BYRNES HEAD COACH PLATTSBURGH STATE
Keith Byrnes enters his 14th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2015 and has led the Bobcats to a 133-95-25 overall record. He is the third-winningest coach in the 74-year history of the Frostburg men’s program. Over the last four seasons, Byrnes has guided the Bobcats to 36 wins, 12 ties and three appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament (2011-13). FSU has posted 16 wins and five ties in the Capital Athletic Conference and has earned four-consecutive berths in the CAC Tournament. In 2011, Byrnes was named the CAC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg to an 11-3-5 overall record and 4-2-2 league slate. Frostburg emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the country in 2014 after finishing second in the nation in save percentage (.909), fifth in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU, which finished 10-6-3 overall, posted 11 shutouts, including five in the CAC. The Bobcats finished with a pair of All-CAC honorees, both from the defensive side of the field. The Bobcats played to a 13-7 overall mark behind a perfect 9-0 record at home in 2013. FSU posted six shutouts, including five at home and won the FSU Tournament Championship for the third-straight year. Byrnes’ team finished third in the CAC in scoring (2.0 gpg), fourth in goals (40) and fifth in assists (26). In 2012, Byrnes guided Frostburg State to a 10-0-3 start, one of just 11 NCAA Division III schools to open the season undefeated through the first 13 contests. FSU finished 2012 with a 12-3-4 overall record. The 2010 year marked the first for Frostburg as a member of the CAC, one of the nation’s toughest leagues. The Bobcats finished 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the CAC. Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eightstraight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The Bobcats posted an overall record of 83-66-10 in Byrnes’ first eight years at the helm. During that stretch, 36 players earned All-AMCC honors and Byrnes was named the league’s coach of the year in 2008.
In ‘08, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. In 2007, the Bobcats won six of their final eight games, including a run to the ECAC South Region Championship game. FSU also set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 16-0 defeat of Mt. Aloysius. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the part-time head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of post-season appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

MCCARTHY ASSISTANT COACH HOBART
Kevin McCarthy enters his third season as the top assistant coach with the Frostburg State University men’s soccer team in 2015. Last fall, the Bobcats finished 10-6-3 overall and finished second in the country in save percentage (.909), fifth in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU finished with 11 shutouts on the season and advanced to the CAC Tournament. In 2013, McCarthy helped lead the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record that included a perfect 9-0 record at home. Frostburg advanced to the CAC Tournament semifinals and won the FSU Tournament, both for the third-straight season. McCarthy arrived at FSU after several coaching stints at the collegiate level. In 2012, McCarthy served as the men’s and women’s assistant coach at Ave Maria University. Prior to his stop in south Florida, he was an assistant coach at Manhattanville College from 2011-12. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, helping with team academics and assisted in event management. The Valiants finished 15-4-1 and
appeared in the NCAA Tournament. McCarthy received his first collegiate assistant position at William Smith College in the spring of 2011. He designed and assisted with training sessions for the women’s soccer team. While at Ave Maria, McCarthy also served as the head coach of the Florida Fire Juniors, an under-11 boys soccer team. A May ’11 graduate of Hobart College, McCarthy served as team captain and led the Statesmen to a 52-15-12 overall record with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and garnered All-Liberty League Second Team honors as a senior in 2010. In 2013, McCarthy played for and served as team captain of the Cape Coral Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). McCarthy received his NSCAA National Diploma in January 2012 and is pursuing his MBA at Frostburg State.

O’ROURKE ASSISTANT COACH KEYSTONE
Daniel O’Rourke enters his second year as a graduate assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2015. He will primarily work with the goalkeepers on both squads. O’Rourke helped the Bobcat women capture the 2014 CAC Tournament Championship, including an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. On the men’s side, Frostburg finished second in the nation in save percentage (.909) and fifth in team goals against average (.45). O’Rourke joined the Bobcat staffs after a successful playing career at Keystone College. He was team captain, Second Team All-Conference and an All-Academic honoree as a freshman. In his sophomore year, he was awarded Defensive MVP while starting every game since his debut at Keystone. Prior to Keystone, O’Rourke was as a member of several

soccer teams including Dundrum AFC, St. Joseph’s Boys AFC and Arklow Town AFC. He also played two years in the NPSL for both the Pocono Snow based in Stroudsburg, Pa. and for the Electric Shock in Scranton, Pa. He also brought coaching experience to the Bobcats as he served as an assistant goalkeeping coach to the UCD Ladies’ Soccer Team. O’Rourke graduated from Keystone College with a bachelor’s degree in sport and recreation management. He currently serves as an assistant coach of the newly formed NPSL Team, the Electric Shock based in Scranton, Pa. O’Rourke has a Leinster Senior League Championship Winners medal and two Youth Team European Tournament Championships in Holland and Italy.
2015 Season Preview Without question, defense was the strong suit of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program a year ago and not much will change for the 2015 version of the Bobcats. However, 14th-year head coach Keith Byrnes and his staff are expecting to relieve some of the pressure on their defense with a renewed focus on the front line. “Because we had a strong defensive season last year, we focused our recruiting efforts on the offensive end of the field,” noted Byrnes. “We need to get better (on the front line) and we are excited about the young talent that should kick start our offense.” A year ago, Frostburg finished second in the nation in save percentage (.909) and fifth in team goals against average (0.45). The Bobcats allowed just nine goals in 19 games, including five goals in nine conference games.
[ MUISE ]
While the defense boasts some impressive numbers, the Bobcat offense returns its top four scorers from ‘14 that combined to score 28 points. “We want our offense to complement our backline,” added Byrnes. “We want our offense to help win games rather than just rely on our defense.” Byrnes and his squad rode their stellar defensive play to 10 wins, 11 shutouts and an appearance in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. “We obviously have a goal of reaching the postseason again this year,” noted Byrnes. “The CAC is so competitive and it’s exciting to know the caliber of teams we face every game.” ______ Leading the way will be senior defender Mitchell Muise and junior keeper Hassan Mostafa. Both started all 19 games a

2015 Season Preview In his 19 starts, Muise added three goals, including the game winner in a 1-0 victory over Hood. He also started all 19 games as a freshman in 2011. Mostafa finished second in the country and led the CAC with a 0.905 save percentage and he finished eighth nationally and first in the league in goals against average (0.476). His on-the-field efforts led to NSCAA All-Region, ECAC All-Star and All-CAC First Team honors. “We will see some new personnel on defense, but the expectations will be the same,” added Byrnes. On the opposite end of the field, junior Nabayee Tesfu paced the Bobcats with five goals and one assist in 18 starts on the front line. Tesfu’s best effort came with a hat trick in a crucial 3-2 win over York (Pa.) in mid-October. “Obviously, he is our returning leader on the offensive end,”
[ T E S FU ]
noted Byrnes. “He has the talent to be an impact player and we are expecting him to be more consistent.” Junior Chris Herbert, Frostburg’s do-it-all talent, returns and will provide veteran leadership to the midfield after starting all but five games over his first two seasons. In 2013, he scored three goals, while a year ago, he helped the defense to 10 shutouts. “He is our high energy player and he is able to cover a lot of ground,” stated Byrnes. “His role will be primarily in the defensive midfield, but he could also see time on defense depending on how the preseason goes.” Frostburg opens its 2015 campaign on Wednesday, September 2, when it hosts Bethany (W.Va.) at 7:00 pm.

Ab out Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
