Head Coach Tommy Pearce was chosen to start the new era of men’s lacrosse for Frostburg State University in the early summer of 2009. This spring, he enters his fourth season with an overall record of 21-33. Pearce and the Bobcats saw vast improvements last spring, finishing the season with a 13-7 overall record. FSU capped the year with an appearance in the ECAC South Region Tournament Championship game after posting wins over DeSales (14-6) and Centenary (24-15) in the first two rounds. In the CAC, Frostburg posted an even 3-3 mark and earned a spot in the CAC Tournament for the first time. For his efforts, Pearce was named the CAC’s Coach of the Year while Spenser Love was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Year. It is the second such honor for a player during Pearce’s three years. In his second season in 2012, the Bobcats posted wins over Shenandoah (14-6) and Washington & Jefferson (8-6) and suffered six losses by four goals or less. The Bobcats finished fourth in the CAC in groundballs (637), fifth in caused turnovers (144) and seventh in both goals (113) and assists (64). In the program’s first year in 2011, Frostburg finished 6-11 overall and 1-7 in the league. The Bobcats had two players finish in the top-10 in the league in scoring while Ryan Serio was named the CAC Rookie of the Year. Frostburg opened the season with a 10-3 win over Shenandoah and finished with wins over Neumann (209), St. Joseph’s (19-3), Susquehanna (10-9), Marymount (11-8) and Washington & Jefferson (12-6). Pearce came to Frostburg State University from Gettysburg College where he served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team for four seasons (2006-09). A native of Chestertown, Md., Pearce helped Gettysburg to an incredible run during his time with the Bullets. The team won the Centennial Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of those four seasons, including a national runner-up finish in 2009. Gettysburg collected an overall record of 66-12 and was consistently ranked in the top-10 in the nation, including a No. 5 ranking at the conclusion of his final season. Pearce, who earned the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association 2008 Division III Outstanding Assistant Coach award, helped recruit and coach 20 All-Americans while at Gettysburg, including six in 2009. Success at Gettysburg came not only as a coach for Pearce, but also as a player. He was a two-time

All-American, garnering First Team honors in 2001 as well as being named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Player of the Year. He helped the Bullets to four-straight conference titles and the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III national championship game. Pearce graduated from Gettysburg in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in English and received his master’s degree from McDaniel College in 2008 in physical education and athletic administration.

Last spring, Keeley helped the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record, including appearances in the CAC Tournament and the ECAC South Region Tournament Championship. Keeley helped the Bobcats to the nation’s ninth-best man-up offense (.390), while four players were selected to the All-CAC teams. 2014 Season Preview For the first time since restarting the varsity men’s lacrosse team four years ago, Frostburg State head coach and reigning Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Tommy Pearce has a healthy senior class as 17 players will be suiting up for the Bobcats for their final season. FSU also boasts a 47-man roster with depth, and plenty of it. “We have talent all over the field and more depth than I have had before,” said Pearce. “The hardest part about our depth is not just who to play, but how many. It is a very nice luxury to have. We are more competitive at practice this preseason now that I have four complete recruiting classes competing for time.” It would be hard to argue with Pearce about his team’s depth as the Bobcats return four All-CAC selections from a year ago, two CAC Rookies of the Year (2011 & 2013) and nine starters. FSU also returns 26 players that accounted for 380 of the team’s 381 points scored last spring. Couple that with the return of the team’s starting faceoff specialist, goalkeeper and two defensive stalwarts and Frostburg State looks to be in prime position to exceed last season’s 13-7 overall record and ECAC South Region Championship runnerup finish. The Bobcats’ depth and talent will also help with a brutal CAC slate, as the league opens the 2014 season with two teams ranked inside the top-20, Salisbury (5th) and St. Mary’s (18th), according to Lacrosse Magazine. Attack Headlining a potent attack will be the return of three of the CAC’s top-10 scorers from a year ago. As a team, FSU led the CAC and finished 19th in the nation in man-up offense (.390) and third in the league and 50th in the country in scoring offense (11.70). The trio of top scorers combined for a total of 180 points, more than any other threesome in the CAC last season, and contains two of the last three CAC Rookies of the Year. The reigning CAC Rookie of the Year Spenser Love returns for his second season with the Bobcats after pacing the squad and finishing second in the conference with 61 points. Love, who registered at least one point in 18 of 20 games, finished third in the league in goals (41) and eighth in assists (20). Junior Devin Colegrove tied for third in the CAC with 60 points behind 27 goals and 33 assists, the league’s third highest total. Colegrove, one of three team captains, led Frostburg in scoring in 2012 with 29 points and enters his third year with 41 goals and 48 assists. The most experienced member of the scoring trio is Ryan Serio, who returns for his senior season, and is the most decorated member of the Bobcat team. The 2011 CAC Rookie of the Year and 2013 Second Team All-CAC honoree, Serio finished fifth in the league in scoring (59 pts.) last spring despite missing three games and only making 13 starts. He enters his final spring with 75 goals and 57 assists in his career. Sophomore Nick Stailey was a pleasant surprise for the coaching staff in his first year, finishing fifth on the roster in both points (24) and goals (17). Stailey tied Love for the team lead with 10 man-up goals. Senior Ricky Kneebone and sophomore Michael Kibler will both provide depth to the attack. Kneebone has appeared in 42 career games with 13 goals and three assists, while Kibler will make the transition from the midfield. Last season, he played in 13 games and registered four goals and one assist. Midfield With the return of talent, depth and scoring at attack, Pearce is confident that his team will find the net and find it often. However, he also knows that his midfield is just as deep and might get slightly overlooked because of the front line. “Our midfield could be as deep as 10 players and we could very easily rotate that many guys throughout the season,” noted Pearce. “Our midfield is easily as talented as our attack.” While the attack features three of the league’s top-10 scorers from a year ago, the midfield contains the CAC’s 11th leading scorer and four seniors. Versatile junior Chris Rios was the squad’s leading scoring midfielder as he finished 11th in the league with 44 points a year ago. He found the net 20 times, but was second on the team and fourth in the CAC with 24 assists. As a freshman in 2011, Rios led the Bobcats with 21 goals. Following a great spring in 2013 and another solid fall season, junior Greg Bourne will see an increased role this year for the Bobcats. He appeared in all 20 games and totaled 11 goals and nine assists, while finishing seventh on the roster with 20 points. Like Bourne, junior Spencer Barnett could see a larger impact on the lineup this season after appearing in all 20 games with 10 goals and four assists as a sophomore. The senior duo of Devon Stailey and Lucas Flaig both got a late start to their junior seasons following early injuries that limited their playing time. Stailey was second among the midfielders in scoring with 17 points (14 goals/3 assists) despite missing the first four games. Flaig has battled injuries heading into his last two years, but is healthy for the start of his senior campaign. He totaled nine points (7 goals/2 assists) in just eight games as a junior. Seniors Andy Luhmann and Zach Douglas are valuable two-way midfielders and two of the group’s four seniors. Luhmann has appeared in 51 games over his first three years and has accounted for 17 goals and 12 assists. Meanwhile, Douglas has played in 54 games and has scored six goals with six assists. He led the Bobcats in ground balls (69) as a sophomore and

2014 Season Preview finished fifth in caused turnovers (11). Senior Phil Hess has been one of the team’s most consistent players over the past three seasons. Hess has played in 53 games while making 19 starts over his career with 23 goals and 23 assists. Hess will join junior Kreigh Kirby as valuable second-line contributors. Kirby totaled 11 points in 17 games as a sophomore. Sophomore Tate Rolland could very easily play himself into the midfield once he adjusts to Pearce’s style of play. Rolland appeared in 17 games with five goals and seven assists as a freshman at Ohio Wesleyan University last spring. Defense While most of the focus will be on the offensive production, the defense quietly boasts some of the top returners in the league, including a pair of All-CAC performers. The Bobcats finished third in the CAC and 71st in the country in scoring defense (8.85). Headlining the group will be the return of junior captains and All-CAC Second Team selections Paul Newman and Zach Burkhardt. The duo combined to scoop up 76 ground balls, while Burkhardt led the league and finished 13th in the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.5). Senior Kevin Kinney will move into the starting role this season following the graduation of Jeff Nagle last spring. Kinney started six games and saw action in 15 contests a year ago. With the experience of 42 contests under his belt, the coaching staff feels confident in Kinney’s ability to transition into the starting role. Last year, he picked up 19 ground balls, caused 13 turnovers and won 5-of-8 faceoffs. Junior Andrew Richardson will play his way into the defensive rotation this season. He has appeared in eight games over his first two years, but will see a larger role this spring. Long-Stick Midfield A trio of seniors will fill out the long-stick midfield this spring, led by the return of Second Team All-CAC honoree Korey Bosley. He appeared in 20 games and made six starts last spring for the Bobcats, handing out one assist and adding 29 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers. Junior Zach Burkhardt Seniors Jake McNew and Branden Geldart will see time behind Bosley. McNew scored one goal and collected 20 ground balls in 18 games (2 starts), while Geldart scored once and picked up 26 ground balls in 20 games (11 starts). Freshman Chris Santina will challenge for time after garnering All-League honors as a senior at Kellenberg Memorial in Franklin Square, N.Y. Faceoff For the fourth and final year, Billy Lark will be Frostburg’s top faceoff specialist. The senior has been the primary starter since his arrival at FSU, as he has handled nearly 70 percent of all faceoffs over his first three seasons. Last spring, Lark won 235of-389 attempts (60.4%) and led the team with 90 ground balls. Sophomore Erik Geiser will serve in a reserve role and will also be a defensive midfielder for the Bobcats. He appeared in 16 games, won 24-of-54 (44%) faceoffs and picked up 31 ground balls in his first season. Goalkeeper Much like faceoff, the starting goalkeeper position will be held by a senior as the team heads into its opener. Tyler Haines returns for his third year as the starter after missing a significant portion of his sophomore season due to injury. Last spring, Haines rebounded to lead the CAC in saves (243) and finished second in saves per game (12.15) and wins (13). He enters his final year with 510 career saves. A trio of sophomores will challenge Haines for time in the cage and all three saw action last spring. Taylor Schmitz stopped three shots in five games, Mack Schwarz appeared in four games and made eight saves, while Tom Kraemer totaled one save in three games. Schedule Pearce and his coaching staff are pleased with the team’s 13-7 overall record from a year ago, but the ECAC South Region Finalists want to continue to improve in 2014 despite a tough schedule that features four NCAA Tournament and two ECAC Tournament participants. The Bobcats kickoff the season with four of their first five games at home. Both DeSales (8-9) and Lebanon Valley (12-7) are in that group and both squads advanced to the ECAC Tournament. Frostburg starts its toughest stretch of the season with the second road game of the campaign at ninth-ranked Washington College (13-5) on Mar. 8. Seven days later, the Bobcats open their CAC schedule at fifth-ranked Salisbury (17-6) before capping the month of March with a trip to Christopher Newport (8-9). FSU closes out its regular season with a home game against 18th-ranked and reining CAC Champion St. Mary’s (12-7). All four teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament last spring.
