BYRNES HEAD COACH PLATTSBURGH STATE

Keith Byrnes enters his 17th season as head coach of the Frostburg State men’s soccer program in 2018 and has led the Bobcats to a 159-121-30 overall record. He is the secondwinningest coach in the 77-year history of the Frostburg men’s program. Over the last seven seasons, Byrnes has guided the Bobcats to 62 wins, 17 ties and four appearances in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament (2011-13 & 2015). FSU has posted 29 wins and eight ties in the Capital Athletic Conference and has earned five berths in the CAC Tournament. In 2011, Byrnes was named the CAC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg to an 11-3-5 overall record and 4-2-2 league slate. A year ago, Frostburg won six matches despite a handful of ranked teams on the schedule and the Bobcats advanced to the CAC Tournament for the second-consecutive season. The Bobcats finished third in the CAC in saves (79) and fifth with five shutouts. In 2016, the Bobcats finished with nine wins against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Frostburg posted five shutouts, earned its fifth trip to the CAC Tournament and defeated Penn State Harrisburg, 3-2, in the opening round. Frostburg emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the nation following the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In ‘15, the Bobcats finished eighth in the nation in save percentage (.883) after ranking second nationally (.909) following the ’14 campaign. In 2015, Frostburg was 21st in DIII in team goals against average (.64) and 35th in shutout percentage (0.50). FSU finished with nine shutouts, including four in the CAC. The Bobcats also opened the season with five shutouts in their first six games. At the other end of the field, Frostburg finished second in the CAC in points per game (5.94) and second in scoring offense (2.22). In 2014, Frostburg captured fifth DIII in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU, which finished 10-6-3 overall, posted 11 shutouts, including five in the CAC. The Bobcats played to a 13-7 overall mark behind a perfect 9-0 record at home in 2013. FSU posted six shutouts, including five at home and won the FSU Tournament Championship for the thirdstraight year. Byrnes’ team finished third in the CAC in scoring (2.0 gpg), fourth in goals (40) and fifth in assists (26). In 2012, Byrnes guided Frostburg State to a 10-0-3 start, one of just 11 NCAA Division III schools to open the season undefeated through the first 13 contests. FSU finished 2012 with a 12-3-4 overall record. The 2010 year marked the first for Frostburg as a member of the CAC, one of the nation’s toughest leagues. The Bobcats finished 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the CAC.

Prior to 2010, Byrnes guided his Bobcats to eight-straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal appearances and back-to-back ECAC South Region Tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The Bobcats posted an overall record of 83-66-10 in Byrnes’ first eight years at the helm. During that stretch, 36 players earned All-AMCC honors and Byrnes was named the league’s coach of the year in 2008. In ‘08, Byrnes eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career with an ECAC Tournament first round win over Washington & Jefferson (1-0). He also guided FSU to the most wins in a season since taking over the program in 2002 (14-5-1) and the most wins since the Bobcats won 16 games in 2000. In 2007, the Bobcats won six of their final eight games, including a run to the ECAC South Region Championship game. FSU also set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 16-0 defeat of Mt. Aloysius. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the parttime head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of post-season appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC All-Academic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

He assisted the SFC marketing team with entertainment and fan engagement initiatives at basketball games from 2014-16.

2018 Season Preview

The Frostburg State men’s soccer team enters the 2018

season eager to test and prove itself. The Bobcats are two years removed from a Capital Athletic Conference semifinal berth, but there are new faces abound with only two players remaining from that squad. The Bobcat roster is comprised of five returning upperclassmen, eight returning sophomores and 13 newcomers. Head coach Keith Byrnes, in his seventeenth season, has the challenge of establishing his style of play with a young and moldable group. “We always like to build out of the back and possess the ball,” said Byrnes. “This year we want to be a little more direct at times and try and put teams under more pressure and get the ball in their end of the field and get the ball in the box.” The Bobcats defense has earned a reputation as a stingy unit, and that was continued last season with the Bobcats ranking third in the CAC in saves (79) and fifth with five shutouts. Senior

defender Brett Basham has collected 58 caps for the Bobcats and earned all-conference honors as a sophomore. Senior captain Blake Geatz also made three starts and contributed to a pair of shutout wins. Sophomores Punya Saleekul, Shawn Lewis and Jake Meredith all saw action along the Bobcat back line as first-year players. Saleekul made 17 starts and led the Bobcats with four assists last season. Lewis was a starter in five of the Bobcats’ six wins and Meredith started four contests as well. First-years Jose Rodriguez and Cameron Coates are working to get into the mix defensively. “We like the way the back line is looking,” said Byrnes. “It always takes a little bit of time to get that continuity down, but if we limit the mistakes they should be a solid back line.” The Bobcats struggled in the goal-scoring department last season, ranking 10th in the CAC with 20 goals. Frostburg lost its top three goal-scorers and does

not return a player that scored in multiple games last season.

2018 Season Preview Senior Haven Mackie and sophomore Logan Imbraguglio each tallied two goals last season, with Mackie scoring twice against Southern Virginia and Imbraguglio adding a pair of goals against Rutgers-Camen. “We’re looking for a number nine to stand out,” said Byrnes. “Whether it’s Haven or Andre Lakanu or one of the new guys. That’s the question mark, can we be productive enough to find the back of the net and win games?” In the midfield, there are a variety of combinations that Byrnes could employ. The Bobcats return senior midfielders Christian Deynes and Alferid Kemal in addition to a slew of sophomore midfielders, including Imbraguglio, Randy Putnam, Derek Staines, Andre Lakanu and Will Macomber. “They’ll fit together very well, they got to train all spring in those positions,” said Byrnes. “I think there will be plenty of depth there, I like the way the midfield is looking right now because those guys got good experience at the end of the season and in the spring.”

[ K E MA L ]

With no returning goalies to the roster, the Bobcat net minder for 2018 will be a newcomer. First-year Joel Assal looks to be the starter with fellow newcomer Luke Sweeney serving as the backup. With the exit of Wesley and Marymount (Va.) from the CAC, all eight remaining teams qualify for postseason play, making it the third-straight season FSU men’s soccer will appear in the CAC Tournament. Men’s soccer will not have a chance to ease into conference play as the Bobcats play the four CAC semifinalists from last season in its first four conference games. “It’s nice to know there is no pressure and we can play around with lineups and games don’t mean everything,” said Byrnes. “At the same time we have to play with some urgency and play at a high level to make sure we’re ready to compete.” Frostburg’s schedule features three teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last season (Johns Hopkins, Dickinson and Mary Washington) and 10 of 17 games are against teams with doubledigit win totals from last year.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
