HEAD COACH BRIAN PARKER
BRIAN PARKER HEAD COACH FROSTBURG STATE Brian Parker begins his 16th season as head coach of the Frostburg State University women's soccer program in 2017. The 1992 FSU graduate is the winningest Bobcat women's soccer coach with a 201-78-34 record in his 15 seasons. Parker’s teams aren’t just winning on the field, but the Bobcats have won 10-straight NSCAA Team Academic honors and nine-straight NSCAA Team Ethics awards. Heading into last season, Parker was ranked 30th among active NCAA Division III coaches with a .711 winning percentage and he was 37th all-time among both active and non-active coaches in winning percentage in Division III. Seven years ago, the Bobcats joined the Capital Athletic Conference and they haven’t skipped a beat. Frostburg has posted 89 wins, including back-to-back 17-win seasons in 2010 (17-4-1) and 2011 (17-2-2). FSU has earned 41 wins in conference play, including the 2012 and 2014 CAC Tournament Championships. Over the last seven years, Frostburg has posted a combined 62 shutouts, including 40 at home and 28 against CAC opponents. The Bobcats have finished second in the CAC regular-season standings three times (2010, 2011 & 2016), have played in the CAC Tournament Championship game on four occasions and have placed 31 players on the All-CAC teams. Frostburg again appeared in the CAC Tournament Championship game last fall after finishing second in the regularseason standings and ending the regular season on a five-game winning streak. FSU advanced past St. Mary’s (Md.), 4-2, on PKs in the CAC semifinals and earned a spot in the ECAC Tournament for the sixth time under Parker. The Bobcats finished fourth in the league in GAA (1.18) and shutouts (6). In 2015, Frostburg paced the CAC in several offensive categories, including points (126), goals (47), scoring offense (2.35) and points per game (6.3). FSU collected 10 wins and earned the third seed in the CAC Tournament. For the second time in three seasons, Frostburg made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament after capturing the 2014 CAC Tournament Title. The Bobcats knocked off top-seeded Christopher Newport in the semifinals of the tournament before shutting out Mary Washington, 2-0, in the title game at Bobcat Stadium. FSU led the conference in save percentage (.859), goals (48) and points (129). In 2013, Frostburg posted eight wins and advanced to the CAC Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season. FSU led the conference in scoring (2.3 GPG), finished second in both goals (41) and assists (32) and finished with the league’s fourth lowest goals against average (1.13). The Bobcats were the only CAC school to finish the season without a yellow or red card. In 2012, the Bobcats earned the program's seventh NCAA Tournament appearance after defeating Salisbury in the CAC Tournament Championship game. FSU led the CAC and finished
25th in the country at 3.15 goals per game, while posting a minuscule 0.77 goals against average. To cap the accolades, Adria Graham became the program's first-ever NSCAA All-American, while coach Parker was named the CAC Coach of the Year. Prior to 2010, FSU won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times under Parker's guidance (2002-05 and 2009). He also powered the Bobcats to the ECAC Tournament in three-consecutive seasons from 2006-2008. In 2009, Parker capped FSU's tenure in the AMCC in stellar fashion. Frostburg finished with a school record 18 wins (18-4 overall), scored a program record 90 goals, won 14 of 15 games during the middle part of the season, posted a 9-1 conference mark and advanced to the AMCC Championship game for the 11th-straight year. In the championship, FSU needed an overtime period to down Penn State Altoona as Lauren Russell drilled home a shot four minutes into the extra frame to send FSU to a 1-0 victory. In the NCAA Tournament, FSU lost to No. 9 ranked Otterbein 1-0 in the first round. Over the first seven years at the helm (2002-08), Parker built one of the most successful programs on the east coast. He led the Bobcats to four-consecutive AMCC Tournament Championships (2002-05) and four NCAA Tournaments (2002-05). In 2003, the Bobcats were chosen to host an NCAA match for the first time in school history and made the most of the opportunity, defeating Westminster 3-2 for their first NCAA Tournament victory in three tries. In 2008, Parker’s squad set school records in shutouts (15), save percentage (0.873), goals against average (0.35) and fewest goals allowed in a season (8). In 2007, Frostburg upset No. 18 ranked Johns Hopkins, 4-1, at Bobcat Stadium on a Friday night. Parker, a two-time AMCC Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004, led the Bobcats to 95 wins during that stretch, 35 wins in the AMCC and a school record 12-straight wins in the 2003 season. Parker coached 36 All-AMCC selections and six league Players of the Year, including three-time Great Lakes All-Region honoree Karen Kotofski. Parker has coached several individual school record holders, including Kotofski, the school's all-time leader in goals (83) and Lauren Russell, FSU's all-time leader in assists (39). Russell is also second in program history with 64 career goals. Prior to returning to western Maryland, Parker served as head girls soccer coach at Urbana High School in Frederick County, Md., since the school's opening in 1995. He guided the Hawks to an impressive 62-36-6 record and a pair of regional championships during his tenure. In just his second season at Urbana, Parker was named the Frederick County Coach of the Year after leading a team of freshmen and sophomores to the school's first-ever regional championship crown. six of Parker's seven years, earned their second regional title in 2001. Parker is no stranger to FSU, as he was a goalkeeper for the Bobcats from 1987-89. He was a member of two Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament qualifiers, including the 1989 squad that won the ECAC South Region Championship. Parker then coached the FSU women's soccer team as a club sport from 1990-1992 and received his degree in social sciences with a teaching certification from FSU in 1992. He moved on to West Virginia University where he serve as a graduate assistant for the Mountaineer men's team for two years while earning a master's in political science. Parker, who has a USSF "B" coaching license and a Premier
Diploma from the NSCAA, is on the coaching education staff of both the Maryland State Youth Soccer Assoc. and the NSCAA and teaches in the FSU Minor in Coaching program. Parker is also frequently on the Maryland Olympic Development Program Staff and led the Maryland 1990 Girls team to the Region I Tournament championship in 2005. He's had three Md. ODP teams appear in Region I Tournament Finals; the 1994 girls in 2009-10, 1996 girls in 2011 and the 1998 girls in 2013. He cutrrently coaches the Maryland 2002 team. Parker was a founder and staff coach with the Frederick United Soccer Club (now FC Frederick) until his return to FSU. He and his wife, Karen, a 1993 FSU graduate and native of Frostburg, have two children — Elise (16) and Matt (14).
GLEN BUTLER ASSISTANT COACH Canterbury
Glen Butler will begin his second year as the goalkeeper coach for both the Frostburg men's and women's soccer teams for the 2017 season. In 2016, Butler coached goalkeepers Hassan Mostafa and Rhianna Lapen. Mostafa was named to the All-CAC First Team and was selected to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Second Team. Lapen finished 2016 among the conference leaders in almost every statistical category, as the Bobcat women’s team advanced to the CAC Championship. Butler joined the Bobcat programs after serving as a professional soccer coach for the UK Elite Soccer club in Maryland and Virginia. He was the head of the UK Elite Petite Program for Maryland and assisted with the training of the goalkeepers for UKE and FC USA. Prior to UKE, Butler was a coach for the Total
Football Academy in the United Kingdom, serving as both the head and goalkeepers coach for the U18-19 men’s and women’s teams. He graduated from Canterbury Christchurch University with his bachelor’s degree in physical education and sport & exercise science in May 2012. He was president and founder of the athletic society at Christchurch and was both a player and coach for the men’s first team. He also coached the men’s second team and the women’s first team and all three squads captured league titles in the British University Championships. During that same time, Butler was the head coach for the U17 and U18 girls’ team for the Alletis Angels Football Club. Butler holds a UEFA B Professional Coaching License as well as a NSCAA Level 6 Coaching Certificate.
JENNIFER NANCE ASSISTANT COACH UMBC Jennifer Nance enters her first season as the women’s soccer graduate assistant coach in 2017. 2017 Season Preview
Anticipation for the 2017 women’s soccer season is high as
the Bobcats look to take a step forward from last season, which saw the team win 10 games and advance to the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship game.
After a slow start to the 2016 season, Frostburg hit its stride in
conference play. The Bobcats closed out the 2016 regular season with five-straight victories and earned the second seed in the CAC Tournament with a 7-2 mark in conference play.
Frostburg advanced to the 2016 CAC Championship after a
thrilling victory in the Semifinals over St. Mary’s (Md.) on penalty kicks.
“I think we learned how to believe your season is really never
over until it's over,” head coach Brian Parker said. “We were prepared for the CAC games and showed how competitive we need to be at the right time of year.”
Parker, now in his 16th season, is hoping for big things from the
Bobcat returners. Frostburg brings back a core of all-conference caliber players in its quest for a CAC Championship. Most notably, Frostburg returns a pair of 2016 All-CAC First Team selections in sophomore Brooke Shehade (forward) and senior Melanie Bell
[ SCHEMM ]
(midfield).
Shehade will lead the offensive attack after becoming one
of the most talented players in the conference last season. She paced the Bobcats in goals (8), assists (6), points (22), shots (54)
[ F E R R IS ]
and game-winning goals (4). An Odenton, Md. native, Shehade started in all 21 games a year ago.
“Brooke Shehade is developing into a terrific finisher,” Parker
said. “Her work rate with and without the ball is fantastic and she has learned to score in all kinds of ways.”
Bell has become a steady presence in the Bobcat midfield over
the last number of years, and the coaching staff expects big things from her again in her final season as a Bobcat. Bell started in 19 games, scored three goals and finished second on the team with 41 shots.
“Melanie Bell is everything you want in a box-to-box midfield
player,” Parker said. “She runs, works, is crafty with the ball and has a wicked shot. She has become an essential player here.” Versatile junior Danielle Ferris, sophomore Jesse Dunagan, senior Katie Broadhurst, junior Melissa Krofcheck and sophomore Gwen Schemm will also look to help the Bobcats offensively this season.

2017 Season Preview
Parker believes this is one of the deepest groups of forwards he
has seen in years, noting that the depth and competition within that group has been one of the biggest storylines of the preseason. Frostburg was one of the stingiest defenses in the conference in 2016 and all signs point to the Bobcats having another solid year on that end of the field this season. The Bobcats return multiple defenders who played extensively last season, including two All-CAC Second Team selections in seniors Lia Kelly and Alyssa Malanik.
Kelly started 19 games, while Malanik started 21. Frostburg
had six shutouts last season and allowed 1.18 goals per game, the fourth lowest total in the conference. Senior Kourtney McLain junior Anais Ventura will both contribute on the defensive end as well.
“We've always fostered an intense pride in defending in this
program and this group really exemplifies that spirit,” Parker said. “A shutout is a win for our team.”
In goal, junior Rhianna Lapen will miss the entire 2017 season
with a torn labrum. She will remain with the team, serving as a student assistant. Freshman Jenny Bullers will start in goal this season with junior Emily Faust coming to the program as a late
[ BELL ]
transfer. “ With Jenny, we're trying to find the right balance in terms of training volume and also managing our expectations of her in the goal,” Parker said. “She's responded very well so far and her experience is club and high school soccer is serving her well. Emily Faust arriving was a nice surprise and she'll compete for playing time for sure.”
Frostburg also brought in a plethora of depth and talent to the
program with this year’s recruiting class, adding 10 new faces to the team, including York (Pa.) junior transfer Hailey Turney.
The Bobcat women’s team opens the 2017 season on Friday,
September 1 when they travel to No. 22 Carnegie Mellon at 5:00 p.m.
