Fletcher has guided the Bobcats to a total of 57 wins to go along with four CAC Tournament appearances and the 2014 FSU Tournament Title. She continues the rebuilding of her program as her teams have increased their win totals in each of the last four years. A year ago, she guided Frostburg to 17 victories, the most since 2010 and the program’s fourth appearance in the CAC Tournament during her tenure. FSU paced the CAC in total attacks (4,819) and digs (2,220), while finishing second in the league in digs per set (16.95), team assists (1,437), team attacks per set (36.79) and team kills (1,547). Frostburg turned a corner in 2014 after finishing 13-17 overall while capturing the FSU Tournament Title. The Bobcats, who won seven-straight matches over the middle of the season, were fourth in the conference in digs (1,730), sixth in kills (1,116) and sixth in assists (1,023). Fletcher’s 2013 Bobcat squad finished with seven wins and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the third-straight year. FSU snagged three big conference wins for a sixth-place finish in the CAC, while finishing sixth in the conference in blocks (157) and service aces (211). In 2012, the Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC regular-season standings and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the second-consecutive year. at the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT). Fletcher accomplished a lot in four years with the Wildcats, turning around a struggling women’s program while starting the men’s program from scratch in 2008. On the women’s side, Fletcher led SUNYIT to three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament appearances and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. She was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and won 61 total matches in the last three years. For the men, Fletcher guided the team to five wins in its inaugural season in 2008 while in 2010, the men’s squad led the nation in team and individual digs. This spring, the Wildcats made their first postseason appearance in the program’s brief history. In 2009, Fletcher was honored by the AVCA as one of thirty up-and-coming coaches under the age of 30 years old in the sport of volleyball at all collegiate levels. Prior to her time at SUNYIT, she served as a graduate assistant at Utica College for one year in 2006. Fletcher graduated in 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and pre-health from Washington & Jefferson College. She was a three-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2002. In 2005, W&J won the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the ECAC Tournament.

In her first year at the helm, Fletcher led the Bobcats to 15 wins and a berth in the CAC Tournament. The Bobcats posted five wins in league action and were 4-1 at Bobcat Arena. FSU led the league in digs (2,326) and finished second in digs per game (17.62). 2016 Season Preview The Frostburg State volleyball team has improved its win total in each of the last four seasons under the direction of sixth-year head coach Becky Fletcher and the momentum surrounding the program is easy to spot. The Bobcats appeared in the CAC Tournament a year ago for the fourth time in Fletcher’s five seasons at the helm.

“Our program is headed in a very positive direction and I see our win percent-

age continuing to increase over the next few years,” remarked Fletcher. “This team is stronger than we have been and still growing. We are in a great position right now to continue to build and improve the program with every class we bring in.”

Last year, the Bobcats ended the regular season in a three-way tie, finishing

fourth in the conference standings along with Marymount (Va.) and St. Mary’s (Md.). FSU posted an overall 17-18 record and a 5-4 record within the CAC. They earned the sixth seed in the conference tournament due to the tie-breaking results and Fletcher expects her 2016 Bobcats to improve on that seed and host a CAC Tournament playoff game.

“We want to make sure we are hosting a playoff game this season, it has

been awhile since that has happened.” Fletcher said. “Playing into November has been a growing theme within our team.”

The Bobcats lost just two seniors from last fall and return a wealth of talent

that includes a pair of All-Capital Athletic Conference selections, an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region honoree and an ECAC All-Star.

“I’m continuously impressed with our returning talent,” said Fletcher. “They

are strong, they are experienced and they have amazing chemistry together on and off the court. Most of these girls have been playing together for a few years. They really understand the sacrifices and dedications it takes to build a program. They have learned to push themselves and each other to work hard and leave it all on the court.”

The Frostburg junior class is loaded with talent and depth and will no doubt be

the strong point of the ’16 campaign for Fletcher’s squad. FSU returns its statistical leader in kills, assists, service aces, digs and blocks.

“Our junior class is dynamic. They bring power and ball control, as well as

a lot of competitiveness to our program. I am excited to see what they can do this season,” said Fletcher.

Fletcher’s roster also boasts a lot of incoming talent. She has eight freshman

and transfers that she feels will make an immediate impact on the program.

“I believe this incoming class is the most talented class I have brought in since

coaching at Frostburg,” Fletcher remarked. “They came in and picked up the speed of the game right away. They are also extremely competitive and show an immense amount of ball control. Most importantly, this incoming class has transitioned very smoothly with the rest of the team and it has been a lot of fun in preseason to coach and get to know these girls.”

Junior Naya Cheatem is coming off a career year and could make a push for

All-American honors after finishing her sophomore campaign with AVCA All-Region,

2016 Season Preview All-CAC and ECAC All-Star honors.

She will again look to pace the Bobcat attack after leading the CAC and finish-

ing third in all of NCAA Division III with 607 kills and 1,591 total attacks.

A York, Pa. native, Cheatem was second in the league in seventh in the country

with 4.63 kills per set. She was also 12th in the nation and paced the conference with 12.15 attacks per set and 11th nationally at 5.00 points per set.

“Naya brings a certain unmatched intensity to the game,” Fletcher said. “She

shows great leadership in challenging her teammates to make sure they are at the top of their game. I am excited to see how she develops even more as an all-around player this season.”

Cheatem isn’t just a force on attack as she finished second on the roster with

63 blocks and was fourth with 218 digs.

The Bobcats also return junior Zoe Harris to the front line attack who Fletcher is

counting on to aid Cheatem and bring some more power and strength to the offense.

“Zoe got so much stronger in the offseason,” Fletcher said. “Her off season

workouts are paying off in preseason. She also brings great leadership and competitiveness to the court.”

Harris finished her second season ranked third on the team behind 175 kills.

She added 75 digs and 27 blocks.

Junior Madelyn Torres has proved to be one of the top setters in the CAC after

appearing in all 65 matches since her arrival on campus prior to the ’14 season.

[ TORRES ]

Torres paced the CAC and was 11th in the country with 1,298 assists and she

was second in the league at 9.91 assists per set.

Torres tied for the team lead with 42 service aces, while contributing on the de-

fensive end as well as she finished third on the roster with 264 digs. She also posted 38 blocks.

“Madelyn is extremely consistent and driven,” remarked Fletcher. “We expect to

see her lead and balance our offense on both sides of the court.”

Junior Lindsey Scepura garnered Second Team All-CAC honors a year ago

after serving as the Bobcats’ top defensive specialist for the second-consecutive year.

A native of Ellicott City, Md., Scepura set the Frostburg record with an impres-

sive 729 digs and was third on the team with 27 service aces.

Scepura finished 14th in the country in digs after collecting 20 or more in 17

matches and 10 or more digs in all but two matches.

“I think Lindsey will continue to step up her game and be a powerful force for us

on defense,” said Fletcher. “She is our most consistent player and pushes herself and her teammates to always give it their all. She knew she had some competition on the team this year and she has more than risen to the challenge.”

Frostburg State is set to open its 2016 season at Stevenson on Sept. 1 at 7:00

pm and the Bobcats will open their home slate on Wednesday, September 7 with Penn State Altoona at 7:00 pm.

Ab out Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
