Head Coach Tommy Pearce Tom my

PEARCE HEAD COACH GETTYSBURG

Tommy Pearce was chosen to start the new era of men’s lacrosse for Frostburg State University in the early summer of 2009 and he has quickly turned his program into one of the top teams in region. Prior to the 2016 season, senior goalkeeper Tom Kraemer and senior midfielder Tate Rolland were named Face-Off Yearbook DIII Preseason All-American Honorable Mention selections, building on the success from the 2015 team. Last season, Pearce led the Bobcats to a school-record 14-0 start en route to the program’s best season in school history. Frostburg was ranked as high as No. 17 in the USILA poll and eventually fell to No. 8 Salisbury in the Capital Athletic Conference championship to finish the year with a 16-3 overall record. FSU hosted a CAC Tournament semifinal game for the first time in program history and defeated Mary Washington, 7-6, to advance to the league title game. FSU set several other records, including finishing in the top-10 in several categories in the final Division III national rankings. As a team, the red and black led the nation with just 13.53 turnovers per game, finished fifth in the nation in clearing percentage (0.891), sixth in scoring defense (6.16), seventh in winning percentage (0.842), eighth in scoring margin (7.11), and ninth in assists per game (8.63). FSU also led the CAC in several categories including assists per game, clearing percentage, face-off winning percentage (0.633), turnovers per game and winning percentage. Erik Geiser led the conference with a 0.651 face-off winning percentage and 4.68 ground balls per game, while Devin Colegrove led the CAC with 2.21 assists per game. Eight Bobcats were named to the All-CAC squads following the season, while Pearce garnered CAC Coach of the Year honors. Three seniors (Zach Burkhardt, Colegrove, Chris Rios) were named to the ECAC DIII Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team, while

Burkhardt, Rios and Kraemer were named USILA All-American Honorable Mentions. From 2013 and 2014, the Bobcats posted 27 total wins and advanced to the ECAC South Region Championship game twice. FSU made an appearance in the CAC Tournament in each season and finished runner-up in the league in scoring twice. In 2014, Frostburg finished 14-6 overall and was chosen to host the ECAC South Region Championship. The Bobcats led the CAC in face-off winning percentage (.633), face-offs won (292) and ground balls per game (39.45). At Bobcat Stadium, FSU finished 8-2 with a win in both the CAC and ECAC Tournaments. In 2013, Pearce led the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record and FSU capped the year with an appearance in the ECAC South Region Tournament Championship. The Bobcats finished the season ranked ninth in the country in man-up offense (.390) and 19th in ground balls per game (41.80). For his efforts, Pearce was named the CAC’s Coach of the Year. In his second season in 2012, the Bobcats posted wins over Shenandoah (14-6) and Washington & Jefferson (8-6) and suffered six losses by four goals or less. The Bobcats finished fourth in the CAC in ground balls (637), fifth in caused turnovers (144) and seventh in both goals (113) and assists (64). In the program’s first year in 2011, Frostburg finished 6-11 overall and 1-7 in the league. The Bobcats had two players finish in the top-10 in the league in scoring while Ryan Serio was named the CAC Rookie of the Year. Frostburg opened the season with a 10-3 win over Shenandoah and finished with wins over Neumann (20-9), St. Joseph’s (19-3), Susquehanna (10-9), Marymount (11-8) and Washington & Jefferson (12-6). Pearce came to Frostburg State University from Gettysburg College where he served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team for four seasons (2006-09). A native of Chestertown, Md., Pearce helped Gettysburg to an incredible run during his time with the Bullets. The team won the Centennial Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of those four seasons, including a national runner-up finish in 2009. Gettysburg collected an overall record of 66-12 and was consistently ranked in the top-10 in the nation, including a No. 5 ranking at the conclusion of his final season. Pearce, who earned the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association 2008 Division III Outstanding Assistant Coach award, helped recruit and coach 20 All-Americans while at Gettysburg, including six in 2009. Success at Gettysburg came not only as a coach for Pearce, but also as a player. He was a two-time All-American, garnering First Team honors in 2001 as well as being named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Player of the Year. He helped the Bullets to four-straight conference titles and the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III national championship game. Pearce graduated from Gettysburg in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in English and received his master’s degree from McDaniel College in 2008 in physical education and athletic administration.

2016 Season Preview 2015 was a big year for the Frostburg State men’s lacrosse program. Sixteen victories, fourteen-straight wins, eight All-Capital Athletic Conference selections, and three USILA All-Americans. However, it’s not 2015. And the Bobcats have one goal for 2016: return to the postseason and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. It’s no fluke that the Frostburg State men’s lacrosse team has achieved a lot in six years since restarting the program in 2011 and sixth-year head coach and two-time CAC Coach of the Year Tommy Pearce has his sights set on continuing where the 2015 Bobcats left off. “We’re putting in the work to take that next step, whether it’s a Pool C bid or whether it’s managing to win the conference, that’s what we’re shooting for.” Having not even played a game yet, the team is already achieving. Two Bobcats were named 2016 FaceOff Yearbook DIII Preseason All-American selections prior to the season, with both senior goalkeeper and captain Tom Kraemer and senior midfielder Tate Rolland earning Honorable Mention honors. Kraemer, a 2015 USILA All-American pick and AllCAC First Team selection, returns between the pipes for the Bobcats. Kraemer started all 19 games last year and finished second in the conference and fifth in the nation with a 4.92 goals-against average. Despite losing its three close defenders to graduation, FSU returns the majority of its defense and looks toward a mix of freshmen and returners to fill in the gaps. With an experienced Kraemer in net, the Bobcats have a young defense in sophomore Bradley Jones, freshman Joey Lucas, and sophomore Josh Nicodemus. A duo of newcomers in Joe Cooper and David Grant will add depth in the backfield as well. While the defense may be on the younger side, there will be plenty of experience in the midfield as the duo of junior long-stick midfielders Alex Philips and captain Chris Santina will be joined by short-stick defensive middies junior Sterling Hardy and sophomore Quinn Western. Junior midfielder John Gamber will be a twoway player after combining his offensive (1g, 1a) and defensive (45 ground balls, 7 caused turnovers) prowess on the field. “We hope that off of face-off opportunities, we’ll get a lot of possession and play a lot of offense after the face-off,” noted Pearce, speaking on how the midfield battle will aid the young defense. And with two very experienced face-off guys, senior midfielder and captain Erik Geiser and junior midfielder Kyle Horak, Frostburg should be able to do just that. Geiser, a Second Team All-CAC selection, won 65.1 percent of his face-offs (162-of-249) and picked up a league-best 89 ground balls. He finished first in the CAC in ground balls per game (4.68). FSU has another

2016 Season Preview solid option at the X with Horak. He finished 110-of-177 and had 59 ground balls. Geiser (.651) and Horak (.621) finished 1-2 in the league in face-off winning percentage and Geiser was ranked nationally in face-off winning percentage (17th). Offensively, First Team All-CAC pick Rolland is the Bobcats’ top returning scorer (32 goals, 23 assists) and will be a force in the midfield along with junior Chase Cullison (8g, 7a) and sophomore Ethan Aikin (10g, 3a). Sophomore Keegan Colegrove (5g, 3a) gained experience last year, appearing in 15 games, while the transition of sophomore Ryan Baukhages from attack to midfield will be seen immediately. Adding depth will be senior Michael Kibler and sophomore Adam Gross, who combined for four goals and five assists last year. The threesome of senior attackmen Nick Stailey (42g, 4a), Blake Grudzien (13g, 3a) and captain Spenser Love (21g, 8a) will prove to be potent up front as they combined for 22 percent of the Bobcats’ offense a year ago. Stailey paced the Bobcats and was third in the conference with 42 goals. He also finished third in the league and 15th in the nation with a .483 shot percentage. Grudzien added depth last year and was overshadowed by the graduated class of Devin Colegrove, Chris Rios and Greg Bourne. This season, look for Grudzien to contribute and play a more active role up top. Love finished last season with 29 points and is third on the team in returners with 21 goals. He was named one of four captains in 2016 and will continue to show perseverance on the field after posting 33 ground balls last season. Sophomores Nate Collins and Nick Pontorno will provide depth on attack for the Bobcats. With plenty of options at all positions, FSU strengthened its schedule in order to fulfill its goal of heading to the NCAA Tournament. While the Bobcats play in one of the toughest DIII conferences, the Bobcats added three new opponents in out-of-league play. A quick glance at the USILA DIII Preseason Poll shows five of FSU’s opponents are either ranked (No. 5 Salisbury and No. 13 Ursinus) or receiving votes (Sewanee, Washington College, York (Pa.)). With the team and the schedule set, all that’s left is the game – FSU opens the 2016 season with a sevengame home stand beginning Saturday, February 20 when Bridgewater (Va.) comes to Bobcat Stadium for a 1:00 pm face-off.
