FLETCHER HEAD COACH Wash. & Jeff.
Rebecca Fletcher enters her seventh year as the head volleyball coach at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2017. Fletcher has guided the Bobcats to a total of 69 wins to go along with four CAC Tournament appearances and the 2014 FSU Tournament Title. Frostburg has placed four players on the All-CAC teams under Fletcher’s tutelage. Last fall, Frostburg posted 12 overall wins, including a pair in league action. The Bobcats finished fifth in the league in digs (1,891), sixth in total blocks (174) and Naya Cheatem was named an All-CAC honoree for the second-straight year. In mid-September, Cheatem registered her 1,000th kill in a sweep of Chatham. In 2015, she guided Frostburg to 17 victories, the most since 2010 and the program’s fourth appearance in the CAC Tournament during her tenure. FSU paced the CAC in total attacks (4,819) and digs (2,220), while finishing second in the league in digs per set (16.95), team assists (1,437), team attacks per set (36.79) and team kills (1,547). Frostburg turned a corner in 2014 after finishing 13-17 overall while capturing the FSU Tournament Title. The Bobcats, who won seven-straight matches over the middle of the season, were fourth in the conference in digs (1,730), sixth in kills (1,116) and sixth in assists (1,023). Fletcher’s 2013 Bobcat squad finished with seven wins and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the third-straight year. FSU snagged three big conference wins for a sixth-place finish in the CAC, while finishing sixth in the conference in blocks (157) and service aces (211). In 2012, the Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC regularseason standings and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the second-consecutive year. Frostburg, which posted five wins on the season, finished fifth in the league in assists (919), kills (1,003), blocks (246) and digs (1,651). In her first year at the helm, Fletcher led the Bobcats to 15 wins and a berth in the CAC Tournament. The Bobcats posted five wins in league action and were 4-1 at Bobcat Arena. FSU led the league in digs (2,326) and finished second in digs per game (17.62). Fletcher joined the Frostburg coaching staff after a fouryear stint as both the head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at the State University of New York Institute of
Technology (SUNYIT). Fletcher accomplished a lot in four years with the Wildcats, turning around a struggling women’s program while starting the men’s program from scratch in 2008. On the women’s side, Fletcher led SUNYIT to three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament appearances and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. She was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and won 61 total matches in the last three years. For the men, Fletcher guided the team to five wins in its inaugural season in 2008 while in 2010, the men’s squad led the nation in team and individual digs. This spring, the Wildcats made their first postseason appearance in the program’s brief history. In 2009, Fletcher was honored by the AVCA as one of thirty up-and-coming coaches under the age of 30 years old in the sport of volleyball at all collegiate levels. Prior to her time at SUNYIT, she served as a graduate assistant at Utica College for one year in 2006. Fletcher graduated in 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and pre-health from Washington & Jefferson College. She was a three-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2002. In 2005, W&J won the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the ECAC Tournament.

Graf arrives in Frostburg after a very successful playing career at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. As a senior in 2016, Graf led the Seahawks with a team-high 483 kills and a rate of 4.16 kills per set. In 2015, Graf placed second on the Seahawks squad in both kills with 247 and digs with 324. She was named to the All-CAC second team as a junior. Prior to St. Mary’s (Md.) Graf spent two seasons as the starting libero at the United States Naval Academy and
was named to the All-Patriot League second team in 2014 as a sophomore. Graf also brings an impressive coaching background to FSU from her time at both St. Mary’s (Md.) and the Naval Academy. Following her Seahawks playing career, Graf served as a coach’s assistant at St. Mary’s (Md.) from January of 2017 until May where she helped to organize and run team practices as well as took part in the recruitment of athletes. She also worked as an assistant court coach for the Naval Academy volleyball camp in July of 2017 where she had the opportunity to work one-on-one with young athletes to develop their skills. 2017 Season Preview A quick glance at the 2017 Frostburg volleyball roster is all that is needed to understand what the overwhelming strength of this year’s team will be. Seven seniors headline a talented roster and they have the potential to finish the season as the top senior class in the 23-year history of the program. “We have a very athletic and experienced senior class that already hold numerous school records and I expect them to break more records early on in the fall,” said head coach Becky Fletcher. “We are also glad to have Lindsey Scepura (senior) back after missing over 10 games last season.” A year ago, Frostburg posted 12 wins and narrowly missed a spot in the CAC Tournament, despite finishing as one of the top schools in the league statistically. FSU finished fifth in the conference in total attacks (3,915), second in digs per set (18.36), fifth in team digs (1,891) and seventh in assists (1,041). “This year’s team is deeper than I’ve had at Frostburg,” added Fletcher. “There isn’t much of a drop off between the starters and reserve players.
[ CHEATEM ]
We have a lot of ball control this year and I feel like the serving and passing game is the strongest I’ve ever coached.” Of the seven seniors, six have been with the Bobcats for three previous seasons and have totaled 42 wins with an appearance in the CAC Tournament in 2015. Seniors Jessica Bugtong, Naya Cheatem, Karli Grimes, Zoe Harris, Sabrina Roberts, Lindsey Scepura and Madelyn Torres suit up for their final years in a Bobcat uniform and will push Frostburg towards another spot in the CAC Tournament. While seniors are typically important to the success of any team because of their leadership and experience, this group of seniors especially sticks out on the stats sheet because of their impressive careers thus far. Cheatem is the most decorated volleyball player in several years as she earned her second-consecutive First Team All-CAC award following her junior campaign. She finished 58th nationally in kills per set (3.70) and 100th in points per set (4.01) and those numbers ranked her among the top players in the conference.

2017 Season Preview In mid-September, Cheatem became the eighth player in program history to register 1,000 kills and she enters her final season with 1,156. As a sophomore, Cheatem smacked 607 kills, the third-highest single-season mark in school history. Scepura has been one of the league’s top defensive specialists throughout her career. Last fall, she was second on the team with 308 digs despite missing 11 matches, seven in league play. As a sophomore in 2015, she posted 689 digs, good for 14th in Division III. That fall, she earned Second Team All-CAC honors. She enters her final season ranked second all-time in career digs with 1,504. Torres has led the Bobcats in assists in each of her three seasons and will push for all-league awards as a senior. Two seasons ago, Torres led the Bobcats and the CAC and finished 11th in the country in assists with 1,298. Bugtong, Harris and Roberts have also been with the Bobcat program for the past three years.
[ TORRES ]
Last fall, Bugtong finished second on the roster with 41 blocks, to go along with 52 kills, 45 digs and six service aces. Harris, an All-CAC javelin thrower for the FSU track & field team, was second on the team with 203 kills last fall. She added 76 digs and 31 blocks. As a sophomore two years ago, Roberts led Frostburg and finished seventh with 84 blocks. Grimes has been a Bobcat for two previous seasons and has totaled 144 kills and 466 digs. The Bobcats open their season at the St. Vincent Tournament against host St. Vincent at 3:00 pm on Friday, September 1.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
