Coaching Staff Keith Byr nes College: Plattsburgh State

Head Coach Keith Byrnes enters his 12th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2013 and has led the Bobcats to a 110-82-22 overall record. Over the last two seasons, Byrnes has guided the Bobcats to 23 wins, nine ties and two appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. FSU has also posted seven wins and four ties in the Capital Athletic Conference and earned a pair of berths in the CAC Tournament semifinals. In 2011, Byrnes was named the CAC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg to an 11-3-5 overall record and 4-2-2 league slate. Last fall, Byrnes guided Frostburg State to a 10-0-3 start, one of just 11 NCAA Division III schools to open the season undefeated through the first 13 contests. FSU finished 2012 with a 12-3-4 overall record. The 2010 year marked the first for Frostburg as a member of the CAC, one of the nation’s toughest leagues. The Bobcats finished 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the CAC. Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eight-straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The Bobcats posted an overall record of 83-66-10 in Byrnes’ first eight years at the helm. During that stretch, 36 players earned All-AMCC honors and Byrnes was named the league’s coach of the year in 2008. In ‘08, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. In 2007, the Bobcats won six of their final eight games, including a run to the ECAC South Region Championship game. FSU also set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 16-0 defeat of Mt. Aloysius. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the part-time head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of post-season appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years.

In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

Coaching Staff Louis Liberatore College: Belmont Abbey

Assistant Coach Louis Liberatore enters his second year as the goalkeeper coach for both the Frostburg State men’s and women’s soccer programs in the fall of 2013. In his first year, he helped the women’s soccer keepers to 14 wins, 79 saves and a .78 goals against average. On the men’s side, the Bobcat goalies picked up 12 wins, 77 saves and a 1.28 gaa. Liberatore came to Frostburg after a pair of coaching stops. Last year, he served as a volunteer assistant goalkeeper coach for the Belmont Abbey women’s soccer team, assisting with practices and developing goalkeeper training sessions. Liberatore also served as the assistant director of goalkeeping for the Gaston United Soccer Club. He assisted with weekly goalkeeper training and taught the basic skills of goalkeeping to young players ages 9-17. In the summer of both 2010 and 2011, he served as a collegiate staff coach for the SoccerPlus Goalkeeper School.

He coached hundreds of camp attendees in the skills of goalkeeping and was responsible for camper evaluations. Liberatore graduated from Belmont Abbey College in January 2012 with dual bachelor’s degrees in sport management and psychology. He was a Dean’s List student, Honor Institute Member, Chi Alpha Sigma (National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society) and Delta Epsilon Sigma (Scholastic Honor Society). He was five-year member of the varsity soccer team at Belmont Abbey. He was an All-Conference Carolinas Third Team selection and was a two-time Academic All-Conference Carolinas honoree. He was voted team captain during his final two years with the program. Liberatore is currently pursuing his MBA at Frostburg State University.

Kevin McCarthy College: Hobart

Assistant Coach Kevin McCarthy enters his first season as a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State University men’s soccer team in 2013. McCarthy arrived at FSU after several coaching stints at the collegiate level. Last year, McCarthy served as the men’s and women’s assistant coach at Ave Maria University. Prior to his stop in south Florida, he was an assistant coach at Manhattanville College from 2011-12. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, helping with team academics and assisted in event management. The Valiants finished 15-4-1 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. McCarthy received his first collegiate assistant position at William Smith College in the spring of 2011. He designed and assisted with training sessions for the women’s soccer team.

2

While at Ave Maria, McCarthy also served as the head coach of the Florida Fire Juniors, an under 11 boys soccer team. A May ’11 graduate of Hobart College, McCarthy served as team captain and led the Statesmen to a 52-15-12 overall record with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and garnered All-Liberty League Second Team honors as a senior in 2010. In 2013, McCarthy played for and served as team captain of the Cape Coral Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). McCarthy received his NSCAA National Diploma in January 2012 and is pursuing his MBA at Frostburg State.

2013 Season Preview Having a roster with seniors and upperclassmen is often crucial to the success of any collegiate athletic team at any level. However, to note that the 2013 Frostburg State University men’s soccer roster contains veteran leadership would be a serious understatement. The Bobcats boast 14 seniors this fall, arguably one of the largest senior classes in the 72-year history of the men’s soccer program. FSU also returns six starters and three of its top five scorers, including a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region selection. “Our 14 seniors have a great deal of experience, but we as a coaching staff will be asking them to fill roles and play at positions that they haven’t in the past,” stated 12th year head coach Keith Byrnes. “We are also waiting on and expecting our freshman and underclassman to step up and fill some of those same roles.” With nearly half of the 29-man roster comprised of seniors, most would think that Byrnes and his staff don’t have many hurdles as the team heads into the fall season. But, FSU will have to replace 10 players, a pair of two-year captains, its top two scorers from a year ago and the two-time Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

[ JONES ]

Defense Despite a roster that features 14 seniors, the strength of the 2013 version of Frostburg will lie within the defense. The Bobcats posted five shutouts a season ago, allowed more than one goal in a contest just five times and return three of four starters from last year’s roster. The senior threesome of Chris Jones, Jared Fohs and Bernard Fatusin return for their final seasons with three of the four starting spots locked up. Jones, however, will be the heart and soul of the team as the players feed off of his energy and play on the field. A team captain and 2012 NSCAA All-Region honoree, Jones has started all but one game over the last two seasons and is one of the team’s most versatile players. He started 18 games last fall and helped the Bobcats to a 1.28 goals against average. Offensively, Jones was fourth on the team in scoring behind four goals and one assist. Fohs enters his third and final season with Frostburg after starting 17 of 18 games a year ago. As a junior, Fohs contributed one goal and two assists on the offensive end, while playing a major role in FSU’s 1.28 gaa. Fatusin appeared in 14 games and made 13 starts a year ago and will play a larger role within the defense this season. Right back, the fourth and final defensive position on Byrnes’ club, is up for grabs and will be handled by committee through the preseason. Seniors Phil Nana, Jason Bennett and junior Brian Lentine will all be competing for the final defensive spot. Nana appeared in nine games and made three starts last fall, while Bennett has played in 39 games and made 12 starts during his previous three years as a Bobcat. Lentine has played in 15 games over the last two seasons and is the only junior on this year’s roster. Forwards It’s hard to imagine that losing the two-time CAC Player of the Year wouldn’t significantly hurt the offensive production from the Bobcat front line this fall. However, Byrnes and staff are confident in the returning stable of players that helped contribute to one of the most potent scoring lines in the region last season. Without question, the forward position this fall will be led by senior Pablo Torrano. Despite battling injuries, he finished third on the team in scoring (11 pts.) behind five goals and one assist. Torrano, a team captain, will have some pretty big shoes to fill as the coaching staff is expecting him to help fill the void left by two-time CAC Player of the Year Ryan Russell and two-time captain Shawn Baker. A group of senior reserves and solid freshmen provide a good mix of speed and technical ability and will be competing for time up front. Senior Raphael Adjeoda appeared in 11 games a year ago, while junior Joe Clarke returns to the team after scoring two goals as a freshman in 2011. Senior Michael Norman appeared in 19 games with one start as a junior and registered five points (2 goals, one assist). He has battled an injury through much of preseason, but should be ready to go for the regular season.

2013 Season Preview Midfield While the Bobcat defense can be viewed as the “strength” of this year’s team, the midfield returns its fair share of talent and depth. Four returning players, including a pair of starters, appeared in a combined 60 games last season with over 30 starts. Leading the charge will be senior captain Alex Brainard after appearing in 41 games with one start over his three previous seasons. Last fall, he scored two goals and handed out one assist. Senior Bryan Whitmore has the most experience of any midfielder and he has provided stability to the position since arriving on campus. As a junior, he started 16 of 18 games and finished fifth on the roster with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist). He enters his season with an injury that will cause him to miss a few games, however, Whitmore has played in 50 games over his three seasons with 34 starts. Sophomores Kyle Walczak and Andrew Adami make up the final two members of the returning foursome. Walczak started 15 of 16 games last season with an assist against Hood, while Adami played in eight games with one start and added an assist against Marymount.

[ TO R R A N O ]

Goalkeeper The biggest question on this year’s Bobcat men’s soccer team lies with the goalkeepers. Gone is two-year captain and 22-game winner Abiye Jack. Byrnes described his keeper situation as a young, preseason battle with a pair of freshmen fighting for playing time with senior Drew Hock. Hock contains the only game experience at the collegiate level on the team. Last fall, he earned a win, played all 90 minutes and made five saves in a 3-1 win over Goucher. He will be pushed by newcomers Jackson Bicknell and Hassan Mostafa. Freshmen With 14 seniors on a 29-man roster, it’s hard to make a case for having a young team. However, Byrnes and his staff also point out that they brought in 11 freshmen to help replace the loss of 10 players after the 2012 campaign. Of those 11 newcomers, Byrnes pointed to five that are likely to have the most impact on the team this fall. With the loss of both Russell and Baker, who combined to score 60 points last season, a trio of freshmen add speed, depth and solid technical ability to a front line that is lacking in both numbers and returning scorers. Nabayee Tesfu and Jonathan Lippitt were Maryland All-State selections as seniors in high school, while Jonah Mohre was a League All-Star as a senior. Chris Herbert will contribute minutes to the midfield in his first year as a Bobcat. He adds solid depth to the position and provides a defensive attitude. He was a three-time All-Carroll County honoree at Century High school. Andrew Klotz rounds out the group, but will push the back line for playing time from the very start of preseason. He adds valuable depth to a defensive unit that contains five players in their first seasons with the team. Schedule For the fourth-straight year, the Frostburg State men’s soccer team will open its fall season with the annual FSU Tournament at Bobcat Stadium. The Bobcats play host to Pitt-Greensburg (11-6-1) and Grove City (8-9-2) and have captured the last two tournament titles. However, the schedule gets much tougher as the season moves along for the Bobcats. Once in Capital Athletic Conference action, FSU will face a pair of 2012 NCAA Tournament teams in Christopher Newport (15-4-2) and York (18-24). Frostburg will also square off against annually tough Salisbury (9-7-2) and Mary Washington (12-8-1). The Bobcats will be fighting for a trip to the CAC Tournament for the third-straight season that opens with the first round on Saturday, November 2.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
