LUY HEAD COACH GETTYSBURG

Dale Luy begins his seventh year as the head coach of the Frostburg State University men’s and women’s cross country teams in 2016. The Bobcat men registered five top-10 finishes, including a runner-up showing at the FSU Invitational in early October. The Bobcats capped the season with a seventh-place showing at the CAC Championships and 32nd place at the NCAA Mideast Regional. The FSU women’s team captured three-consecutive top-10 finishes in October that were highlighted by a second-place finish at the FSU Invitational in early October. The Bobcats also took eighth at the Hood College Open and ninth at the CAC Championships. Luy’s women’s cross country team highlighted the 2014 season by winning both the Aaron Slafka Invitational at PittGreensburg and the Hood College Open. Frostburg finished with four top-five team finishes, including a fifth-place showing at the CAC Championships. Frostburg was also named a Division III All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA after carrying a 3.43 GPA. The Bobcat men captured eighth place at the CAC Championships and 38th at the NCAA Mideast Regional to round out their 2014 campaign. Frostburg’s best finish was third at the Aaron Slafka Invitational. In 2013, Luy led the Bobcat men’s team to a fifth-place finish at the CAC Championships, while Pat Mead earned First Team All-CAC honors. FSU totaled three top-five finishes in seven meets and capped the season with 34th place at the NCAA Mideast Championships. The Bobcat women’s team capped the year with four top-10 finishes in seven meets and earned eighth place at the CAC Championships. In 2012, Luy guided the Frostburg men’s and women’s cross country teams to fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively, at the CAC Championships. Both Gavin Caupp and Pat Mead earned Second Team All-CAC honors after finishing 14th and 15th at the league championships. The FSU men capped the season with a 43rd-place showing at the NCAA Mideast Regional. For the second-straight season, the Bobcat women grabbed sixth place at the CAC Championships. Two weeks later, Frostburg posted 44th at the NCAA Mideast Regional. In 2011, both the Bobcat men’s and women’s teams highlighted their seasons with a pair of sixth-place finishes at the CAC Championships.

On the men’s side, the Bobcats earned a pair of sixth-place finishes on the year. In an early season test at the future site of the CAC Championships, the Bobcats captured sixth at the Coach Achtzehn Classic at York (Pa.). Five weeks later, the Bobcats repeated with sixth place at the conference championship meet. Five runners capped the season by competing at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Like the men, the FSU women captured a pair of sixthplace finishes on the season. They captured sixth at the Shippensburg Univ. Alumni Open that kicked off the fall season. The Bobcats capped the year with another sixth-place showing, this time at the CAC Championships. Under wintery conditions, senior Anne Patron captured runner-up honors and was named to the All-CAC team. A week after the CAC’s, four runners represented Frostburg at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Luy guided the Bobcats to a successful first year in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2010. The Bobcat women's team captured fourth at the league championships while Anne Patron and Jessica O'Neil went on to earn All-CAC honors and represent FSU at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet. On the men's side, the Bobcats grabbed a pair of top10 finishes during the season before finishing sixth at the CAC Championships. Frostburg capped the season with a 36th-place showing at the NCAA Regional meet. Luy brought a combined 19 years of experience coaching cross country to FSU. He served as the head coach at both Elizabethtown College for 12 years and Lower Dauphin High School for seven. His Elizabethtown teams set school records for wins in a season while his women's team twice earned Middle Atlantic Conference runner-up honors. Individually, Luy's runners have earned Division III Mideast All-Region honors as well as a prestigious Rhodes Scholar recipient. At Lower Dauphin, his teams won two MidPenn Divisional Championships and the MidPenn class-AAA Championship Luy is no stranger to FSU athletics as he has served as the school’s head track & field coach for the last nine years. Coach Luy has accomplished a great deal in just nine years. He has guided three of his student-athletes to All-American status, led the women’s team to a ninth place finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships and a first place showing at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships that same year. During the 2011-12 indoor season, Luy was named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Coach of the Year after guiding the Bobcats to a runner-up showing at the league

2016 Season Preview Stanton Higham to return to form, while sophomore Zachary Talbert, Phillip Hogan, Jonathan Walton and Matt Whitley will fight for a spot in the top five finishers after improving drastically since their freshman seasons. Talbert posted a 17th-place finish at Westmoreland, while Hogan was 32nd at the Frostburg Invitational. Whitley registered a top-10 finish at Westmoreland after he finished 10th as FSU's second runner.

"All five have proven that if you put the work in, you

can get better," added Luy. "Their time trial efforts this preseason are significantly faster than last year."

Four newcomers will also figure into the mix this fall.

Sophomore Tom Burklow, junior Brady Dumonchelle, freshman Timmy Wolodkin and freshman Lorenzo Wilson have had great preseasons and are being counted on to contribute to the top-five.

"The challenge for the men's team is that our 1-18

runners are better than last year," said Luy. "The team as a whole is better. In order to be better, we need to replace five seniors that consistently finished in the top seven." impressive," noted Luy.

But unlike the women, the men are nearly a 50/50 split

as they welcome back 10 runners from a year ago.

"We have brought in a good amount of new people,

but those newcomers have seamlessly fit in with the returners," said Luy. "That blend has helped with the transition during practice."

Without a doubt the two leaders of this year's men's

team will be sophomore Robert Romano and senior Xavier Alvarez.

Romano was FSU's top finisher during his freshman

campaign as he led the Bobcats in five of six races. He opened his collegiate career with a win at Westmoreland and took fourth at the Frostburg Invitational.

Alvarez heads into his senior campaign with plenty of

momentum after finishing as Frostburg's second runner in four meets, including Shippensburg, St. Mary's, Dickinson and the NCAA Mideast Regional. He was FSU's top finisher at the CAC Championships.

A senior and four sophomores will be challenging

for top-seven spots. The coaches are looking for senior
