Head Coach Carly Sweeney College: Keene State ‘04
Head Coach Carly Sweeney enters her fourth season at the helm of the Frostburg State University field hockey program in 2014. Over the last three seasons, Sweeney has steered the Bobcats to 19 wins and has turned a program around that saw just three wins in the 2010 season, prior to her arrival in 2011. Last fall, Sweeney guided Frostburg to a 7-13 season. FSU led the league in shot on goal percentage (71%) while finishing second in the league in defensive saves (30), for the second-straight year. Academically, five Bobcats were named to the 2013 NFCHA Division III National Academic Squad, while two were honored as NCAA Division III Scholars of Distinction. In 2012, Sweeney led the Bobcats to the CAC Tournament behind a 7-14 overall record. Frostburg finished 5-4 at Bobcat Stadium, including the FSU Tournament championship in early September. The Bobcats again led the league in saves (247), finished second in defensive saves (27) and fourth in scoring (44 goals). In 2011, FSU finished 5-15 overall and 1-5 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Despite the record, the Bobcats showed signs of improvement throughout the season, posting shutout wins over Sweet Briar (9-0), Shenandoah (4-0) and St. Vincent (6-0). The Bobcats led the league in saves (312) and save percentage (80%), finished fifth in scoring (42) and fourth in defensive saves (15). Sweeney, the program’s 14th coach, came to Frostburg after serving as the head field hockey coach at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, Ca. since 2009. She led the Mavericks to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Playoff Quarterfinals in each season while guiding her 2010 team to a 19-8 record and the Serra Tournament Championship. Prior to La Costa, Sweeney was
the top assistant coach at NCAA Division III Keene State College in Keene, N.H. During her four years (2005-09) with the program, she helped guide the team to a 68-26 overall record with four NCAA Tournament appearances and four Little East Conference (LEC) Titles. Sweeney graduated from Keene State in 2004 with her bachelor’s degree of arts in film. She was a four-year recipient of the Talent Scholarship for Film (2000-04) and won the Lefty Lablanc Award for Academic and Athletic Achievement in 2000. She also enjoyed a four-year playing career for the Owl field hockey team. She helped the squad to a 61-31 overall record and a 34-6 record in the LEC. In her final season, she led the team to a 19-6 overall slate, a perfect 10-0 LEC record and an ECAC Tournament Championship. She was awarded All-West Regional Field Hockey Honors and was named to the All-LEC team in 2004. Sweeney is a Site Director for the USA Field Hockey Futures Program and was a videographer and editor for APEX Field Hockey.

managing travel for the team to showcases and tournaments while arranging accommodations, dinners and team activities. She introduced the rules of the game while teaching the correct form of basic skills and ideas to new and inexperienced players. She also had coaching stints at Revolution Field Hockey Youth Camp and at the Montclair High School Training Clinic. As a student-athlete, Tafro was a four-year member of the Montclair State University field hockey team from 2010-2013 leading the team to two NJAC Championships and a national runner-up finish in Division III in 2012. She was a three-time First Team All-NJAC selection, two-time NFHCA Division III South Atlantic First Team All-Region, two-time Snyapse Sports All-American and was named an NFHCA Division III Second Team All-American following her junior season. As a junior and senior she led Montclair in scoring, was named the NJAC Midfielder of the Year following her senior season and earned a spot in the NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Game. Tafro is also second all-time in MSU history in scoring. She was a four-time NFHCA Division III Academic squad selection and helped the Red Hawks earn the NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team Award three times. Tafro graduated from Montclair in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in justice studies with a double concentration in justice systems and international justice.

2014 Season Preview Frostburg State University field hockey coach Carly Sweeney returns for her fourth year at the helm and continues to implement her plans for rebuilding the program. The 2014 version of the Bobcat field hockey team has some keys returners and new talent to continue that upward trend. “This is the first season where I recruited all the players on the roster and that has really helped with our team cohesion,” said Sweeney. “Everyone is on the same page this preseason and the players know the expectations of the coaching staff.” “Because the players know and understand my expectations, the team has progressed further and faster than in my previous three preseasons.” With the progress made thus far in the preseason, coupled with the returning talent up and down the roster, Sweeney is very optimistic about the 2014 season.

“We have strong, talented players returning to this year’s team, but our class of newcomers also possess talent,” said Sweeney. “We have our entire forward line back as that group will consist of all veteran players.” Frostburg returns three key starters and four of its top five scorers from a year ago that accounted for a combined 61 points. The firepower up front will be crucial if FSU is to push for a Capital Athletic Conference Championship. “Last year we missed the CAC Tournament because of a coin flip to determine the final few spots. This year, we are determined not to let a coin flip decide our postseason. I fully expect us to be more competitive in the CAC this fall,” noted Sweeney. The junior tandem of Jackie Best and Alexandra Darrow re-

2014 Season Preview emerge as one of the top scoring duos in the CAC. Together, they started all but one game and accounted for 38 points a year ago as sophomores. Best started all 20 games and is the squad’s leading returning scoring behind 21 points. She finished second with eight goals, five assists and 68 shots. In her first year with Frostburg, Darrow was third in scoring with 17 points behind seven goals and three assists. Junior Ashley Johnson started 16 games last fall and totaled 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists) from her midfield position. This fall, coach Sweeney has asked Johnson to switch to defense and provide veteran leadership to the group following the loss

of three starters from a year ago. “Ashley is a very strong and intelligent player overall,” said Sweeney. “I moved her to defense because she has the stick skills to get the ball out of the backfield and she can take command of the defensive line.” Courtney Abell is this season’s only senior and returns after finishing fifth on the roster in scoring last fall. She scored five goals, four of them coming over the final two games, and should see significant time this fall on the front line.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
