Coaching Staff B e c ky Fl e t c h e r College: Washington & Jefferson

Head Coach Rebecca Fletcher enters her fourth year as the head volleyball coach at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2014. Fletcher’s 2013 Bobcat squad finished with seven wins and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the third-straight year. FSU snagged three big conference wins for a sixth-place finish in the CAC, while finishing sixth in the conference in blocks (157) and service aces (211). In 2012, the Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC regular-season standings and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the second-consecutive year. Frostburg, which posted five wins on the season, finished fifth in the league in assists (919), kills (1,003), blocks (246) and digs (1,651). In her first year at the helm, Fletcher led the Bobcats to 15 wins and a berth in the CAC Tournament. The Bobcats posted five wins in league action and were 4-1 at Bobcat Arena. FSU led the league in digs (2,326) and finished second in digs per game (17.62). Fletcher joined the Frostburg coaching staff after a four-year stint as both the head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT). Fletcher accomplished a lot in four years with the Wildcats, turning around a struggling women’s program while starting the men’s program from scratch in 2008. On the women’s side, Fletcher led SUNYIT to three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament appearances and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. She was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and won 61 total matches in the last three years. For the men, Fletcher guided the team to five wins in its inaugural season in 2008 while in 2010, the men’s squad led the nation in team and individual digs. This spring, the Wildcats made their first postseason appearance in the program’s brief history. In 2009, Fletcher was honored by the AVCA as one of thirty up-and-coming coaches under the age of 30 years old in the sport of volleyball at all collegiate levels. Prior to her time at SUNYIT, she served as a graduate assistant at Utica College for one year in 2006. Fletcher graduated in 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and pre-health from Washington & Jefferson College. She was a three-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2002. In 2005, W&J won the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the ECAC Tournament.

Coaching Staff Paige Hiatt College: Idaho State

Assistant Coach Paige Hiatt enters her first year as the Frostburg State University assistant volleyball coach for the 2014 season. Hiatt comes to Frostburg after serving as Southern Virginia’s head coach in 2013. She led a young Knight squad to a 15-9 overall record, including a 6-3 record against Capital Athletic Conference teams in its first season as a member of the league. The Knights also boasted an 8-2 record at home. Prior to Southern Virginia, Hiatt has served as girl’s volleyball assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at Lone Peak High School in Utah for three seasons (2007, 2010, 2012). During those years, Hiatt and head coach Deanna Meyer led the way to two Utah 5A state titles in 2007 and 2010, while reaching the state championship game again in 2012. In addition to Lone Peak, Hiatt has coached club

volleyball of varying age groups in Utah and Idaho from 2005-12. A 2010 graduate, Hiatt played women’s volleyball at Idaho State University where she earned All-Big Sky honors her senior season at libero and served as team captain her final two years. Hiatt holds the single-season digs record (503) and ranks fifth on the all-time career digs list (1,096) at Idaho State. As a student-athlete at Lone Peak, she led her varsity squad to back-to-back state championships (2003-04), the two-time team captain earned 4A Utah’s Most Valuable Player award in 2004. She was also twice named an allstate performer as well as academic all-state selection her senior year. She is married to Frostburg State’s football offensive coordinator, Tye Hiatt.

Erin Brandon College: Utah

Assistant Coach Erin Brandon enters her first year as an assistant coach with the Frostburg State University volleyball program in 2014. Brandon graduated this past May (2014) from the University of Utah where she double majored in communications sciences and disorders along with human development and family studies. While at Utah, Brandon was a four-year starter at middle blocker for the Utes volleyball program. She earned AllPac-12 Honorable Mention honors as both a junior and senior and was named All-Mountain West Conference as a sophomore in 2010. As a senior last fall, Brandon was selected to the AVCA All-Pacific North Region Honorable Mention team after finishing second in the Pac-12 and 20th in the NCAA with 1.39 blocks per set and leading the team with a .326 hitting percentage. She was a two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player

2

of the Week. She finished her career ranked third in school history in hitting percentage (.325), fourth in blocks (574) and ninth in career kills (1,132). She was the 14th member of Utah’s 1,000-kill club.

2014 Season Preview Fourth-year head coach Becky Fletcher is looking to turn the corner this fall in her rebuilding of the Frostburg State volleyball program and she has the talent and depth to do just that. The Bobcats return four key starters from a season ago and welcome in plenty of talented newcomers

Aside from the returning players and transfers, Fletcher and her staff will also count on the nine freshmen on the roster to have a significant impact in their first season. “We have a large freshmen class that has plenty of

that make the 2014 version of the Bobcat volleyball team one of the deepest in recent memory. “Our returning players bring leadership and valuable experience to a very young and fresh team,” said Fletcher. “Our returners should lead us offensively this fall.” When asked about her returning talent, Fletcher mentioned her five returning players, but she was quick to point out that her newcomers should not be overlooked. “We have two transfers that will see significant playing time this season,” added Fletcher. “They bring much needed defense and ball control to the team.”

depth and will see significant court time. They will help fill in holes and five players could potentially start at some point early in the season. Although they are young, they have substantial experience as most have played at a high level both in club volleyball or in high school,” added Fletcher. Fletcher has led Frostburg to the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament in each of her previous three seasons, but is optimistic for a deeper run in the tournament this season. “Our non-conference schedule will get us ready for the tough CAC slate. We have the potential to surprise some people in the league this year,” said Fletcher. “We are bigger, faster and stronger than a year ago even with the youth on the roster.” Leading the way up front will be senior Morgan Hoover and junior Aimee Petrides. The duo combined for 539 kills and 90 blocks a year ago and should once again be a key one-two punch for the Bobcats at the net. Hoover finished second on the team a year ago in both kills (199) and blocks (65) as a junior. She has 490 kills and 219 blocks over her three previous seasons. Petrides paced the Frostburg attack with 340 kills a year ago behind a 2.81 kill per set average. At 6’0”, she is one of the tallest members of the team and has proven to be one of the most versatile players in the CAC after adding 268 digs to her numbers as well. Junior Caitlyn Collins had a breakout season as a sophomore, finishing fourth in the CAC and leading FSU with 772 assists. She had just 33 assists as a freshman and she will continue to improve on those numbers in her third season. She also finished fourth on the team with 255 digs.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
