Coaching Staff Keith Byr nes College: Plattsburgh State

Head Coach Keith Byrnes enters his 13th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2014 and has led the Bobcats to a 123-89-22 overall record. Over the last three seasons, Byrnes has guided the Bobcats to 26 wins, nine ties and three appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. FSU has posted 11 wins and four ties in the Capital Athletic Conference and has earned three-consecutive berths in the CAC Tournament semifinals. In 2011, Byrnes was named the CAC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg to an 11-3-5 overall record and 4-2-2 league slate. Last fall, the Bobcats played to a 13-7 overall mark behind a perfect 9-0 record at home. FSU posted six shutouts, including five at home and won the FSU Tournament Championship for the third-straight year. Byrnes’ team finished third in the CAC in scoring (2.0 gpg), fourth in goals (40) and fifth in assists (26). In 2012, Byrnes guided Frostburg State to a 10-0-3 start, one of just 11 NCAA Division III schools to open the season undefeated through the first 13 contests. FSU finished 2012 with a 12-3-4 overall record. The 2010 year marked the first for Frostburg as a member of the CAC, one of the nation’s toughest leagues. The Bobcats finished 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the CAC. Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eight-straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The Bobcats posted an overall record of 83-66-10 in Byrnes’ first eight years at the helm. During that stretch, 36 players earned All-AMCC honors and Byrnes was named the league’s coach of the year in 2008. In ‘08, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. In 2007, the Bobcats won six of their final eight games, including a run to the ECAC South Region Championship game. FSU also set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 16-0 defeat of Mt. Aloysius.

Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the part-time head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of post-season appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

Coaching Staff Kevin McCarthy College: Hobart

Assistant Coach Kevin McCarthy enters his second season as a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State University men’s soccer team in 2014. Last fall, McCarthy helped lead the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record that included a perfect 9-0 record at home. Frostburg advanced to the CAC Tournament semifinals and won the FSU Tournament, both for the third-straight season. McCarthy arrived at FSU after several coaching stints at the collegiate level. Last year, McCarthy served as the men’s and women’s assistant coach at Ave Maria University. Prior to his stop in south Florida, he was an assistant coach at Manhattanville College from 2011-12. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, helping with team academics and assisted in event management. The Valiants finished 15-4-1 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

McCarthy received his first collegiate assistant position at William Smith College in the spring of 2011. He designed and assisted with training sessions for the women’s soccer team. While at Ave Maria, McCarthy also served as the head coach of the Florida Fire Juniors, an under 11 boys soccer team. A May ’11 graduate of Hobart College, McCarthy served as team captain and led the Statesmen to a 52-15-12 overall record with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and garnered All-Liberty League Second Team honors as a senior in 2010. In 2013, McCarthy played for and served as team captain of the Cape Coral Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). McCarthy received his NSCAA National Diploma in January 2012 and is pursuing his MBA at Frostburg State.

2014 Season Preview The graduation of 13 seniors and the loss of 17 total players from one year to the next would normally signal a rebuilding year. However, that is not the case for 13th year head coach Keith Byrnes and he believes his 2014 Frostburg State men’s soccer team will still be able to compete with anyone in the Capital Athletic Conference. “Our goal is to finish in the top-six in the league and earn a spot in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament,” mentioned Byrnes. That goal does come with some challenges for Byrnes as he welcomes back just four upperclassmen from the 2013 season. “We have a long way to go with the lineup because of the number of young players we have on the team,” added Byrnes. “As the year progresses, I feel we will be in a

[ C LA R K E ]

position to compete with anyone in the conference.” Unlike a year ago when the Bobcats featured 14 seniors, this year’s roster boasts 16 freshmen and sophomores and a handful of juniors that are appearing on the roster for the first time. “We are looking at this season as a fresh start because of the number of new players and it has allowed us to implement a new style of play,” said Byrnes. “We will be a possession oriented team that will play to our strengths, which will be our technical ability and our combination play.” “Last year, we played a different style with our bigger and faster strikers,” mentioned Byrnes. “Our returning players this season have done a nice job early on in promoting the new changes. They have taken the team on their shoulders and have helped the younger guys buy into those changes.” Leading the charge for the Bobcats will be the return of seniors Joe Clarke, Bryan Lentine and Bryan Whitmore,

along with junior Mitchell Muise. “The four have really stepped up and become vocal leaders

2014 Season Preview on the team,” said Byrnes. “They have been very positive and provided a great base in which to build from.” Clarke made four starts and played in 16 games as a junior in the midfield. He is the team’s returning scoring leader from a year ago after finding the net twice and handing out one assist. This fall, he will switch to the defense and will join Muise in providing a solid back line. Muise returns as the Bobcats’ top defender. He appeared in eight games last fall and helped the Frostburg defensive unit post a 1.34 goals against average with seven shutouts. Lentine, a midfielder, saw the most action of the group, appearing in all 20 games while making 10 starts. Lentine scored one goal and should take on a larger role this season. Whitmore missed the 2013 season due to injury, but has returned to the lineup at full strength. As a junior in 2012, he started 16 games and finished fifth on the team in scoring behind three goals and one assist. Sophomore Hassan Mostafa returns as the team’s starting goalkeeper after appearing in 15 games as a freshman. He finished with eight wins and made 39 saves. Sophomore Chris Herbert started 15 of 18 games in the midfield a year ago and should again earn a starting spot. The coaches like his energy in the midfield and he should

[ LENTINE ]

improve on his numbers (3 goals) in his second year.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
