Head Coach Carly Sweeney Ca rly

SWEENEY HEAD COACH KEENE STATE

Carly Sweeney enters her sixth season at the helm of the Frostburg State University field hockey program in 2016. Over the last five seasons, Sweeney has steered the Bobcats to 33 wins and has turned a program around that saw just three wins in the 2010 season, prior to her arrival in 2011. Sweeney continued the upward trend of her program last fall as the Bobcats posted the most wins (8) since the 2009 campaign. Frostburg collected five wins at Bobcat Stadium, two via shutout, and finished second in the CAC in saves per game (7.72). FSU also collected a Second Team All-CAC honoree in Alex Darrow as she finished with 22 goals, good for second on the single-season scoring list in program history. Sweeney’s team also boasted nine Zag Field Hockey/ NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad honorees, the most since 2004 and the Bobcats as a team were honored by the NFHCA as a National Academic Team for the second-straight season. In ‘14, Frostburg finished 6-12 overall and led the CAC in saves (182) and finished fourth in defensive saves (13). For the second-consecutive year, Frostburg placed five on the 2014 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, while two were again named NCAA Division III Scholars of Distinction. As a team, the Bobcats carried a 3.227 GPA and were named a Division III Academic Team. Sweeney guided Frostburg to a 7-13 season in 2013. FSU led the league in shot on goal percentage (71%) while finishing second in the league in defensive saves (30), for

the second-straight year. Academically, five Bobcats were named to the 2013 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, while two were honored as NCAA Division III Scholars of Distinction. In 2012, Sweeney led the Bobcats to the CAC Tournament behind a 7-14 overall record. Frostburg finished 5-4 at Bobcat Stadium, including the FSU Tournament championship in early September. The Bobcats again led the league in saves (247), finished second in defensive saves (27) and fourth in scoring (44 goals). In 2011, FSU finished 5-15 overall and 1-5 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Despite the record, the Bobcats showed signs of improvement throughout the season, posting shutout wins over Sweet Briar (9-0), Shenandoah (4-0) and St. Vincent (6-0). The Bobcats led the league in saves (312) and save percentage (80%), finished fifth in scoring (42) and fourth in defensive saves (15). Sweeney, the program’s 14th coach, came to Frostburg after serving as the head field hockey coach at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, Ca. since 2009. She led the Mavericks to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Playoff Quarterfinals in each season while guiding her 2010 team to a 19-8 record and the Serra Tournament Championship. Prior to La Costa, Sweeney was the top assistant coach at NCAA Division III Keene State College in Keene, N.H. During her four years (2005-09) with the program, she helped guide the team to a 68-26 overall record with four NCAA Tournament appearances and four Little East Conference (LEC) Titles. Sweeney graduated from Keene State in 2004 with her bachelor’s degree of arts in film. She was a four-year recipient of the Talent Scholarship for Film (2000-04) and won the Lefty Lablanc Award for Academic and Athletic Achievement in 2000. She also enjoyed a four-year playing career for the Owl field hockey team. She helped the squad to a 61-31 overall record and a 34-6 record in the LEC. In her final season, she led the team to a 19-6 overall slate, a perfect 10-0 LEC record and an ECAC Tournament Championship. She was awarded All-West Regional Field Hockey Honors and was named to the All-LEC team in 2004. Sweeney was a Site Director for the USA Field Hockey Futures Program.

JACOBER ASSISTANT COACH D E L AWA R E VA L L E Y

Veronica Jacober enters her second season as the top assistant coach with the Frostburg field hockey program in 2016. Jacober helped the Bobcats to eight wins last fall, the most since the 2009 season, including five victories at Bobcat Stadium. After dropping its first two games of the season, Frostburg collected six-consecutive wins including two shutouts. FSU finished second in the CAC in saves per game (7.72). Jacober came to Frostburg after serving as an assistant coach at Elmira College for the last two seasons. Jacober was the program’s recruiting coordinator and goalkeeper coach, while helping with the breakdown of film and developing game and practice plans. The Soaring Eagles were twice named an NFHCA National Academic team and two players garnered All-Empire 8 honors.

Prior to Elmira, Jacober was a four-year standout field hockey player for Delaware Valley College. A four-year starter, Jacober helped the Aggies to three appearances in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) playoffs, including a total of 30 wins. She earned All-MAC honors and was the DVC Team Offensive Player of the Year as a senior and was a three-time NFHCA and MAC All-Academic selection. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Delaware Valley in 2013 and her master’s in general education from Elmira in 2015. Jacober has served as the primary coach of the U12 and U14 teams of the Field Hockey Sports Club in Hatfield, Pa. for the last two years and she has been the Co-Site Manager/Counselor for the World Camp USA (Field Hockey) at Swarthmore College since 2012.

Travis Wyant begins his first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg field hockey program in 2016. Wyant comes to Frostburg after serving as a student assistant coach at the University of Mary Washington for the last two seasons. He gained experience in recruiting, game strategy and also post game breakdown and analysis. In his two years with UMW, the Eagles finished with a 28-10 record and ranked 10th in the nation in 2015. Along with assisting with field hockey, Wyant also served as a student assistant for the Mary Washington women’ lacrosse team for the past two seasons. 2016 Season Preview The Frostburg State field hockey team will take the field for the first time in 2016 on Saturday, Sept. 3 at McDaniel College. While the team has seen some turnover in

GOVER

the offseason with the graduation of five seniors, the Bobcats have a very talented and young core that will return this fall. Frostburg has seen a gradual increase in the program’s win total in each season Carly Sweeney has been at the helm and FSU will look to build on last year’s eight wins. “We expect to build on our number of wins from last year once again, and I really want to see our wins increase in conference play,” Sweeney remarked. “This year we have added teams to the schedule that we have not played in the past with hopes of making our non-conference schedule more competitive. I feel that playing a tougher non-conference schedule will give us more of an edge going into conference play later in the season.” Sweeney’s team will have to replace its top two scorers and All-CAC performer from last fall, but she was quick to point out that freshmen and returners will be up to the challenge and want to get Frostburg into the CAC Tournament for the first time since 2012. “This year will be more of a collective effort all across the field,” said Sweeney. “We will see more scorers throughout the roster.” “We have a lot of sophomores who saw playing time as freshmen last season, they will continue to build experience and fill in

NAVA

some of the spots we lost to our graduating seniors,” Sweeney said. Last season, Frostburg finished with eight wins, went on a six-win run in the middle of the season and posted two shutouts. The Bobcats won three games by five or more goals and finished second in the CAC in saves (139). FSU will look to its three seniors, Jackie Gover, Jackie Nava and Taylor Bowen, will continue to build on the momentum from last season to carry the Bobcats to a CAC Tournament appearance.

2016 Season Preview “I expect our three seniors, not only lead with their skill level on the field but also provide leadership through their

BOWEN

veteran experience,” Sweeney remarked. A 2014 All-CAC Second Team goalkeeper for the Bobcats, Gover will look to round out her senior year as the Bobcats starting goalkeeper for the third year in a row. The last two seasons, she started 32 games and posted 241 saves during that stretch. She has also notched two shutouts and 12 wins under her belt. Bowen enters her senior year behind 43 previous starts and as a three-year starter on the FSU midfield line. Last season, she finished fourth on the roster with eight points after pacing the team with six assists. A two-year starter, Nava will also look to provide experience and skill to the attack line going into her senior season. Last year, she finished fifth on the team with seven points on two goals and three assists. Sweeney will look to sophomore Cara Morrell and junior Liz Davis to aid Gover in providing a strong backbone to the FSU defense. Morrell started all 18 games as a defender her freshman season, while Davis, the veteran defender, has also started every game of her career. Last season, the FSU defense only allowed 53 goals for a 2.79 goals against average, good for fifth in the CAC. On offense, sophomore Samantha Schaffer is the returning leading scorer with 10 points behind five goals and 11 starts as a freshman. Her classmates Lindsay Gardiner and Molly Pickard will also contribute on the forward line for the Bobcats. Sweeney also expects to see sophomores Erin Barker, Ashleigh Myers and junior Savannah Neubert to provide versatility across the field. In goal, Sweeney is excited to have three talented keepers in Gover, junior Nicole Leighty and incoming freshman Sierra Smizer which will provide a great amount of depth to the defense. “This season I really want to put the emphasis on putting forth a combined team effort,” said Sweeney. “We have talent all across the roster and I am also excited to see how our freshman class will be able to come in and contribute right away.”

About Frostburg State

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
