Coaching Staff Dale Luy College: Gettysburg

Head Coach Dale Luy begins his fourth year as the head coach of the Frostburg State University men’s and women’s cross country teams in 2013. Last fall, Luy guided the Frostburg men’s and women’s cross country teams to fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively, at the CAC Championships. Both Gavin Caupp and Pat Mead earned Second Team All-CAC honors after finishing 14th and 15th at the league championships. The FSU men capped the season with a 43rd-place showing at the NCAA Mideast Regional. For the second-straight season, the Bobcat women grabbed sixth place at the CAC Championships. Two weeks later, Frostburg posted 44th at the NCAA Mideast Regional. In 2011, both the Bobcat men’s and women’s teams highlighted their seasons with a pair of sixth-place finishes at the CAC Championships. On the men’s side, the Bobcats earned a pair of sixth-place finishes on the year. In an early season test at the future site of the CAC Championships, the Bobcats captured sixth at the Coach Achtzehn Classic at York (Pa.). Five weeks later, the Bobcats repeated with sixth place at the conference championship meet. Five runners capped the season by competing at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Like the men, the FSU women captured a pair of sixthplace finishes on the season. They captured sixth at the Shippensburg Univ. Alumni Open that kicked off the fall season. The Bobcats capped the year with another sixth-place showing, this time at the CAC Championships. Under wintery conditions, senior Anne Patron captured runner-up honors and was named to the All-CAC team. A week after the CAC’s, four runners represented Frostburg at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Luy guided the Bobcats to a successful first year in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2010. The Bobcat women's team captured fourth at the league championships while Anne Patron and Jessica O'Neil went on to earn All-CAC honors and represent FSU at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet. On the men's side, the Bobcats grabbed a pair of top10 finishes during the season before finishing sixth at the CAC Championships. Frostburg capped the season with a 36th-place showing at the NCAA Regional meet. Luy brought a combined 19 years of experience coaching cross country to FSU. He served as the head coach at both Elizabethtown College for 12 years and Lower Dauphin High

School for seven. His Elizabethtown teams set school records for wins in a season while his women's team twice earned Middle Atlantic Conference runner-up honors. Individually, Luy's runners have earned Division III Mideast All-Region honors as well as a prestigious Rhodes Scholar recipient. At Lower Dauphin, his teams won two MidPenn Divisional Championships and the MidPenn class-AAA Championship Luy is no stranger to FSU athletics as he has served as the school’s head track & field coach for the last six years. Coach Luy has accomplished a great deal in just six short years. He has guided three of his student-athletes to All-American status, led the women’s team to a ninth place finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships and a first place showing at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships that same year. During the 2011-12 indoor season, Luy was named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Coach of the Year after the guiding the Bobcats to a runner-up showing at the league championships. Luy, who brought over 30 years of coaching experience to FSU spanning both the high school and collegiate levels, came to Frostburg having spent three years as an assistant coach at Gettysburg College. While with the Bullets, he worked with the throwing events and pole vault. He had one NCAA Div. III provisional qualifier (men’s discus), two Centennial Conference women’s discus champions, one conference women’s pole vault champion and one conference men’s javelin champion. His athletes also set six school records and 16 all-time top ten performances. Before Gettysburg, Luy served as the head track & field coach for six years at Elizabethtown Area High School. He had 14 PIAA District III qualifiers, two state qualifiers and set two school records. He directed the renovation and new placement of the track and field facilities working with engineers, architects and district officials. Luy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Gettysburg in 1978, Masters of Education in Teaching and Curriculum from Penn State - Harrisburg in 1991 and his Doctor in Sports Management from the United State Sports Academy in 2007. While at Gettysburg, Luy was a four-year letterwinner for the track and field teams taking home NCAA All-American honors in 1976 as a member of the 440-yard relay team and 1977 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Assistant Coach Kendall Luy enters her second year as an assistant coach for the Frostburg State University cross country programs. She also serves as the track & field programs’ top assistant and has worked with the throwers since 2009. Last season, Luy helped the Frostburg men’s and women’s cross country teams to fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively, at the CAC Championships. The Bobcat men’s and women’s teams also finished 43rd and 44th at the NCAA Mideast Regionals. Both Gavin Caupp and Pat Meade earned Second Team All-CAC honors following a pair of top-20 finishes. During the 2012-13 track & field seasons, Luy played an important role in the success of both the men’s and women’s teams. Both squads finished fourth during the CAC Indoor Championships, while the men captured third and the women fifth during the spring outdoor championships. Six Bobcats earned All-CAC honors, led by Trey Davis, who was named to the first team after winning the hammer throw at the outdoor championships. Luy arrived at FSU after a four-year athletic career with the Susquehanna track & field program. While there, she participated in the javelin, shot put, sprints, and relays. Season Preview The Frostburg State University men's and women's cross country teams come into 2013 hoping to improve upon last season, when they finished fifth and sixth at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, respectively. Dale Luy, in his fourth year as head coach at FSU, believes that overall each team has the ability to be better than last year. "On both squads, we are incredibly young and inexperienced," said Luy. "The question is how much can we progress during the year." With a strong core of returners, and a large infusion of youth, coach Luy believes that both the men's and women's cross country teams have the potential for improvement. On the men's side, Pat Mead will be the lone senior on the team and is coming off a junior season in which he earned Second Team All-CAC honors. Coach Luy believes that Mead will once again bear "strong consideration for being All-CAC." Mead finished in 15th place at the 2012 CAC Championships with a time of 28:36.54, and in doing so

[ Mea d ]

made a huge jump from his 67th place finish in 2011. Mead will look to make another big jump in his final season. Aside from Mead, the other top returners for the men's team are junior Jon Stewart, as well as sophomores Greg Horning, Jeremy Brown, and Daniil Repchenko. These four are all returning for only their second season, and after putting in a good summer of training will be looking to improve on their times from last season. With eight returners, all in their second season other than Mead, as well as six freshmen Coach Luy knows there is going to be a lot of competition within the team. Luy stated, "After Pat Mead we will probably have another nine people who will take turns in where they place." Not only will the returners be fighting for those places, but the incoming freshmen class will look to make an immediate impact. During their preseason camp, Brandon Redmond, Jeffrey Frost, Colin Quinn, Xavier Alvarez, and Stanton Higham have all stood out among the newcomers. Luy honestly believes that some of the newcomers could get ahead of the returners, but the biggest obstacle

[ Ste wa r t ]

for them will be how quickly they can adapt to the 8k distance. One of the keys to the team's success, according to Luy, will be how well the returners can help the freshmen with their pace. Although talented, the newcomers have been going out very fast in camp, and will need to learn from the returners how to pace themselves over the longer distance in college. The men's cross country team has a great mix of talented returners and freshmen with high potential, and they look poised to have a

Season Preview successful season. The women's cross country team will also be looking to improve upon last season, as they earned a sixth place finish at the CAC Championships in 2012. Coach Luy will only have two returners from last season in junior Bryn Allston and sophomore Erika Watson. He will be without Gabbi Maher and his top CAC finisher from 2012 in Jen Bower, as Maher is studying abroad and Bower has been lost to injury. In her third year on the team, Allston will bring a veteran presence to the team and will be looked upon to fill the leadership void that is missing from last season. She finished in 61st place at the 2012 CAC Championships with a time of 29:19.07, and will be looking to improve on that time this season. Watson, going into her second season, finished 86th at last season's CACs with a time of 41:33.74, and is also looking to improve upon her finish from last season.

[ A ll s t o n ]

Despite only having the two returners, coach Luy is very excited about the team and believes they have an excellent chance to improve upon last season. He is confident that the incoming class of freshmen will be able to have an immediate impact, and will need to in order for the women to have a successful season. Of Luy's top four runners, other than Allston, the other three are all running cross country for the first time. The freshmen trio of Casey Columbus, Lexi Foreman, and Valarie Proctor join Allston to make up what promises to be an exciting core for the women's team. "If we can keep them healthy, we will definitely improve over last year," said coach Luy. Both the men's and women's teams will face stiff competition in the CAC, and that will only be made tougher with the addition of Christopher Newport to the conference. "As always, we have a very tough schedule," said Luy. That tough schedule starts immediately as the Bobcat men's and women's teams open their schedule on September 6 at the Galen

[ Wat s o n ]

Piper XC Challenge at Shippensburg University. They will be facing a Shippensburg team that has been a top 25 Division II team over the last five years, as well as Elizabethtown and Kutztown, with all three teams historically being regionally and nationally ranked schools. Even with the tough schedule and inexperience of his teams, coach Luy feels confident that both of his teams will be able to make strides and improve on their past performances.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

2013 Cross Country Media Guide

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
