Head Coach Megan Foy was selected from a national search as the head coach of the Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team and is the eighth head coach in the program’s 46-year history. “Being selected to lead Frostburg State’s women’s lacrosse program is a great honor. I could not be more excited to embark on this coming season with a group of truly talented athletes and knowledgeable assistant coaching staff. I have a very strong feeling that FSU women’s lacrosse is primed for a big season among the competitive teams of the Capital Athletic Conference.” Foy inherits a team that finished off its first year in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2011. The Bobcats advanced to the league tournament and placed two athletes on the all-conference team, including the CAC Rookie of the Year selection. Foy comes to FSU after spending the last year and a half as an assistant coach at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. Last spring, she helped the Pacers to a program best 13-5 overall record and first-ever bid to the ECAC Tournament. Marywood earned the top seed in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament and had six players selected to the All-CSAC teams. Prior to Marywood, Foy served as the head coach of the Ravens Lacrosse Club Program in Baltimore, Md. in 2009-10 and was an assistant coach for the Green Turtle Lacrosse Club in Bel Air, Md. in 2008-09. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from fellow CAC member York (Pa.) College in May 2010. She was a standout four-year member of the Spartan lacrosse team. She was a two-year captain, helped the team to 35 wins during her four years and is the school’s record holder in groundballs in a single game. On the offensive end, Foy scored 61 goals and handed out 13 assists. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in human services with a concentration in health & wellness at Liberty University.

Assistant Coaches Kim McDaniel College: St. Andrews Presbyterian
Assistant Coach Kimberly McDaniel is entering her first season as a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team. McDaniel was a four-year starter in the midfield at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. She served as team captain for the Knights for the 2009-2011 seasons and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player her junior and senior seasons. In 2011, she was selected to play in the IWLCA/Under Armour North/South Senior All-Star Game and was named Honorable Mention NCAA Division II AllAmerican by usacollegelacrosse.com. McDaniel currently holds career records at St. Andrews for goals (137) and points (190). She is also second in
school history with 53 assists. McDaniel’s coaching experience includes being a camp counselor at Lax-N-Soco for two summers where she organized and led lacrosse activities and assisted the camp director. McDaniel earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in the spring of 2011. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in special education.
Kelly Ryan College: Catholic
Assistant Coach Kelly Ryan is entering her first season as a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team in 2012. As a leader, Ryan brings a wealth of experience to the Frostburg coaching staff. Ryan taught lacrosse skills at Mclean Clinics in McLean, Virginia for three years and worked recreation camps at Hofstra University for four years. At Hofstra, she instructed and supervised multiple activities for middle school and elementary school students. She also was a camp counselor at Levittown Island Trees Recreation Camp from 2005-2007. On the playing field, Ryan was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s lacrosse and women’s basketball teams at Catholic University. In lacrosse, she was named Second Team All-Landmark Conference in 2010 as a midfielder, and helped the Cardinals win four-straight Landmark Conference Championships with four-consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Catholic University in elementary education in May of 2011. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in special education.

2012 Season Preview It’s an old cliché with a new and fresh mentality. When a new coaching staff takes over the reins of a program, new faces and new team strategies become part of a long and timeconsuming process. However, the 2012 Frostburg State women’s lacrosse team isn’t getting caught up in new beginnings or new strategies. In fact, Bobcat players and coaches alike are focusing on just one thing heading into the season opener: team cohesion. Head coach Megan Foy took over the program just a few months prior to the start of the season and has pressed on her team the importance of playing as a unit and focusing on the team. “We are putting an emphasis on team cohesion and improving our ability to play better as a whole,” stated Foy. “There is a solid foundation already in place and the coaching staff is looking to build on that and continue to get better.” The Bobcats return all but two starters from a year ago, including the top five scorers and two All-Capital Athletic Conference selections.
KAPUSTIN
Attack Frostburg boasts an experienced offense with the return of five players from a year ago including the attack’s top three scorers. Senior Ali Kapustin and sophomores Megan White and Katelyn Kesecker combined for 98 points, 64 goals and 34 assists in 17 games. Kapustin has been a two-year starter and has appeared in 48 games during her previous three years. She should be the vocal leader of the attack this season and will make sure that everyone on offense is on the same page. She has led the team in points in each of the last two years and should be near the top of the roster again this year. Last spring, she scored 57 points behind 36 goals and 21 assists. She enters her final season ranked 14th all-time in school history in assists (37), 15th in goals (83) and 17th in points (120). The duo of White and Kesecker fit right in as freshmen last season, forming a solid foundation for the future. White is a talented player that is coming off an injury that hampered her playing time a year ago. She has rebounded well and should improve on her 14 goals and six assists in just 11 games last spring. Kesecker finished fourth on the team in scoring (21 points) with 14 goals and seven assists. She is a tall and athletic player that has the ability to convert tough passes into scoring opportunities. Seniors Brittany Spencer along with juniors Myra Derbyshire and Rachel Dwyer will also be featured in the offense. Spencer is one of three seniors on the roster and is a leader both on and off the field. She will see quality playing time in her final year after starting all 17 games as a junior. Last season, she scored nine goals and added three assists. Derbyshire and Dwyer appeared in a combined 30 games with 15 starts. Both players are level-headed and the coaching staff is expecting more from the pair this spring. Possessing stick skills, Derbyshire has a knack for finding the open space and should improve on her four goals and one assist from last spring. Dwyer adds good experience and registered nine goals and one assist in 2011. Freshman Emily Walker will figure into the mix on the attack for the Bobcats in 2012. She is a patient player, which will help her learn the pace of the college game while her field sense and composure will help her to work into the lineup. Sophomore Diana Turbeville has battled injury throughout the preseason and will look to get back into her 2011 form where she appeared in 10 games and scored two goals and one assist. Once healthy, she should compete for playing time. Midfield The 2012 Bobcat midfield is comprised of two captains, three returners and a wealth of talent. Juniors Taylor Cassatt and Chelsea Feeney and sophomore Malory Brunett combined for 101 points in just 17 games a year ago. Cassatt and Feeney have been named team captains while Brunett returns after earning 2011 CAC Rookie of the Year honors. The midfield has good depth as the group provides different types of players with all types of skill sets. This unique array of talent should allow the coaching staff the versatility to mix and match different types of personnel. Cassatt started 17 games a year ago and has appeared in all 33 games during her career. Last season, she finished third on the roster in points (41) and goals (22) and tied for fourth in assists (8). She is a very aggressive player that should make some big conversions in the midfield with her style of play. Feeney is a very quick and agile player and has great game awareness. She started 17 games and totaled 15 points on six goals and nine assists. Brunett returns to the starting lineup after a highly successful freshman campaign. One of two players for FSU to earn All-CAC

2012 Season Preview honors, Brunett tied for the team lead and finished eighth in the league in goals scored (36). She caught fire in the final seven games of the last season, totaling 27 points while scoring four goals in four different games. Her on the field intensity and sense of urgency should help her to improve on her numbers this spring. Kaitlyn Dudley, Meredith Johnson and Jessica Jones are three freshmen that will help fill out the midfield and push for significant playing time. Dudley is a hard working athlete that gives 110 percent. She has a strong shot and will provide offense out of the midfield. Johnson is a very technically skilled player and a very accurate shooter, while Jones is a very athletic and team oriented player.
PONGRACZ
Defense Despite the changes to the coaching staff, the Bobcat defensive unit has a group of five returning players that will provide leadership to the rest of the team. The defensive unit communicates well and has the best team dynamic. Junior Jenny Davis returns to quarterback the defense this spring. She is a very vocal player that directs the defense very well. She started 16 of 17 games last spring and picked up 20 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers. Senior Heather Pongracz returns to the team in recovery from a season-ending injury. She enters the season as a front runner for a starting spot on defense. In 2010, she scooped up 13 ground balls, caused seven turnovers and registered two points on the offensive end. Junior Megan Johnson returns for her second year of college lacrosse and is considered one of the most athletic players on the roster. She is a physically strong player and has a good awareness when it comes to protecting the goal. She picked up 20 ground balls in 15 starts. Sophomore Cianna Lawrence is one of just two Bobcats to receive All-CAC accolades last year after taking home second team honors. She finished fifth in the CAC in caused turnovers (25) and 10th in ground balls (33). She has a desire for the ball and her increased effort in both practice and games should help to increase her numbers from last season. Foy sees a huge upside to freshman Ellie Garner. A very vocal player, Garner is an aggressive defender that is not afraid to take on the team’s top player. Freshman Jessica Norris will also figure into the mix and battle for playing time on defense. Goalie The goalkeeper position has been a pleasant surprise for the coaching staff with the return of two talented players from last season. Sophomore Karoline Miller has the most experience after starting all 17 games a year ago with 171 saves. However, junior Naomi Swann has been a surprise this spring with how fast she is learning a new system. She appeared in three games and made five saves a year ago. Despite the return of Miller, the coaching staff has maintained that the starting position is still open and that both players have a shot at landing in the net when the first game rolls around. Schedule The Bobcats will look to improve on last year’s overall record and make a deeper run in the CAC Tournament, but have a tough schedule standing in their way. At first glance, FSU will face three teams that are ranked in the IWLCA Preseason Top 20. TCNJ (20-1) checks in as the highest ranked opponent for the Bobcats at No. 2 in the preseason poll, followed by No. 6 Salisbury (19-3) and No. 17 Mary Washington (13-8), both of whom are conference opponents. However, a deeper look reveals that there are plenty of other tough opponents lurking outside the preseason ranking. Frostburg will face a challenging out of conference slate that includes Shenandoah (21-5), Babson (10-8), Colorado College (13-3), Susquehanna (7-8), Bridgewater (6-10) and Washington & Jefferson (13-8). Babson earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 while W&J has appeared in the ECAC Tournament in each of the last two years. Although FSU faces stiff competition in the CAC, the Bobcats’ new team philosophy coupled with a fresh work ethic has the coaching staff confident for the 2012 season.

Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
