2019 Season Preview

There is new leadership at the top of the Frostburg State softball program for the 2019 campaign as Bill Vasko was hired in the fall and is entering his first season with the Bobcats. Vasko and his staff are very optimistic about the ‘19 season as the Bobcats return a healthy dose of talent from a successful 2018 campaign. Frostburg returns three players that hit over .300, two starting pitchers in the circle and a total of seven starters from last year’s 22-16 team that collected two wins in the CAC Tournament. FSU is leaving the CAC for the NCAA Division II ranks next season and the Bobcats have all the pieces in place to make another run at the league title. “So far I’ve been really pleased with all of the work they put in and how they have progressed in terms of how they have bought in to what we are doing,” said Vasko. “I’m especially pleased with where we are with our hitting and I thought that was our strength coming in as a new coach. We’ve continued to get better at hitting and our go-to will be our offense.” “I expect a lot of the players who return from last year, especially those who had good seasons to continue to do what they did and get better the longer the season goes on,” added Vasko. Vasko came to Frostburg after serving as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I UMass Lowell for four years, helping the team to 70 wins. Last spring, Lowell finished second in the America East Conference regular season and runner-up in the league tournament.

[ FORD ] second on the team with 25 RBI to go along with 15 runs, 33 hits, five doubles and 43 total bases.

Mehrling was a dual threat for the Bobcats all spring at the plate and in the circle. She hit .304 and tied for the team lead with five home runs. In 35 starts, she also had 34 hits, 18 runs scored, eight doubles with 26 RBI. Meanwhile as a pitcher, Mehrling made 10 starts and At Frostburg, Vasko takes over the reins of a team with plenty of young talent that should provide stability and depth picked up five wins with one shutout and 34 strikeouts. in the program for years to come. “I think these three are going to be the middle part of our lineup,” mentioned Vasko. “We are going to be dependent Players Leading the way at the plate for Frostburg will be the return on them to drive in a lot of runs. I think they will have a lot of opportunities to drive in runs and that’s what is of sophomores Taylor McCarty and Aliyah Ramey and expected upon them. Based on the numbers last year I junior Katelyn Mehrling, who all hit over .300 a year ago. Frostburg finished second in the CAC in walks (106), fourth feel those will improve.” in HRs (17) and fifth in RBI (160).

McCarty is Frostburg’s leading returning hitter after smacking .317 as a first-year in 37 starts. She slugged .433 with a .374 on-base percentage and reached base safely in 30 games. She finished second on the team in hits (38) and added 17 RBI, eight doubles and two home runs. Like McCarty, Ramey had a standout first-year with FSU and hit .308 while starting in 33 games. She finished

“I think we have a great surrounding cast around them that will help continue the offensive production,” Vasko said. Senior Olivia Ford (second base) and junior Claire Hanlon (center field) are the only returners to start all 38 games last year. “These two will be at the top part of our order at least at the beginning part of the season,” said Vasko. “They

expect to be table setters for the rest of the lineup.” Ford, the club’s only senior, is known for her quickness on the base paths after stealing 10 bases in 11 attempts last spring. She hit .289 with 33 hits, three doubles and 12 RBI. Hanlon finished with a .289 batting average and was third on the team last year with 114 at bats. She added 33 hits, 15 runs and 12 RBI with two stolen bases. Sophomore Sam Carver started 36 contests in the outfield and hit .278 with 27 hits, 16 runs and 12 RBI. Classmate Kat Treff is the seventh and final returning starter from last year and should enter this season competing for time in the outfield and infield. She finished with 11 hits, 13 runs and seven RBI in her first year. Sophomores Ally Weiman, Shylo Arneson, Emily Moll and Carly Wirth combined to appear in 73 games last year with 17 hits with eight RBI.

2019 Season Preview “All three of our first-years, Emily Christmann, Erica Payne and Amber Keene will fill roles and are expected to compete as the season develops,” added Vasko. In the circle, Mehrling and Wieman return after winning five games each a year ago in their first years. Mehrling fanned 34 batters in 70 innings of work with five complete games, while Wieman struckout 26 in 50 IP with four complete games. Moll also appeared in three games, striking out three in 2.2 innings of work. “Katelyn (Mehrling) and Ally (Wieman) return most of the innings and we have Emily (Moll) who saw a little bit of action last spring,” noted Vasko. “This year, we’ve added Taylor (McCarty) as a fourth pitcher. She didn’t pitch last year but she will give us a fourth arm in the rotation.” “I know the returning pitchers are excited that they will get to carry the bulk of the load this spring and they welcome that increased amount of work,” said Vasko. Schedule “Since we haven’t had much of an opportunity to be outside in a live scrimmage situation, there will be a lot of learning between all of us in what I expect and how to work together,” said Vasko. “The exciting part about our schedule is we are scheduled to play three preseason top-15 teams.” “My advice to the team is to use these early tournament games to get prepared for our conference tournament. We want to be playing our best softball when we head into the conference portion of our schedule.” The three top-15 teams are No. 1 ranked Virginia Wesleyan, No. 6 Christopher Newport and No. 11 Randolph-Macon. Frostburg opens its schedule this weekend at the Salem Invitational against Brandeis and Randolph. FSU visits Myrtle Beach in mid-March for Spring Break for eight contests and the Bobcats will open their home slate on Sunday, March 24 with Bridgewater at 1:00 pm. Southern Virginia opens the CAC portion of the slate for Frostburg on Wednesday, April 3 at 3:00 pm.
