a lot of eyes so far.” 2018-19 Season Opener Frostburg opens its 2018-19 home slate with a non-conference match at home in Bobcat Arena on November 17 at 7:30 p.m. against Penn State-Altoona.
build our team around defense,” Brown said. “I’m a defensive-minded coach and I feel like we’re doing a really good job early on teaching the defensive concepts.” Senior Zachary Coalmon, who transferred to the University of Maryland last season, has returned for this season after playing for the Bobcats from 2014-17. In his junior season, the 6-foot-10-inch center led the CAC and finished second in the nation with a Frostburgrecord 94 blocks, including at least one block in every game that season. “He was the first kid I called,” Brown said about Coalmon after he found out he was Frostburg’s new head coach. “I knew what his impact was and I knew what he could bring to the program. Having Zach back in the fold as that defensive stopper gives us some creative freedom to do some different things with some of our other players.” Pettis is looking to build off a season where he led the Bobcats and was fifth in the conference with 48 steals. Cole led the league with 68 blocks and 163 defensive rebounds giving him a league-leading total of 274 boards. Alexander ranked second on the team last season in both steals and blocks, with 38 and 23 respectively. “We should see a leap in Daniel’s scoring this year and also his defense has picked up,” Brown said of Alexander. “He’s long, athletic and quick, so we can take defense to the
GRIFFITH
next level with him. I’m very excited to coach Daniel.” Veteran Experience Also returning this season is junior guard Desmond Lighty and sophomores Sean Patterson and Trystan Griffith. These three, along with Cole, Pettis, Alexander and Coalmon are the players who are familiar with the Bobcat way and will look to pass what they know on to the newcomers of the program.
