BOERMAN HEAD COACH McDANIEL
It was announced on Thursday (July 20) that Kaitlin Boerman will return to the Frostburg State sidelines this season as the head coach of the Bobcat field hockey program following her hiring from a national search. Boerman, the 16th coach in the 47-year history of the program, served as an assistant coach at FSU during the 2013 season. She inherits a team loaded with a young, talented roster that won five games last season with four shutouts. Boerman returns to FSU after serving as an assistant coach at the Catholic University of America for the last
year. The Cardinals won 10 games, advanced to the Landmark Conference Tournament semifinals, placed five players on the all-conference teams and finished with one All-American. She assisted with all facets of the program including recruiting, scheduling, practices and gameday preparations and the team’s budget. For two years prior to CUA, Boerman served as the graduate assistant coach at McDaniel College and served as the interim head coach for a five-month stretch in 201415. During those two years, the Green Terror won a combined 17 games, including eight in the Centennial Conference with an appearance in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament in 2014. She served as the program’s lead recruiter and was promoted to the interim head coach from November 2014 through March 2015. For the 2013 season, Boerman made her first stop at Frostburg and helped the Bobcats to seven wins with five shutouts. She worked specifically with the goalkeepers and defensive unit and FSU led the Capital Athletic Conference in saves (204) and finished second with 30 defensive saves. She also served as Frostburg’s top recruiter and assisted with the video assessment of upcoming opponents and postgame scouting. Prior to Frostburg, Boerman was an assistant coach at Moravian College for two years (2011-13), helping the Greyhounds to 17 total wins. Outside of her collegiate experience, Boerman has coached the Green Turtle Fells Point Field Hockey Club since November 2014, served as the USA Field Hockey Futures Site Coordinator since February 2017 and coached at the Nike Field Hockey Camp for seven years (2009-16). She earned both her bachelors and masters degrees from McDaniel. She earned her bachelors in exercise and sport science in 2011 and her masters in exercise science in 2016.

WYANT ASSISTANT COACH M A R Y WA S H I N G T O N
Travis Wyant begins his second season on the Frostburg field hockey staff in 2017. He will work with newly appointed head coach Kaitlin Boerman. In 2016, the Bobcats won five games and scored a seasonhigh 11 goals against Notre Dame (Md.). Senior goalkeeper Jacqueline Gover made 83 saves and held a 2.38 goals against average. Wyant coached a pair of 2016 All-CAC selections in Gover and forward Taylor Bowen. Wyant arrived at Frostburg after serving as a student assistant coach at the University of Mary Washington for two seasons. He gained experience in recruiting, game strategy and also post game breakdown and analysis. In his two years
with UMW, the Eagles finished with a 28-10 record and ranked 10th in the nation in 2015. Along with assisting with field hockey, Wyant also served as a student assistant for the Mary Washington women’ lacrosse team for the past two seasons. He developed game day and post-game graphics for UMW women’s lacrosse social media accounts as well as assisted with game day operations and statistics. He earned his bachelor’s degree in english with a concentration in writing from Mary Washington in the spring of 2016 and plans to pursue a master’s degree while attending Frostburg State University.

SIMS ASSISTANT COACH B R I D G E WA T E R
Marisa Sims begins her first season as a graduate assistant with the Frostburg field hockey team in 2017. Sims played on the Bridgewater field hockey team from 2014-16, earning All-ODAC Academic honors in all three seasons. She was also named to the ODAC All-Tournament Field Hockey Team in 2015. She spent the summer of 2017 as an activity leader at Education First, where she supervised children ages 10-17 in various activities in the New York City area. Sims graduated in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in communications, technology & culture and a minor in coaching from Bridgewater College. She also spent a year studying

abroad at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2016, Sims served as an assistant coach at the Brookfield Swim Club. She taught the fundamentals of swimming to children and assisted in the supervision of coaches throughout the season. She was an academic coach at Bridgewater in 2015. Sims helped students with notetaking and study tools to ensure all of their assignments were completed. Sims was a photographer for the Bridgewater athletic communications department from December 2013 to May 2014. Sims will be pursuing a master’s degree from Frostburg State University.

at the helm, as Kaitlin Boerman was hired as the 16th head field hockey coach in program history in July. The Bobcats return four seniors in Elizabeth Davis (defense), Ivy Meissner (midfield), Savannah Neubert (defense) and Nicole Leighty (goalkeeper) who will power the Bobcats this season. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to call Frostburg home once again,” Boerman said upon her hiring. “From the moment I stepped on this beautiful campus I knew there was something special about this place and felt an instant connection.” Frostburg will look to take the next step as a program after concluding the 2016 season with a 5-13 overall record. The Bobcats will have to replace a pair of graduating seniors who were named All-CAC selections in 2016. Taylor Bowen (forward) tallied four goals and 10 points in 18 starts last season, while Jacqueline Gover (goalkeeper) paced the conference with 83 saves in 2016. “I coached Bowen, Gover, and Nava in their freshmen seasons as an assistant here at Frostburg so I am quite aware of the impact they’ve had on this program,” Boerman said. “They will be missed; however, this current 2017 team will carry on their passionate play.” Boerman and the coaching staff are expecting the 12 returners to lead the way this season, but are also excited about the five newcomers that will begin their Bobcat

careers in the fall. “The staff change and strong incoming freshmen class has ignited a spark in this veteran group,” Boerman said. “The team has proven to the coaching staff that they’re ready to work hard and get outside their comfort zones in order to progress as a program. The coaching staff is excited to announce seniors Liz Davis and Ivy Meissner will be our 2017 team captains. Their leadership on the field will undoubtedly be key to our success this season.” Juniors Holly Van Wie, Molly Pickard and Samantha Schaffer will provide a steady

2017 Season Preview presence among the Bobcat core of forwards. “Our attacking presence has been one of the main points of emphasis. This is something the team struggled with previ-

ously but we’re looking to make it one of our strengths moving forward,” Boerman said. “Both veterans and newcomers on the forward line have been putting in quality work around the cage. The team will look to build off their persistence in order to become a high-scoring offense.” In the midfield, Meissner will provide a veteran presence after starting in 18 games in 2016. She tallied her lone assist of the season against Virginia Wesleyan last September. Juniors Ashleigh Myers and Rosalie Friedman will also contribute after the two saw an increase in playing time during the 2016 season. “Ivy Meissner will lead a very young but talented midfield. Our freshmen midfielders have displayed great fitness and growth with their hockey IQ and skills this preseason,” Boerman said. “The midfield line will play a huge part in supporting our attacking play in this 2017 campaign.” Perhaps the deepest and most experienced unit on the field is the defense, led by Davis and Nuebert. As a team, Frostburg posted four shutouts and four defensive saves in 2016. Juniors Cara Morrell and Olivia Devine also return to the Bobcat defense in 2017. “Our defense is absolutely solid. Liz Davis, Savannah Neubert, and Cara Morrell each have great poise and a strong presence in the backfield,” Boerman added. “Their overall knowledge of the game and leadership have been instrumental in helping our program grow.” Leighty and sophomore Sierra Smizer will compete for the starting goalkeeper job in 2017 after combining to play in five games a season ago. “The goalkeeper competition has been an exciting one to watch,” Boerman noted. “We are so happy to have Leighty back for her senior year because she is such a reliable keeper and Smizer has been making some great stops between the pipes.” The Bobcats won three of their five games at home last season, and hope to use the friendly confines of Bobcat Stadium to their advantage again this year with a 13 home contests.

About Frostburg State
From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
