ENGSTER HEAD COACH LY N C H BU RG

Engster inherits a Frostburg squad that posted nine wins this past season and returns three of its top four scorers, two starting defenders and a nine-game winner in goal. The Bobcats finished second in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) in caused turnovers (183), fourth in draw controls (206), allowed the fourth fewest goals (171) and finished sixth in goals scored (194) and assists (70). Engster arrives at Frostburg after serving as the head women’s lacrosse coach at Sweet Briar since July 2013. The Vixens earned a spot on the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll in 2014 and 2015 and placed two players on the All-ODAC teams this past spring. The Vixens also had the Division III leader in caused turnovers. Prior to Sweet Briar, Engster was a graduate assistant at Salisbury University for two years, serving the program Exercise is Medicine and as a volunteer strength and conditioning coach. 2016 Season Preview A year ago, Frostburg posted nine wins and earned a trip to the CAC Tournament and first-year head coach Hayley Engster wants to build on last year’s momentum. The nine wins are the most for the Bobcats since the 2010 and Engster will bring a new energy to the team in hopes of pushing further into the CAC Tournament. The backbone of the ’16 version of the Bobcats will be 11 upperclassmen, highlighted by nine juniors. They are the strength of the team and cover every position on the field. They also provide a veteran leadership that should be hard to match among CAC teams as 10 of the 11 upperclassmen appeared in a combined 145 games with 102 starts a year ago. “The upperclassmen lead by example with their confidence and hustle on the field,” said Engster. “They also help create a close knit community among the team and their drive to success is infectious.” The group consists of seniors Marissa Howk and Jamie Twardowicz, along with juniors Taylor Mone, Megan Hart, Haley Hines, Alyssa Barlow, Ali Scrivener, Molly Hart, Emani Byrd and Dylan Teitelbaum. The returners also welcome in newcomer Logan Brady (junior). A closer look at the 11 upperclassmen also reveals the amount of talent and depth the group possesses. Last spring, they accounted for 83 goals, 27 assists, 139 ground balls, 57 draw controls, 67 caused turnovers and 113 saves. With those kinds of numbers, it’s easy to understand why Engster and her coaching staff believe the strength of her team lies with the upperclassmen. ----------Defense Five of the 10 returning upperclassmen reside on the defensive end of the field and account for 51 combined starts last spring. Howk, Byrd and Barlow boast the most returning experience on defense, while Teitelbaum started all 17 games in goal for the Bobcats last year. Howk has the most experience of any member of the Frostburg team having played in 48 games with 41 starts during her previous three seasons. She has caused 31 turnovers and scooped up 49 ground balls, while on the offensive end she has found the net 14 times with one assist. Byrd was named to the 2014 All-CAC Second Team after finishing her freshman campaign ranked fourth in the CAC with 31 caused turnovers. Last season, she added 18 ground balls, 21 caused turnovers, six goals and one assist. Barlow has appeared in 16 games in each of her first two seasons and looks to add to her 35 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers which she has collected during that span. Junior Ali Scrivener and sophomore Sam Cataldo appeared in combined 24 games with 11 starts last spring and both will look for an increased role this spring.

2016 Season Preview Teitelbaum will enter the season as the starting goalkeeper having totaled 188 saves in 27 games played. She dropped her goals against average by four goals over her first two seasons and looks to continue that trend in 2016. Attack Junior Megan Hart, sophomore Courtney Ridenour and freshman Morgan Cavey will form the top three at attack this spring for Engster’s squad. “The attack will be more spread out this year with several scoring options and I rely on the players to think on the field and make decisions on what is happening during the game,” added Engster. Megan Hart was the team’s fourth-leading scoring last spring totaling 25 goals and seven assists in 17 starts. She also contributed 32 points (21g, 11a) as a freshman in 2014. Ridenour made nine starts as a freshman and finished with eight goals and three assists, while Cavey was voted as the Most Improved Player as a junior at Chesapeake High School. The group will also have the tough task of replacing two-time All-CAC performer Mallory Brunett, who led the Bobcats in scoring a year ago.
[ BYRD ]
Midfield This year’s midfield line will be directed by junior Molly Hart, the Bobcats’ leading returning scorer from a year ago. She started all 17 games and poured in 28 goals and six assists. She also led the team with nine free-position goals to go along with 26 ground balls, 14 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers. At the draw, a trio of players will compete for time that includes Brady, Byrd and Hartley. Byrd has won 40 draw controls over her previous two years and was third on the roster last spring with 20 draws. Schedule The Frostburg State ’16 schedule will be highlighted by a pair of NCAA Tournament participants and the Bobcats will open their season in early March. Frostburg welcomes Alleghany this Saturday (March 5) with its season opener at Bobcat Stadium. A week later, the Bobcats dive into CAC action with a road contest at Marymount at 1:00 pm. A year ago, the CAC had four teams with 10 or more wins, behind NCAA Tournament participants, York (15-6) and Salisbury (14-4). The Spartans and Sea Gulls were ranked eighth and ninth, respectively in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Preseason Poll.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all
situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
