HEAD COACH Jody Pepple Head Coach 11th Season Jody Pepple begins her 11th season as head coach of the Frostburg State University women’s basketball program after serving as the team’s top assistant from 1995-2001. Pepple has guided the Bobcats to a 146-121 overall record in her previous 10 years and she is the second winningest coach in the program’s 47-year history. She led Frostburg State to the NCAA Tournament and AMCC Tournament Championship in 2005, along with ECAC Tournament berths in 2004 and 2006. Twenty-one players have earned all-conference honors under her guidance including the AMCC’s Player of the Year in both 2002-03 and 2004-05. Last season, Pepple successfully led the Bobcats through their first year in the Capital Athletic Conference, annually one of the toughest leagues in NCAA Division III. Frostburg finished 10-16 overall and 9-7 in the conference. The Bobcats shook off a slow start to earn the fifth seed in the CAC Tournament behind nine wins in the final 12 games of the regular season. FSU finished the year second in the league in points per game (60.3), three-pointers (124) and assists per game (13.2). Pepple led the women’s team to their second best finish during her time at the helm of the program in 2009-10. The Bobcats finished 19-8 overall and 15-5 in AMCC, just behind her 2004-05 squad that finished 21-7 overall and 16-2 in the conference. FSU advanced to the AMCC Tournament semifinals, led the league in rebounding margin (+6.9) and finished fourth in the league in both scoring offense (67.7) and scoring defense (60.1). Seniors Brittany James and Caryn Wright both surpassed the 1,000-point barrier Coach Pepple’s time as a coach at FSU. In 2008-09, FSU finished 16-10 overall and third place in the AMCC (13-5). The Bobcats led the league in rebounding margin (+5.7) and finished second in offensive rebounds (16.65), defensive rebounds (26.54) rebounding offense (43.2) and rebounding defense (37.5). In 2007-08, Pepple reached a milestone in her career as she eclipsed the 100win plateau and became the second winngest coach in school history. Despite the team posting just a 9-16 overall record and a 6-12 AMCC mark, Pepple’s career mark stands at 101-87. After a slow start, the Bobcats turned it on late in the season and finished the year with four wins in their final five games. FSU advanced to the AMCC Tournament for the seventh-straight season and Elizabeth Carrington became the 16th player to be named to an All-AMCC team during Pepple’s tenure. In 2006-07, the Bobcats posted their fourth-straight winning season under sixthyear Head Coach Jody Pepple. Her squad was 17-9 overall and 12-6 in the AMCC and just missed a spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. FSU kicked off the season by starting 4-0 and winning both the Fifth Annual FSU/Jim

Crawley Tournament and the Gallaudet Tournament. FSU finished the season strong with seven-straight wins to clinch an AMCC Tournament opening round game at Bobcat Arena. In that contest, the fourth-seeded Bobcats fell to fifth-seeded Lake Erie on a game-winning basket with four seconds left on the clock. In 2005-06, the Bobcats finished 18-10 overall and 13-6 in the AMCC. Frostburg State earned a No. 3 seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament and advanced to the semifinals, losing to eventual runner-up PittGreensburg 66-62. For the second time in three years, FSU earned a berth into the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament, where they lost to Johns Hopkins in the opening round, 56-38. Frostburg State ranked second in the AMCC in steals per game (13.29) and turnover margin (3.25) and third in scoring offense (68.0 ppg), field goal percentages (41.8), blocked shots per game (3.11) and assists (14.89). In 2004-05, Pepple guided the Bobcats to a 21-7 overall finish, a 16-2 mark in the AMCC, both the AMCC regular-season and tournament titles and FSU’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 1996-97 campaign. The Bobcats defeated rivals Penn State Behrend (63-53) and Pitt-Greensburg (81-62) in the AMCC Tournament to

HUMMEL 2011-12 FROSTBURG STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

STRAKA

SEASON PREVIEW Front Row: Elaina Hummel, Kyler Redmond, Stephanie Straka, RJ James, Tamara Maxwell, Simone Wise, Simone Brewer

For the Frostburg State women’s basketball team, the recipe to success has changed significantly from last season. With only three players remaining from the 2010-11 roster, Bobcats 11th-year head coach Jody Pepple has added several new ingredients to what she has termed “a nice little melting pot.” Starting Tuesday night against PittGreensburg, the task for Frostburg State will be to have all of these new parts tasting success in the Capital Athletic Conference. Despite the low roster turnover, Pepple doesn’t prefer to use the term “rebuilding.” Frostburg returns its second and third leading scorers in sophomore shooting guard Elaina Hummel and junior point guard Stephanie Straka. The Bobcats also welcome a pair of transfers in junior guard Tamara Maxwell and senior forward India Hall while sophomore forward Elizabeth Erickson returns after a one-year hiatus. Hummel emerged as a true scoring threat in her rookie season, averaging 10.2 points per game while shooting 40.7 percent from three-point range. “I’d say she’s our only true three-point shooter,” Pepple said. “When teams look at us, she is going to be a target. She’s now going to have to be able to shoot off the dribble or off of a screen and create shots of her own.” Straka will man the point. It’s a role her coach said she’s grown into and has embraced as she enters her junior year. “Steph has really matured,” Pepple said. “She’s really put some of the freshmen under her wing and has guided them.” At 5-foot-3 with excellent ball handling skills, Straka has the ability to create plays. She’ll look to improve upon an even 1.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. “She’s sneaky. She can find those little tiny gaps that you and I can’t squeeze in to find the open player or to take the ball to the rim herself.” Erickson joins the starting lineup after sitting out the ’10-’11 season. She averaged 4.2 points in 25 games in 2009-10. And despite just making two starts that season, she averaged nearly a block per game. A true center, Erickson plays very well with her back to the basket on the offensive end while possessing the ability to step out and hit the three. Senior forward Meische Cox is projected to begin the year as a starter and could be dominant on the glass. She came to Frostburg as a soccer player and had endured nagging injuries in the past few years. Pepple originally recruited her to play basketball, and she’s happy to finally have Cox on the roster. “She’s met all expectations and surpassed them,” the coach said. “She’s a silent leader. She has the ability to pick up things really quickly and directs her teammates without us really even knowing.” Freshman forward Kyler Redmond rounds out the Bobcats’ starting five. One of Frostburg’s top recruits in this class, she’s shown the versatility to transition from being a low-post presence in high school into a swing forward in college. Her ability to hit the 12-footer certainly helps in that conversion as well as her ability to run the floor. Pepple also expects Redmond to shoot 80-plus percent from the free throw line. That said, her experience in the post still shines through. “She’s very strong, in shape, and of course, she rebounds.” Maxwell and India Hall are in their first year with the program, but come in as transfers with prior collegiate experience. “Expectations are a little higher for them,” Pepple said.

Maxwell transferred to Frostburg State from Howard Community College. A lefty defensive specialist, Pepple describes her as mentally tough and willing to take on whatever role she is given. India Hall played at St. Augustine’s and gives the Bobcats another strong low-post option with outstanding rebounding skill. She joins Cox as the only seniors on the roster. “This is it for her. We call her the ‘Old Lady,’” the coach said with a laugh. “There’s a leadership quality that comes automatically when you’re a senior.” Junior forward Brynn Arnone is the third player to carry over from last season’s roster. She averaged 4.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in 26 appearances while shooting 46.1 percent, good for second on the team. Pepple is excited with freshman guards RJ James and Simone Wise. “We call the two of them ‘Batman and Robin’ because they complement each other so well,” she said. But while the Caped Crusader didn’t have any special powers, James and Wise have been blessed with plenty of speed, good court vision and the ability to handle the ball under pressure. Mix in solid medium range jumpers and capable strokes from the line and Frostburg boasts five very competent guards. “They’re all very quick and that can create a lot of havoc,” Pepple said of her backcourt. “We can keep pressing and mixing up our presses. That’s Frostburg basketball.” Sophomore Lindsey Perkins comes from a nationally-ranked high school program at Riverdale Baptist. On this year’s squad, all seven seniors are headed to Div. I programs. Perkins, a 6-foot forward, was planning to play last season but was also a member of the Frostburg State volleyball team that made a run to the NCAA Regional Final. “She’s a great kid to coach and is excited to learn,” Pepple said. Freshman forward Shaniqua Hall comes off the bench as another presence on the blocks that can make the mid-range jumper from the short corner to the elbow. Freshman Bobbi McDonald has the potential to be a top-notch rebounder and will see time at both forward positions. She is another player making the transition from being strictly a post player in high school. She’s improving her ball handling to become more of a force facing the basket. Sophomore guard Simone Brewer is two years removed from playing and continues to work hard in practice. Pepple and her coaching staff have embraced the challenge of trying to meld this team together with players from varying basketball backgrounds. “Practices have been long because there’s a lot of teaching going on as to what we’re trying to do,” she said. “We have kids from the city, from the country, junior college transfers, transfers from four-years, and of course our Frostburg returners.” That fact has the coaching staff excited about the depth, although the experience level may not be as high in some areas. “Write a scouting report on us now. Teams really only know about Straka and Hummel, but we’re deeper than that. And the more they play together, the better we’ll be as a team.” With Mary Washington, Marymount and York (Pa.) looming in CAC play, those two two starting guards are hungry to improve upon last season’s 9-7 league record. “They know what it takes to get there after that first year in the CAC,” Pepple said. “Now they have to get the rest of the team to believe in it.”

ABOUT FROSTBURG From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which

housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University

owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.

Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed

the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science,

Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
