BYRNES HEAD COACH PLATTSBURGH STATE
Keith Byrnes enters his 15th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2016 and has led the Bobcats to a 144-100-27 overall record. He is the thirdwinningest coach in the 75-year history of the Frostburg men’s program. Over the last five seasons, Byrnes has guided the Bobcats to 47 wins, 14 ties and four appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament (2011-13 & 2015). FSU has posted 21 wins and seven ties in the Capital Athletic Conference and has earned five-consecutive berths in the CAC Tournament. In 2011, Byrnes was named the CAC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg to an 11-3-5 overall record and 4-2-2 league slate. Frostburg has emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the nation following the last two seasons. A year ago, the Bobcats finished eighth in the nation in save percentage (.883) after ranking second nationally (.909) following the ’14 campaign. Last fall, Frostburg was 21st in DIII in team goals against average (.64) and 35th in shutout percentage (0.50). FSU finished with nine shutouts, including four in the CAC. The Bobcats also opened the season with five shutouts in their first six games. At the other end of the field, Frostburg finished second in the CAC in points per game (5.94) and second in scoring offense (2.22). In 2014, Frostburg captured fifth DIII in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU, which finished 10-6-3 overall, posted 11 shutouts, including five in the CAC. The Bobcats played to a 13-7 overall mark behind a perfect 9-0 record at home in 2013. FSU posted six shutouts, including five at home and won the FSU Tournament Championship for the third-straight year. Byrnes’ team finished third in the CAC in scoring (2.0 gpg), fourth in goals (40) and fifth in assists (26). In 2012, Byrnes guided Frostburg State to a 10-0-3 start, one of just 11 NCAA Division III schools to open the season undefeated through the first 13 contests. FSU finished 2012 with a 12-3-4 overall record. The 2010 year marked the first for Frostburg as a member of the CAC, one of the nation’s toughest leagues. The Bobcats finished 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the CAC. Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eight-straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament
semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The Bobcats posted an overall record of 83-66-10 in Byrnes’ first eight years at the helm. During that stretch, 36 players earned All-AMCC honors and Byrnes was named the league’s coach of the year in 2008. In ‘08, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. In 2007, the Bobcats won six of their final eight games, including a run to the ECAC South Region Championship game. FSU also set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 16-0 defeat of Mt. Aloysius. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the part-time head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of postseason appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

HOBART Kevin McCarthy enters his fourth season as the top assistant coach with the Frostburg State University men’s soccer team in 2016. During his time with Frostburg, McCarthy has helped the Bobcats to 34 wins, including a pair of CAC Tournament and two ECAC Tournament appearances. In ‘14, the Bobcats finished 10-6-3 overall and finished second in the country in save percentage (.909), fifth in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU finished with 11 shutouts on the season and advanced to the CAC Tournament. In 2013, McCarthy helped lead the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record that included a perfect 9-0 record at home. Frostburg advanced to the CAC Tournament semifinals and won the FSU
Tournament, both for the third-straight season. McCarthy arrived at FSU after several coaching stints at the collegiate level. In 2012, McCarthy served as the men’s and women’s assistant coach at Ave Maria University. Prior to his stop in south Florida, he was an assistant coach at Manhattanville College from 2011-12. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, helping with team academics and assisted in event management. The Valiants finished 15-4-1 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. McCarthy received his first collegiate assistant position at William Smith College in the spring of 2011. He designed and assisted with training sessions for the women’s soccer team. While at Ave Maria, McCarthy also served as the head coach of the Florida Fire Juniors, an under 11 boys soccer team. A May ’11 graduate of Hobart College, McCarthy served as team captain and led the Statesmen to a 52-15-12 overall record with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and garnered All-Liberty League Second Team honors as a senior in 2010. In 2013, McCarthy played for and served as team captain of the Cape Coral Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). McCarthy received his NSCAA National Diploma in January 2012 and is pursuing his MBA at Frostburg State.

2016 Season Preview Over the last several years, it would be easy to see that Frostburg’s strength would be its defense and ability to shut down its opponent’s attack.
This season shouldn’t be any different with the return of a veteran
defensive presence, but 15th-year coach Keith Byrnes and his staff will once again try and alleviate the pressure on his backline with a young and talented group up front.

“Our expectations for our defense is always to be the focal point,”
said Byrnes. “That has clearly been our strength the last couple of seasons, especially with Hassan (Mostafa) in goal and the overall stability of our backline.”
“The offense did take a good step forward last fall and it created
and finished more opportunities than in the last couple of years,” added Byrnes. “However, we always expect our defense to keep us in games regardless of how the offense is performing.”
Two years ago, Frostburg finished second in the country in save
percentage, fifth in goals against average and 16th in shutout percentage. Last fall, FSU finished eighth in save percentage and 21st in GAA.
While the defensive numbers have stayed consistent during that
[ M O S TA FA ]
stretch, the offensive numbers have improved greatly.
The Bobcat attack jumped 3.10 points per game last season and
improved nearly 250 spots in the NCAA rankings in points per game from 2014 to last fall. The numbers in scoring offense look very similar as Frostburg doubled its scoring output and jumped nearly 250 spots nationally.
Byrnes and his staff want to continue that upward trend on the front
line that will ultimately improve the team’s overall record and chance for a CAC title.
“This year’s offense will have a slightly different look without our
leading scorer returning from last fall, but I do think the personnel that we have will be able to pick up the slack and hopefully can be as successful.”
While the offensive numbers have made drastic improvements, the
Bobcat defense will be spearheaded by Mostafa.
The reigning two-time First Team All-CAC keeper, Mostafa finished
his junior season ranked 21st in the country in save percentage (.860) and 48th in GAA (0.75). He posted five shutouts and allowed just 10 goals in over 1,400 minutes in net.

Mostafa enters his final season with 199 saves and 16 shutouts in
nearly 4,300 minutes. A ’14 NSCAA All-Region honoree, Mostafa will push for All-American honors in his last season. “I’d like to see Hassan max out in his last year and have his best
season yet,” added Byrnes.
Helping to anchor one of the nation’s top defensive units will also

2016 Season Preview and helped the team to nine shutouts and a team GAA of 0.64.
On the other end of the field, Casterline was third on the team with
nine points behind two goals and five assists.
“He’s an attacking nightmare for opposing defenses as he loves to
get forward,” noted Byrnes. “He’s a phenomenal two-way player and he
should prove that he’s one of the best backs in the conference.”
Senior Chris Herbert stepped in at centerback and had a good
season as a junior. Like Casterline, Herbert started all 18 games on the
backline and should help the defense improve this fall.
“We can always count on him because he has the ability to play
anywhere on the field and he can make an impact,” added Byrnes. “He has the athleticism, speed and smarts to adapt to any position. He’s a key piece
to our team and we will plug him in anywhere we need him.”
In the midfield, sophomores Hunter Jarmon and Kelvin Tata should
solidify starting spots and help setup the Bobcat attack.
Jarmon earned First Team All-CAC honors as a freshman after
finishing fourth with eight points behind two goals and four assists. Tata was second on the roster with 13 points behind six goals and one assist. He tied
for the team lead with three game-winning goals.
“We are expecting big things out of Hunter following his standout
freshman campaign,” added Byrnes. “He’s our field general and we expect
[ H E R B E RT ]
him to organize the guys around him this fall.”
“Kelvin definitely has all-conference potential because of his great
work ethic and speed,” said Byrnes. “He makes for a tough matchup against opposing defenses because of his pressure and ability to attack 1 v.
1.”
Up front, Frostburg will have to replace First Team All-CAC performer
Guy Nabo from a year ago and Byrnes and his staff believe two players are
set for the challenge.
Senior Jonathan Lippitt returns to the offensive lineup after playing in
15 games last fall with two goals and one assist.
“He’s returning healthy for the first time after some early injuries in
his career,” said Byrnes. “He’s a very technical player that has the ability to
unlock defenses with his playmaking ability.
“With the loss of Guy, we have spent a lot of time with Carvel
(Akuffo) and he had a good spring season,” said Byrnes. “We have made him the focal point of the offense.”
Last fall, Akuffo started 13 games and finished with two goals and
one assist.
Frostburg opens its season with the Frostburg State Tournament on
Sept. 2-3. The Bobcats kickoff the tournament with Catholic at 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
