Dale Luy is entering his seventh year at the helm of the Frostburg State University track & field teams in 2013-14. Luy has been highly successful during his six-year tenure with the Bobcat programs. Last year, Luy led the Frostburg men’s and women’s teams to four top-five finishes at the CAC Championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Both squads captured fourth during the indoor season, while the men took third and the women fourth during the spring outdoor campaign. The Bobcats totaled five All-CAC honorees during both seasons, while the women grabbed indoor titles in the high jump and long jump. Frostburg capped both the indoor and outdoor seasons with a total of four student-athletes at the ECAC Championships. Trey Davis set the school record in the weight throw at 50ft. 0.75in. In 2011-12, Frostburg saw marked improvements during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Luy garnered CAC Coach of the Year honors after leading the men’s team to a runner-up showing at the inaugural indoor championships. The women finished fourth during the indoor season, while both the men and women grabbed fourth place during the outdoor championships, a meet hosted by FSU. A total of 12 student-athletes were selected to the All-CAC teams, while 13 competed at the ECAC Championships. The Bobcats men’s team was ranked in the top-10 in the Mideast Region for several weeks during the outdoor season, while FSU won the Roanoke Invitational and finished second at the Goucher Invite. In 2010-11, Luy guided the Bobcats through their first year as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. The FSU men finished fourth while the women were fifth. Five men grabbed All-CAC honors, led by two first-team awards for Chauncey Manson, while Emily Furr was the lone female to earn all-conference honors. During the outdoor season, nine of Luy’s student-athletes appeared in either the NCAA or ECAC Championships. Furr represented FSU at the NCAA and ECAC Outdoor Championships in the triple jump while seven other Bobcats represented Frostburg at the ECAC’s. As a team, the Bobcats collected six AllECAC honors with top-five finishes in the women’s triple jump, men’s 200-meter dash and the men’s 4x100-meter relay. Frostburg had just as much success at the ECAC Indoor Championships as six athletes participated. Furr qualified in the triple jump, Manson earned a spot in the 200-meter dash and Morgan Carroll competed in the 500-meter dash. The Bobcat 4x200-meter relay team also ran at the ECAC Championships. In 2009-10, a pair of Luy’s student-athletes qualified for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Emily Furr hit provisional marks in both the triple jump and high jump and David Thomas automatically qualified for the long jump. Luy also had 10 athletes qualify for the ECAC Championships during both the indoor and outdoor championships. The Bobcat women’s team captured fifth-place finishes at both the MasonDixon Conference Indoor Championships and the Mason-Dixon Invitational during the outdoor season. On the men’s side, the Bobcats captured a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Marietta College Invitational in January and the Don Frail Invitational at Marietta in April. In 2008-09, Luy guided the Bobcat women’s team to a ninth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Sumer Rohrs and Emily Furr captured a combined three All-American honors during the outdoor championships while Rohrs captured national championships in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles and was named the USTFCCCA Division III National Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. On the men’s side, Brian Leiter earned All-American honors in the 800meter and 1,500-meter runs. Luy also led the women’s team to the 2009 Mason-Dixon Conference

Frostburg State University Track & Field Dale Luy Head Coach Seventh Season Championship with a slim 123-122 victory over defending champion Christopher Newport. Furr was named the Field Athlete of the Meet while Luy was named the Coach of the Meet. During the 2008-09 indoor season, Luy led the women’s team to a 21st place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Rohrs earned her third-straight national title in the 55-meter hurdles while Leiter earned All-American honors in the one mile run. During the 2007-08 indoor season, Luy helped the Bobcats to an individual national champion and All-American, an ECAC Champion and four All-ECAC selections and five individual Mason-Dixon Conference Champions. Luy had even more success during the outdoor season, as he again led Frostburg State to a individual national champion and a pair of All-American finishers. He helped the Bobcats collect two ECAC Championships, three All-ECAC awards and six individual Mason-Dixon Conference champions. Luy also serves as FSU’s head cross country coach. This past fall season, the FSU men finished fifth while the women were sixth at the league championships. Gavin Caupp and Patrick Mead captured All-CAC honors for the Bobcat men. Luy, who brought over 30 years of coaching experience to FSU spanning both the high school and collegiate levels, came to Frostburg having spent three years as an assistant coach at Gettysburg College. While with the Bullets, he worked with the throwing events and pole vault. He had one NCAA Div. III provisional qualifier (men’s discuss), two Centennial Conference women’s discus champions, one conference women’s pole vault champion and one conference men’s javelin champion. His athletes also set six school records and 16 all-time top ten performances. Before Gettysburg, Luy served as the head track & field coach for six years at Elizabethtown Area High School. He had 14 PIAA District III qualifiers, two state qualifiers and set two school records. He directed the renovation and new placement of the track and field facilities working with engineers, architects and district officials. From 1996-2005, Luy was the head coach for the winter track and field program at Elizabethtown Area High School as well. He had two athletes qualify for the state indoor championships. Coaching Staff

Frostburg State University Track & Field the spring season from 1995-1999. He led his runners to four school records, one PIAA bronze medal and two PIAA state medals. While working with the high school, Luy was the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at nearby Elizabethtown College from 1986-1998. He had multiple Middle Atlantic States Conference Academic honorees including a Rhodes Scholar in 1994. He guided the women’s team to 10-consecutive winning seasons, school record in wins (10) twice and second place MAC finishes in 1993 and 1994. On the men’s side, he led the team to back-to-back winning seasons in 1990 and 1991 for the first time in 24 years. Luy also initiated the indoor and outdoor track and field club teams at the college from 1987 thru 1997. Despite being just a club program, the teams competed against many varsity level programs including the MAC Indoor Championships. He has also served as an interim assistant coach at Dickinson College (1988) and the head track and field coach at Lower Dauphin High School (1983-1986). He holds numerous certificates including a USATF Level II certification in sprints/hurdles and American Red Cross certification in standard first aid and infant & child CPR. Luy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Gettysburg in 1978, Masters of Education in Teaching and Curriculum from Penn State - Harrisburg in 1991 and his Doctor in Sports Management from the United State Sports Academy in 2007. While at Gettysburg, Luy was a four-year letterwinner for the track and field teams taking home NCAA All-American honors in 1976 as a member of the 440-yard relay team and in 1977 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Kendall Luy

Kendall Luy enters her third year as a full-time assistant track & field coach for Frostburg State University in 2013-14. Luy guided the Bobcat throwers to new heights in 2012-13. Frostburg placed three throwers on the All-CAC teams during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Trey Davis was a First Team All-CAC honoree during the outdoor season in the hammer throw, grabbed second-team honors during the indoor season and he set the school record in the weight throw at Susquehanna Invitational (50ft. 0.75in.). Christian Smith took Second Team All-CAC honors during the outdoor season and finished ninth at the ECAC Championships in the shot put. On the women’s side, Christina Smith earned Second Team All-CAC honors in the shot put during the indoor season. In 2011-12, Luy helped the Bobcats to successful outings during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Frostburg men finished runner-up at the inaugural CAC Indoor Championships while the women earned fourth place. During the outdoor championships, both squads captured fourth place. A total of 12 student-athletes were selected to the All-CAC teams, while 13 competed at the ECAC Championships. Luy, selected from a national search in the summer of 2011, served as a graduate assistant with the FSU track & field program for three years (2008-11) and played a vital role in the resurgence of the throwing events for both the men’s and women’s teams. Luy also served as one of the team’s primary recruiters during that time. The Bobcat throwers turned in successful results at several meets during both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2010-11. Under Luy’s guidance, the Bobcats captured 16 top-10 finishes in the throwing events, including the men’s discus title at the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. Overall, the Bobcat men finished fourth while the women were fifth in Frostburg’s first year as a member of the CAC. At the Ohio Open in early May, a meet consisting primarily of NCAA Division I and II schools, the FSU throwers set 18 personal records and recorded 20 top-10 finishes. In the two previous years, Luy helped the Bobcat teams to numerous top-10 finishes, including the 2008-09 Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championship title and a ninth-place overall finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor National Championships. Luy arrived at FSU after a four-year athletic career with the Susquehanna track & field program. While there, she participated in the javelin, shot put, sprints and relays. She was an NCAA Division III National provisional qualifier in the javelin in 2008 and was a Landmark Conference All-Academic Team selection during the 2007-08 year. She was also a three-time All-Middle Athletic All-Conference selection. In 2003, she participated in the USATF Junior Olympics at the regional championships. The four-year Dean’s List Scholarship student and Presidential Fellow, graduated in May 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in psychology. Until being hired at Frostburg State, Luy had worked at Bret’s Adventure, helping to facilitate activities which require social interaction skills, assist with home school lessons and provide support for autistic children. Luy was also the manager for the Office of Multicultural Affairs while at Susquehanna. Luy graduated in May 2011 with her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Frostburg State University.

Assistant Coach Sixth Season

Joseph Brown

Joseph Brown enters his first year as an assistant coach for the Frostburg State University track & field programs in 2013-14. He will work the hurdles and jumps for the Bobcats. Brown comes to Frostburg following a successful stint as the assistant track and field coach at Amherst County High School from 2010-2013. Specifically, he helped with training of the sprinters, hurdlers, and vertical and horizontal jumpers. In 2012, Brown coached the indoor 4x400 team to a Virginia state championship, as well as setting a Virginia state record in the process. Amherst’s men’s team finished as the runner up in the Seminole District for both indoor and outdoor in 2012 and 2013, as well as a Region III runner up finish for indoor and outdoor in 2013. Additionally, the men’s team finished seventh place in 2012 and fifth place in 2013 at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) AA Indoor State

Assistant Coach First Season

Championships. Brown also served as the assistant track & field coach for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Team Elite in 2012. He is also a USA Track & Field Level 1 certified coach. As a member of the Lees McRae track & field team from ‘06-’10, and team captain from ‘09-’10, Brown brings a wealth of experience to the FSU team. He was part of Conference Carolina championship teams from ‘08-’10, and was also an all-conference and all-region performer in the 110-meter hurdles during that same time. Brown earned his master’s degree in sport management from Liberty University in 2012. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management with a minor in business management from Lees McRae College in 2010.

Earl Graves Assistant Coach First Season

Earl Graves is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Frostburg State University track & field programs in 2013-14. He will assist wth the sprints and jumps for the Bobcat teams. Graves arrives at Frostburg having served as the head men’s track & field coach at Jefferson Forest High School from May ‘09 to January ‘12. While at Jefferson, he led the team to an 11th place finish in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Outdoor Championships Group AA in 2010. In addition to his coaching experience, Graves also earned his USA Track &

Field Level 1 Certification in September of 2012. Before he started his coaching career, Graves was a successful student-athlete for the Lynchburg College track & field team. He was part of seven Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship teams from ‘06-’09. Individually, Graves was also an ODAC outdoor champion for the 400-meter dash, 4x100, and the 4x400 in 2009. In total, he was a four-time Division III national qualifier from 2007 to 2009. In his final year at Lynchburg in 2009, he was given the team’s Most Valuable Runner Award. Graves graduated from Lynchburg with his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2009.

Depth and more balance were two points that seventh-year head coach Dale Luy stressed about his 2013-14 Frostburg State University track & field teams. While the Bobcat men’s team boasts a 52-man roster, the women have improved all across the board with better talent at every event. “We are deeper in every event on the men’s side, while the women will have more event coverage and more balance than in recent years,” noted Luy. Three All-CAC selections highlight a talented women’s roster that also contains some very talented and promising newcomers. A closer look inside the men’s roster reveals just four seniors, but the return of two ECAC Championship qualifiers, two All-CAC performers and a school record holder in the weight throw. Luy added that the men’s roster will feature a lot of tough competition for spots in meets, especially when it pertains to the Capital Athletic Conference Championships during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Women Senior Morgan Carroll, junior Alexis Bush and junior Christina Smith return after garnering All-CAC honors during the 2013 CAC Indoor Championships. The threesome will be joined by a wealth of young talent and depth as the Bobcats look to improve in the overall standings in the CAC. Carroll returns for her final year in an FSU uniform and will focus primarily on the high jump. She captured the CAC’s indoor high jump title last year (1.62 meters) and took second in the 400-meter dash (1:00.48). A four-time All-CAC honoree, Carroll posted two wins in the high jump and qualified for the ECAC Championships in the same event during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Arguably the team’s best all-around athlete, Bush is one of the CAC’s top long jumpers and sprinters. She currently ranks 18th in the nation and qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships following a 5.26 meter jump at the season opening Marietta meet. A year ago, she earned First Team All-CAC honors during the indoor campaign after winning the league’s long jump at 5.11 meters. Together, Carroll and Bush capped the 2012-13 indoor season with an appearance at the ECAC Championships. Carroll took 17th in the high jump (1.54 meters), while Bush earned 13th in the long jump (5.27 meters). Smith rounds out the returning All-CAC performers for the Bobcat women. She possesses the strength and talent to compete in all throwing events, but she will focus primarily on the shot put and javelin once the outdoor season arrives. She highlighted her sophomore year with a second-place finish and secondteam all-conference honors in the shot put (10.77 meters) at the CAC Indoor

Championships. During the outdoor season, she won the javelin at 28.95 meters at the Mason-Dixon Invitational at Gettysburg. While Smith holds the lone All-CAC award among the throwers, coach Luy was quick to point out that the group has great talent and depth from top to bottom. Leading the way will be juniors Ericka Randolph and Tierra Cooke, along with sophomore Casi Chisholm and freshman Tiffany Cancel. After missing the 2012-13 year, Randolph returns for her third season after posting 13 top-10 finishes in the throwing events in 2011-12. She posted an indoor-best 9.99 meters (3rd place) in the shot put at Hagerstown. Chisholm has seen big improvement so far this season and should be the squad’s top performer in the weight throw. She captured 10th in the weight throw (12.04 meters) at the WVU Invitational last weekend. Cooke and Cancel are new to the roster this year and should push one another throughout both seasons. A foursome of young and talented sprinters/hurdlers will add plenty of depth and points at their respective events. Sophomore Russia Tatum competed during the 2012-13 indoor season and recorded four top-10 finishes, including a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:12.78) at the Marty Pushkin Invite at West Virginia University. Ana Gomerez, Kelsey Mellotte and Amy Virostek have opened their freshman seasons with solid results and the coaching staff is optimistic about the future as they adjust to collegiate meets. Gomerez registered third place in the long jump (4.94 meters), while Mellotte took fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:13.51) at the Marietta First Glimpse meet. The duo also helped the Bobcats to second place in the 4x200-meter relay in 1:53.15. Virostek captured seventh (1:08.91) in the 400-meter dash at the WVU Invitational. The added overall team depth will also have a big impact on the distance events. Junior Bryn Allston possesses the most experience of the group, but she will be pushed by the freshmen duo of Casey Columbus and Alexis DeVault. Allston finished eighth in the 1,500-meter run (5:34.07) at the CAC Outdoor Championships and also registered a pair of top-five finishes in the 800meter run. Columbus was FSU’s top cross country runner this past fall and should continue that success on the track. Men Two All-CAC performers, one a school record holder, and an ECAC Championship qualifier highlight the throwers and make up the most talented group of the FSU men’s team. Senior Trey Davis and junior Seth Stine will lead the charge after garnering All-CAC honors over the past two years, however, they will be pushed by one of the deepest and most talented rosters in the league. Davis will compete in all throwing events, but his talent lies in the weight/hammer throw. He captured Second Team All-CAC honors in the weight throw during the indoor season and garnered first-team honors during the outdoor campaign in the hammer. He set the school record in the weight throw (15.26 meters) at the Susquehanna Invitational and finished the indoor season with five top-five finishes, capped by a second-place finish at the CAC Championships (15.01). During the outdoor season, Davis finished with five top-five finishes in the hammer, including a CAC Championship with a toss of 44.69 meters. Stine has emerged as the team’s primary thrower in the javelin and will push for All-CAC honors again after being named to the second team as a freshman in 2012. Last season, he won the javelin (54.77 meters) at the Bobcat Invitational and took third in the event at the CAC Championships (50.42 meters). He totaled 11 top-10 finishes during the outdoor season and captured third in the discus (41.48 meters) at the CAC Championships. A week later, he qualified for the ECAC Championships in the discus (44.68 meters) at the Gator Invitational at Allegheny. While it comes as no surprise to the coaching staff, sophomore J.R. Lowery has emerged as one of the team’s top throwers after just one meet and has the potential to earn All-CAC honors. In his first year with FSU, he will focus on the shot put, weight/ hammer throw and the discus. At WVU, Lowery nearly toppled a pair of school records in the shot put and hammer throw and currently ranks 10th in the nation in the shot put (15.99 meters). Junior Giovanni Fitch and a pair of freshmen will add depth to the throwers and round out the talented group. Fitch captured 12 top-10 finishes last season and capped the indoor season with an eighth-place showing in the weight throw (12.40 meters) at the CAC Indoor Championships. Newcomers Patrick Broussoul and Donovan Burris will both compete in the shot put and discus. At the WVU Invitational, Burris captured 15th in the shot put (11.56 meters), while Broussoul finished 20th (10.48 meters). One of the Bobcats’ four seniors will accent a strong and deep distance group. Frostburg State University Track & Field conference indoor championships, Mead earned fourth place in the onemile run (4:37.61) and helped the distance medley relay team to third place in 11:17.26. During the outdoor season, Mead captured runner-up in the 3,000-meter run (9:24.90) at the Juniata College Invite. Freshman Brandon Redmond turned in a strong showing in his first collegiate meet, winning the 800-meter run in 2:02.78 at the Marietta First Glimpse. Returning for his third season as Frostburg’s primary high jumper will be junior Chris Rickell. A 2012 All-CAC honoree and ECAC Championship participant during the outdoor season, Rickell finished the 201314 campaign with a total of three wins, nine top-five finishes and a third-place effort (1.82 meters) at the CAC Indoor Championships. Sophomore Mark Wilburn has emerged as the team’s best triple jumper and should be very competitive within the CAC. In the season’s opening meet at Marietta, he captured seventh in the 300-meter dash (41.09) and seventh in the high jump (1.70 meters). A pair of Bobcats will compete for the team’s top spot in the long jump. Senior Greg Alexander posted four top-10 finishes in the long jump last spring, including a third-place showing (6.03 meters) at the Bobcat Invitational. Meanwhile, sophomore Chuck Lyles posted a pair of wins in the long jump last outdoor season at the Crusader Outdoor Classic at Susquehanna Univ. and the Bobcat Invitational. Coach Luy also noted that he feels his sprinters could be a very strong group within the CAC with their overall depth and talent. Junior Devin Francillon is coming off a fourth place finish (5,871 pts.) and All-ECAC honors at the outdoor championships in the two-day decathlon last spring. He is FSU’s lone decathlete, but is also the team’s strongest hurdler. He captured fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at the CAC Championships in 16.31. Senior Matt Collins and freshman Ian Williams will lead the way in the long sprints. Collins registered four total wins and eight top-five finishes last year and helped FSU to a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay (3:28.10) at the CAC Outdoor Championships. Williams has burst on the scene in his first year in a Bobcat uniform with four wins in two meets. Individually, he captured a win in the 500-meter dash (1:08.16) at Marietta and took gold in the 200-meter dash (23.14) at the WVU Invitational. Freshman Hossein Hakimi will add depth to the team’s long sprints, but his best event should be the 400-meter hurdles. He helped the Bobcat 4x200-meter relay team (1:34.51) to a win in their season opening meet at Marietta, while he individually recorded fifth place in the 200-meter dash (23.67) at WVU. Freshman Sterlyn Elder could be the team’s fastest short sprinter after opening his collegiate career with fifth place in the 55-meter dash (6.88) at Marietta.

Frostburg State University Track & Field From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
