Coaching Staff Carly Sweeney College: Keene State ‘04
Head Coach Carly Sweeney enters her third season at the helm of the Frostburg State University field hockey program in 2013. Last fall, Sweeney led the Bobcats to the CAC Tournament behind a 7-14 overall record, the most wins in a season since 2009. Frostburg finished 5-4 at Bobcat Stadium, including the FSU Tournament championship in early September. The Bobcats again led the league in saves (247), finished second in defensive saves (27) and fourth in scoring (44 goals). In 2011, FSU finished 5-15 overall and 1-5 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Despite the record, the Bobcats showed signs of improvement throughout the season, posting shutout wins over Sweet Briar (9-0), Shenandoah (4-0) and St. Vincent (6-0). The Bobcats led the league in saves (312) and save percentage (80%), finished fifth in scoring (42) and fourth in defensive saves (15). Sweeney, the program’s 14th coach, came to Frostburg
after serving as the head field hockey coach at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, Ca. since 2009. She led the Mavericks to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Playoff Quarterfinals in each season while guiding her 2010 team to a 19-8 record and the Serra Tournament Championship. Prior to La Costa, Sweeney was the top assistant coach at NCAA Division III Keene State College in Keene, N.H. During her four years (2005-09) with the program, she helped guide the team to a 68-26 overall record with four NCAA Tournament appearances and four Little East Conference (LEC) Titles. Sweeney graduated from Keene State in 2004 with her bachelor’s degree of arts in film. She was a four-year recipient of the Talent Scholarship for Film (2000-04) and won the Lefty Lablanc Award for Academic and Athletic Achievement in 2000. She also enjoyed a four-year playing career for the Owl field hockey team. She helped the squad to a 61-31 overall record and a 34-6 record in the LEC. In her final season, she led the team to a 19-6 overall slate, a perfect 10-0 LEC record and an ECAC Tournament Championship. She was awarded All-West Regional Field Hockey Honors and was named to the All-LEC team in 2004. Sweeney wass a Site Director for the USA Field Hockey Futures Program and was a videographer and editor for APEX Field Hockey.

Coaching Staff
Kaitlin Boerman College: McDaniel
Assistant Coach Kaitlin Boerman enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Frostburg State University field hockey team in 2013. Boerman comes to FSU after serving as the assistant field hockey coach at Moravian College for the last two years. She worked specifically with the forwards, midfielders and goalkeepers and coordinated all aspects of recruiting for the Greyhounds. Boerman helped MC to a 17 total wins during her tenure with five All-Landmark Conference selections. Prior to Moravian, Boerman worked as a coaching intern for the McDaniel College Green Terror in early 2011. She helped with the coaching staffs recruiting efforts and assisted with daily practice plans. Boerman brings a wealth of coaching experience to FSU having coached with the Nike Field Hockey Camp (2009-13), Reisterstown Indoor Field Hockey League (2008-11), World Camp USA (2009), Advanced Play Field Hockey Camp (2009)
and the Reisterstown Summer Field Hockey Camp (2009). Since 2009, Boerman has served as a National Field Hockey Association Futures Program Level I Coach, while guiding the U14, U16 and U19 teams at the Pennsylvania Regional Tournaments in both 2012 and 2013. As a student-athlete, Boerman was a four-year member of the McDaniel College field hockey team from 2007-10. She helped the team to 28 wins over her four years, including 18 in the Centennial Conference. She graduated from McDaniel in May of 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, including minors in both sport coaching and sport management.
Rebecca Corsones College: Utica ‘12
Graduate Assistant Coach Rebecca Corsones is in her second year as a graduate assistant coach for field hockey at Frostburg State University. She graduated magna cum laude from Utica College in 2012 with a degree in Communication Arts and Elementary Education. In her first year, she helped FSU to seven wins, the most since the 2009 season, and a berth in the CAC Tournament. While attending Utica, Corsones was named to the Division III NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Squad for four consecutive seasons. As a freshman (2008) Corsones earned Empire 8 Rookie of the Year and second team all-conference accolades. As a four year starter, she helped the Pioneers

to three playoff appearances (2009, 2010, and 2011). In her final season in 2011, she helped the team become the regular season champions. In addition, she was named all-conference honorable mention in her final year as a Pioneer. She leaves Utica with the record of having the most minutes played in school history. Corsones was also selected in 2010 to play in Barbados in the Sunshine Games as a part of the USAAI organization. Before attending Utica College, Corsones was a member of the Kingston High School varsity field hockey team and was four years starter. Her senior year her team went 18-0-1, while rewriting the school’s record books.

2013 Season Preview Surprise! That is the one word that Frostburg State head field hockey coach Carly Sweeney used to describe their upcoming 2013 season. The third-year coach is anxious to get the season underway and she and her staff have a feeling that they are going to surprise a lot of teams this season with the returning talent that fills their roster. And why not, the Bobcats return six starters, five seniors, three of their five leading scorers, while nine of the returning players saw action in at least 13 games a year ago. Sweeney was also quick to point out that the eight newcomers that have been added to the roster won’t be overshadowed by the returners, but rather push them for significant playing time. “We (coaching staff) are excited about our veterans and the leadership and game experience they bring to the team,” stated Sweeney. “But we are also confident that our newcomers will push the veterans for playing time. As a team and coaching staff, we feel we are going to surprise a lot of teams this season with how skilled
[ RANDEL ]
we really are.” A closer look inside the numbers adds further credibility to Sweeney’s notion of surprising teams this season. The “backbone” of the 2013 version of the Bobcats will be senior tri-captains Amanda Lennon, Tori Suess and Becky Randel. The trio have started a combined 143 games during their previous three seasons and each return for their final year with a starting spot wrapped up. Lennon, a midfielder, and Suess, a defender, started all 21 games a year ago and are expected to do so again this fall. Lennon finished eighth in scoring (2 goals, 1 assist), while Suess found the net once, but helped the Frostburg defense to four shutouts and a 3.43 goals against average. Meanwhile, Randel is the squad’s leading returning scorer after finding the net six times and handing out six assists. She will again be one of the team’s top-scoring forwards. Sweeney raved about three sophomores that have the potential to lock up staring spots after making waves throughout the preseason. Ashley Johnson, Jackie Best and Amber McCabe made strong contributions as freshmen and are some of the strongest players on the roster. Johnson started 18 games last fall and was fourth on the team in scoring (5 goals, 2 assists), while Best was fifth in scoring (3 goals, 2 assists) and started 12 contests. McCabe appeared in 15 games with five starts and should see an increased role this season. She tied for third on the team with four assists. Joining Randel on the front line attack this fall will be sophomore transfer Alexandra Darrow. The 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, Darrow led Shenandoah and the ODAC with 17 assists, while finishing second in the league with 37 points. With joining FSU, Darrow instantly becomes one of the team’s top players and should be one of the CAC’s top scorers. Senior Tiffany Weschler has started every game over the past two years and enters her final season with a defensive starting

2013 Season Preview position locked up. Weschler, who has six defensive saves over the past two years, gives the Bobcat defense an edge that the team hasn’t had in several years. Freshman Alisha Salomon returns to the Bobcat roster after suffering a season-ending injury prior to the 2012 season. An intelligent player and quick learner, Salomon was highly recruited and will be a starter in the backfield this fall. Junior Courtney Abell, junior Katie Farr and sophomore Kate Bickerstaff will see a lot of time in the forward rotation this season. While not starters, Sweeney feels the threesome is on par with the starting lineup and will be able to maintain the high level of play up
[ SU E SS ]
front. Farr led the group a year ago with two goals and two assists
while appearing in 13 games. In her first year of collegiate field hockey, Bickerstaff played in 14 games and registered one goal and two assists. Abell enters her third season with a lot of game experience (34 games) that includes one goal and two assists as a sophomore in 2011. There will also be a trio of newcomers that will be fighting for playing time in the midfield. Freshmen Ivy Meissner, Jacquelyn Nava and Taylor Bowen have been improving throughout the preseason and Sweeney is confident that the trio’s talent and skill level will explode over their collegiate careers. Rounding out the backline will be senior Jaclyn Sauer and sophomore Emma Wade. Both players understand the game very well and contribute game experience to the position. Wade and Sauer appeared in combined eight games in 2012. Freshman Eleanor Vials joins the Frostburg field hockey team as an exchange student from the United Kingdom. She is a versatile player that brings a different style and aspect to the team and she will see time in either the midfield or on defense. Freshman Naja Butler is a versatile, hardworking player that hasn’t honed in on a specific position during the preseason. However, Sweeney is confident in Butler’s willingness to learn the game. Referred to as field generals and leaders in the backfield, a pair of goalkeepers will battle for the starting position in net and have some very big shoes to fill. Gone is four-year starter Maggie Edwards, who made the sixth most saves in NCAA Division III history. Sophomore Megan Grimm returns after appearing in seven games with 22 saves in reserve action as a freshman. She was able to learn from Edwards last fall and should be able to use that knowledge and experience to her advantage. Freshman Jacqueline Gover is an extremely athletic goalkeeper that is learning the collegiate game very quickly according to Sweeney. She has been pushing Grimm throughout the preseason and should see plenty of time this fall.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
