Frostburg State University Track & Field Dale Luy Head Coach Fifth Season Dale Luy is entering his fifth year at the helm of the Frostburg State University track & field teams in 2011-12. Luy has been highly successful during his four-year tenure with the Bobcat programs. Last spring, Luy guided the Bobcats through their first year as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. The FSU men finished fourth while the women were fifth. Five men grabbed All-CAC honors, led by two first-team awards for sophomore Chauncey Manson, while senior Emily Furr was the lone female to earn all-conference honors. During the outdoor season, nine of Luy’s student-athletes appeared in either the NCAA or ECAC Championships. Furr represented FSU at the NCAA and ECAC Outdoor Championships in the triple jump while seven other Bobcats represented Frostburg at the ECAC’s. As a team, the Bobcats collected six All-ECAC honors with top-five finishes in the women’s triple jump, men’s 200-meter dash and the men’s 4x100-meter relay. Frostburg had just as much success at the ECAC Indoor Championships as six athletes participated. Furr qualified in the triple jump, Manson earned a spot in the 200-meter dash and freshman Morgan Carroll competed in the 500-meter dash. The Bobcat 4x200meter relay team also ran at the ECAC Championships. In 2009-10, a pair of Luy’s student-athletes qualified for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Junior Emily Furr hit provisional marks in both the triple jump and high jump and sophomore David Thomas automatically qualified for the long jump. Luy also had 10 athletes qualify for the ECAC Championships during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Bobcat women’s team captured fifth-place finishes at both the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Championships and the Mason-Dixon Invitational during the outdoor season. On the men’s side, the Bobcats captured a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Marietta College Invitational in January and the Don Frail Invitational at Marietta in April. In 2008-09, Luy guided the Bobcat women’s team to a ninth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Senior Sumer Rohrs and sophomore Emily Furr captured a combined three All-American honors during the outdoor championships while Rohrs captured national championships in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles and was named the USTFCCCA Division III National Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. On the men’s side, senior Brian Leiter earned All-American honors in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs. Luy also led the women’s team to the 2009 Mason-Dixon Conference Championship with a slim 123-122 victory over defending champion Christopher Newport. Furr was named the Field Athlete of the Meet while Luy was named the Coach of the Meet. During the 2008-09 indoor season, Luy led the women’s team to a 21st place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Rohrs earned her third-straight national title in the 55-meter hurdles while Leiter earned All-American honors in the one mile run. Rohrs set the NCAA Division III national record in the 55-meter hurdles (7.84) was named the indoor championships Track Athlete of the Meet. During the 2007-08 indoor season, Luy helped the Bobcats to an individual national

champion and All-American, an ECAC Champion and four All-ECAC selections and five individual Mason-Dixon Conference Champions. Luy had even more success during the outdoor season, as he again led Frostburg State to a individual national champion and a pair of All-American finishers. He helped the Bobcats collect two ECAC Championships, three All-ECAC awards and six individual Mason-Dixon Conference champions. Luy also serves as FSU’s head cross country coach. This past fall season, the FSU men and women each finished sixth at the CAC Championships. Senior Anne Patron grabbed All-CAC honors after finishing in second place. Luy, who brought over 30 years of coaching experience to FSU spanning both the high school and collegiate levels, comes to Frostburg having spent the prior three years as an assistant coach at Gettysburg College. While with the Bullets, he worked with the throwing events and pole vault. He had one NCAA Div. III provisional qualifier (men’s discus), two Centennial Conference women’s discus champions, one conference women’s pole vault champion and one conference men’s javelin champion. His athletes also set six school records and 16 all-time top ten performances. Before Gettysburg, Luy served as the head track & field coach for six years at Elizabethtown Area High School. He had 14 PIAA District III qualifiers, two state qualifiers and set two school records. He directed the renovation and new placement of the track and field facilities working with engineers, architects and district officials. From 1996-2005, Luy was the head coach for the winter track and field program at Elizabethtown Area High School as well. He had two athletes qualify for the state indoor championships. His athletes also set 13 school records and claimed over 70 all-time top five performances. During his time as the head of the winter program, he was an assistant during the spring season from 1995-1999. He led his runners to four school records, one PIAA silver medal and two PIAA state medals. While working with the high school, Luy was the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at nearby Elizabethtown College from 1986-1998. He had multiple Middle Atlantic States Conference Academic honorees including a Rhodes Scholar in 1994. He guided the women’s team to 10-consecutive winning seasons, school record in wins (10) twice and second place MAC finishes in 1993 and 1994. On the men’s side, he led the team to backto-back winning seasons in 1990 and 1991 for the first time in 24 years.

Frostburg State University Track & Field Luy also initiated the indoor and outdoor track and field club teams at the college from 1987 thru 1997. Despite being just a club program, the teams competed against many varsity level programs including the MAC Indoor Championships. He has also served as an interim assistant coach at Dickinson College (1988) and the head track and field coach at Lower Dauphin High School (1983-1986). He holds numerous certificates including a USATF Level II certification in sprints/hurdles and American Red Cross certification in standard first aid and infant & child CPR. Luy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Gettysburg in 1978, Masters of Education in Teaching and Curriculum from Penn State - Harrisburg in 1991 and his Doctor in Sports Management from the United State Sports Academy in 2007. While at Gettysburg, Luy was a four-year letterwinner for the track and field teams taking home NCAA AllAmerican honors in 1976 as a member of the 440-yard relay team and 1977 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Kendall Luy

Kendall Luy was selected from a national search as the full-time assistant track & field coach for Frostburg State University in early August 2011. Luy served as a graduate assistant with the FSU track & field program for the last three years and played a vital role in the resurgence of the throwing events for both the men’s and women’s teams. Luy also served as one of the team’s primary recruiters during that time. The Bobcat throwers turned in successful results at several meets during both the indoor and outdoor seasons last year. Under Luy’s guidance, the Bobcats captured 16 top-10 finishes in the throwing events, including the men’s discus title at the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. Overall, the Bobcat men finished fourth while the women were fifth in Frostburg’s first year as a member of the CAC. At the Ohio Open in early May, a meet consisting primarily of NCAA Division I and II schools, the FSU throwers set 18 personal records and recorded 20 top-10 finishes. In the two previous years, Luy helped the Bobcat teams to numerous top-10 finishes, including the 2008-09 Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championship title and a ninth-place overall finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor National Championships. Luy arrived at FSU after a four-year athletic career with the Susquehanna track & field program. While there, she participated in the javelin, shot put, sprints and relays. She was an NCAA Division III National provisional qualifier in the javelin in 2008 and was a Landmark Conference All-Academic Team selection during the 2007-08 year. She was also a three-time All-Middle Athletic All-Conference selection. In 2003, she participated in the USATF Junior Olympics at the regional championships. The four-year Dean’s List Scholarship student and Presidential Fellow, graduated in May 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in psychology. Until being hired at Frostburg State, Luy had worked at Bret’s Adventure, helping to facilitate activities which require social interaction skills, assist with home school lessons and provide support for autistic children. Luy was also the manager for the Office of Multicultural Affairs while at Susquehanna. Luy graduated this past May (2011) with her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Frostburg State University.

Nicole Farr

Nicole Farr enters her first year at Frostburg State as an athletic intern with the men’s and women’s track and cross country programs. Originally from Warrenville, Illinois, Farr is currently working towards her M.Ed. degree in sport administration from Bowling Green State University (OH). Farr received her B.A. in sport management and business communications from Calvin College (MI). At Bowling Green, Farr served as a graduate assistant in Student-Athlete Services, where she was involved with academic mentoring and StudentAthlete Affairs/Life Skills programming. She also served as a jogging instructor and research assistant for the Department of Human Movement, Sport, & Leisure Studies. Additionally, Farr competed for Bowling Green’s indoor track and field team in 2011, where she specialized in the mile and went on to race unattached during the

outdoor season. At Calvin College, Farr garnered multiple Academic All-American awards. On the track, she received All-American honors at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships after finishing sixth with her teammates in the distance medley relay. She was also a national provisional qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2009 and 2010. In cross country, Farr served as a co-captain for her team that placed third at the 2009 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships. In 2008, she gained All-Region honors and was a member of the national runner-up team. Outside of college athletics, Farr recently received her USATF Level I coaching certification and served as the head basketball coach at Bowling Green Christian Academy for 5th-8th grade girls. Farr has completed two Chicago marathons and continues to train as a member of Dave’s Racing Team based in Toledo, Ohio.

Katie Colburn

Katie Colburn will begin her first year as a graduate assistant at Frostburg State University. In her first season, Colburn will be working with the hurdlers, sprinters, and multi-event participants. Colburn comes to Frostburg after a successful track and field career at Kutztown University. She served as a team captain for her junior and senior seasons and earned All-America honors in her senior year after her Distance Medley Relay team finished seventh at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. In the outdoor season, Colburn would provisionally qualify for nationals in the heptathlon and the 400 hurdles. Also at Kutztown, Colburn earned Academic All-America honors in the spring of 2011. She was a member of the Dean’s List for each semester during her undergraduate career and was named a scholar athlete from 2007-2011. Colburn graduated in May of 2011 with a bachelor’s of science in electronic media with a concomitant in journalism and public relations. She is currently pursuing her M.B.A. at Frostburg.

Despite a wealth of newcomers on both the men’s and women’s track teams, head coach Dale Luy enters the 2011-2012 track and field season with high expectations for both squads. After finishing in the middle of the pack of the Capital Athletic Conference last year, the Bobcats are looking to break through in their second season in the conference. “On paper, both teams should be better than they were last year. On the men’s side we’ve got a nice mix of returners, new people and transfers.” The men will rely on some veteran leadership early as they return some key performers from last season in junior Chauncey Manson and senior Wes Jacobs. Manson will anchor the sprints for Frostburg; an area that Luy feels will be the strength of the team. Last season, Manson won the 200-meter dash a total of 11 times over the course of the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 200-meter dash for the both seasons. “We’ve got Chauncey back and we’ve got a bunch of new people that I suspect will push Chauncey.” Returning to push Manson and provide depth in the sprints are Jason Jackson and Xzavier Robertson. Jackson had eight top-ten finishes last season in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and ran a season-best 11.04 in the 100-meters to qualify for the ECAC Championships. Robertson ran primarily in the 100meter dash last season and recorded three top-ten finishes. Jackson, Roberston, and Manson return to lead a successful 4x100-meter relay team that finished fourth at the ECAC Championships last season and earned two victories. Jacobs, the reigning CAC conference champion in the 800-meters, returns after just missing the provisionally qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run last season. The 800-meters is clearly his “strong suit”, but he will run anywhere from the 400-meter dash to the 1,500meter run. Jacobs will also be counted on in the 4x400-meter relay. Jacobs is one of many cross country runners making the transition to the track season. Eric Williams is another top mid-distance returner. Similar to Jacobs, Williams’ best race is the 800-meters, as he finished fifth at the CAC Championships. He will also be competing for a spot on the 4x400-meter relay team. “Gavin (Caupp) and Pat Meade will be very good in the 1,500-meters and up. Pat has the potential to be very, very good.” Mead recorded a third-place finish at Marietta in the 1,000-meter run (2:09.19), and finished in the top-ten three times in the 1,500-meter run. Jesse Henderson is coming off a successful cross country season in which he was the top-finisher for the Bobcats at DeSales and Gettysburg, and will compete in the longer distance races in the track season. One event that the Bobcats have not had a consistent performer in in year’s past is the decathlon. Looking to fill that void will be freshman Devin Francillon and Anthony Schilling. Luy says that Francillon will excel in the sprint events, while Schilling will provide experience in the pole vault and javelin. Luy feels that along with the sprints, the throwing events will be a strong area for the Bobcats. Leading, the charge will be sophomore Ronald Troutman. “He’s got some real potential. He should be making a run at the school record.” Troutman placed fourth in the hammer throw (126’4.53”) at the CAC Outdoor Championships and added a victory in the weight throw (45’6.06”) at the Susquehanna Invite during the indoor season. Junior Christian Smith and sophomore Trey Davis also return to provide the Bobcat throwers with some more ammunition. Smith competed in the shot put, discus, and hammer throw last season, but excelled in the shot put. He recorded four top-five finishes in the event including earning fourth-place at the CAC Championships. Davis was right around the top-ten all season in the discus,

shot, and hammer throws and launched a throw of 33.22 meters in the hammer throw to finish eighth in the conference. The team also returns the top-two javelin throwers from last season in Jordan Calloway and Justin Fama. Calloway earned a second place finish at the Ohio Open last year, while Fama finished fifth. Frostburg’s best pole vaulter from last season, Calvin Shriver is also back. Shriver had a very successful season last spring, finishing second in the conference and adding three other top-five performances. The final field events are the jumps. “The triple jump is still going to be a big question mark for us, but we at least have some possibilities there and we really didn’t in the past.” Freshman Chris Rickell is looking to answer that question in his first season with Frostburg. Sprinter Xzavier Robertson and James Revere are both back and look to score some points as well. With the depth and leadership that returns for the Bobcats, along with the newcomers to the team Coach Luy has high expectations for the conference meet. “For our conference meet we definitely have the potential to score, I would say, more than one person in every event area.” The women’s track and field team will have plenty of new faces as they welcome ten newcomers to the team to go along with five returners. Despite the lack of experience, Luy is pleased with the talent on the team. “On the women’s side, the team is much larger and the quality of people we have is a big step up from last year.” Senior leader Amy Brennan is expected to show the youngsters the way early on. Brennan is coming off a solid outdoor season in which she won the 200-meter dash at the Juniata Invite (27.68) and was second in the 400-meters (1:03.71). Brennan added seven other top-ten finishes throughout the season. Erica Randolph looks to replace the void left by Danielle Wivell-Wagner in the throws. Last season, Randolph showed promise in the javelin after finishing in the top-ten four times. Four-time cross country all-conference selection Anne Patron will run in the outdoor season as she has no more eligibility indoors. Patron is one of six cross country runners that will compete on the track and field team this year. Luy highlighted Gabbi Maher as getting “significantly better” since the fall season. Looking to make an impact in their first season on the team will be Samantha Ebersole and Samantha Taylor. Both Sams will compete in the pole vault for Frostburg this season. Alexis Bush is another newcomer looking to score some points in the jumps, while Kara Kinyanjui and Tanika Branom will compete in the sprints. With the largest team in recent memory, Frostburg will also be able to compete in more relays on the women’s side. The potential for both teams is there for the Bobcats to continue to improve in the 2011-2012 season. Some key veterans and some promising freshman have the Frostburg track and field teams are looking better than in year’s past. “Both teams are really looking up. It is just a matter of how quickly people develop.”

Frostburg State University Track & Field From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
