Thompson, the 16th coach in the 48-year history of the program, led the Bobcats to five wins, including two shutouts and a victory in the FSU Tournament last fall

Thompson came to Frostburg after serving as an assistant coach at the Catholic University of America in 2016. The Cardinals won 10 games, advanced to the Landmark Conference Tournament semifinals, placed five players on the all-conference teams and finished with one All-American.

Frostburg, which just missed out on the CAC Tournament, collected all five wins at Bobcat Stadium and finished seventh in the nation with 22 defensive saves. FSU also

For two years prior to CUA, Thompson served as the graduate assistant coach at McDaniel College and served as the interim head coach for a five-month stretch in 2014-15. During those two years, the Green Terror won a combined 17 games, including eight in the Centennial Conference with an appearance in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament in 2014. She served as the program’s lead recruiter and was promoted to the interim head coach from November 2014 through March 2015. For the 2013 season, Thompson made her first stop at Frostburg and helped the Bobcats to seven wins with five shutouts. She worked specifically with the goalkeepers and defensive unit and FSU led the Capital Athletic Conference in saves (204) and finished second with 30 defensive saves. She also served as Frostburg’s top recruiter and assisted with the video assessment of upcoming opponents and postgame scouting. Prior to Frostburg, Thompson was an assistant coach at Moravian College for two years (2011-13), helping the Greyhounds to 17 total wins. Outside of her collegiate experience, Thompson has coached the Green Turtle Fells Point Field Hockey Club since November 2014, served as the USA Field Hockey Futures Site Coordinator since February 2017 and coached at the Nike Field Hockey Camp for seven years (2009-16). She earned both her bachelors and masters degrees from McDaniel. She earned her bachelors in exercise and sport science in 2011 and her masters in exercise science in 2016.

Travis Wyant begins his third season on the Frostburg field hockey staff in 2018. A year ago, Frostburg just missed out on the CAC Tournament, collected all five wins at Bobcat Stadium and finished seventh in the nation with 22 defensive saves. FSU also finished 21st in the country in saves per game (10.79). Wyant arrived at Frostburg after serving as a student assistant coach at the University of Mary Washington for two seasons. He gained experience in recruiting, game strategy and also post game breakdown and analysis. In his two years with UMW, the Eagles finished with a 28-10 record and ranked 10th in the nation in 2015.

Along with assisting with field hockey, Wyant also served as a student assistant for the Mary Washington women’ lacrosse team for the past two seasons. He developed game day and post-game graphics for UMW women’s lacrosse social media accounts as well as assisted with game day operations and statistics. He earned his bachelor’s degree in english with a concentration in writing from Mary Washington in the spring of 2016 and plans to pursue a master’s degree while attending Frostburg State University.

Marisa Sims begins her second season as a graduate assistant with the Frostburg field hockey team in 2018. Last fall, Frostburg just missed out on the CAC Tournament, collected all five wins at Bobcat Stadium and finished seventh in the nation with 22 defensive saves. FSU also finished 21st in the country in saves per game (10.79). Sims played on the Bridgewater field hockey team from 201416, earning All-ODAC Academic honors in all three seasons. She was also named to the ODAC All-Tournament Field Hockey Team in 2015. She spent the summer of 2017 as an activity leader at Education First, where she supervised children ages 10-17 in various activities in the New York City area. communications, technology & culture and a minor in coaching from Bridgewater College. She also spent a year studying abroad at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2016, Sims served as an assistant coach at the Brookfield Swim Club. She taught the fundamentals of swimming to children and assisted in the supervision of coaches throughout the season. She was an academic coach at Bridgewater in 2015. Sims helped students with notetaking and study tools to ensure all of their assignments were completed. Sims was a photographer for the Bridgewater athletic communications department from December 2013 to May 2014. Sims will be pursuing a master’s degree from Frostburg State University.

2018 Season Preview The Frostburg State field hockey team enters 2018 looking to take another step forward under second-year head coach Kaitlin Thompson.

VAN WIE

“A lot of what we’ve been doing for the past few months has been building our confidence and building what we call a ‘next play mentality,’” said Thompson. “There are going to be mistakes on the field, what are we doing next after we make that mistake? Are we hanging our heads or are we just going back, redefending, getting the ball back and attacking right away?” In 2017, the Bobcats posted a 5-14 record, matching their win total from the previous season. Frostburg narrowly missed out on adding more wins with three overtime losses, including against eventual Empire 8 champion Washington & Jefferson. FSU field hockey has to replace major production from four graduating seniors all over the field. Midfielder Ivy Meissner led the roster with 13 points, defender Savannah Neubert led the nation with 12 defensive saves, goalkeeper Nicole Leighty led the CAC in saves and midfielder Elizabeth Davis started all 19 contests last season. Thompson’s ‘18 squad feature a five-player senior class of Ashleigh Myers (midfield), Holly Van Wie (forward), Cara Morrell (defense), Molly Pickard (forward) and Samantha Schaffer (forward) that will see action in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament for the first time in their careers. “We have seven new players and the seniors have done a nice job of taking them in and teaching them our mentalities and gameplans,” said Thompson. “All over the field I can see seniors taking first-years and sophomores aside and showing them what they need to do and telling them what they need to fix.”

MORRELL

The Bobcat roster lists eight forwards coming into the 2018 campaign, highlighted by Van Wie and Pickard. Van Wie led the Bobcats with five goals in 2017, including a stretch of four-straight games with a goal. Pickard found the back of the net three times and scored the game-winning goal in victories over Ohio Wesleyan and McDaniel.

2018 Season Preview “The upperclassmen know where they need to be,” said Thompson. “We have very good potential to be knocking in a lot of goals this year.”

MYERS

Sophomores Gabby Rachuba and Sam Coffey both return after productive rookie seasons in Frostburg. Rachuba collected a pair of goals and three assists last year, while Coffey scored three times. Schaffer and junior Logan Gladden each added two goals and one assist last fall. First-year Taylor Hackett and sophomore transfer Camryn Blake are looking to get into the mix offensively as well. In the midfield, the Bobcats have to replace the production and leadership of Meissner and Davis. The Bobcats will to turn Myers and sophomore Sam Coffey. “Ashleigh Myers and Sam Coffey are going to do a great job of stepping into those leadership roles in the midfield,” said Thompson. “I think that is an area where we’re going to have a lot of first-years, but those two are great leaders on and off the field.” First-year Madana Tigyer has impressed the staff in preseason workouts and looks to contribute in the midfield this season. The Frostburg defense collected to two shutouts and made 22 defensive saves, good for seventh-most in the nation. The Bobcats return two-thirds of its defensive backline in the form of Morrell and sophomore Brooke Lafayette. Morrell anchors the defense and plays a critical role on both penalty corner units, finishing last season with three goals and three assists. “Cara has been a great leader on that back line,” said Thompson. “I think our back line will be set with her and Brooke returning there.”

SMIZER

Newcomers Emy Nelson, Katie Mitchell, and former FSU women’s soccer player Kaylyn Gardiner all could vie for time defensively. At goalkeeper, the Bobcats return junior Sierra Smizer and bring in first-year Maggie Haupt. Smizer appeared in seven games last season, allowing 16 goals and making 36 saves. “Smizer has done a really good job of taking Maggie under her wing,” said Thompson. “Smizer is definitely ready to step into that [starting] role.” The Bobcat schedule features 14 familiar opponents from last season, including four NCAA Tournament teams from 2017 (Christopher Newport, Salisbury, Washington & Jefferson and Juniata). With Wesley College exiting the CAC in 2018, all six teams in the CAC qualify for a postseason berth. It will be the Bobcats’ first appearance in the conference tournament since 2012. All five of the Bobcats’ wins last season took place at Bobcat Stadium where FSU is slated to play seven games in 2018.

About Frostburg State

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
