Head Coach Tommy Pearce was chosen to start the new era of men’s lacrosse for Frostburg State University in the early summer of 2009. Entering his third season in 2013, Pearce guided the Bobcats to an 8-26 overall record and a 1-15 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference over the first two seasons. Last spring, the Bobcats posted wins over Shenandoah (14-6) and Washington & Jefferson (8-6) and suffered six losses by four goals or less. The Bobcats finished fourth in the CAC in groundballs (637), fifth in caused turnovers (144) and seventh in both goals (113) and assists (64). In the program’s first year in 2011, Frostburg finished 6-11 overall and 1-7 in the league. The Bobcats had two players finish in the top-10 in the league in scoring while Ryan Serio was named the CAC Rookie of the Year. Frostburg opened the season with a 10-3 win over Shenandoah and finished with wins over Neumann (209), St. Joseph’s (19-3), Susquehanna (10-9), Marymount (11-8) and Washington & Jefferson (12-6). Pearce came to Frostburg State University from Gettysburg College where he served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team for four seasons (2006-09). A native of Chestertown, Md., Pearce helped Gettysburg to an incredible run during his time with the Bullets. The team won the Centennial Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of those four seasons, including a national runner-up finish in 2009. Gettysburg collected an overall record of 66-12 and was consistently ranked in the top-10 in the nation, including a No. 5 ranking at the conclusion of his final season. Pearce, who earned the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association 2008 Division III Outstanding Assistant Coach award, helped recruit and coach 20 All-Americans while at Gettysburg, including six in 2009. Success at Gettysburg came not only as a coach for Pearce, but also as a player. He was a two-time AllAmerican, garnering First Team honors in 2001 as well as being named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Player of the Year. He helped the Bullets to four-

straight conference titles and the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III national championship game. Pearce graduated from Gettysburg in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in English and received his master’s degree from McDaniel College in 2008 in physical education and athletic administration.

2013 Season Preview After a disappointing and injury filled season in 2012, the Frostburg State University men’s lacrosse team is looking to turn the corner in 2013 and put last year in the rearview mirror. With several starters returning at every position and the return of 11 of the squad’s top 12 scorers, the Bobcats have high expectations for the spring season with the goal of making the CAC Tournament. “As a coaching staff and team, we decided early in the fall to put last season behind us and focus on getting better for this coming season,” said third year head coach Tommy Pearce. “We have great depth and talent this season and the guys have worked very hard to strengthen themselves during the offseason.” Defense On defense, the Bobcats return three starters, including two from last spring. Sophomore Zach Burkhardt returns to claim a starting spot after missing last year with an injury. Senior Jeff Nagle and sophomore Paul Newman combined to start in 23 games last spring. Nagle scooped up 26 ground balls and was third on the team with 15 caused turnovers. Newman returns for his second season after pacing the team in caused turnovers (18). Burkhardt started 15 of 17 games as a freshman in 2011 and led the team in caused turnovers (19), while adding 27 ground balls. Junior Kevin Kinney will also make a strong case to be in the defensive rotation. He has appeared in 27 games over his first two seasons with 16 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.

LARK

Goalie The Bobcats return junior Tyler Haines in net, but the coaching staff has added a trio of freshmen; Taylor Schmitz, Tom Kraemer and Mack Schwarz, that will challenge Haines for the starting position. Haines started 16 games as freshman and six last year before his season was cut short due to injury. He has made 267 saves over his first two years and totaled seven wins. Schmitz is a vocal keeper and a good shot stopper. He helped lead South Carroll High School to the state championships game. Kraemer has great size (6’1”, 220 lbs.) and fills up the cage. He was a great athlete at Parkside High School, as he also played quarterback for the football team. Schwarz is one of the tallest players on the team (6’5”) and is physically imposing. The coaching staff feels that he might be the best athlete of the group. Faceoff Junior Billy Lark has the most experience on the roster at the faceoff and has seen significant time over his first two years. He has a 55.3 win percentage (244-of-441) in 30 games. He has scooped up 83 ground balls in two years, while he finished last year with 51, good for third on the roster. Freshman Erik Geiser has really impressed the coaching staff so far this spring. Geiser is a faceoff specialist, but is very athletic with great speed and his athleticism will allow him to see time in the midfield and not just during faceoffs. Long Stick Midfield FSU will rotate three juniors at long stick midfield and the position will be handled almost by committee this spring. Juniors Branden Geldart and Jake McNew have two full seasons under their belts while Korey Bosley transferred to Frostburg prior to the start of the 2012 season. Geldart has seen the most playing time of the trio as he appeared in 26 games, while McNew has played in 25 games and has made three starts. Last spring, Bosley played in all 17 games with one start. He also scored one goal, handed out an assist, scooped up 10 ground balls and caused eight turnovers. Midfield The middies are arguably the deepest and most talented group on the roster and will lend some offensive firepower this spring. Chris Rios returns for his sophomore season after pacing the team in goals (21) as a freshman. He registered at least one point in 14 games and should be one of the top scorers again this year. Junior Lucas Flaig returns to the lineup after missing last season with an injury. He will miss the beginning of the 2013 campaign due to injury but should return by the start of conference play. In his first season in 2011, Flaig was third on the roster in points (29), behind 24 goals and five assists.

2013 Season Preview The coaching staff has high expectations for sophomore Greg Bourne this season after playing in 13 games and registering eight points as a freshman. He scored five goals with three assists and should improve on those numbers this spring. Junior Zach Douglas has spent his first two years with the Bobcats as a defensive midfielder, however, he will transition to more of a twoway player in 2013. He has appeared in all 34 games over his previous two years and has scored three goals with two assists. He led the team with 69 ground balls a year ago. Junior Andy Luhmann and Phil Hess are two of the most experienced players on the roster and will once again contribute to the success of the midfield. Luhmann has appeared in all 34 games, with five starts, and he has accounted for nine goals and six assists. Hess has made 19 combined starts (33 games) as a freshman and sophomore and he has 17 goals and 18 assists. He was fifth on the team in scoring during his first season in 2011. Sophomore Spencer Barnett will assume a larger role in the midfield this season after playing in 13 games with two starts last season. He picked up 17 ground balls with two goals and one assist. Sophomore Kreigh Kirby and freshman Michael Kibler are both making the transition from attack to midfield this season. Kirby has impressed the coaches during preseason and should compete for more time after appearing in six games last season. Kibler should see significant time as a freshman and will provide depth to the midfield.

RIOS

Attack The Bobcats return valuable talent and depth to the front line will have plenty of options for scoring goals. Sophomore Devin Colegrove started 16 games and led the team in both points (29) and assists (15) in his first season. He has improved his scoring and all-around game during the offseason and throughout the preseason. Juniors Ryan Serio returns after missing much of last season due to injury. His presence on the field will give the Bobcats two of the league’s top scoring threats on the front line. Serio, the 2011 CAC Rookie of the Year, will help draw defenders away from Colegrove and will keep opponents from keying on one player. In 10 games, Serio scored nine goals and had 13 assists. Behind Colegrove and Serio, there will be a stiff competition for the other starting spot and additional playing time. Juniors Ricky Kneebone and Britton Hoover, along with freshmen Spencer Love and Nick Stailey will head the group looking for minutes. Kneebone started nine games with seven goals and one assists last season, while Hoover finished sixth on the roster in scoring (11 pts.). Hoover started the final six games of the season and registered six points during that stretch. Love is a small player (5’6”), but is a pure scorer that has a knack for finding the cage, while Stailey is a very accurate, hard shooter that will provide valuable minutes. Coaching Staff Coach Pearce added a new member to his coaching staff this past fall in two-time All-American Trey Keeley. He was a fouryear letterwinner at Roanoke College and helped the men’s lacrosse program to 60 wins and three appearances in the ODAC and NCAA Tournaments. Keeley will work with the offense and midfielders this spring. Charlie Billingsley and Keith Fischer return for their second year with FSU as Co-Defensive Coordinators. Billingsley is a former defenseman for Ohio State, while Fischer was a defensive player for St. Mary’s. Schedule The coaching staff has set a goal of reaching the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament in 2013 and with seven teams in the league this spring, the Bobcats shouldn’t have any problem. The Bobcats open the season at Catholic (9-6) on Feb. 23 and open their home slate on Feb. 27 when they welcome La Roche (5-12) to Bobcat Stadium. Prior to the league schedule, FSU fill face Lebanon Valley (9-6), Aurora (13-4), Christopher Newport (6-9) and Washington & Jefferson (9-7) among others. Frostburg kicks off CAC play with a home game against defending National Champion Salisbury (23-0) on Mar. 23, before traveling to St. Mary’s (10-6) on Mar. 30. The Bobcats also host both Mary Washington (10-5) and Wesley (2-12) for home CAC contests.
