Frostburg State University Track & Field Dale Luy Head Coach Sixth Season Dale Luy is entering his sixth year at the helm of the Frostburg State University track & field teams in 2012-13. Luy has been highly successful during his five-year tenure with the Bobcat programs. Last year, Frostburg saw marked improvements during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Luy garnered CAC Coach of the Year honors after leading the men’s team to a runner-up showing at the inaugural indoor championships. The women finished fourth during the indoor season, while both the men and women grabbed fourth place during the outdoor championships, a meet hosted by FSU. A total of 12 student-athletes were selected to the All-CAC teams, while 13 competed at the ECAC Championships. The Bobcats men’s team was ranked in the top-10 in the Mideast Region for several weeks during the outdoor season, while FSU won the Roanoke Invitational and finished second at the Goucher Invite. In 2010-11, Luy guided the Bobcats through their first year as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. The FSU men finished fourth while the women were fifth. Five men grabbed All-CAC honors, led by two first-team awards for Chauncey Manson, while Emily Furr was the lone female to earn all-conference honors. During the outdoor season, nine of Luy’s student-athletes appeared in either the NCAA or ECAC Championships. Furr represented FSU at the NCAA and ECAC Outdoor Championships in the triple jump while seven other Bobcats represented Frostburg at the ECAC’s. As a team, the Bobcats collected six All-ECAC honors with top-five finishes in the women’s triple jump, men’s 200-meter dash and the men’s 4x100-meter relay. Frostburg had just as much success at the ECAC Indoor Championships as six athletes participated. Furr qualified in the triple jump, Manson earned a spot in the 200-meter dash and freshman Morgan Carroll competed in the 500-meter dash. The Bobcat 4x200meter relay team also ran at the ECAC Championships. In 2009-10, a pair of Luy’s student-athletes qualified for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Junior Emily Furr hit provisional marks in both the triple jump and high jump and sophomore David Thomas automatically qualified for the long jump. Luy also had 10 athletes qualify for the ECAC Championships during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Bobcat women’s team captured fifth-place finishes at both the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Championships and the Mason-Dixon Invitational during the outdoor season. On the men’s side, the Bobcats captured a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Marietta College Invitational in January and the Don Frail Invitational at Marietta in April. In 2008-09, Luy guided the Bobcat women’s team to a ninth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Senior Sumer Rohrs and sophomore Emily Furr captured a combined three All-American honors during the outdoor championships while Rohrs captured national championships in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles and was named the USTFCCCA Division III National Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. On the men’s side, senior Brian Leiter earned All-American honors in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs.

Luy also led the women’s team to the 2009 Mason-Dixon Conference Championship with a slim 123-122 victory over defending champion Christopher Newport. Furr was named the Field Athlete of the Meet while Luy was named the Coach of the Meet. During the 2008-09 indoor season, Luy led the women’s team to a 21st place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Rohrs earned her third-straight national title in the 55-meter hurdles while Leiter earned All-American honors in the one mile run. Rohrs set the NCAA Division III national record in the 55-meter hurdles (7.84) was named the indoor championships Track Athlete of the Meet. During the 2007-08 indoor season, Luy helped the Bobcats to an individual national champion and All-American, an ECAC Champion and four All-ECAC selections and five individual Mason-Dixon Conference Champions. Luy had even more success during the outdoor season, as he again led Frostburg State to a individual national champion and a pair of All-American finishers. He helped the Bobcats collect two ECAC Championships, three All-ECAC awards and six individual Mason-Dixon Conference champions. Luy also serves as FSU’s head cross country coach. This past fall season, the FSU men finished fifth while the women were sixth at the league championships. Gavin Caupp and Patrick Mead captured All-CAC honors for the Bobcat men. Luy, who brought over 30 years of coaching experience to FSU spanning both the high school and collegiate levels, comes to Frostburg having spent the prior three years as an assistant coach at Gettysburg College. While with the Bullets, he worked with the throwing events and pole vault. He had one NCAA Div. III provisional qualifier (men’s discus), two Centennial Conference women’s discus champions, one conference women’s pole vault champion and one conference men’s javelin champion. His athletes also set six school records and 16 all-time top ten performances. Before Gettysburg, Luy served as the head track & field coach for six years at Elizabethtown Area High School. He had 14 PIAA District III qualifiers, two state qualifiers and set two school records. He directed the renovation and new placement of the track and field facilities working with engineers, architects and district officials. From 1996-2005, Luy was the head coach for the winter track and field program at Elizabethtown Area High School as well. He had two athletes qualify for the state indoor championships. His athletes also set 13 school records and claimed over 70 all-time top five performances.

Coaching Staff

Frostburg State University Track & Field During his time as the head of the winter program, he was an assistant during the spring season from 1995-1999. He led his runners to four school records, one PIAA silver medal and two PIAA state medals. While working with the high school, Luy was the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at nearby Elizabethtown College from 1986-1998. He had multiple Middle Atlantic States Conference Academic honorees including a Rhodes Scholar in 1994. He guided the women’s team to 10-consecutive winning seasons, school record in wins (10) twice and second place MAC finishes in 1993 and 1994. On the men’s side, he led the team to back-to-back winning seasons in 1990 and 1991 for the first time in 24 years. Luy also initiated the indoor and outdoor track and field club teams at the college from 1987 thru 1997. Despite being just a club program, the teams competed against many varsity level programs including the MAC Indoor Championships. He has also served as an interim assistant coach at Dickinson College (1988) and the head track and field coach at Lower Dauphin High School (1983-1986). He holds numerous certificates including a USATF Level II certification in sprints/hurdles and American Red Cross certification in standard first aid and infant & child CPR. Luy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Gettysburg in 1978, Masters of Education in Teaching and Curriculum from Penn State - Harrisburg in 1991 and his Doctor in Sports Management from the United State Sports Academy in 2007. While at Gettysburg, Luy was a four-year letterwinner for the track and field teams taking home NCAA AllAmerican honors in 1976 as a member of the 440-yard relay team and 1977 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Kendall Luy

Kendall Luy enters her second year as a full-time assistant track & field coach for Frostburg State University in 2012-13. Last year, Luy helped the Bobcats to successful outings during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Frostburg men finished runner-up at the inaugural CAC Indoor Championships while the women earned fourth place. During the outdoor championships, both squads captured fourth place. A total of 12 student-athletes were selected to the All-CAC teams, while 13 competed at the ECAC Championships. Luy, selected from a national search in the summer of 2011, served as a graduate assistant with the FSU track & field program for three years (2008-11) and played a vital role in the resurgence of the throwing events for both the men’s and women’s teams. Luy also served as one of the team’s primary recruiters during that time. The Bobcat throwers turned in successful results at several meets during both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2010-11. Under Luy’s guidance, the Bobcats captured 16 top-10 finishes in the throwing events, including the men’s discus title at the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. Overall, the Bobcat men finished fourth while the women were fifth in Frostburg’s first year as a member of the CAC. At the Ohio Open in early May, a meet consisting primarily of NCAA Division I and II schools, the FSU throwers set 18 personal records and recorded 20 top-10 finishes. In the two previous years, Luy helped the Bobcat teams to numerous top-10 finishes, including the 2008-09 Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championship title and a ninth-place overall finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor National Championships. Luy arrived at FSU after a four-year athletic career with the Susquehanna track & field program. While there, she participated in the javelin, shot put, sprints and relays. She was an NCAA Division III National provisional qualifier in the javelin in 2008 and was a Landmark Conference All-Academic Team selection during the 2007-08 year. She was also a three-time All-Middle Athletic All-Conference selection. In 2003, she participated in the USATF Junior Olympics at the regional championships. The four-year Dean’s List Scholarship student and Presidential Fellow, graduated in May 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in psychology. Until being hired at Frostburg State, Luy had worked at Bret’s Adventure, helping to facilitate activities which require social interaction skills, assist with home school lessons and provide support for autistic children. Luy was also the manager for the Office of Multicultural Affairs while at Susquehanna. Luy graduated in May 2011 with her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Frostburg State University.

Nicole Farr

Nicole Farr enters her second year at Frostburg State as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and cross country programs. Originally from Warrenville, Illinois, Farr completed her master’s degree in sport administration from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in August 2012. In 2010, Farr graduated from Calvin College with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and business communications. Despite getting hired last February, Farr helped the track & field teams to successful indoor and outdoor seasons in 2012. During the indoor campaign, the Bobcat men finished runner-up while the women took fourth. During the spring outdoor season, both Bobcat squads took fourth at the CAC Championships. At Bowling Green, Farr served as a graduate assistant in Student-Athlete Services, where she was involved with academic mentoring and Student-Athlete Affairs/Life Skills programming. She also served as a jogging instructor and research assistant for the Department of Human Movement, Sport, & Leisure Studies. Additionally, Farr competed as a member of Bowling Green’s indoor track and field team in 2011, where she specialized in the mile and went on to race unattached during the outdoor season. At Calvin College, Farr garnered two Academic All-American awards. On the track, she received All-American honors at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships after finishing sixth with her teammates in the distance medley relay. She was also a national provisional qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2009 and 2010. In cross country, Farr served as a co-captain for her team that placed third at the 2009 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships. In 2008, she earned All-Region honors and was a member of the national runner-up team. Outside of college athletics, Farr has a USATF Level I coaching certification and served as the head basketball coach at Bowling Green Christian Academy for 5th-8th grade girls. Farr has completed two Chicago marathons and continues to train as a member of Dave’s Racing Team based in Toledo, Ohio.

Katie Colburn

Katie Colburn enters her second year as a graduate assistant at Frostburg State University in 2012-13. In her first season, Colburn worked with the hurdlers, sprinters, and multievent participants. The FSU men’s squad finished second at the CAC Indoor Championships, while both the men and women captured fourth during the CAC Outdoor Championships and a total of six student-athletes earned allconference honors during the outdoor season. Colburn came to Frostburg after a successful track and field career at Kutztown University. She served as a team captain for her junior and senior seasons and earned All-America honors in her senior year after her Distance Medley Relay team finished seventh at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. In the outdoor season, Colburn would provisionally qualify for nationals in the heptathlon and the 400 hurdles. Also at Kutztown, Colburn earned Academic All-America honors in the spring of 2011. She was a member of the Dean’s List for each semester during her undergraduate career and was named a scholar athlete from 2007-2011. Colburn graduated in May of 2011 with a bachelor’s of science in electronic media with a concomitant in journalism and public relations. She is currently pursuing her M.B.A. at Frostburg.

Women The return of two gifted sprinters, including one All-Capital Athletic Conference performer, will headline a young Frostburg State University women’s track & field team in 2012-13. Fourteen freshmen and sophomores and just two juniors makeup the roster for the Bobcats under sixth-year head coach Dale Luy. “With such a young squad, our goal is to improve every week,” said Luy. “If we practice well, it will translate into progress.” Junior Morgan Carroll and sophomore Alexis Bush return as All-CAC performers from a year ago and should lead the sprinters and jumpers during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Carroll garnered All-CAC honors, won the 400-meter dash and qualified for the ECAC Championships with a career best 58.69 during the outdoor championships. She also earned all-conference honors after taking second in the high jump at 1.52 meters. She posted four wins in the 400 during the outdoor campaign and placed in the top-five on 10 occasions between the 400 and high jump. In her first season of collegiate action, Bush took home a combined 14 topfive finishes between the indoor and outdoor seasons. She will once again serve as the squad’s top short sprinter after taking fifth in the 60-meter dash (8.34) during the indoor CAC championships and fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.39) during the outdoor meet. Bush could also double as the team’s top long jumper as she captured a win at the Susquehanna Invite (5.06 meters) during the indoor season and captured third during both the indoor and outdoor league championships. Coach Luy is confident that a trio of freshmen will bolster the sprints and hurdles. Elisha Young is a versatile athlete that will compete in the short distance hurdles and all sprints from the 60-meter dash to the 400. Shana Ashby will focus on the long sprints (200 and 400-meter dashes), while Russia Tatum will add depth in the short sprints, but could develop into the long sprints by midseason. Sophomore Christina Smith returns to the roster as the top thrower from a season ago and should pace the team again this season. After competing in just three meets during the indoor season, she rebounded with a strong outdoor campaign that included three top-10 efforts in the CAC Championships with a fifth-place finish in the javelin (28.40 meters). She posted her lone victory of the season at the Mason-Dixon Invitational at 29.22 meters. Katie Hoag enters her sophomore season with the coach’s expectations of being the team’s number two thrower. She posted five top-10 finishes during the indoor season, and like Smith, rebounded with a solid outdoor year. She capped the spring at the CAC Championships with an 11th place finish in the javelin (18.50 meters). The coaching staff is excited about freshman Casi Chisholm who should pro-

vide depth to the throwers and could potentially become the team’s third thrower. Jen Bower, the second junior on this year’s roster, will help lead the distance runners after being one of the top performers during the cross country season. Bower, who will focus primarily on the longer distances, captured a combined four top-10 finishes last season, including a 10th-place finish at the CAC Outdoor Championships in the 10,000-meter run (48:34.99). Sophomores Gabbi Maher and Bryn Allston will guide the Bobcats’ middistance team. Maher captured eighth place in the 1,500-meter run at the outdoor championships (5:14.92), while Allston finished 16th in the 800-meter run (3:19.61) at the indoor championships. Men The Frostburg State men’s squad resembles the women’s side with a young and talented roster. However, the Bobcat men possess more experience and have depth at every event that will help score at the league championships. Luy, the 2012 CAC Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year, is confident that his men’s team can compete with the top teams in the league despite the youth on the roster. Without a doubt, this year’s strength resides with the throwers. FSU returns All-CAC performers at just about every event, including a league champion from the 2011 outdoor championships. Senior Christian Smith returns for his final season with big expectations as he should be one of the top throwers in the CAC. Smith totaled 19 top-10 finishes during both seasons, including 10 top-five finishes and five runner-up showings. He grabbed All-CAC Second Team honors in the shot put during both the indoor and outdoor league championships after taking second place each time. He tossed 13.95 meters during the inaugural indoor championships that was key in helping the men’s squad rally late in the meet for a second place finish overall. He capped the outdoor season with a 14.10-meter throw at the outdoor championships. Seth Stine returns for his sophomore campaign with a ton of momentum after capping the outdoor season in stellar fashion. He grabbed All-CAC honors after finishing in second place in the javelin at the outdoor championships with a season best throw of 50.90 meters. His primary focus will be the javelin again in 2012-13. Junior Trey Davis has showed continued improvement throughout his career and the coaching staff has high expectations for him this year. Davis, who competes primarily in the shot put, discus and hammer throws, captured a combined 16 top-10 finishes and five top-five finishes spanning both seasons last year. He posted second place in the hammer (33.72 meters) at the Maroon Invitational that helped the Bobcat men to the team victory in the first meet of the outdoor season. He capped the outdoor season with a sixth-place effort in the hammer (40.02) at the CAC Championships. home 11th in the hammer throw (29.15 meters) at the conference championships. Junior Andre Arthur competed in just two meets last year and returns to the roster after a splendid freshman campaign. In his two outings last spring, Arthur captured wins in the shot put (12.89 meters) and the discus (39.19 meters) at the Maroon Invitational at Roanoke College that opened the outdoor season. In 2011, Arthur burst on the scene and grabbed the CAC Championship in the discus at 40.70 meters. He finished with six top-10 finishes that spring. Versatile decathlete Devin Francillon returns for his sophomore year and has the coaching staff optimistic about the 2012-13 season after a solid freshman year. He captured third at the Messiah Decathlon in mid-April with 5,420 points after sitting in second place after the first day. He could see time at some individual events such as the javelin and 400-meter hurdles as well the Ursinus Pentathlon and the Messiah Invitational & Multi Events. Francillon will also play a role in the success of FSU in the hurdles. He should compete in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles after capping the outdoor season with a third-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles (56.61) at the CAC Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Torez Cooke will be one of the Bobcats top high hurdlers. He finished fifth in 110-meter hurdles (16.39) at last spring’s CAC Championships. A pair of freshmen will also compete in the high hurdles and long jump this spring as Myles Burgess and Percy Haskins will join the track & field team after playing football for FSU this past fall. Over the last several years, Frostburg State has had some of the best sprinters in not only the CAC but the region. This season shouldn’t be any different as the Bobcats return four top sprinters from a year ago. Senior Jason Jackson will lead the returning group and enters the season in the best shape of his collegiate career. Jackson will focus on the short sprints and the 4x100-meter relay. He captured eighth in the 100-meter dash (11.38) at the CAC Outdoor Championships and helped the 4x100 team to a win (43.32) at the Juniata Quad Invite in late March. Junior Matthew Collins will focus on the long sprints and the 4x400-meter relay this season and is also in the best shape since his arrival at FSU. He captured a pair of top-10 finishes in the 400-meter dash and finished 12th in the same event at the CAC Outdoor Championships (52.63). Xzavier Robertson returns for his senior season and is one of the most decorated athletes on the roster. However, he will see limited action this season with academic commitments that are needed for graduation. Robertson finished 16th in the 60-meter dash (7.08) at the ECAC Indoor Championships and captured fourth in the same event at the CAC Championships (7.15). In total, he had three fourth place finishes in the 60 during the indoor season and two top-10 finishes in the 200. During the outdoor season, Robertson grabbed five top-5 finishes and was sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.23) at the CAC Championships.

Senior Tyler Scruggs, like Collins, will concentrate on the long sprints and should be a key member of the 4x400-meter relay team. He didn’t compete last season, but he took home three top-5 finishes in the 400-meter dash during the 2011 outdoor campaign. All-CAC selection Chris Rickell returns for his second year with the team and will again power the Bobcats in the high jump. He captured third place in the high jump (1.87 meters) at the CAC Indoor Championships and garnered All-CAC honors after taking second in the event at the outdoor championships at 1.93 meters. He finished the outdoor season with 10 top-5 finishes, including a win in the high jump at the Maroon Invitational at Roanoke College in mid-March. The Frostburg State distance group will be led by a pair of All-CAC cross country selections and talented sophomore Anthony Hayden. Senior Gavin Caupp and junior Pat Mead garnered Second Team All-CAC cross country honors in the fall and both have the potential to earn honors during the track & field season. Caupp will handle the long distance events (5,000 and 10,000-meter runs) while Mead will focus on the 800-5,000-meter runs. Caupp won the 3,000-meter run (9:11.21) at the Goucher Invitational and was sixth in the 5,000-meter run (15:47.49) at the CAC Championships, both during the outdoor season. Meanwhile, Mead grabbed third in the 3,000-meter run (9:26.53) at the Goucher Invitational and was fifth in the 1,500-meter run (4:07.72) at the CAC Championships. Hayden capped his first season in a Bobcat uniform with a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:58.66) at the CAC Outdoor Championships. He has a lot of potential and the coaching staff will have him concentrate on the middistance events again this year. “This year our relay teams have a lot of raw, talented runners” stated Luy. “However, we also possess quality depth and the battle every week for a spot on the team (s) should be highly competitive.” The 4x100-meter relay spots are up for grabs as the team heads into the 2013 portion of its schedule. Both Jason Jackson and Xzavier Robertson ran in a leg in the relay at one point during the outdoor season and both helped the team the a win (43.12) at the Mason-Dixon Invitational at Gettysburg. Tyler Scruggs and Matthew Collins are two potential runners for the 4x400meter relay team along with freshman Kenny Sammons. Collins was a member of the relay team last spring and helped the Bobcats to a third-place finish (3:24.99) at the outdoor CAC meet. The distance medley relay (DMR) potentially has the most talent of the relay teams as Gavin Caupp, Pat Mead and Anthony Hayden will likely have a spot while the fourth spot is up for grabs. Both Scruggs and Collins could fill the fourth leg as the season rolls along.

Frostburg State University Track & Field From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
