Head Coach Carly Sweeney Ca rly
SWEENEY HEAD COACH KEENE STATE
Carly Sweeney enters her fifth season at the helm of the Frostburg State University field hockey program in 2015. Over the last four seasons, Sweeney has steered the Bobcats to 25 wins and has turned a program around that saw just three wins in the 2010 season, prior to her arrival in 2011. A year ago, Frostburg finished 6-12 overall and led the CAC in saves (182) and finished fourth in defensive saves (13). For the second-consecutive year, Frostburg placed five on the 2014 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, while two were again named NCAA Division III Scholars of Distinction. As a team, the Bobcats carried a 3.227 GPA and were named a Division III Academic Team. Sweeney guided Frostburg to a 7-13 season in 2013. FSU led the league in shot on goal percentage (71%) while finishing second in the league in defensive saves (30), for the second-straight year. Academically, five Bobcats were named to the 2013 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, while two were honored as NCAA Division III Scholars of Distinction. In 2012, Sweeney led the Bobcats to the CAC
Tournament behind a 7-14 overall record. Frostburg finished 5-4 at Bobcat Stadium, including the FSU Tournament championship in early September. The Bobcats again led the league in saves (247), finished second in defensive saves (27) and fourth in scoring (44 goals). In 2011, FSU finished 5-15 overall and 1-5 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Despite the record, the Bobcats showed signs of improvement throughout the season, posting shutout wins over Sweet Briar (9-0), Shenandoah (4-0) and St. Vincent (6-0). The Bobcats led the league in saves (312) and save percentage (80%), finished fifth in scoring (42) and fourth in defensive saves (15). Sweeney, the program’s 14th coach, came to Frostburg after serving as the head field hockey coach at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, Ca. since 2009. She led the Mavericks to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Playoff Quarterfinals in each season while guiding her 2010 team to a 19-8 record and the Serra Tournament Championship. Prior to La Costa, Sweeney was the top assistant coach at NCAA Division III Keene State College in Keene, N.H. During her four years (2005-09) with the program, she helped guide the team to a 68-26 overall record with four NCAA Tournament appearances and four Little East Conference (LEC) Titles. Sweeney graduated from Keene State in 2004 with her bachelor’s degree of arts in film. She was a four-year recipient of the Talent Scholarship for Film (2000-04) and won the Lefty Lablanc Award for Academic and Athletic Achievement in 2000. She also enjoyed a four-year playing career for the Owl field hockey team. She helped the squad to a 61-31 overall record and a 34-6 record in the LEC. In her final season, she led the team to a 19-6 overall slate, a perfect 10-0 LEC record and an ECAC Tournament Championship. She was awarded All-West Regional Field Hockey Honors and was named to the All-LEC team in 2004. Sweeney was a Site Director for the USA Field Hockey Futures Program.

Jacober comes to Frostburg after serving as an assistant coach at Elmira College for the last two seasons. The Soaring Eagles were twice named an NFHCA National Academic team and two players garnered All-Empire 8 honors. Prior to Elmira, Jacober was a four-year standout field hockey player for Delaware Valley College. A four-year starter, Jacober helped the Aggies to three appearances in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) playoffs, including a

TAFRO ASSISTANT COACH MONTCLAIR STATE
Jennifer Tafro enters her first season as a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State University field hockey team in 2014. Tafro comes to FSU after serving as an assistant coach at the Quik Stik Elite Field Hockey Club for the last two years. She worked specifically in introducing skills, creating drills and managing travel for the team to showcases and tournaments while arranging accommodations, dinners and team activities. Prior to Quik Stix, she worked as an assistant at the USA Field Hockey Futures Olympic Training Program. Tafro graduated from Montclair in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in justice studies with a double concentration in justice systems and international justice.
2015 Season Preview With the loss of just one senior from a year ago, the Frostburg field hockey team returns 10 starters and a wealth of talent for fifth-year head coach Carly Sweeney. Her 2015 squad will boast five seniors, the return of its top two scorers, three starting defenders and a 16-game starter in goal. “We have strength across every line and in goal and we are stacked with depth across the board,” said Sweeney. “We have several players that have three years under their belts and when you add in 12 talented freshmen, we have the potential to shock some teams this year.” FSU posted six wins last fall and just missed out on the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, a hurdle Sweeney would like to clear this fall. And she believes she has the talent and depth to do just that. “Our depth will allow us (coaching staff) to play our reserve
[ JO H NS O N ]
players without any gaps in our play on the field,” added Sweeney. “We truly are in a good position heading into the season.” Frostburg finished with three shutouts at home, took runner-up at the FSU Tournament in early September and has the momentum to reach their goals this fall. Throw in the fact that Frostburg has dropped its goals against average in each of the last four seasons and the Bobcats appear to be headed in the right direction. Sweeney’s ’15 Bobcat roster will be highlighted by four seniors and two juniors who combined to make 87 starts last fall, while producing 70 points on the offensive end and stopping 146 shots in net. Seniors Ashley Johnson, Emma Wade and Jackie Best return for their fourth and final years with Frostburg field hockey, while senior Alexandra Darrow is entering her third campaign with the Bobcats.

2015 Season Preview Heading into the ’14 season, Johnson made the switch to defense and instantly made an impact, starting in 17 games and registering five points. Meanwhile, Wade started all 18 games as a junior and tied for the team lead with three defensive saves. “Wade and Johnson will serve as our defensive anchors this year on the backline,” added Sweeney. “This veteran leadership will help further improve on our goals against average.” Best returns to the frontline after finishing second last year in points (26), goals (10) and assists (6), while Darrow paced the Frostburg lineup in scoring and the coaching staff is expecting big things from her again this fall. She finished sixth in the CAC in scoring (30 pts.) and should fight for a spot on the All-CAC teams following the season. Adding to the returning defensive talent will be junior

keeper Jacqueline Gover after making 16 starts and registering 146 saves in her first year as a starter in 2014. In the midfield, juniors Taylor Bowen and Jacquelyn Nava along with sophomore Savannah Neubert return to provide plenty of depth and talent. The trio each started all 18 games last season and will provide more support on the attack this fall will talent on the back line behind them. Bowen, Nava and Neubert totaled 18 points for the Bobcats, while Neubert matched Wade’s three defensive saves. Frostburg opens the 2015 fall season on Tuesday, September 1 at Dickinson at 4:00 pm.

About Frostburg State
From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
