Head Coach Brian Parker Brian Parker College: Frostburg State
Head Coach Brian Parker begins his 10th season as head coach of the Frostburg State University women's soccer program in 2011. The 1992 FSU graduate, is the winningest Bobcat women's soccer coach with a 130-44-16 record in his nine seasons. Last fall marked the first season for Frostburg as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference and the Bobcats showed their dominance from the very start. During the regular season, FSU posted a 6-2 league record, outscored CAC opponents 29-6 and earned the second seed in the conference tournament before eventually losing in the championship in double overtime. Frostburg finished 2010 with a 17-4-1 overall mark, one win away from the school record, and hosted the ECAC Tournament Championship. FSU posted 14 shutouts, including 10 at home and placed four players on the All-CAC team. Prior to 2010, FSU won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times under Parker's guidance (2002-05 and 2009). He also powered the Bobcats to the ECAC Tournament in three-consecutive seasons from 2006-2008. In 2009, Parker capped FSU's tenure in the AMCC in stellar fashion. Frostburg finished with a school record 18 wins (18-4 overall), scored a program record 90 goals, won 14 of 15 games during the middle part of the season, posted a 9-1 conference mark and advanced ot the AMCC Championshiop game for the 11th-straight year. FSU breezed through the first two games of the AMCC Tournament with 4-0 and 11-2 wins over Hilbert and PittBradford, respectively. In the championship, FSU needed an overtime period to down Penn State Altoona as Lauren Russell drilled home a shot four minutes into the extra frame to send FSU to a 1-0 victory. In the NCAA Tournament, FSU lost to No. 9 ranked Otterbein 1-0 in the first round. In 2008, Frostburg State posted 16 wins for the secondstraight season (16-2-4) and set school records in shutouts (15), save percentage (0.873), goals against average (0.35) and fewest goals allowed in a season (8). The Bobcats hosted the ECAC South Region Championship Tournament and finished runner-up after losing to Swarthmore in penalty kicks (5-4). The Bobcats earned NSCAA Ethics/Sportsmanship and NSCAA Academic awards and placed seven players on the AllAMCC teams. The Bobcats had numerous highlights during the 2007 season including an ECAC Tournament semifinal appearance, a 4-1 upset of No. 18 ranked Johns Hopkins, nine shutout victories and a run of 11 wins in 12 games during the middle of the season. FSU advanced to the AMCC Tournament finals after downing Penn State Altoona in the semi's 4-1. Frostburg State was later eliminated by rival Penn State Behrend, 2-1, in the championship. Over his first five years at the helm (2002-06), Parker built one of the most successful programs on the east coast. He led the Bobcats to four-consecutive AMCC Tournament Championships and four NCAA Tournaments. In 2003, the
Bobcats were chosen to host an NCAA match for the first time in school history and made the most of the opportunity, defeating Westminster 3-2 for their first NCAA Tournament victory in three tries. Parker, a two-time AMCC Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004, led the Bobcats to 63 wins during that stretch, 35 wins in the AMCC and a school record 12-straight wins in the 2003 season. Parker coached 36 All-AMCC selections and six league Players of the Year, including three-time Great Lakes AllRegion honoree Karen Kotofski. Parker has coached several individual school record holders, including Kotofski, the school's all-time leader in goals (83) and Lauren Russell, FSU's all-time leader in assists (39). Russell is also second in program history with 64 career goals. Former goalkeeper Stephanie Zych (2000-03) holds four major career goalkeeping records; wins (48), saves (443), goals against average (.154) and shutouts (19). Prior to returning to western Maryland, Parker served as head girls soccer coach at Urbana High School in Frederick County, Md., since the school's opening in 1995. He guided the Hawks to an impressive 62-36-6 record and a pair of regional championships during his tenure. In just his second season at Urbana, Parker was named the Frederick County Coach of the Year after leading a team of freshmen and sophomores to the school's first-ever regional championship crown. The Hawks, who posted winning records in six of Parker's seven years, earned their second regional title in 2001. Parker is no stranger to FSU, as he was a goalkeeper for the Bobcats from 1987-89. He was a member of two Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament qualifiers, including the 1989 squad that won the ECAC South Region Championship. Parker then coached the FSU women's soccer team as a club sport from 1990-1992 and received his degree in social sciences with a teaching certification from FSU in 1992. He moved on to West Virginia University where he serve as a graduate assistant for the Mountaineer men's team for two years while earning a master's in political science. Parker, who has a USSF "B" coaching license and a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA, is on the coaching education staff of both the Maryland State Youth Soccer Assoc. (MSYSA) and the NSCAA and teaches in the FSU Minor in Coaching program. Parker is also frequently on the Maryland Olympic Development Program Staff and led the Maryland 1990 Girls team to the Region I Tournament championship in 2005 and coached the 1994 girls in 2009/10 and the 1996 girls in 2011 to appearances in the Region I Tournament Championship game. Parker was a founder and staff coach with the Frederick United Soccer Club (now FC Frederick) until his return to FSU. He and his wife, Karen, a 1993 FSU graduate and native of Frostburg, have two children — Elise (10) and Matt (8).

Assistant Coaches
Chrissy Conrad College: Frostburg State
Assistant Coach Chrissy Conrad is entering her first season as a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State University women’s soccer program in 2011-12. Conrad has been involved with the women’s soccer team at Frostburg for the past four seasons. During her first two years as a player, she appeared in 20 games and made one start before suffering a career-ending injury. Conrad continued to serve the team doing video recording and editing for the past two years. Before enrolling at Frostburg, Conrad played as a forward at Tuscarora High School for coach Mark Wolcott and won
two Maryland State High School Championships. She was a First-Team All-Area player as a junior and was an All-Monocacy Valley Athletic League and an All-Area selection as a senior. Conrad played club soccer for the Hagerstown Soccer Club under coach Steve Darr. She has also recently earned the NSCAA National Diploma. Conrad graduated from Frostburg State University with a bachelor’s of science in psychology and is now pursuing a master’s degree in education.
Emmett Rutkowski College: Mary Washington
Assistant Coach Emmet Rutkowski enters his second year as a graduate assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2011. He will again primarily work with the goalkeepers on both squads. Last year, Rutkowski helped the Bobcat women's team to 14 shutouts and a stingy 0.59 goals against average. FSU advanced to both the CAC and ECAC Tournament Championship games and finished 17-4-1, just one win shy of the school record. For the men's team, Rutkowski helped the goalkeepers to a 1.18 goals against average and two shutouts. Rutkowski joined the Bobcat staffs after a highly successful playing career at the University of Mary Washington. He was team captain, team MVP and a First Team All-CAC performer as a senior in 2009. During his career with the Eagles, he helped
2
the team to 45 wins and a No. 23 national ranking in 2008. Following UMW, Rutkowski played for the F.C. Fredericksburg Gunners of the Premier Development League (PDL) and for the Fredericksburg Generals of the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL). Rutkowski served as an assistant varsity coach for Chancellor High School from 2009-10, implanting goalkeeper drills and developing training sessions for the junior varsity team. He also served as head coach for the Fredericksburg Generals (youth indoor team) and assistant goalkeeper trainer for the Fredericksburg Hotspurs. Rutkowski, who holds both his USSF National “C” and “D” Coaching Licenses, graduated from Mary Washington this past spring with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

2011 Season Preview Losing five very productive senior starters doesn’t usually equate to a head coach banking on veteran leadership, but that appears to be a real strength for Brian Parker and his 2011 Frostburg State women’s soccer team. That doesn’t mean the Bobcats won’t miss a beat, but the Capital Athletic Conference runners-up should certainly stay in rhythm in their second year as a member of the conference. Eight seniors on the roster, including many probable starters, are charged with the task of keeping the team on point. “We’re going to definitely be different this year, and I think our seniors allow us to have that kind of flexibility that maybe other teams might not have,” Parker said. “The learning curve won’t be as steep here in the preseason. We know what we can do from last year in terms of our system of play.” That system allowed the 2010 Bobcats to outscore opponents, 77-13, while outshooting them, 456-188. “There’s no question that our MO is not going to be quite the same where we can just run-and-gun and compete with anybody,” the coach said. “We’re going to have to be much better organized and a lot smarter and nip some good teams in one-goal games.” Imperative in winning those one-goal games is a solid goalkeeper, and the Bobcats are anchored by senior Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert). Sporting a schoolrecord 0.44 career goals against average, Buckmaster has provided a certain sense of security in goal. With scoring perhaps at more of a premium for the Bobcats in 2011 than in recent years, her superb play should stand out in her final year with the club. As will her leadership skills. “She’s a real verbal, extroverted sort of person. She’s a natural leader that players respect. She’s a voice.” Fellow senior Kristin Prochniak (Westminster, Md./ Winters Mill) provides a veteran back-up for Buckmaster, and should see some action this fall. With her own career goals against average sitting at 0.67, Prochniak certainly has proven the ability to play excellent goal when called upon. Freshman Katie Smith (Reisterstown, Md./Maryvale Prep) will have to bide her time but has impressed in her first collegiate preseason. A super athlete, she joins Buckmaster as being among the fastest players on the club. “She’ll have to pay her dues a bit and wait for her opportunity, but she has a great future in the program,” Parker said. “Her day will come.” There are still plenty of scoring options at the Bobcats’ disposal despite losing nearly 70 percent of their scoring output from last season. Senior Cassie Donahue (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) will be one of the team’s starting forwards, and Parker is very impressed by how far she’s come since her freshman year. “Cassie’s the best example of a player in my 10 years here who has been noticeably better year after year after year. She’s
SELIGMAN a really skillful, exciting, speedy player that can change the game at any moment. There’s nothing she can’t do.” She made 21 starts for the club last season, netting four goals and adding an assist. “She’s probably our best overall soccer player,” he said. “She’s going to have to show it, but I think she’s ready for that challenge to be regarded as a number one.” Following closely behind that number one tag is sophomore Adria Graham (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett). Graham was third on the team in her freshman campaign with 10 goals. With the loss of the two scorers ahead of her, including 27-goal scorer Amanda Wharton, Graham should see even more opportunities in her second season. Wharton became ill in the spring and had to leave campus to get treatments and was not able to return to school. While she may return to the program sometime in the future, “at this point we can’t expect that,” Parker said. The opening created for Graham should allow her to expand on her fantastic athletic abilities and mature demeanor. Even with the abundance of scoring on the team last fall, she forced her way into the lineup and earned plenty of starts. “There’s nothing else you could ask from her in terms of her intangibles,” Parker said. “For her to be plugged right in and be a go-to player, she’s prepared for that and very willing to accept that responsibility.” Freshman Stephanie Fazenbaker (Frostburg, Md./ Mountain Ridge) arrived late to the preseason after a stellar prep career at Frostburg's own Mountain Ridge High School where she scored 104 career goals, but she has already had a positive impact. "She’s a terrific athlete and has a range of talents. I have a

PROCTOR feeling she'll become an important player here this year and find a role in our lineup soon." Freshman Sarah Allsop (Beltsville, Md./Laurel) brings athletic tools to the forward position and will undoubtedly be helped by her more experienced forward mates. “We see a lot of potential in her,” Parker said. The midfield positions have been hit hardest by graduation, but the Bobcats boast plenty of current seniors to fill those roles. Senior Erin Ford (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) is experienced and is expected to play significant minutes at the center midfield position. At the wide midfield or forward spots, senior Dorie Gedridge (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) returns after starting eight games in the second half of last season. In 18 total appearances, Gedridge tied for fifth on the team with four goals. Fellow seniors Jessica Kraemer (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) and Olivia Winant (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) will also rotate through those positions and have looked great in the preseason. Sophomore Chelsea Paskowski (Leesburg, Va./Heritage), who scored the game-winning goal in the Bobcats’ ECAC semifinal victory over Alvernia last November, will also play a big role as a central midfield player. Freshmen Shannah Knight (Oldtown, Md./Fort Hill) and Kaitlin Evans (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) will both compete for minutes in the midfield as they adjust to the college game. A pair of experienced juniors will lead the defensive line for the Bobcats this season. Erin Proctor (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) and Liz Seligman (Rockville, Md./St. John's College) each started all 22 games in 2010 and were key reasons why the Bobcats allowed just a total of 13 goals in those matches. “Their commitment to the game is unbelievable,” Parker said. “They’re always playing. They’re just great soccer players,
4
and that passion and commitment is contagious.” Seligman did lead the team with 13 assists last season, primarily as the team’s corner kick specialist. But their value comes in preventing chances for the opposition. The Bobcats’ defense allowed just 90 shots on goal all season, in contrast to the team generating 250 of its own. Having that skill and experience on defense can be underrated, but it’s not unappreciated. “They’re juniors with a big senior class, so obviously they’ll be big time leaders in our program when their time comes,” Parker said. “But they’re already very important to us in a lot of ways.” Proctor was elected as a tri-captain along with seniors Buckmaster and Donahue. Another senior, Nikki Rieland (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), will join the backline. She made seven starts in 16 appearances last year. The fourth spot in the back is up for grabs, with freshman Quincy Hegeman (Frostburg, Md./Mountain Ridge) vying for a starting role as a center back. Sophomore Kyrsten Buck (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) and freshman Abby Aposporos (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) will also be in the rotation. Aposporos has impressed in the preseason and will likely see playing time somewhere on the field, though at what position is still to be determined. “She really flies around and plays with a lot of energy,” Parker said. “She’s earned her way into the lineup.” Fellow freshmen Elise Duff (Gaithersburg, Md./Wootton) and Kelly Snyder (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) are also in the mix on defense. After a highly successful debut in the CAC, the Bobcats are finding that it will be somewhat tougher to fly under the radar. I think it’s interesting that we are the new team in the conference and had a very good start to our tenure last year, and a lot of CAC teams now consider us to be a big game,” Parker said. “And that’s great, we enjoy that kind of pressure.” And while the possibility of wins by significant margins seems slimmer in 2011, Parker feels that the leaders on his team are prepared for some tighter contests. “We’ll be exactly as good as our seniors want us to be and allow us to be,” he said. “I think they understand that responsibility, and I think they’re ready to go.”

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold
