Head Coach Re b e c c a Fl e t c h e r College: Washington & Jefferson

Head Coach Rebecca Fletcher begins her first year as the head volleyball coach at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2011. Fletcher joins the Frostburg coaching staff after a four-year stint as both the head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT). Fletcher accomplished a lot in four years with the Wildcats, turning around a struggling women’s program while starting the men’s program from scratch in 2008. On the women’s side, Fletcher led SUNYIT to three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament appearances and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. She was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and won 61 total matches in the last three years. For the men, Fletcher guided the team to five wins in its inaugural season in 2008 while in 2010, the men’s squad led the nation in team and individual digs. This spring, the Wildcats made their first postseason appearance in the program’s brief history. In 2009, Fletcher was honored by the AVCA as one of thirty up-and-coming coaches under the age of 30 years old in the sport of volleyball at all collegiate levels. “Frostburg State is a beautiful school with a great athletic tradition, and I am very excited to becoming part of the community. Not only will I have an opportunity to build upon the great foundation that exists in the volleyball program, but I look forward to taking the program to the next level.” Prior to her time at SUNYIT, she served as a graduate assistant at Utica College for one year in 2006. Fletcher graduated in 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and pre-health from Washington & Jefferson College. She was a three-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2002. In 2005, W&J won the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the ECAC Tournament.

2011 Season Preview

Expectations are running high for the Frostburg State volleyball program in 2011 as the squad returns both talent and momentum from a record-setting season a year ago. Three returning starters highlight a talented roster that’s fresh off its fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the regional championship in 2010. With its recent success, FSU has established itself as one of the top teams in the region and this season should not be any different. However, the Bobcats will have to replace three seniors from last year’s roster, including an All-American. “We are a young team this season but we are knowledgeable,” stated first year head coach Becky Fletcher. “The younger girls bring a good court knowledge to the team and that should only increase as they learn more about the college game from the veterans.” Senior All-American setter Kylie Carrington will lead the Bobcats this fall in more ways than one. She will provide veteran leadership both on and off the court and has the tenacity and drive to carry the Bobcats back to the NCAA Tournament. Carrington, one of just three All-Americans in the program’s history, is currently second all-time in career assists with 3,677. She has averaged 1,225 assists per season during her three years as a starter (2008-10) and if she continues that pace, she will shatter the school’s all-

time record (4,105). In 2010, Carrington finished with a career-best 1,320 assists, good for fourth on FSU’s single-season record list. She handed out 40 or more assists in 10 matches and finished 20th in the nation at 10.56 assists per set. Carrington capped her junior year in fine fashion with 98 assists in three matches during the NCAA Tournament, including 40 in a 3-2 win over SUNY Cortland in the

2011 Season Preview second round. The versatile and tough twins, Amber and Sabrina Winterling, will join Carrington to form this year’s senior class. Amber has the talent to play anywhere on the court while Sabrina had a breakout season in 2010 at middle hitter. Arguably the Bobcats’ most versatile athlete, Amber finished the 2010 season third on the team in kills (318) and service aces (46) and was fourth in digs (342). As a sophomore, she played primarily in the back row and registered 233 digs. Sabrina was a vital of part of the team’s attack last season. She was second on the roster with 327 kills after having just 132 in 2009. She finished fifth in the CAC in hitting percentage at .304 a year ago. With a small senior class this fall, two juniors are in a perfect position to make an impact on the starting lineup. Celina Szymanski returns to the roster from a year ago while Chelsea McCloskey is a newcomer to the roster after transferring from the College of Southern Maryland. Szymanski appeared in three games and recorded one kill and one dig while McCloskey is a new addition to the roster and should compete for playing time. Sophomores Victoria Veirs and Jessica Hair return to the roster after helping the Bobcats to a record-setting season in 2010. Veirs, the tallest member of the volleyball team, appeared in 43 games last fall and recorded 18 kills and 13 total blocks. Meanwhile, Hair saw action in eight games and had 10 kills and one block. Both players should compete for more time this season. Sophomore transfer Kass Greis earned Second Team All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Rookie Team accolades after spending the 2010 season at NCAA Division II Bowie State. If the Bobcats want to return to the NCAA Tournament for a fifth-consecutive season, this year’s class of freshmen will have to play a significant role. The group lacks game experience, but doesn’t lack drive and intensity which have proven to be the cornerstones of the FSU volleyball program over the last several years. Nicole Absher, Andrea Armstrong, Morgan Hoover and Maddie White standout from a group of five freshmen as the team heads into the season in early September. Absher was voted Player of the Year in 2010 as a senior and named Outstanding Senior Female Athlete at Fort Hill High School, while Armstrong was the Player of the Year

4

in 2009 for Fort Hill. Hoover grabbed St. Mary’s Ryken MVP honors and was an All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference selection as a senior in 2010 and White was a four-year letterwiner at Gettysburg High School. Freshman Andrea Folker rounds out the class of newcomers for the Bobcats this fall. She was an All-Star Team selection and team captain as senior at Queen Anne’s County High School. The Bobcats traditionally face one of the region’s toughest schedules and 2011 won’t be any different. At first glance, FSU faces four teams that earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament last fall including Ithaca (22-15), Cal Lutheran (29-4), Lebanon Valley (24-10) and Stevens Tech (34-6). Like Frostburg, both Cal Lutheran and Stevens Tech advanced to their regional championship contest before being eliminated from postseason play. After a closer look, the schedule is tough from top to bottom. Bluffton (23-7), Bethany (24-13), Catholic (20-14) and Franklin & Marshall (22-7) won at least 20 matches last season and were on the verge of qualifying for postseason play. FSU will also face a tough CAC schedule after winning the league’s regular season and tournament titles in its first year as a member of the league last year. The Bobcats will be on the lookout for a handful of teams that will be trying to challenge them for the top spot; Mary Washington (199), Salisbury (23-12), York (27-6), St. Mary’s (22-10) and Stevenson (25-9). Frostburg opens its regular season on Friday, September 3, when it players both Stevens Tech and Cal Lutheran at the Haverford Tournament. The Bobcats open CAC action on September 20 when they host Hood at 7:00 pm.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
