Megan Foy was selected from a national search to become the head coach of the Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team just prior to the 2012 season. She is the eighth head coach in the program’s 49-year history and enters her fourth year in 2015. A season ago, Foy directed the Bobcats to four wins and a pair of All-CAC honorees. As a team, FSU finished third in the league in saves (156), fifth in caused turnovers (149) and seventh in goals scored (164). Frostburg closed out the season with three wins in its final six contests. In 2013, Frostburg finished with five wins, appeared in the CAC Tournament and had three players selected to the All-CAC teams. FSU opened the season with three wins in its first five games and finished second in the league in clears (153), second in shot percentage (47.5%) and third in saves (156). Foy’s 2012 Bobcat squad posted three wins in their first five games and finished the season with four total victories. Frostburg defeated Bridgewater (15-8), Hood (20-5), W.Va. Wesleyan (22-2) and Wesley (18-11). Foy came to FSU after spending a year and a half as an assistant coach at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. In 2011, she helped the Pacers to a program best 13-5 overall record and first-ever bid to the ECAC Tournament. Marywood earned the top seed in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament and had six players selected to the All-CSAC teams. Prior to Marywood, Foy served as the head coach of the Ravens Lacrosse Club Program in Baltimore, Md. in 2009-10 and was an assistant coach for the Green Turtle Lacrosse Club in Bel Air, Md. in 2008-09. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from fellow CAC member York (Pa.) College in May 2010. She was a standout four-year member of the Spartan lacrosse team. She was a two-year captain, helped the team to 35 wins during her four years and is the school’s record holder in ground balls and caused turnovers in a single game. On the offensive end, Foy scored 61 goals and handed out 13 assists. She completed her master’s degree in human services with a concentration in marriage and family therapy in December 2013.

2015 Season Preview The Frostburg State University women’s lacrosse team has a great combination of both returners and newcomers for the upcoming 2015 season and fourth-year head coach Megan Foy is optimistic that her squad will compete for a spot in both the CAC and ECAC Tournaments.

Foy’s squad returns nine starters from a season ago,

including five of its top seven scorers, both goal keepers and a pair of All-CAC performers.

However, Foy believes that changes she has made

throughout the program and coaching staff will be key to continuing the turn around of the program.

“We have made subtle changes in all areas of the

program from the way we coach, practice, prepare for games and those changes have made us a more organized and disciplined team,” noted Foy. “I also believe that we will be more competitive.”

[ B RU N E T T ]

One change that Foy believes to be more important

than anything else will be the midfield. She and her coaching staff have transitioned several players to the position and Foy believes that her team possesses the athleticism, depth and talent to run four lines.

“We have the talent in the rotation to keep a high level

of play no matter who is on the field,” said Foy. “Our talented midfield will also lead to a more up-tempo style of attack.”

Leading the way in the midfield will be a foursome of

players, including the return of two All-CAC performers from a year ago. Senior Malory Brunett and sophomore Emani Byrd garnered all-conference honors a year ago, while sophomores Megan and Molly Hart return after standout freshmen campaigns.

Brunett, the backbone of this year’s squad, returns for

her final year in a Bobcat uniform after emerging as one of the top players in the CAC over the past few seasons. Last spring, Brunett led the team in goals (38), points (48), ground balls (46) and draw controls (57) and currently boasts 155 career points behind 127 goals and 28 assists.

2015 Season Preview postseason honors three times and enters the season as a candidate for CAC Player of the Year. Both she and the coaching staff have lofty goals for her final year.

Pushing Brunett on the offensive end will be Megan

Hart and the duo will battle for the team’s top scorer. Hart possesses a very accurate shot that helped her finish second on the team in points (32) a year ago. She also led the team with 11 assists.

Byrd will make the transition from defense to midfield

this year after taking home All-CAC Second Team honors as a freshman. She has emerged as the team’s draw specialist this year, but will also remain Frostburg’s number one defensive option. She possesses a great shot and has the physical presence to disrupt the opponent’s top offensive players. She led the team a year ago with 31 caused turnovers and scooped up 41 ground balls.

[ BYRD ]

Voted a captain by her teammates, sophomore Molly

Hart is a smart and enthusiastic player that will add to the depth in the midfield. As a freshman she scored 13 goals and finished fifth on the team behind 18 points.

Seniors Jessica Jones and Ellie Garner enter their final

seasons after transitioning to new positions in the offseason. Jones will move to the attack after proving to be one of the most athletic and aggressive players on the Bobcat roster, while Garner will provide talent and depth to the midfield. Garner is the team’s best communicator and has great confidence on the field so it was easy for Foy and her staff to make the transition. Jones finished last season with 10 points, while Garner was fourth on the team in goals (17) and points (21).

The coaching staff is excited about the on-field

potential of returning starter Dylan Teitelbaum in goal this year after a great offseason. The sophomore started nine games a year ago and registered 80 saves.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all

situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
