Coaching Staff Dale Luy College: Gettysburg

Head Coach Dale Luy begins his second year as the head coach of the Frostburg State University men’s and women’s cross country teams in 2011. Luy guided the Bobcats to a successful first year in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2010. The Bobcat women's team captured fourth at the league championships while Anne Patron and Jessica O'Neil went on to earn All-CAC honors and represent FSU at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet. On the men's side, the Bobcats grabbed a pair of top10 finishes during the season before finishing sixth at the CAC Championships. Frostburg capped the season with a 36th-place showing at the NCAA Regional meet. Luy brought a combined 19 years of experience coaching cross country to FSU. He served as the head coach at both Elizabethtown College for 12 years and Lower Dauphin High School for seven. His Elizabethtown teams set school records for wins in a season while his women's team twice earned Middle Atlantic Conference runner-up honors. Individually, Luy's runners have earned Division III Mideast All-Region honors as well as a prestigious Rhodes Scholar recipient. At Lower Dauphin, his teams won two MidPenn Divisional Championships and the MidPenn class-AAA Championship Luy is no stranger to FSU athletics as he has served as the school’s head track & field coach for the last four years. Coach Luy has accomplished a great deal in just four short years. He has guided three of his student-athletes to All-American status, led the women’s team to a ninth place finish at the 2009 NCAA

Outdoor Championships and a second place showing at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships that same year. Luy, who brought over 30 years of coaching experience to FSU spanning both the high school and collegiate levels, came to Frostburg having spent three years as an assistant coach at Gettysburg College. While with the Bullets, he worked with the throwing events and pole vault. He had one NCAA Div. III provisional qualifier (men’s discus), two Centennial Conference women’s discus champions, one conference women’s pole vault champion and one conference men’s javelin champion. His athletes also set six school records and 16 all-time top ten performances. Before Gettysburg, Luy served as the head track & field coach for six years at Elizabethtown Area High School. He had 14 PIAA District III qualifiers, two state qualifiers and set two school records. He directed the renovation and new placement of the track and field facilities working with engineers, architects and district officials. Luy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Gettysburg in 1978, Masters of Education in Teaching and Curriculum from Penn State - Harrisburg in 1991 and his Doctor in Sports Management from the United State Sports Academy in 2007. While at Gettysburg, Luy was a four-year letterwinner for the track and field teams taking home NCAA All-American honors in 1976 as a member of the 440-yard relay team and 1977 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Season Preview The Frostburg State University men’s and women’s cross country teams look to improve on their conference finish as they enter their second campaign in the Capital Athletic Conference. Last season, the men finished sixth while the women took home fourth place. On the men’s side, the Bobcats return their top-two runners from last season, sophomore Pat Meade (Woodbine, Md./Century) and senior Jesse Henderson (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key). Henderson led the Bobcats at the NCAA Mideast Regional last season after running a 28:17. He also led the Bobcats at the Carnegie Mellon Mideast Regional Preview (27:47), and the Gettysburg College Invitational (28:04.92).

MEAD

Meade steadily improved throughout the season and capped an

impressive freshman season after finishing 21st (26:59) at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships. Meade ran strong races at the Don Cathcart Invite, (61st, 27:28) and the Elizabethtown College 6k (22nd, 20:19). “Pat Mead ran a pretty good race there (CAC Championships). We were without two of our top three runners at conference last year,” said head coach Dale Luy. Coach Luy also pointed out that getting healthy and remaining healthy will be a key to this season, as the men’s roster is thin coming into the season. The team welcomes back junior Gavin Caupp (Frostburg, Md./Mountain Ridge) who after two races last season suffered a season-ending injury and received a medical redshirt. Caupp earned all-conference honors in his first two seasons on the squad and was the team’s best finisher at both the Shippensburg Invitational and the Dickinson Invite. “He was running very well at the beginning of last year, but then he was injured. Gavin has already demonstrated that he is one of the better runners in the conference and Pat is capable of being right there with him,” Luy added. Also returning to the team after missing much of the cross country season is senior Wes Jacobs (Baltimore, Md./Aberdeen). Jacobs competed in only three races in the fall, but had a very successful track season. At the ECAC Championships, Jacobs finished seventh and missed provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships by .06 seconds. Luy has high expectations for these runners coming into the season and expects big things from his top returners. “Our top four could do very well in conference if they run to their potential.” Trying to crack the rotation for the Bobcats top five will be senior Sean Wright (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), junior Miguel Montano (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), and sophomores Anthony Schilling (Denton, Md./North Caroline) and Eric Williams (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen). Wright was a steady competitor last season and ran his best race at Elizabethtown. He finished with a season-best time of 23:21. Montano progressed as the season went along in 2010 finished the season strong at the CAC Championships. Schilling and Williams had strong track seasons that they look to carry over to cross country this fall. Williams had a fifth place finish at the CAC Championships in the 800-meter run and qualified for the ECAC Championship as a member of the 4x400-meter

Season Preview relay. Schilling meanwhile, had two top-ten finishes in the 800-meters during the indoor season. The women’s roster includes three returners and they are led by senior Anne Patron (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney). Patron had four top-ten finishes last season, highlighted by a third-place finish (22:50) at the CAC Championships. Patron is a three-time allconference performer and one of the top runners in the Mid-east region. The two other returners are senior Kimmie Adams (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown/HCC) and sophomore Jen Bower (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) who have been vital to the team success. “Kimmie Adams and Jen Bower are both very dedicated runners and have contributed a lot to building the team concept, which we really needed,” said Luy. Adams ran her best time of the season at the CAC Championships (25:49) and made great strides throughout the year, while Bower steadily improved throughout her freshman season and finished 48th at the CAC Championships. Two freshman have been added to the women’s roster this season, Bryn Allston (Waldorf, Md./North Point) and Gabby Maher (Frederick, Md./Frederick). Coach Luy likes what he sees from the freshmen in the pre-season. “It’s going take them a little while to adjust to collegiate cross country, but they’re definitely going to be good runners and make us a stronger team.” The Bobcats open their schedule September 3 at Shippensburg followed by trips to York College of Pennsylvania and the Dickinson Invitational. October brings the heart of the team’s schedule with dates at DeSales University and Gettysburg. At the end of the month the team has their eyes focused on the CAC Championships. “Right now, our goal at this stage is to get better every week. Normally, we focus on the end of the year meets, the championship meets, and that may be true this year more than ever.”

2011 Cross Country Media Guide

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.

Director of Athletics

Dr. Jonathan C. Gibralter was named the 14th president of Frostburg State University in March of 2006. Prior to joining FSU, Dr. Gibralter served as president of Farmingdale State University of New York on Long Island from 2001 to 2006. Under his leadership, Farmingdale State experienced a significant transformation, including a 25 percent increase in enrollment and the launching of a number of new bachelor degree programs. Dr. Gibralter also is credited with building strong campus ties with business leaders, and he began Farmingdale State’s first-ever major gifts campaign in 2003, with the goal of raising $10 million in five years. Before his tenure at Farmingdale State, Dr. Gibralter held other positions at higher education institutions in the state of New York. He was interim president of Corning Community College in 2000-2001. Also at Corning, he served as dean of academic affairs from 1998 to 2000. From 1993 to 1998, he was dean of the Rome Campus of Mohawk Valley Community College. And from 1990 to 1993, he was associate dean of the School of Liberal Arts at the State University of New York at Morrisville. Also active within his profession, Dr. Gibralter serves on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and on the Facilities Strategies Committee of SUNY’s University-wide Strategic Planning Committee. Dr. Gibralter holds a Ph.D. in human development from Syracuse University (1996), an M.A. in counseling psychology from New York University (1982), and a B.A. in psychology from the State University of New York at Binghamton (1978). He and his wife Laurie have two sons.

Troy Dell is in his fifth year as the Director of Athletics at Frostburg State after taking over the department on June 18, 2007. As the director, Dell oversees an athletic department that sponsors 21 varsity sports and a handful of club and junior varsity sports. During his tenure with Frostburg State, Dell has played an important role within the university. He was the driving force behind FSU’s move to the Capital Athletic Conference and was instrumental in bringing the men’s lacrosse program back to varsity status. He has improved facilities such as the weight room/fitness center and Bobcat Natatorium. In addition to overseeing a staff of nearly 55, he also completed the hiring of four new athletic administrators including an Associate Athletic Director for facilities and game operations and the school’s first Senior Woman Administrator. He came to Frostburg State from Gettysburg College where he worked for over a decade, including the final five years as the Assistant Director of Athletics. He had significant responsibilities on a number of facilities improvements there, as well as in the hiring of several coaches. He was also the head wrestling coach. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Gettysburg College and a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science and Physical Education, with an emphasis in administration.
