HEAD COACH BRIAN PARKER
BRIAN PARKER HEAD COACH FROSTBURG STATE Brian Parker begins his 17th season as head coach of the Frostburg State University women's soccer program in 2018. The 1992 FSU graduate is the winningest Bobcat women's soccer coach with a 211-87-36 record in his 16 seasons. Parker’s teams aren’t just winning on the field, but the Bobcats have won 10-straight United Soccer Coaches Team Academic honors and 10-straight USC Team Ethics awards. Heading into the 2017 season, Parker was ranked 39th among active NCAA Division III coaches with a .696 winning percentage. Eight years ago, the Bobcats joined the Capital Athletic Conference and they haven’t skipped a beat. Frostburg has posted 99 wins, including back-to-back 17-win seasons in 2010 (17-4-1) and 2011 (17-2-2). FSU has earned 48 wins in conference play, including the 2012 and 2014 CAC Tournament Championships. Over the last eight years, Frostburg has posted a combined 70 shutouts, including 45 at home and 35 against CAC opponents. The Bobcats have finished second in the CAC regular-season standings four times (2010, 2011, 2016 & 2017), have played in the CAC Tournament Championship game on five occasions and have placed 34 players on the All-CAC teams. Frostburg has appeared in the CAC Tournament Championship game in each of the last two seasons and the Bobcats closed both regular seasons with five-game winning streaks. Frostburg advanced to the ECAC Tournament in each of the last two campaigns. Last fall, the Bobcats earned 10 wins, including six at Bobcat Stadium with eight wins coming via shutout. The eight shutouts ranked the Bobcats second in the CAC standings. Frostburg earned its spot in the league title game after shutting out rival Salisbury 1-0 in the semifinals. In 2016, Frostburg posted 10 wins as six came via shutout and FSU advanced past St. Mary’s (Md.), 4-2, on PKs in the CAC semifinals. The Bobcats finished fourth in the league in GAA (1.18) and shutouts (6). In 2015, Frostburg paced the CAC in several offensive categories, including points (126), goals (47), scoring offense (2.35) and points per game (6.3). FSU collected 10 wins and earned the third seed in the CAC Tournament. For the second time in three seasons, Frostburg made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament after capturing the 2014 CAC Tournament Title. The Bobcats knocked off top-seeded Christopher Newport in the semifinals of the tournament before shutting out Mary Washington, 2-0, in the title game at Bobcat Stadium. FSU led the conference in save percentage (.859), goals (48) and points (129). In 2013, Frostburg posted eight wins and advanced to the CAC Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season. FSU led the conference in scoring (2.3 gpg), finished second in both goals (41) and assists (32) and finished with the league’s fourth lowest goals against average (1.13). The Bobcats were the only CAC school to
finish the season without a yellow or red card. In 2012, the Bobcats earned the program's seventh NCAA Tournament appearance after defeating Salisbury in the CAC Tournament Championship game. FSU led the CAC and finished 25th in the country at 3.15 goals per game, while posting a minuscule 0.77 goals against average. To cap the accolades, Adria Graham became the program's first-ever NSCAA All-American, while coach Parker was named the CAC Coach of the Year. Prior to 2010, FSU won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times under Parker's guidance (2002-05 and 2009). He also powered the Bobcats to the ECAC Tournament in three-consecutive seasons from 2006-2008. In 2009, Parker capped FSU's tenure in the AMCC in stellar fashion. Frostburg finished with a school record 18 wins (18-4 overall), scored a program record 90 goals, won 14 of 15 games during the middle part of the season, posted a 9-1 conference mark and advanced to the AMCC Championship game for the 11th-straight year. In the championship, FSU needed an overtime period to down Penn State Altoona as Lauren Russell drilled home a shot four minutes into the extra frame to send FSU to a 1-0 victory. In the NCAA Tournament, FSU lost to No. 9 ranked Otterbein 1-0 in the first round. Over the first seven years at the helm (2002-08), Parker built one of the most successful programs on the east coast. He led the Bobcats to four-consecutive AMCC Tournament Championships (2002-05) and four NCAA Tournaments (2002-05). In 2003, the Bobcats were chosen to host an NCAA match for the first time in school history and made the most of the opportunity, defeating Westminster 3-2 for their first NCAA Tournament victory in three tries. In 2008, Parker’s squad set school records in shutouts (15), save percentage (0.873), goals against average (0.35) and fewest goals allowed in a season (8). In 2007, Frostburg upset No. 18 ranked Johns Hopkins, 4-1, at Bobcat Stadium on a Friday night. Parker, a two-time AMCC Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004, led the Bobcats to 95 wins during that stretch, 35 wins in the AMCC and a school record 12-straight wins in the 2003 season. Parker coached 36 All-AMCC selections and six league Players of the Year, including three-time Great Lakes All-Region honoree Karen Kotofski. Parker has coached several individual school record holders, including Kotofski, the school's all-time leader in goals (83) and Lauren Russell, FSU's all-time leader in assists (39). Russell is also second in program history with 64 career goals. Prior to returning to western Maryland, Parker served as head girls soccer coach at Urbana High School in Frederick County, Md., since the school's opening in 1995. He guided the Hawks to an impressive 62-36-6 record and a pair of regional championships during his tenure. In just his second season at Urbana, Parker was named the Frederick County Coach of the Year after leading a team

of freshmen and sophomores to the school's first-ever regional championship crown. The Hawks, who posted winning records in six of Parker's seven years, earned their second regional title in 2001. Parker is no stranger to FSU, as he was a goalkeeper for the Bobcats from 1987-89. He was a member of two Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament qualifiers, including the 1989 squad that won the ECAC South Region Championship. Parker then coached the FSU women's soccer team as a club sport from 1990-1992 and received his degree in social sciences with a teaching certification from FSU in 1992. He moved on to West Virginia University where he serve as a graduate assistant for the Mountaineer men's team for two years while earning a master's in political science. Parker, who has a USSF "B" coaching license and a Premier
Diploma from United Soccer Coaches, is on the coaching education staff of both the Maryland State Youth Soccer Assoc. (MSYSA) and United Soccer Coaches and teaches in the FSU Minor in Coaching program. Parker is also frequently on the Maryland Olympic Development Program Staff and recently coached the 2002 girls team and is the current head coach of the MD ODP 2003 (16U) girls. Parker was a founder and staff coach with the Frederick United Soccer Club (now FC Frederick) until his return to FSU. He and his wife, Karen, a 1993 FSU graduate and native of Frostburg, have two children — Elise (17) and Matt (15).
JENNIFER NANCE ASSISTANT COACH UMBC
Jennifer Nance enters her second season as the women’s soccer graduate assistant coach in 2018. A year ago, the Bobcats earned 10 wins, including six at Bobcat Stadium with eight wins coming via shutout. The eight shutouts ranked the Bobcats second in the CAC standings. Frostburg earned its spot in the league title game after shutting out rival Salisbury 1-0 in the semifinals. Nance arrived at Frostburg after concluding a highly successful playing career at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Nance started in 37 career games as the Retrievers’ goalkeeper, posting an 0.89 goals against average. In 2015, Nance was awarded the Most Improved Player of the UMBC women’s soccer team and was also nominated as the
team’s Breakout Player of the Year. She was a Second Team AllAmerica East Conference selection in 2014. She served as team captain as a senior in 2015. Nance was a sports marketing associate at UMBC for two years (2014-16), where she helped aid in promotion of athletic events, playing music and assisting the sports marketing department. She graduated from UMBC in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and minor in management of aging studies and sociology. Nance was the senior captain of the 2011 Severna Park high school girl’s soccer team that won the county and regional championships. She is be pursuing a master’s degree at Frostburg State.
MELANIE BELL ASSISTANT COACH FROSTBURG STATE Melanie Bell begins her first year as a graduate assistant with the Frostburg women’s soccer team this fall after a standout four-year playing career for the Bobcats. Bell was a three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference performer, while scoring 15 goals with four assists as a ‘box-to-box’ center midfielder. A Sykesville, Md. native, Bell appeared in 77 games in her four years and was voted team captain as a senior last fall. Bell graduated with honors from FSU with a double-major in law

& society and political science, while achieving a 3.96 GPA. During her senior campaign, she was named a Google Cloud Academic All-America as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and she was named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region Team. She recently earned the United Soccer Coaches National Diploma and is pursuing an MBA at FSU.
2018 Season Preview The Frostburg State women's soccer team wants to go out on top. With Frostburg State exiting Division III after the season, the Bobcats have one last crack at the program's third Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championship after reaching the CAC title game in each of the last two seasons.
[ SHEHADE ]
"Every season is a building process," said head coach Brian Parker. "We view every game of the season as a chance to get better and improve and we really did a great job of having a finish to our season last year. I think our kids have the right attitude and understand that it's a cumulative process and that we want to be playing our best soccer in November and in the postseason." Frostburg began last season with a challenging non-conference slate and entered conference play with a 1-6 record. The Bobcats proceeded to tear through the CAC with a 7-1-1 record to earn a second-place conference finish. In the CAC Tournament, FSU toppled in-state rival Salisbury 1-0 in the semifinals before falling to Christopher Newport in the conference title game for the second-straight season. The Bobcats qualified for the ECAC Tournament for the second-consecutive year and reached the quarterfinals. Parker, in his 17th season can lean on 13 upperclass returners to the roster. Seniors Rhianna Lapen, Melissa Krofcheck and Kelly Richards were named team captains for the 2018 campaign. "We have seven seniors this year, fantastic players in every third of the field in that senior class," said Parker. Of those returners, the most decorated is two-time All-CAC First Team forward Brooke Shehade. Shehade led the Bobcats in goals (10), points (23), shots (54), shots on goal (34) and game-winning goals (3). In nine conference games she tallied eight goals, 19 points and three game-winning goals, good for first in the conference in all three categories.
[ TURNEY ]
"Brooke is an exceptional athlete and a worker," said Parker. "She obviously has a terrific shot and a great energy and a real presence as a forward." Joining Shehade up top are seniors Danielle Ferris and Hailey Turney. Ferris ranked second on the roster with three goals and tied for the team lead with three assists. In 2017, Turney's first season with the Bobcats, she posted a pair of goals and three assists. Richards put together an outstanding offseason and looks to contribute, along with sophomore Emily Lehman, first-year Heather Finney and junior transfer Emilee Fierro. In the midfield, the Bobcats will have to replace All-CAC First Team midfielder Melanie Bell (who is now a Bobcat assistant coach). Despite this, the Bobcats have a slew of returners in the middle third of the field. Krofcheck returns after starting 28 games as a holding midfielder over the last two seasons.

2018 Season Preview Junior Jesse Dunagan proved to be one of the roster's most versatile players last year by playing in all thirds of the field, and classmate Gwen Schemm provides a high soccer IQ and technical skill. Both Dunagan and Schemm played in all 21 games last season and combined to make 34 starts. "Melissa Krofcheck has been a leader in our program already, she's among the best athletes we've had here in years," said Parker. "This is an opportunity for Gwen Schemm to really show that she's a fantastic box-to-box midfielder, and Jessie Dunagan also has fantastic possession ability and athleticism." Junior Emily Rhinaman and sophomore Sienna Grau also return to the midfield. First-years Kori Striano and Audra Curtin have impressed in preseason workouts. Perhaps the biggest question mark for the Frostburg women's soccer team is in its defensive personnel. Frostburg owned one of the most parsimonious defensive units in the CAC last season, posting eight shutouts in 20 games. In conference play, six of the nine matches were clean sheets. The defense will have to be re-made in 2018 after the graduation of Kourtney McLain, Lia Kelly and 2017 All-CAC First Teamer Alyssa Malanik. Senior outside back Anais Ventura as is the lone returning defensive starter and has racked up 35 caps over the last two seasons. Other returning defenders include juniors Rylee Learn and Rebecca Phillip along with sophomores Danielle McLain and Morgan Magaha. First-years Abbey Dennis and Mackenzie Folch also look to get into the mix defensively along with junior Erika Allen. "We've started to get very organized and develop some good defensive habits," said Parker. "There's no question that I think we'll be a very good, athletic defensive team and we'll defend the full field." In goal, Lapen returns to the roster after missing the entire 2017 season with an injury. Lapen finished second in the CAC in save percentage (.843) and wins (7) in 2016. "Rhi had the injury last year and has a little bit of a chip on her shoulder and feels like she has a lot to prove," said Parker. "She could have an exceptional season and that would help our team a lot." Senior Emily Faust also returns after a strong first season in Frostburg. Faust recorded six shutouts and finished second in the CAC in wins (8) and save percentage (.839) in 2017. Stephanie Vigezzi joins squad as a first-year goalkeeper as well. Frostburg's 2018 schedule features two NCAA Tournament teams from last season: McDaniel and Christopher Newport. Frostburg will not be able to ease into conference play with the Bobcats traveling to Salisbury (Sept. 29) and hosting Christopher Newport (Oct. 6) in its first two CAC games. With Marymount (Va.) and Wesley exiting the CAC, there are no longer first round byes for the top two seeds in the conference. Instead, all eight teams qualify and will play in the quarterfinals.
