Head Coach Brian Parker B r ian

PARKER HEAD COACH FROSTBURG STATE

Brian Parker begins his 15th season as head coach of the Frostburg State University women's soccer program in 2016. The 1992 FSU graduate, is the winningest Bobcat women's soccer coach with a 191-68-33 record in his 14 seasons. Parker’s teams aren’t just winning on the field, but the Bobcats have won ninestraight NSCAA Team Academic honors and eight-straight NSCAA Team Ethics awards. Heading into the 2015 season, Parker was ranked 62nd among the NCAA’s all-time winningest coaches at all three NCAA levels (I, II & III) with a .721 winning percentage. He was also 27th among active NCAA Division III coaches with a .721 winning percentage and he is 34th all-time among both active and non-active coaches in winning percentage in Division III. Six years ago, the Bobcats joined the Capital Athletic Conference and they haven’t skipped a beat. Frostburg has posted 79 wins, including back-to-back 17-win seasons in 2010 (17-4-1) and 2011 (17-2-2). FSU has earned 34 wins in conference play, including the 2012 and 2014 CAC Tournament Championships. Over the last six years, Frostburg has posted a combined 56 shutouts, including 38 at home and 23 against CAC opponents. The Bobcats have twice finished second in the CAC regular-season standings (2010 & 2011) and have placed 27 players on the AllCAC teams. A year ago, Frostburg paced the CAC in several offensive categories, including points (126), goals (47), scoring offense (2.35) and points per game (6.3). FSU collected 10 wins and earned the third seed in the CAC Tournament. For the second time in three seasons, Frostburg made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament after capturing the 2014 CAC Tournament Title. The Bobcats knocked off top-seeded Christopher Newport in the semifinals of the tournament before shutting out Mary Washington, 2-0, in the title game at Bobcat Stadium. FSU led the conference in save percentage (.859), goals (48) and points (129). In 2013, Frostburg posted eight wins and advanced to the CAC Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season. FSU led the conference in scoring (2.3 gpg), finished second in both goals (41) and assists (32) and finished with the league’s fourth lowest goals against average (1.13). The Bobcats were the only CAC school to finish the season without a yellow or red card. In 2012, the Bobcats earned the program's seventh NCAA Tournament appearance after defeating Salisbury in the CAC Tournament Championship game. FSU led the CAC and finished 25th in the country at 3.15 goals per game, while posting a minuscule 0.77 goals against average. To cap the accolades, Adria Graham became the program's first-ever NSCAA All-American, while coach Parker was named the CAC Coach of the Year. Prior to 2010, FSU won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate

Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times under Parker's guidance (2002-05 and 2009). He also powered the Bobcats to the ECAC Tournament in three-consecutive seasons from 2006-2008. In 2009, Parker capped FSU's tenure in the AMCC in stellar fashion. Frostburg finished with a school record 18 wins (18-4 overall), scored a program record 90 goals, won 14 of 15 games during the middle part of the season, posted a 9-1 conference mark and advanced to the AMCC Championship game for the 11th-straight year. In the championship, FSU needed an overtime period to down Penn State Altoona as Lauren Russell drilled home a shot four minutes into the extra frame to send FSU to a 1-0 victory. In the NCAA Tournament, FSU lost to No. 9 ranked Otterbein 1-0 in the first round. Over the first seven years at the helm (2002-08), Parker built one of the most successful programs on the east coast. He led the Bobcats to four-consecutive AMCC Tournament Championships (2002-05) and four NCAA Tournaments (2002-05). In 2003, the Bobcats were chosen to host an NCAA match for the first time in school history and made the most of the opportunity, defeating Westminster 3-2 for their first NCAA Tournament victory in three tries. In 2008, Parker’s squad set school records in shutouts (15), save percentage (0.873), goals against average (0.35) and fewest goals allowed in a season (8). In 2007, Frostburg upset No. 18 ranked Johns Hopkins, 4-1, at Bobcat Stadium on a Friday night. Parker, a two-time AMCC Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004, led the Bobcats to 95 wins during that stretch, 35 wins in the AMCC and a school record 12-straight wins in the 2003 season. Parker coached 36 All-AMCC selections and six league Players of the Year, including three-time Great Lakes All-Region honoree Karen Kotofski. Parker has coached several individual school record holders, including Kotofski, the school's all-time leader in goals (83) and Lauren Russell, FSU's all-time leader in assists (39). Russell is also second in program history with 64 career goals. Prior to returning to western Maryland, Parker served as head girls soccer coach at Urbana High School in Frederick County, Md., since the school's opening in 1995. He guided the Hawks to an impressive 62-36-6 record and a pair of regional championships during his tenure. In just his second season at Urbana, Parker was named the Frederick County Coach of the Year after leading a team of freshmen and sophomores to the school's first-ever regional championship crown. The Hawks, who posted winning records in six of Parker's seven years, earned their second regional title in 2001. Parker is no stranger to FSU, as he was a goalkeeper for the Bobcats from 1987-89. He was a member of two Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament qualifiers, including the 1989

Assistant Coaches squad that won the ECAC South Region Championship. Parker then coached the FSU women's soccer team as a club sport from 1990-1992 and received his degree in social sciences with a teaching certification from FSU in 1992. He moved on to West Virginia University where he serve as a graduate assistant for the Mountaineer men's team for two years while earning a master's in political science. Parker, who has a USSF "B" coaching license and a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA, is on the coaching education staff of both the Maryland State Youth Soccer Assoc. (MSYSA) and the NSCAA and teaches in the FSU Minor in Coaching program. Parker is also frequently on the Maryland Olympic Development

Program Staff and led the Maryland 1990 Girls team to the Region I Tournament championship in 2005 and coached the 1994 girls in 2009/10 and the 1996 girls in 2011 to appearances in the Region I Tournament Championship game. Parker was a founder and staff coach with the Frederick United Soccer Club (now FC Frederick) until his return to FSU. He and his wife, Karen, a 1993 FSU graduate and native of Frostburg, have

two children — Elise (15) and Matt (13).

Brooke

LONGO ASSISTANT COACH Frostburg State

Brooke Longo has returned to the sideline for the Frostburg State women's soccer program as an assistant coach for the 2016 season. Longo returns to FSU after garnering All-Capital Athletic Conference honors in each of her four years as a student-athlete for the Bobcat women’s squad. She was a three-time Second Team All-CAC award winner while capping her senior season as a firstteam selection. A midfielder, Longo helped the Bobcats to 45 wins during her

tenure with four appearances in the CAC Tournament, including two trips to the NCAA Tournament. She made a total of 77 starts and finished her career with 13 goals and 11 assists. She also earned Second Team All-ECAC and NSCAA Third Team All-South Atlantic Region honors as a senior. Longo graduated this past May with her bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science.

Glen

BUTLER ASSISTANT COACH Canterbury

Glen Butler will serve as the goalkeeper coach for both the Frostburg men's and women's soccer teams for the 2016 season. Butler joins the Bobcat programs after serving as a professional soccer coach for the UK Elite Soccer club in Maryland and Virginia. He was the head of the UK Elite Petite Program for Maryland and assisted with the training of the goalkeepers for UKE and FC USA. Prior to UKE, Butler was a coach for the Total Football Academy in the United Kingdom, serving as both the head and goalkeepers coach for the U18-19 men’s and women’s teams. He graduated from Canterbury Christchurch University with his bachelor’s degree in physical education and sport & exercise

science in May 2012. He was president and founder of the athletic society at Christchurch and was both a player and coach for the men’s first team. He also coached the men’s second team and the women’s first team and all three squads captured league titles in the British University Championships. During that same time, Butler was the head coach for the U17 and U18 girls team for the Alletis Angels Football Club. Butler holds a UEFA B Professional Coaching License as well as a NSCAA Level 6 Coaching Certificate.

2016 Season Preview There is no doubt that Frostburg head coach Brian Parker will have his work cut out for him as his women’s soccer team heads into the 2016 season. Parker’s squad will have to replace seven seniors that accounted for a combined 114 starts last year alone.

Parker is confident, however, that the talent he has returning

up and down in the roster will overcome the losses and carry Frostburg back to the CAC title.

“To be honest, it feels really good because we had a terrific

spring season,” said Parker when asked about his returning talent. “Clearly we had a little smaller roster size than normal in the spring. We played our spring game against Shippensburg and we were terrific.”

“I like the young talent on our team very much,” added Parker.

“It’s a classic rebuilding year and we will be making changes in the lineup obviously, but we have a very talented and committed returning group.”

Parker, now entering his 15th season at the helm, was quick to

point out that his Bobcats return key starters at every spot on the field.

“We basically return our entire starting back line,” added Parker.

“The defense is a very good and a very solid group.”

[ BELL ]

“We don’t have a large senior class when you compare the

2015 and the 2016 seasons. Last year, our seven seniors were coming off the ’14 CAC Championship and the expectations were very high and there was lot more pressure. We don’t feel the same pressure as we did a year ago and that’s a positive.”

A season ago, Frostburg paced the CAC and finished 84th

in the nation in points per game (6.30), while allowing just 1.449 goals per contest. In the Bobcats’ seven defeats, however, they lost by two or more goals in five of those matches and were shutout twice.

Parker feels with the return of three starters on defense and

a goalkeeper that played in 11 games last fall that his unit will be able to stifle the opponent’s attack and keep Frostburg in more games.

“Top to bottom I would say this year’s group is the most skillful

and talented group overall I’ve maybe ever had during my tenure. Every single player is comfortable and confident with the ball.”

“Most of our starting lineup could play multiple positions. I think

our play on the field will be more attractive to watch because we have such a skillful group overall.”

2016 Season Preview

A big reason for Parker’s confidence is the emergence of

center midfielder Melanie Bell (junior) who should replace four-time All-CAC performer Brooke Longo. The coaching staff expects Bell to have a monster season and improve on her five goals and two assists from her sophomore campaign.

“She had a great sophomore season and will become more of

a leader and will dictate a lot more of the play on the field,” said Parker. “She was involved in a lot of our scoring plays and often matched up with some tough opponents.”

Versatile sophomore Danielle Ferris is also set for a breakout

season in her second as a Bobcat. She finished with five goals and one assist as a freshman and should see an increase in her numbers as she becomes a larger part of the attack.

“Dani came on for us last year as a midfielder and in the back,”

added Parker. “She had a fantastic spring and will become a regular player in the middle and up front this fall.”

Senior Jessi Martz and sophomore Haley Dalphon will lead

the charge up front for Parker’s squad. The duo combined for four goals and two assists a year ago.

“They are terrific forwards that have plenty of experience,” noted

Parker. “Haley has rebounded from last year’s injury and she has

[ MA RT Z ]

very real potential as a goal scorer. Jessi is going to have a great senior year.”

Leading the stellar defensive unit will be juniors Alyssa Malanik,

Kourtney McClain and Lia Kelly. The group helped Frostburg to eight shutouts and a 1.16 goals against average last fall. Malanik was a First Team All-CAC performer and First Team ECAC All-Star as a defender last year, while Parker and his staff expect McClain and Kelly to push for all-conference honors as well.

Kelsi Folch is entering her senior campaign and Parker is

excited for the offensive punch that Folch can create for the attack. She could secure a midfield starting position and improve on her numbers from last fall.

In net, Parker has a competition between sophomore Rhianna

Lapen and senior Karen Belteton. Lapen played in 11 games last fall and finished with 19 saves in 365 minutes, while Belteton made two saves in five games.

“The two are very good, competitive keepers that will compete

for the starting job,” said Parker. “It will be interesting to see how it plays out in preseason.”

Frostburg State opens its season at home on Thursday, Sept. 1

with Bridgewater at 7:00 pm.
