Head Coach Tommy Pearce Tom my

PEARCE HEAD COACH GETTYSBURG

Tommy Pearce was chosen to start the new era of men’s lacrosse for Frostburg State University in the early summer of 2009 and he has quickly turned his program into one of the top teams in region. Over the last two seasons, the Bobcats posted 27 total wins and advanced to the ECAC South Region Championship game twice. FSU made an appearance in the CAC Tournament in each season and finished runnerup in the league in scoring twice. Last spring, Frostburg finished 14-6 overall and was chosen to host the ECAC South Region Championship. The Bobcats led the CAC in face-off winning percentage (.633), face-offs won (292) and ground balls per game (39.45). At Bobcat Stadium, FSU finished 8-2 with a win in both the CAC and ECAC Tournaments. In 2013, Pearce led the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record and FSU capped the year with an appearance in the ECAC South Region Tournament Championship. The Bobcats finished the season ranked ninth in the country in man-up offense (.390) and 19th in ground balls per game (41.80). For his efforts, Pearce was named the CAC’s Coach of the Year. In his second season in 2012, the Bobcats posted wins over Shenandoah (146) and Washington & Jefferson (8-6) and suffered six losses by four goals or less. The Bobcats finished fourth in the CAC in ground balls (637), fifth in caused turnovers (144) and seventh in both goals (113) and assists (64). In the program’s first year in 2011,

Frostburg finished 6-11 overall and 1-7 in the league. The Bobcats had two players finish in the top-10 in the league in scoring while Ryan Serio was named the CAC Rookie of the Year. Frostburg opened the season with a 10-3 win over Shenandoah and finished with wins over Neumann (20-9), St. Joseph’s (19-3), Susquehanna (10-9), Marymount (11-8) and Washington & Jefferson (12-6). Pearce came to Frostburg State University from Gettysburg College where he served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team for four seasons (2006-09). A native of Chestertown, Md., Pearce helped Gettysburg to an incredible run during his time with the Bullets. The team won the Centennial Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of those four seasons, including a national runner-up finish in 2009. Gettysburg collected an overall record of 66-12 and was consistently ranked in the top-10 in the nation, including a No. 5 ranking at the conclusion of his final season. Pearce, who earned the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association 2008 Division III Outstanding Assistant Coach award, helped recruit and coach 20 All-Americans while at Gettysburg, including six in 2009. Success at Gettysburg came not only as a coach for Pearce, but also as a player. He was a two-time All-American, garnering First Team honors in 2001 as well as being named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Player of the Year. He helped the Bullets to four-straight conference titles and the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III national championship game. Pearce graduated from Gettysburg in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in English and received his master’s degree from McDaniel College in 2008 in physical education and athletic administration.

A year ago, Runyon helped Frostburg to a 14-6 overall record, including appearances in both the CAC and ECAC Tournaments. FSU advanced to the ECAC South Region Championship contest for the second-consecutive season, led the CAC in face-offs won (292) and finished second in goals scored (246). Runyon came to FSU after serving as an assistant coach for the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team in Springfield, Mass. As the team’s offensive coordinator, Runyon helped the Pride to 24 wins in two seasons with a pair of Pilgrim League Tournament Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2012, Springfield posted a 14-4 overall record and was ranked as high as 12th in the nation. Along with being the offensive coordinator, Runyon served as the team’s recruiting coordinator, assisted with daily practice plans and led the program’s fundraising

2015 Season Preview The 2015 version of the Frostburg State University men’s lacrosse program is brimming with confidence and optimism after two successful seasons in 2013 and 2014 that culminated in a total of 27 wins, 14 at home, and two appearances in the ECAC South Region Championship game. On one hand, the Bobcats graduated 17 seniors last spring, including several starters and an All-CAC First Team selection at faceoff. But on the other, Frostburg returns four of its top five scoring midfielders, two All-CAC honorees on defense and a trio at attack that combined for 117 points last spring. “We graduated 17 seniors, including several starters, but we (coaching staff) don’t feel like we are depleted in any one position,” said sixth-year head coach Tommy Pearce. “Where we have spots to fill on the field we are very confident in the guys we have available.” Frostburg only returns five starters from last spring, but 13 returners appeared in 10 or more games at key positions. “The loss of so many seniors sounds worse than it really is,” added Pearce. “We are confident in the guys we have and we feel like we can keep everything rolling along and continue to build on the last two seasons.” And that starts in the talent-laden midfield that will again handle the bulk of the scoring and returns four of its top five scorers from last spring. Seniors Chris Rios, Greg Bourne and Spencer Barnett along with junior Tate Rolland form one of the top midfields in the CAC after combining for 125 points in 2014. Rios, a team captain, has been the top scoring midfielder in each of his three seasons and this spring shouldn’t be any different. He is a dynamic athlete that enters his final season with 114 career points. Bourne and Barnett are solid and consistent contributors that combined for 49 points and 45 ground balls last spring. Bourne also added four man-up goals. Rolland, in just his second year with FSU after transferring last year, made an immediate impact on the lineup, appearing in 20 games and finishing third on the team in assists (10) and tied for fifth in goals (21). Three-time senior captains Zach Burkhardt and Paul Newman are experienced leaders and both emerged as two of the top defenders in the conference after they garnered Second Team All-CAC honors last spring. The duo will again lead a defensive unit that finished third in the league in goals against (147) and goals against average (7.35). Burkhardt finished second in the CAC in caused turnovers (34), while Newman totaled 21 caused turnovers and 27 ground balls. Battling for the third and final starting position on defense will be senior Andrew Richardson who played in nine games a year ago. The trio of senior Devin Colegrove and juniors Spenser Love and Nick Stailey will power the attack for the Bobcats

2015 Season Preview after all three players appeared in all 20 games a year ago. Colegrove led the team in scoring as a freshman and again last spring as a junior after totaling 62 points, behind a team-best 35 assists. Colegrove has registered at least one point in 52 career games and is Frostburg’s career leader in assists (83). He is a well-rounded player that sees the field well and should compete for the league’s scoring title. In his two years at FSU, Love has totaled 102 points in just 40 games and is Frostburg’s best off-the-ball goal scorer. He finished second on the team last spring with 35 goals on just 88 shots (.398%). Junior Nick Stailey has made a lot of his playing opportunities over his first two years and the coaching staff is expecting him to fill more of a starting role this spring. He has appeared in all 40 games over his first two years with eight starts and he has 38 points to his credit. In his first year in 2013, Stailey finished fifth on the team in both points (24) and goals (17). Despite the depth and talent seemingly at every position, Pearce and his staff know that losing 17 seniors will leave a void somewhere on the roster and the Bobcats will have competition at both faceoff and in goal. “Two big losses for us came in Billy Lark (faceoff) and Tyler Haines (goalie),” said Pearce. “But again, we have a lot of faith in the guys that played behind them (Lark & Haines) and we feel they are ready to fill in and take their place.” Leading the way this spring at faceoff will be junior Erik Geiser, while juniors Tom Kraemer and Taylor Schmitz will battle for the starting position in net. Geiser will become the team’s primary faceoff specialist after playing in all 20 games a year ago and winning 44-of-73 faceoffs (60.3%). In his previous two years with the Bobcats, Geiser has won 68-of-127 faceoffs (53.5%) and scooped up 84 ground balls. Sophomore Kyle Horak will provide support in the faceoff behind Geiser. Kraemer and Schmitz will indeed compete for the starting spot in goal and both have seen significant time over their previous two years. Kraemer has played in 12 games with one start last spring and totaled 11 saves, including a win over Southern Virginia. Schmitz has appeared in nine games and has registered eight saves. At long-stick midfield, Frostburg lost a pair of seniors from a year ago, but sophomore Alex Philips returns and will fill the primary role this season. As a freshman, he played in six games with three ground balls and one caused turnover. The Bobcats will also look to junior John Gamber to grab the starting position at short stick defensive midfield. After losing a four-year starter to graduation, Gamber will see significant time after appearing in seven games with four points, nine ground balls and four caused turnovers from a year ago.
