Head Coach Megan Foy was selected from a national search to become the head coach of the Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team just prior to the 2012 season. She is the eighth head coach in the program’s 48-year history and enters her third year in 2014. A season ago, Frostburg finished with five wins, appeared in the CAC Tournament and had three players selected to the All-CAC teams. FSU opened the season with three wins in its first five games and finished second in the league in clears (153), second in shot percentage (47.5%) and third in saves (156). Foy’s 2012 Bobcat squad posted three wins in their first five games and finished the season with four total victories. Frostburg defeated Bridgewater (15-8), Hood (20-5), W.Va. Wesleyan (22-2) and Wesley (1811). Bobcat midfielder Malory Brunett earned Second Team All-CAC honors for the second-straight season. Foy came to FSU after spending a year and a half as an assistant coach at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. In 2011, she helped the Pacers to a program best 13-5 overall record and first-ever bid to the ECAC Tournament. Marywood earned the top seed in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament and had six players selected to the All-CSAC teams. Prior to Marywood, Foy served as the head coach of the Ravens Lacrosse Club Program in Baltimore, Md. in 2009-10 and was an assistant coach for the Green Turtle Lacrosse Club in Bel Air, Md. in 2008-09. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from fellow CAC member York (Pa.) College in May 2010. She was a standout four-year member of the Spartan lacrosse team. She was a two-year captain, helped the team to 35 wins during her four years and is the school’s record holder in ground balls and caused turnovers in a single game. On the offensive end, Foy scored 61 goals and handed out 13 assists. She completed her master’s degree in human services with a concentration in marriage and family therapy in December 2013.

Assistant Coaches Jordan Hall C o l l e g e : Yo r k ( P a . )

Assistant Coach Jordan Hall enters her first year as a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team in 2014. Hall comes to Frostburg after a four-year playing career for the York College of Pennsylvania women’s lacrosse team. A three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference selection at defender, Hall posted 95 ground balls, 53 draw controls, 38 caused turnovers and one goal. She is fourth in school history in games played (70), fifth in games started (55) and seventh in caused turnovers. A three-year starter, Hall helped the Spartans to the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the program’s first appearance. A year later, YCP earned the program’s second trip to the NCAA Tournament and the Spartans advanced to the

Sweet 16. Hall helped York (Pa.) to a No. 9 ranking in the IWLCA poll in 2012, while as a senior, the Spartans were ranked 11th in the country. Hall graduated from York (Pa.) with a bachelors degree in psychology in May (2013) and she is currently pursuing her masters in school counseling.

Jenny Davis College: Frostburg State

Volunteer Assistant Coach Jenny Davis joins the Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse coaching staff after a four-year playing career for the Bobcats. Davis appeared in 57 games and made 27 starts in a Bobcat uniform. She totaled 39 ground balls, 30 caused turnovers, seven assists and four goals. Davis was a four-year member of Frostburg’s StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and a three-year member of the Capital Athletic Conference SAAC from 2011-13. She also served as President of both committees. She was a two-year’s Dean’s List student (2011-12) and was selected to the All-CAC Academic team as a

2014 Season Preview The 2014 women’s lacrosse team has undergone a lot of changes and head coach Megan Foy is hoping a new, fresh team dynamic will help improve on last year’s 5-11 campaign. Foy arguably boasts the most physically fit roster in her three-year tenure and the Bobcats are armed and ready to compete with a strong Capital Athletic Conference schedule. Equipped with just a 19-woman roster, Foy has changed the game plan around dramatically. The team has undergone a lot of changes, including shifting several players to different positions. “We have transitioned a lot of our players to hone their skills on both ends of the field. This will allow us to have depth and have options for anyone to mesh into a position that needs to be filled,” said Foy. As the team has worked on becoming better overall lacrosse players and not just specialists, the coaching staff hopes that the entire roster will be prepared with a better understanding of the game and a much more aggressive approach to both ends of the field.

[ B RU N E T T ]

Midfield The 2014 roster will rely heavily on the midfield position, as it boasts the team’s three captains and a trio of all-CAC performers. Two-time Second Team All-CAC honoree and the 2011 CAC Rookie of the Year, Malory Brunett returns to the lineup after battling a season-ending injury last year. After a year of recovery, the junior captain is poised to have another successful year on the draw and in the midfield. “Malory is a very vocal leader who always has the team’s best interest in mind. She provides a positive mentality and a drive for our team to progress and evolve.” She appeared in the first four games of the season last year, totaling 10 goals, 12 ground balls, 19 draw controls and caused eight turnovers. The tandem of senior Megan White and junior Ellie Garner have both made the transition to the midfield. White has spent her three years primarily on attack and Garner has been on the defensive side of the ball but both will look to showcase their talents on both ends of the field this season. The two play a very similar game, both boast intelligence, skills, and physical fitness and will add depth and experience to the midfield. “Megan and Ellie work well together on the attack, they always seem to find each other and on the opposite end of the field, they both are aggressive and tough.” White appeared in every game and started 15 contests, garnered All-CAC Second Team honors and has been named a captain for the 2014 season. She led the team in goals with 32, finished third on the roster in points (38) and fourth in assists (6). Garner started 11 of 15 appearances, tallying 19 ground balls, 10 draw controls and caused six turnovers. The final captain on the roster is sophomore Marissa Howk. When a sophomore is selected to be captain that shows something about the player and that rings true with Howk. Last year she mostly filled a defensive slot but will be looked upon to utilize her talents on attack this year as well. Last season, she quietly showed her offensive capabilities scoring two goals and posted a perfect shot percentage (1.00) with six shots on goal. She appeared in every game while starting 15. She posted 15 ground balls, nine draw controls and caused nine turnovers. The coaching staff will also rely on All-CAC Second Team performer Jessica Jones to provide leadership and experience on the field. The coaching staff is hoping that her defensive accolades will shift to grab post-season honors at the midfield position. “Jessica has great skills and athleticism; furthermore, she is a leader on the field and always provides a positive influence for the rest of the team.” The junior appeared in every game a year ago, while contributing 14 starts for the Bobcats. She finished second on the team in draw controls (27) and third in ground balls (25). Offensively, she posted three goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal against Southern Virginia. The midfield also showcases a set of twins who are set to compete for starting roles. Freshmen Megan and Molly Hart hail from Howard High School in Ellicott City, Md. The versatile, hard-working midfielders are no strangers to a higher level of lacrosse as their high school made it to the state semi-finals in Class 4A/3A. The only other senior on the roster is Brittney Miller, who returns to the Bobcats after an absence due to battling a back

2014 Season Preview injury. The coaching staff hopes that her speed and quickness will provide a good depth to the midfield. Two freshmen round out the position. Emani Byrd and Alyssa Barlow will compete for time in the defensive midfield and provide the Bobcats with two scrappy and aggressive options. Looking like opposites on the field, Byrd has a tall stature and plays very aggressive. Barlow plays a very feisty game and is arguably the team’s shortest player but hopes to use her size and fitness to her advantage. Attack Since the team has undergone a lot of transitions from attack to midfield, the Bobcats will look to juniors Emily Walker and Jessica Norris along with freshman Taylor Mone to provide the offensive firepower. Walker possesses the most experience on offense, starting 13 and appearing in every game of 2013. Walker will contend to be the team’s leading scorer. A smart and composed asset, she will push to grab some individual postseason accolades. Walker finished fourth on last year’s roster in goals (16) and third in shots on goal percentage (.929). She had an impressive five-goal game, taking just six shots against Goucher last season. Norris will also be competing for a starting spot after a 2013 campaign that featured 10 appearances and two starts. Another Bobcat to switch her position, Norris has been relentlessly working towards an easy transition from defense to offense. “She’s a hard worker and does all the behind the scenes work; she’s always putting in the time during and outside of practice.” Mone completes the offensive attack. Mone possesses an accurate shot and she is a very unselfish player and will compete to see time. Defense While the focus of the team will mostly rely on the midfielders, the coaching staff will look to some of its younger players and rookies to shore up the defensive roles. Sophomore Brooke Dolan will be contending for a starting spot on defense. She brings a calm atmosphere to the defense; her composed nature will be leaned on during high-pressure or man-down situations. With a year of experience under her belt (14 games, seven starts), Dolan looks to bring a bigger presence to the position, after totaling four ground balls and five caused turnovers a season ago. The group welcomes a freshman walk-on in Cori Thompson. Thompson is a hard working defender and is willing and able to put in the work to see time at the collegiate level. Her 2011 lacrosse team appeared in a regional championship. A familiar face in the CAC but not for lacrosse is junior Katie Smith. Smith, a 2013 NSCAA Scholar East Region honoree, has started the last 38 games in goal for the Frostburg women’s soccer team. This season, although having no prior background, Smith is trying her hand in lacrosse. “The team has banded together and has really shown her how to play the game, which just shows how special this group of girls really is.” Smith brings her goalkeeper mindset to the defense as well as her impressive physical fitness. Her sound stick skills and unselfish play makes her a valuable addition to the roster. Finalizing the defense is freshman Ali Scrivener. Scrivener provides yet another option for a defensive position. She is a strong and a composed defender and has a knack for clearing the ball well in transition. Goalies With the absence of both keepers from a year ago, an open competition will ensue for the starting position in the net. Sophomore Heather Lowe returns to the Bobcat roster after a season-ending injury. Back at 100 percent, her teammates trust her in the cage and even though she was on the sidelines last year she was relied on to keep team morale high. She will look to get back on the field and make an impact this season. Newcomer Dylan Teitelbaum will fight to take the starting goalie spot. After coming off a very successful high school career, she comes into the 2014 season with her eye on the starting position. The 2013 All-State goalie helped guide her team to the Long Island Class A championship game. “Dylan is very likable; she always wants to be in the cage and works well with her teammates.” Schedule With a conference schedule that features three nationally ranked teams and three teams that reached the NCAA semifinals last season, the Bobcats will have their work cut out for them if they want to improve on last season’s overall record. Headlining the Bobcats tough spring slate will be defending national champion Salisbury (23-0), who heads into 2014 ranked first in the IWLCA preseason poll. FSU will also host both 11th ranked York (Pa.) (14-5) and 16th ranked Christopher Newport (18-3). Frostburg will also host Mary Washington (11-7) who enters the season just outside of the top20 preseason poll. Frostburg State kicks off its season with three-straight home games, including its home opener against Allegheny on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 5:00 pm.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all

situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
