Head Coach Keith Byr nes Keith Byr nes College: Plattsburgh State

Head Coach Keith Byrnes enters his 10th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2011 and has led the Bobcats to an 87-76-13 overall record. Last year marked the first for Frostburg as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference, one of the nation’s toughest league’s. The Bobcats’ finished 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the CAC. Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eight-straight AMCC Tournament semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, FSU stumbled to a 4-6-1 start, but rebounded to win the final seven games of the regular season behind an impressive 31-6 scoring advantage during the winning streak. Frostburg trounced La Roche in the opening round of the tournament, 6-1, before losing to eventual conference champion Medaille, 3-0. The Bobcats, who had three players selected to the All-AMCC first team, finished second in the AMCC in goals (2.70) and shots per game (17.60). FSU was also third in points (149), goals (54) and assists (41). In 2008, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. Byrnes, who had his Bobcats ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA/adidas Regional Rankings in early October, was named the AMCC Coach of the Year after his Bobcats finished second in the regular season (7-1-1) and second in both points scored (133) and goals (51). His squad posted nine shutouts on the year, including five against the AMCC, and outscored conference opponents 25-3. In 2007, the Bobcats endured one the best season's under Byrnes as he guided the team to a 12-9-1 overall record and runner-up finish in the ECAC South Region Championship. Frostburg State, which earned the final seed in the tournament, defeated both Carnegie Mellon (3-2) and conference opponent Penn State Altoona (2-1) in overtime, before falling to host and top seed Swarthmore (3-2) in the championship game. After struggling to a 6-7-1 overall record through the first 14 games of the season, FSU caught fire winning six of its last eight contests. During that run, the Bobcats smashed AMCC opponent's Mt. Aloysius (16-0) and Pitt-Bradford (9-0) and outscored their final eight opponents by a combined 35-10. The 16 goals scored against Mt. Aloysius, set a new school record. In his first five years at the helm, Frostburg State posted

an even 45-45-7 overall record and an 23-14-2 conference slate. In his first season, Byrnes guided the Bobcats to a seventh-place ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region according to the NCAA and an eighth-place ranking in the region by the NSCAA/Adidas. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the part-time head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of post-season appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

Ross Liberati College: Bucknell

Assistant Coach Ross Liberati enters his first year as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State men’s soccer team. Liberati attended Bucknell University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and was a member of the Dean’s List. As an athlete, Liberati was a four-year participant on the men’s soccer squad at Bucknell. Liberati led the Bison to back-to-back Patriot League championships in 2009 and 2010 and earned First Team All-Patriot League honors as a junior and senior. He was named team captain for his senior season and won the Patriot League tournament MVP in 2010. Liberati was also a three-time Delaware First Team All-State selection at Tower Hill High School.

Liberati also brings a wealth of coaching experience after working summer soccer camps for Bucknell University for three years. At the camp, he assisted top level coaches in player training preparation and match management. At FSU, Liberati is pursuing his master’s in Business Administration.

Emmett Rutkowski College: Mary Washington

Assistant Coach Emmet Rutkowski enters his second year as a graduate assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2011. He will again primarily work with the goalkeepers on both squads. Last year, Rutkowski helped the Bobcat women’s team to 14 shutouts and a stingy 0.59 goals against average. FSU advanced to both the CAC and ECAC Tournament Championship games and finished 17-4-1, just one win shy of the school record. For the men’s team, Rutkowski helped the goalkeepers to a 1.18 goals against average and two shutouts. Rutkowski joins the Bobcat staffs after a highly successful playing career at the University of Mary Washington. He was team captain, team MVP and a First Team All-CAC performer as a senior in 2009. During his career with the Eagles, he helped

2

the team to 45 wins and a No. 23 national ranking in 2008. Following UMW, Rutkowski played for the F.C. Fredericksburg Gunners of the Premier Development League (PDL) and for the Fredericksburg Generals of the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL). Rutkowski served as an assistant varsity coach for Chancellor High School from 2009-10, implanting goalkeeper drills and developing training sessions for the junior varsity team. He also served as head coach for the Fredericksburg Generals (youth indoor team) and assistant goalkeeper trainer for the Fredericksburg Hotspurs. Rutkowski, who holds both his USSF National “C” and “D” Coaching Licenses, graduated from Mary Washington this past spring with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

2011 Season Preview The 2011 Frostburg State men’s soccer team is looking to

rebound after a disappointing campaign last season. The Bobcats finished last season 4-10-3 overall and finished with a 1-4-3 record in their first season of Capital Athletic Conference play. The Bobcats will look to get back to their winning ways as they return a lot of depth and are much deeper in all positions this season. The competition between players for starting positions has never been more intense. Not only does Frostburg return 16 players from last year’s squad, but they have added eight transfers and five freshmen as well. “The competition has been much better at practice. They can all compete at the same level and we are able to go two deep at almost every position,” Coach Keith Byrnes said.” Junior captain and leading goal-scorer from last season Shawn Baker (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) returns to lead the

offensive attack. Last year’s leading point scorer Dillon Muise is out for the season with an ACL tear so Coach Byrnes will look to some new faces to help with the scoring. Ferrum college transfer Raphael Adjeoda (Gaithersburg, Md./ Ferrum Coll.) appeared in 14 games last season as a freshman and will compete for minutes. Sophomores Alex Brainard (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Michael Norman (Jefferson, Md./Middletown) played significantly as freshman last season and will provide depth to an improving front line. The goalkeeper position is wide-open up to this point. Frostburg returns junior captain Abiye Jack (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) who earned a victory in his only start in goal last season. Newcomer Brian Kukucka (Monrovia, Md./Hagerstown CC) a transfer from Hagerstown Community College was ninth in the nation in saves last season with 131 and was named Division I Region XX All-Tournament Team. He and Jack will be the top contenders for the job. Drew Hock (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) returns to add depth to the position , while freshman Ed Flynn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) has also shown potential in the net during the pre-season. Senior captain and four-year starter Jamie Flewellyn (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) returns to lead the defense that was a strong unit for the Bobcats last season. Junior Mark Eiseman (Olney, Md./Sherwood) is back after making 13 starts for Frostburg last season and senior Anthony Tossounian (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) also returns after missing most of last season due to an ACL tear. Freshman Mitchell Muise (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) looks to come in and compete for minutes right away at center defender and sophomore Jason Bennett (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) will also be in the mix in the back line. Francisco Diaz (Silver Spring, Md./Damascus) who made 12 starts last season will return to the midfield to add some punch to the Bobcat line-up. Sophomore Bryan Whitmore

(Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) and junior Chris Coello (Glen Burnie, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) also return and earned valuable

2011 Season Preview experience from last season. Coach Byrnes is looking for Whitmore to take a big step this year after appearing in 13 games and making five starts last season. Junior Ryan Russell (Waldorf, Md./Coll. Of Southern Maryland), a transfer student from the College of Southern Maryland and a 2009 Junior College All-American selection, will provide scoring and experience in the midfield. Returning defenders Michael Hurst (Church Hill, Md./Queen Annes County) and Chris Jones (California, Md./Lenoardtown) along with midfielders Brandon Rodgers (Frostburg, Md./ Mountain Ridge) and Scott Wasser (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) look to have an impact this fall after strong spring seasons. A mix of transfers and freshman make up a deep and

talented incoming coming class for Frostburg. “We have a balance with our incoming class with some freshman and some transfers who are more accustomed to playing at the college level. I think that will help our chemistry.”

The Bobcats welcome two more transfers from Hagerstown Community College Cody Butts (Clear Spring, Md./ Hagerstown CC) and Steve Kopp (Boonsboro, Md./Hagerstown CC). Both players will compete for playing time on defense. Former, Honorable Mention All-State Selection Jared Fohs (Pasadena, Md./Methodist Univ.) scored three goals as a freshman last season at Methodist University and will be a welcomed addition to the midfield. Freshman Joe Clarke (Germantown, Md./Northwest) a 2011 Montgomery County All-Star, has also impressed in the early going and looks to earn playing time at either the forward or winger positions. Yacob Kahsai (Mount Rainer, Md./Northwestern), Bryan Lentine (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North), and Matt Matousek (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) have also shown to be strong players and will be great additions to the Bobcat squad. Most of the incoming class will see the field early this season especially the transfer students. With a lot of turnover from last year’s roster it may take some time for the right line-up to develop. “We are deeper now so we have some options to play with. There are no superstars and all are good enough to challenge and compete for sports so the line-up could change from week to week. We have to find the right combination and where we click.” The Bobcats open the season hosting Averett, Mt. St. Joe’s, and John Jay at the FSU Tournament on Sept. 2 and 3. Frostburg opens the conference slate with a home match against Mary Washington on Sept. 17. The Bobcats look to finish in the top six of the conference and qualify for the CAC Conference Tournament, which begins play on October 29. “Our goal is to qualify for the conference playoffs, which we didn’t do last year. We’re pleased with what we see so far. We’re capable of being in the top six but we can’t take games off and make bad mistakes. We have to be on our game for 90 minutes.”

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
