2017 Season Preview acclimate the newcomers to collegiate running,” added Luy. “The men’s team this year will be similar to last fall as we have 11 or 12 or possibly more guys fighting for the top seven spots.” Women
The Frostburg women’s team brings back plenty of
talent from a year ago, and the coaching staff feels the group can make a huge leap in the 2017 season. “With the higher number of runners, we clearly have more depth,” mentioned Luy. “We have 11 women who will be trading places every week, which is a good thing. The question is whether we can pick up the scoring at a big meet that we lost with the graduation of (Laurie) Gotte and (Faith) Thackston.”

After an impressive summer of conditioning and
preparation, head coach Dale Luy is excited to get the 2017 cross country season started.
The 2017 Frostburg State men’s and women’s
cross country teams feature a dynamic mix of returning runners and newcomers that should help the Bobcats compete for a spot near the top of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) standings.
“Both team’s numbers are good and both teams
continue to get larger and stronger,” said Luy. “Our women’s team could possibly be one of the largest in terms of total runners in program history, while the men’s team returns four of its top seven runners from last fall.” The Frostburg women’s team concluded 2016 with a pair of first-place team finishes. On the men’s side, Frostburg won three-straight meets in 2016, capping the streak with a win in the Bobcat Invitational last October.
will be looked to continue her improvement after she closed the year with her fastest 6K race of 2016 at the NCAA Mideast Regional.
“While Garrison and McCurry have been running
well this preseason, freshman Natalie Gray will push for a spot in the top five as she’s been running with the top group.”
Junior Jayla Jones continues her progression
heading into her third season after earning a top-10 overall finish at the Westmoreland CCC Invitational.
Sophomores Sidonie Brown and Samantha Gittere
are both vying to provide some valuable depth for the Bobcats in their second year with the program. Brown ran to an 18th-place finish at the Penn State Greater Allegheny Invitational while Gittere placed ninth at the same event.
“All the returners have come back in probably the
best shape since they arrived on campus at Frostburg,” said Luy.
“This year is the first time we’ve really had a core
of returning women with experience that can help

2017 Season Preview Men
After winning three-straight meets in 2016, Luy and the
staff are excited about the potential shown by the Frostburg men’s team in the offseason and believe it can translate to a solid 2017 season.
Junior Robert Romano will lead the way once again this
season, after collecting four top-15 finishes in 2016. Romano finished first in the 2016 WCCC Invitational, fifth in the Penn State-Greater Allegheny Invitational, third in the Bobcat Invitational and 13th at the Hood Open.
“He’s running better now than at any point in his Frostburg
career,” said Luy when asked about Romano returning as Frostburg’s top runner.
In addition to getting it done on the course, Romano has
set the standard for work in the classroom. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Romano to its 2016 Division III Men's Cross Country All-Academic team.
Romano was the Bobcat’s top finisher during his freshman
campaign, leading the team in five of six races.

Junior Matt Whitley will also be counted upon as one of
the top Bobcat runners this season, after concluding 2016 with four top-25 overall finishes. Whitley finished in ninth at the Westmoreland CCC Invitational and then earned a 12th place finish at the Penn State Greater Allegheny Invitational.
Sophomore Timothy Wolodkin enters his second season
as a Bobcat and has the potential to place among the Bobcat’s top runners in 2017. Wolodkin helped power the Bobcats to their three victories in 2016 with two top-10 finishes and a 12th-place finish at the Bobcat Invitational.
Junior Phillip Hogan and sophomore Jacob Rickards are
returning runners who will challenge for top-seven spots.
“Rickards and Wolodkin have also really stepped it up in
preseason, while freshmen Tanner Jacobs and Braxton Clark have been running with the top group,” mentioned Luy.
“We will have good depth, probably better than last year,”
said Luy. “The question is how much can our 4-10 runners improve during the course of the year to join our top three.”
Frostburg will open the 2017 cross country season at the
Galen Piper XC Challenge on Friday, September 1. The meet, which will be held at Shippensburg, begins at 8:00 p.m.
