BYRNES HEAD COACH PLATTSBURGH STATE

Keith Byrnes enters his 16th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2017 and has led the Bobcats to a 153-110-28 overall record. He is the secondwinningest coach in the 76-year history of the Frostburg men’s program. Over the last six seasons, Byrnes has guided the Bobcats to 56 wins, 15 ties and four appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament (2011-13 & 2015). FSU has posted 25 wins and eight ties in the Capital Athletic Conference and has earned five berths in the CAC Tournament. In 2011, Byrnes was named the CAC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg to an 11-3-5 overall record and 4-2-2 league slate. Last fall, the Bobcats finished with nine wins against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Frostburg posted five shutouts, earned its fifth trip to the CAC Tournament and defeated Penn State Harrisburg, 3-2, in the opening round. Frostburg emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the nation following the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In ‘15, the Bobcats finished eighth in the nation in save percentage (.883) after ranking second nationally (.909) following the ’14 campaign. In 2015, Frostburg was 21st in DIII in team goals against average (.64) and 35th in shutout percentage (0.50). FSU finished with nine shutouts, including four in the CAC. The Bobcats also opened the season with five shutouts in their first six games. At the other end of the field, Frostburg finished second in the CAC in points per game (5.94) and second in scoring offense (2.22). In 2014, Frostburg captured fifth DIII in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU, which finished 10-6-3 overall, posted 11 shutouts, including five in the CAC. The Bobcats played to a 13-7 overall mark behind a perfect 9-0 record at home in 2013. FSU posted six shutouts, including five at home and won the FSU Tournament Championship for the third-straight year. Byrnes’ team finished third in the CAC in scoring (2.0 gpg), fourth in goals (40) and fifth in assists (26). In 2012, Byrnes guided Frostburg State to a 10-0-3 start, one of just 11 NCAA Division III schools to open the season undefeated through the first 13 contests. FSU finished 2012 with a 12-3-4 overall record. The 2010 year marked the first for Frostburg as a member of the CAC, one of the nation’s toughest leagues. The Bobcats finished 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the CAC. Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eight-straight

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The Bobcats posted an overall record of 83-66-10 in Byrnes’ first eight years at the helm. During that stretch, 36 players earned All-AMCC honors and Byrnes was named the league’s coach of the year in 2008. In ‘08, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. In 2007, the Bobcats won six of their final eight games, including a run to the ECAC South Region Championship game. FSU also set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 16-0 defeat of Mt. Aloysius. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the part-time head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of postseason appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

BUTLER ASSISTANT COACH CANTERBURY

Glen Butler will begin his second year as the goalkeeper coach for both the Frostburg men’s and women’s soccer teams for the 2017 season. In 2016, Butler coached goalkeepers Hassan Mostafa and Rhianna Lapen. Mostafa was named to the All-CAC First Team and was selected to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Second Team. Lapen finished 2016 among the conference leaders in almost every statistical category, as the Bobcat women’s team advanced to the CAC Championship. Butler joined the Bobcat programs after serving as a professional soccer coach for the UK Elite Soccer club in Maryland and Virginia. He was the head of the UK Elite Petite Program for Maryland and assisted with the training of the goalkeepers for UKE and FC USA. Prior to UKE, Butler was a coach for the Total Football Academy in the United Kingdom, serving as both the head and goalkeepers coach for the U18-19 men’s and women’s teams. Butler holds a UEFA B Professional Coaching License as well as a NSCAA Level 6 Coaching Certificate.

2017 Season Preview

Defense has been the backbone of the Frostburg men’s

soccer program for the last four years, but the 2017 season could see a shift to the front line as Bobcat head Keith Byrnes and his staff return some viable talent at forward and midfield.

Last fall, the Bobcats posted some of the CAC’s best marks

in saves (101), save percentage (.789) and goals allowed (27) and Frostburg collected a total of six shutouts in 20 games in 2016.

The coaching staff would like to keep those impressive

defensive numbers and use a veteran offensive attack to push the team towards a CAC Championship.

“We are going to be very young in the back and in goal, but

that group is working hard so far this preseason,” said Byrnes. “We would love for our defense to be our backbone again this

[ BA S H A M ]

year, but the returning talent definitely lies on the offensive end.”

While the defense will be led by junior Brett Basham, the veteran leadership upfront will be led via the return of seniors Jonathan Lippitt (midfield) and Rodrigo Valenzuela (midfield), and Ernie Williams (midfield). Williams will be invaluable as the midfield leader as Byrnes and his staff see Williams as the engine of the squad. Sophomore Josh McRobie returns after pacing the team in scoring last fall.

“Basham has to step up and be our leader on

defense,” added Byrnes. “Vocally, he needs to keep the defense organized and if he does that well, hopefully the goalkeepers don’t face too much this season.”

Despite a swarm of late-season injuries last fall,

the Bobcats still earned a first-round win in the CAC Tournament over Penn State Harrisburg (3-2) and

[ WI LLI AMS ]

narrowly lost to eventual league-champion Christopher Newport in the semifinals.

2017 Season Preview

Byrnes and his staff are confident that the returning talent

mixed with the talented, 14-member incoming class will carry Frostburg to its first CAC Championship game appearance. Basham garnered Second Team All-CAC honors as a sophomore last season and will return as the leader on Frostburg’s defensive unit. He was one of just two Bobcats to start all 20 games and helped lead the Bobcat defense to a 1.32 goals against average.

A key loss from the last four years that Byrnes and his

staff will have to overcome is the graduation of four-year starting keeper Hassan Mostafa who ended his career with three-straight First Team All-CAC awards. In net, Mostafa registered 36 wins with 20 shutouts during his time as a Bobcat.

At the other end of the field, the Bobcats return several of

their top scorers from last year’s club that scored 36 goals and finished fifth in the CAC in scoring offense (1.80).

McRobie paced FSU in scoring last fall with 17 points

[ MO R RI S ]

behind seven goals and three assists. McRobie, who started just nine games, opened his collegiate career with a hat trick in Frostburg’s 5-0 blanking of St. Vincent.

Valenzuela was the team’s third-leading scorer as a junior

with five goals and one assist. A tall, rangy midfielder, Valenzuela found the net twice with one assist as Frostburg opened league play in late-September with a 5-0 shutout of Wesley. He is a consistent on the ball player.

Lippitt returns for his fifth season with the Bobcats and

Byrnes is hopeful that he is fully healthy. Last fall, Lippitt started 14 of 17 games and provides consistency in the middle.

Williams was the third Bobcat to garner All-CAC honors a

year ago after he was placed on the second team. Williams, a quick and agile midfielder, scored two goals with two assists in 20 games.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
