Ángel Rey Rodríguez has passed on. Ángel Rey Rodríguez, honorary chairman of the ARC Eurobanan Group, died during the night of the 29th of July, at the age of 85 years.

The ability to forge one of the most powerful companies in the national fruit and vegetable growing sector made the founder of the Ángel Rey Group stand out.

His passion for the fruit market was the result of an enterprising personality and a vocation nurtured since his childhood. His father, Ramón Rey Faidel, set up as a wholesaler in the Mercado de la Cebada (Madrid) in 1918 and subsequently in the Mercado de Legazpi, where after the Civil War, Ángel Rey consolidated the company.

His sons Ángel, Joaquín and Ramón continued with his legacy on the commercial frontline. Don Ángel continued in the world of farming, growing citrus fruits in the Spanish Levante region: mandarins, limes, oranges and other exotic citrus fruits, until his final days.

D. Ángel Rey Rodríguez, presidente honorífico del Grupo ARC Eurobanan, ha fallecido durante la noche del 29 de julio a los 85 años.

El fundador del Grupo Ángel Rey destacó por su capacidad para forjar una de las empresas más potentes del sector hortofrutícola nacional. Su pasión por el mercado de la fruta era el resultado de un carácter emprendedor y una vocación alimentada desde niño. Su padre, D. Ramón Rey Faidel, se instaló como mayorista en el Mercado de la Cebada (Madrid) en 1918 y posteriormente en el Mercado de Legazpi, donde Ángel Rey, pasada la Guerra Civil, refunda la empresa.

Sus hijos Ángel, Joaquín y Ramón continuaron su legado en la primera línea comercial. Don Ángel, siguió hasta sus últimos días en el mundo de la agricultura, cultivando cítricos en el levante español, mandarinas, limas, naranjas y otros cítricos exóticos.

l edificio, inaugurado a principios de julio, dotado de laboratorios y una planta piloto, aspira a convertirse en el referente de su segmento de la actividad investigadora a nivel continental.

“Las pérdidas postcosecha de fruta se estiman entre un 12 y un 25%, y nosotros llevamos más de 50 años aportando soluciones a los productores y a los exportadores, alargando la vida útil de esa fruta”, destacó el director general y científico de la compañía, Benito Orihuel, “primero fueron los cítricos, luego los plátanos, también la fruta de pepita, más recientemente los pimientos y ahora como novedad tomates y aguacates”.

he building, inaugurated at the beginning of July and fitted with laboratories and a pilot plant, intends to become the reference point for its segment in research in Europe.

“The post-harvest fruit losses are estimated between 12% and 25% and we have spent over 50 years providing solutions for producers and exporters, extending the useful lifespan of this fruit”, the general and scientific manager of the company, Benito Orihuel, pointed out. “We began with citrus fruits, then we moved on to bananas, and also to pip fruit and more recently, to peppers and our latest additions are tomatoes and avocadoes”.

The new building triples the surface area used by laboratories. It has a post-harvest vegetable physiology department, fitted with a Texturometer and a colorimeter; a chemistry laboratory, equipped with two HPLCs, a spectrophotometer and a gas chromatograph; and a third microbiology laboratory. The laboratories pursue analytical efficiency, faster responses, developing new diagnosis methods (detection of ‘in vivo’ resistances), preventing the possible appearance of postharvest physiopathies and developing new research projects.

Laboratories cover the upper part of the building. Inside, the pilot plant is fitted with an emulsion manufacturing reactor, a drencher, which will implement new developments, treatment line application units, along with cold storage and degreening rooms.

The new Post-harvest Technology Centre is framed within a much larger project, which has a budget of over 4 million euros. Juanjo Febrer, chairman of the Board of Directors, stated “The new facilities will be up and running in September, ready for the start of the new campaign”.

El nuevo edificio triplica la superficie destinada a laboratorios. Cuenta con un departamento de fisiología vegetal postcosecha, dotado con un Texturómetro y un colorímetro; un laboratorio de química, equipado con dos HPLC, un espectrofotómetro y un cromatógrafo de gases; y un tercero de microbiología. Los laboratorios persiguen la eficacia analítica, respuestas más rápidas, desarrollo de nuevos métodos de diagnóstico (detección de resistencias ‘in vivo’), prevenir la posible aparición de fisiopatías postcosecha y desarrollar nuevos proyectos de investigación.

Los laboratorios cubren la parte superior del edificio. En la inferior se encuentra la planta piloto equipada con un reactor de fabricación de emulsiones, un drencher, que implementará nuevos desarrollos, unidades de aplicación de línea de tratamiento y cámaras de frigoconservación y desverdización.

This new factory will mean doubling the production capacity and a new industrial type building will be available for storage and dispatch of finished produce. A new loading bay and a machine room are also being developed.

The work will be completed with the refurbishment of the warehouse, as well as the workshop that will be transformed into a raw material shed. The manufacturing buildings for intermediate produce and for final produce will also be extended.

At the opening ceremony customers, brokers, suppliers, universities and collaborating technological centres, along with workers from the company were all present, as well as different institutional authorities, amongst them the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, and the Mayoress of Potríes, Assumpta Dominguez. After signing the Visitors’ Book, Ximo Puig emphasised the role of companies such as Citrosol, who work to boost development and economic progress. Assumpta Dominguez underscored the lasting link that ties Citrosol to Potríes, and she emphasised the importance for the town of having some cutting edge facilities in the area.

El nuevo Centro de Tecnología Postcosecha se enmarca en un proyecto de mayor envergadura, que cuenta con un presupuesto superior a los 4 millones de euros. Juanjo Febrer, presidente del Consejo de Administración, describió que “Las nuevas instalaciones estarán en macha en el mes de septiembre, de cara al inicio de la nueva campaña”.

Con la nueva fábrica, se duplicará la capacidad de producción y se dispondrá de un nuevo edificio de tipología industrial destinado a almacenamiento y expedición de producto acabado. También se está ejecutando un nuevo muelle de carga y una sala de máquinas.

Las obras se completarán con la rehabilitación del almacén, así como del taller que se transformará en una nave de materias primas. Además, se ampliarán tanto la nave de fabricación de producto intermedio como la de producto final.

En la inauguración estuvieron presentes clientes, prescriptores, proveedores, universidades y centros tecnológicos colaboradores, los trabajadores de la empresa, además de diferentes autoridades institucionales, entre ellas el presidente de la Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, y la alcaldesa de Potríes, Assumpta Dominguez.

Ximo Puig, tras firmar en el libro de honor, enfatizó el papel de compañías como Citrosol que hacen de locomotoras de desarrollo y progreso económico. Por su parte, Assumpta Dominguez subrayó el lazo perdurable en el tiempo que une a Citrosol con Potríes, y destacó la importancia para el municipio de contar con unas instalaciones de vanguardia.

a Asociación Valenciana de Agricultores (AVA-ASAJA) y la Asociación Empresarial para la Protección de las Plantas (AEPLA) presentaron a los medios la Finca Experimental ‘Sinyent’, puesta en marcha en 2011 en Polinyà de Xúquer (Valencia) y que tras cinco años empieza a dar sus primeros frutos.

Cristóbal Aguado, chairman of AVA-ASAJA, explains that “it is an example of ‘local research’ imagined, conceived and designed for carrying out trials and transferring technology easily and efficiently to the members of AVA-ASAJA, which allows them to be equipped with the essential tools to face up to challenges the future will bring”.

The farm, which covers 25.30 hectares, brings together suitable weather and soil conditions and the correct size for the agronomical trials. These are carried out on over 20 different crops: citrus fruits, persimmons, olives, almonds, walnuts, carobs, cherries, blueberries, flat nectarines, flat peaches, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, pomegranates, litchis, avocados, kiwis, table grapes, winemaking grapes, vegetables, rice and forestry.

La finca, que cuenta con una extensión de 25,30 hectáreas, reúne las condiciones climatológicas, edafológicas y de dimensiones adecuadas para el objetivo de los ensayos agronómicos. Estos se llevan a cabo en más de 20 cultivos diferentes: cítricos, caqui, olivo, almendro, nogal, algarrobo, cereza, arándano, platerina, paraguayo, melocotón, nectarina, albaricoque, ciruelo, granado, litchi, aguacate, kiwi, uva de mesa, uva de vinificación, hortícolas, arroz y silvicultura.

TomGEM is a project included in the Horizonte 2020 programme, which funds research and innovation projects within a European context. The initiative involves the participation by 17 universities and research centres from eight countries (France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Argentina and Taiwan).

The Agrifood and Cooperative manager from the Cajamar Group, Roberto García, asserts that “we are analysing the behaviour of the different wild varieties and species in high temperatures for future crossing of possible material with high temperature stress resistance genes and commercial tomatoes and therefore, obtaining new heat-resistant varieties”.

urante los próximos cuatro años, en las instalaciones de la Fundación Cajamar en Paiporta (Valencia) se va a comprobar la evolución de unas 1.000 especies y variedades de tomate a temperaturas elevadas, en un intento de modelizar la situación que el cambio climático puede provocar a nivel mundial en los próximos años.

TomGEM es un proyecto incluido en el programa Horizonte 2020, que financia proyectos de investigación e innovación en el contexto europeo. La iniciativa cuenta con la colaboración de 17 universidades y centros de investigación de ocho países (Francia, Reino Unido, Alemania, España, Italia, Bulgaria, Argentina y Taiwán).

El director de Negocio Agroalimentario y Cooperativo de Grupo Cajamar, Roberto García, afirma que “estamos analizando el comportamiento de diferentes variedades y especies silvestres frente a las altas temperaturas, para en el futuro cruzar posible material con presencia de genes de resistencia al estrés por altas temperaturas con tomates comerciales, y así obtener nuevas variedades resistentes al calor”.

iu Mau-Wah, co-chairman of China’s largest integrated fresh produce business, Joy Wing Mau Group; CEO of global kiwifruit marketer Zespri, Lain Jager; and the chief merchandising officer for Sam’s Club China, Neil Maffey, are just some of the high-profile figures lined up to speak at this year’s Asiafruit Congress in Hong Kong.

This year’s Asiafruit Congress kicks off with a keynote session focusing on the future of the Chinese market. China has quickly emerged as one of the most attractive and lucrative markets for global fresh produce suppliers. But a recent slowdown in the economy has prompted questions over its future trajectory.

On-hand to explain what is happening at a consumer level in China will be Youchi Kuo, who leads Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) China Center for Customer Insight. Kuo will set the scene for the session with her expert perspective on the evolution of China’s consumer market.

A panel of senior industry executives will then join Kuo to discuss the implications of these changes for China’s fresh produce business – and the future market outlook.

¿Cómo se valora la evolución de Fruit Attraction para este año?

En 2016 prevemos la edición más global de Fruit Attraction con la participación estimada de 1.200 empresas expositoras de 40 países, y 55.000 profesionales de 100 países. Uno de los objetivos prioritarios es profundizar en el canal comercializador europeo, y de otros mercados con alto potencial importador, de cara a seguir contribuyendo en el crecimiento de las exportaciones de las empresas.

Innovación, diversidad, calidad y tecnología al servicio de un sector fundamental para la economía mundial. ¿Hay nuevos países que se han sumado al evento?

ruit Today euromagazine talked to Raúl Calleja, Manager of Fruit Attraction, about the expectations for this eighth edition.

How do you assess Fruit Attraction’s evolution for this year?

In 2016 we are predicting the most global edition of Fruit Attraction, with the estimated participation of 1,200 exhibiting companies from 40 countries and 55,000 professionals from 100 countries. One of the main aims is to examine the European marketing channel in depth, along with other markets that have a high import potential, with a view to continue contributing to the growth in the companies’ exports. Innovation, diversity, quality and technology serving an essential sector for the world economy.

Are there any new countries that have joined the event?

To date greater participation from all the Spanish regions and very particularly from Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia and Navarra has been recorded. Internationally, an increase in participation by companies from France, Italy and Holland has been noted, along with the incorporation of new countries such as Colombia, Costa Rica and Egypt.

What challenges are being faced at this 2016 edition?

We have to continue consolidating the trade fair, to continue working and investing because it still has a long way to go. Therefore, we must continue to extend our efforts in internationalisation and work on attracting a quality international demand and for this reason we will continue developing an International Buyers Programme, who will invite around 700 international importers, distributors and operators from 80 countries.

Regarding the number of parallel activities at Fruit Attraction, which are the most important ones to be highlighted this year?

In addition to the commercial offer by over 1,200 companies from the fruit and vegetable growing sector, Fruit Attraction will offer a very wide-ranging programme of seminars and parallel activities. At the moment, we are working on this programme, but grapes and tomatoes are going to play leading roles again, as will ecological and organic produce. Logistics and technology will also have their own events. This year we are also backing SmartAgro, the transformation and use of technologies, automating processes to be able to increase productivity of the agricultural holdings.

Hasta la fecha se constata una mayor participación de todas las regiones españolas y muy especialmente de Andalucía, Murcia, Valencia y Navarra. En el ámbito internacional, se ha registrado un incremento en la participación de empresas procedentes de Francia, Italia y Holanda, destacando además la incorporación de nuevos países como Colombia, Costa Rica y Egipto. ¿Qué retos se afrontan en esta edición de 2016?

Tenemos que seguir consolidando la feria, seguir trabajando e invirtiendo porque tiene mucho recorrido. De esta manera, es necesario seguir ampliando nuestros esfuerzos en la internacionalización, y trabajar en atraer una demanda internacional de calidad y por eso seguiremos desarrollando un Programa de compradores internacionales, que invitará a alrededor de 700 importadores, distribuidores y operadores internacionales de 80 países.

En cuanto al número de actividades paralelas de Fruit Attraction, ¿cuáles son las más importantes a resaltar este año?

Además de toda la oferta comercial de más 1.200 empresas del sector hortofrutícola, Fruit Attraction ofrecerá un amplísimo programa de jornadas y actividades paralelas.

Estamos en estos momentos trabajando en dicho programa, pero la uva y el tomate volverán a tener un gran protagonismo, al igual que los productos ecológicos y orgánicos. La logística y la tecnología tendrán también sus eventos. Apostamos tambien este año por el SmartAgro, la transformación y el uso de las tecnologías, automatizando procesos de forma que permitan incrementar la productividad de las explotaciones agrarias.

part from the figures, Mercabarna continues to step on the gas to maintain its ‘pole position’. Along with what will be, over the next 5 years, some renewed and modern structures, Mercabarna is a hotbed of initiatives and projects with the purpose of getting ahead of the trends in a sector that is permanently evolving, by way of the joint participation of management and businessmen.

The Market’s general manager, Josep Tejedo, told Fruit Today that “the future lines of action will be closely linked to social commitment and respect for the environment”.

Regarding this commitment, it is worth mentioning that Mercabarna has a programme of scholarships for funding the employment of university leavers from the agrifood sector or unemployed people who are taught a profession. “In addition to contributing in the fight against unemployment for both youth and over 45s, we also promote companies’ competitiveness with the incorporation of these graduates, who can increase knowledge and introduce innovation”, Tejedo qualifies.

“75% of the university scholarship holders have been hired by companies in the Food Unit and this figure reaches 60% in the case of the hiring of unemployed workers.”

El director general del Mercado, Josep Tejedo, ha señalado a Fruit Today que “las futuras líneas de actuación tendrán un importante componente con el compromiso social y el respeto por el medio ambiente”.

Evidentemente, aunque el mercado mantiene una tónica muy positiva con las exportaciones, no acabaremos el año con estas cifras tan benévolas. ¿Existe un relanzamiento del producto de proximidad?

Las cifras tradicionalmente nos demuestran que sobre el 20% del producto que se vende en el Mercado es catalán. Otra cosa es el producto de proximidad, entendido como tal, o sea el procedente de la cuenca del Llobregat o del Maresme.

En este sentido, tenemos intención de valorizar estas producciones modernizando la zona del Mercado dedicada a los agricultores de proximidad y a las cooperativas agrícolas.

También identificaremos toda la producción catalana que se comercializa en Mercabarna, tanto la que venden directamente los propios productores como la de los mayoristas. Todo ello servirá para realzar la presencia del producto local y promover su consumo.

Por otra parte, el empresario mantiene que la imagen negativa que se ha tenido históricamente del asentador de frutas se ha superado porque éste se ha convertido en un profesional responsable, capaz de dar un buen servicio y mantener unas estructuras que hagan viable cualquier transacción, es decir se ha convertido en un profesional dentro de la cadena.

La firma, con 15 paradas, una de las que mayor número posee, sigue creciendo tanto en su venta de pasillo como en sus exportaciones e importaciones. “Este año hay cierto déficit de naranjas y nosotros las estamos importando de Grecia, Turquía y Sudáfrica. Es generalizado para toda la compañía, pero lo cierto es que el aumento en banana y plátano ha sido muy considerable desde 2008, año en el que adquirimos la firma Valentín Pastor. Realizamos unas fuertes inversiones en cámaras de maduración y a día de hoy llegamos a unos 30 contenedores de media en banana y a 15 de plátano de Canarias. Y éste es un proyecto que seguiremos potenciando.

Por otro lado, el melón con nuestra marca Cosarica es un referente.

Actualmente, somos uno de los principales productores de melón piel de sapo a través de nuestra filial productiva CMR BRASIL, contando con 1.300 ha de terreno de cultivo. Allí cultivamos melón amarillo, sandía y en piel de sapo llegamos a los 15 millones de kilos, lo que nos permite suministrar de forma continuada desde octubre hasta mayo un producto de gran calidad, y en el que controlamos toda la cadena de valor hasta nuestro cliente.

Otra gama de productos con un comportamiento muy positivo es la de berries, que mantenemos durante las 52 semanas del año, tanto de procedencia nacional como internacional. Nuestra oferta es muy completa, en producto, variedades y orígenes, destacando especialmente el arándano con el que en época estival llegamos a los 20.000 kilos comercializados.

We keep in touch with shippers from the 5 continents on a daily basis, which allows us to have a very wide range of produce throughout the entire year.

By the way, what can you tell us about the offices you have in Holland?

We process sales to Central, Northern and Eastern Europe from this office, particularly out-of-season fruit from South America and Africa. Recently, we have renewed and promoted the sales team from this unit, managed from the head office in Barcelona.

With the high number of stands you have in both Mercabarna and in Madrid, can you give me your diagnosis regarding corridor sales?

Nuestros volúmenes de importación continúan creciendo año tras año. Seguimos potenciando esta área, con un departamento muy activo, que sigue abriendo nuevos orígenes y conservando e impulsando los más importantes.

Diariamente mantenemos contacto con remitentes de los 5 continentes, lo que nos permite disponer de una gama de productos muy amplia durante todo el año.

Por cierto, ¿qué puede destacar de la sede que poseen en Holanda?

Desde esta oficina gestionamos ventas a centro, norte y este europeo, especialmente fruta de contraestación procedente de Sudamérica y África. Recientemente hemos renovado e impulsado el equipo comercial de esta unidad, dirigido desde la sede central de Barcelona.

Con el elevado número de paradas que poseen tanto en Mercabarna como en Madrid, ¿me puede dar su diagnóstico de la venta en pasillo?

Lo cierto es que nuestro crecimiento no está basado en el gran retail. No obstante, la potenciación de la categoría de bananas y plátanos nos ha facilitado las conexiones con este sector que reclama origen, volúmenes y suministro continuo y nosotros lo podemos ofrecer. Nuestros principales clientes de este sector, son cadenas más pequeñas y de tipo regional.

The truth is that our growth is not based on large retail outlets. However, the promotion of the banana and plantain category has provided us with the connections within this sector that require source, volumes and continuous supply and we can offer this as well. Our main customers from this sector are smaller, regional chains.

What are CMR’s future projects?

On the one hand, we will continue promoting the space for banana ripening in Barcelona and in Madrid.

On the other, we will consolidate our position as a reference for quality, production and marketing of watermelons, yellow melons and particularly off-season piel de sapo melons in Europe. We will also continue to promote our Import and Export Department, increasing produce sources, varieties and availabilities throughout the year, as well as the retail sector, extending our portfolio and channels.

Traditionally closely linked to citrus fruit product (due to the company’s origin as a producer in the Valencian town of Faura), it complements its summer offer with melons and watermelons using the brand name Escrig Gourmet.

Throughout the entire year, all kinds of fruit and vegetables are present on their stalls in Mercabarna and Mercamadrid, with the tropical fruit category being the latest incorporation over the past few years.

Vicente Escrig, in charge of the company at the Catalonian market tells us that “tropical fruits have suffered from the ups and downs of the economic crisis, but now their consumption is on the rise and this can be seen on the stalls every day.”

We have had a positive strawberry campaign and within this boom that the berry category is experiencing, the blueberry has played an important role, and we have always had a faithful supply from Huelva,” Vicente Escandell, an executive from the Catalonian company explains.

“It is true that Spain has no consumer culture for blueberries, but it is taking off somewhat since the health benefits they provide are beginning to become known. It is strange that we are one of the large producers, and yet, it is only now that consumption is starting to become common.”

Regarding the fruit from this season, Escandell believes that the good behaviour of the flat peach is due to its sweet flavour throughout the entire campaign. “When customers know about this aspect, they remain loyal to this fruit.”

Cherries from Aragón are taking off this year, particularly in the middle harvest, due to their good quality and large size, compared to cherries from Jerte, which have had a poor harvest, with high prices.

Regarding the different purchasing communities on the market, the executive states that “the Chinese are taking over from the old shopkeepers and every day they are looking for better quality produce. They have learnt very quickly and they do not buy fruit they have not tried yet and unless it has good flavour”.

Respecto a la fruta de la actual temporada, Escandell cree que el buen comportamiento del paraguayo se debe a su sabor dulce durante toda la campaña. “Cuando el cliente conoce este aspecto, se mantiene fiel a esta fruta.”

La cereza de Aragón despunta este año, sobre todo en la cosecha media, por su buena calidad y gran calibre, frente a la del Jerte, que mantiene una cosecha escasa y con altos precios.

En cuanto a las diversas comunidades compradoras que existen en el mercado, el directivo asegura que “los chinos están supliendo la figura del tendero antiguo y cada día buscan mayor calidad de producto. Han aprendido muy rápido y no compran una fruta que no hayan probado y tenga un buen sabor”.

Bargosa ha sido siempre una empresa consolidada que ha vivido cierto ostracismo mediático no de acorde a su potencial. ¿Qué nuevas líneas estratégicas ha planteado su llegada?

ince then, and backed by good figures, the company has strengthened its foundations on the different channels. Fruit Today euromagazine talked to him about the strategic changes made and the actions that will be taken in the future.

Bargosa has always been a consolidated company that has experienced some media ostracism, not in line with its potential. What new strategic lines has your arrival brought with it?

It is true. Our turnover and invoicing position us as one of the top companies, specifically, the second in the ranking. However, our policy has always been very discreet, without any exhibitionism. My arrival a year ago, along with the great work and know-how of the team at Bargosa, have meant an increase in diversification of customers and produce portfolio, a higher penetration share on the wholesale markets and a wide range open to export lines through Europe and Asia. All of this, solely aimed at preventing the normal peaks and troughs that occur during the different months of the year. And of course, I believe that the times have changed and we must join the world of communications and social networks.

Are the wholesale markets that important?

Yes, of course they are. We believe that we must be present not only commercially, but also physically. In fact, we have just opened Bargosa Valencia at Mercovasa and we have also modernized our offices in Alicante to promote the important Mediterranean Arc. This channel is very important and we continue maintaining contact at other geographical points to close transactions. We have also acquired the signs of the company Fresa in Barcelona and Zaragoza, which now forms an integral part of the company. And in the near future, we will start up some refurbishment work in Barcelona.

Cierto. Nuestro volumen y facturación nos sitúan como una de las grandes, la segunda en concreto. Sin embargo, nuestra política ha pasado por ser muy discreta, sin exhibicionismos. Mi llegada hace un año, junto con el gran trabajo y saber hacer del equipo de Bargosa, ha significado un aumento en diversificación de clientes y porfolio de productos, una mayor cuota de penetración en los mercados mayoristas y un abanico abierto a líneas de exportación por Europa y Asia. Todo ello, con el único objetivo de evitar picos de sierra en los diferentes meses del año. Y por supuesto, creo que los tiempos han cambiado y debemos incorporarnos al mundo de la comunicación y las redes sociales. ¿Tanto interés representan los mercados mayoristas?

Sí, por supuesto, creemos que debemos estar presentes no sólo comercialmente sino físicamente. De hecho, acabamos de abrir Bargosa Valencia en Mercovasa y hemos modernizado nuestra sede en Alicante para potenciar el importante arco mediterráneo.

Este canal es muy importante y seguimos manteniendo contacto en otros puntos geográficos para cerrar operaciones. También en Barcelona y Zaragoza, hemos adquirido los carteles de la compañía Fresa, que ya forman parte integral de la firma. Y en breve, iniciaremos obras de remodelación en Barcelona. ¿Tiene constancia matemática de los resultados desde su llegada?

Hasta el momento, y desde enero a mayo hemos crecido en unos 3 millones de kilos y 2 millones de facturación respecto al año pasado, en una campaña que no ha sido fácil en algunas de las importaciones.

Do you have a mathematical record of the results since your arrival?

To date, and from January to May we have grown by around 3 million kilos and 2 million in invoicing compared to last year, in a campaign that has not been easy for some imports.

Portugal has always been an important market place for the company. Have you made any changes?

There is a new team, directed by a manager who is focused on the retail sector, where we had a significant shortage. In fact, Portugal is showing some very good results and virtually 50% of our growth figures are due to this market place. In order to strengthen our presence, we are going to build 5 new ripening rooms for plantains with an investment of 300,000 euros.

Export is a new channel being explored by Bargosa, what results is it giving?

Portugal ha sido una plaza importante para la compañía. ¿Se ha realizado algún cambio?

Hay un nuevo equipo dirigido por un gestor muy enfocado al retail, donde teníamos una importante carencia. De hecho, Portugal nos está dando muy buenos resultados y nuestras cifras de crecimiento le deben casi un 50% a esta plaza. Para afianzar nuestra presencia, vamos a construir 5 nuevas cámaras de maduración para banana con una inversión de 300.000 euros.

Thanks to our direct sourcing in different places all over the world, export was a channel that we had to take on, particularly in the categories where we are strong and very particularly for plantains and melons.

La exportación es un nuevo canal explorado por Bargosa, ¿qué resultados está dando?

The results have been surprising. In plantains we reached 25 containers per week. In melons, we are pushing back the boundaries in France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Asia. Pineapples are moving at a rhythm that is slower, but surer. The results of this new channel are reaching 5 million euros this year, starting from zero.

Gracias a nuestro “sourcing” directo en distintos lugares del mundo, la exportación era un canal que debíamos abordar, sobre todo en las categorías en las que somos fuertes y muy especialmente en banana y melón.

With regard to the company’s traditional categories, have there been any changes? And in the brand names?

The banana-plantain twosome is a basic category at Bargosa which has given us an important penetration rate in the retailers. We receive around 50 million kilos of Canary bananas from our associate Europlátano and our production curve is very well positioned with the sale demand.

Although we are well-known for our melon imports, the truth is that we work with melons 52 weeks a year, which means that we have ad hoc professionals in the different Spanish production regions.

Regarding pineapples, in addition to the ones we traditionally have worked with under our brand name Florencia, we are panellists for Del Monte and we now have a special interest in distributing the yellow pineapple, SuperSweet, a category with a high level of acceptance.

We are revaluing our own brand name, Solen, therefore many of our imports are prepared and valued to be distributed.

Los resultados han sido sorprendentes. En banana llegamos a los 25 contenedores semanales. En melón estamos ampliando fronteras en Francia, Italia, Polonia, la República Checa y Asia. La piña lleva un ritmo más lento, pero seguro. Los resultados de este nuevo canal se cifran en 5 millones de euros en este año, viniendo de cero.

Respecto a las categorías tradicionales de la firma, ¿se han producido cambios? ¿Y en las marcas?

El binomio plátano-banana es una categoría básica en Bargosa que nos ha dado un gran nivel de penetración en los retailers.

Recibimos unos 50 millones de kilos de plátanos de Canarias de nuestro socio Europlátano y tenemos muy bien posicionada la curva de producción con la demanda de venta.

Aunque somos conocidos por nuestras importaciones de melón, lo cierto es que trabajamos el melón durante las 52 semanas del año, lo que significa que contamos con profesionales ad hoc en las distintas regiones españolas de producción.

En piña, además de la que tradicionalmente hemos trabajado con nuestra marca Florencia, somos panelistas de Del Monte y ahora tenemos un interés especial en distribuir la piña amarilla, Super Sweet, una categoría que tiene mucha aceptación.

Estamos en proceso de revalorización de nuestra marca propia Solen, por lo que muchas de nuestras importaciones son reconfeccionadas y valorizadas para ser distribuidas.

Overseas Overseas imports are growing in the LC Group Over the past five years, the LC Group has become one of the most important European specialists in overseas imports of Ercolina pears.

La importación de ultramar crece en ultramar el Grupo LC Desde hace cinco años, el grupo LC se ha convertido en uno de los mayores especialistas europeos de pera procedente de ultramar.

a compañía, que tiene en Mercabarna su sede central, continúa su tónica de crecimiento y especialización en las importaciones de ultramar. De hecho, el grupo LC ostenta los primeros puestos como importador de pera Ercolina chilena en Europa y sus volúmenes siguen aumentando.

La pera Ercolina, o Coscia como se le conoce, que llega de la mano del coloso Unifrutti, entre otros, concentra su campaña de febrero a junio. Sólo en 2016, el volumen de importaciones de la compañía española de este producto ha llegado al millón de kilos.

El 80% del producto es absorbido por el mercado español. “Se trata de una fruta que está experimentando un fuerte crecimiento y las grandes cadenas de distribución han apostado por ella”, explica Lorenzo Carrasco, directivo de la firma.

he company, with its head offices in Mercabarna, continues its trend towards growth and specialisation in overseas imports. In fact, the LC group holds the first positions as an importer of Chilean Ercolina pears in Europe and its volumes continue to rise.

The Ercolina or Coscia pear, which comes from the giant Unifrutti amongst others, concentrates its campaign from February to June. In 2016 alone, the Spanish company’s imports of this produce have reached a million kilos.

80% of the produce is absorbed by the Spanish market. “It is a fruit that has experienced a strong growth and the large distribution chains have decided to back it”, Lorenzo Carrasco, an executive from the company explains.

Rise in imports. LC’s import department is undergoing an expansion phase, not only with new sources, but also with more references. Its operating range continues to expand and Peru has become an outstanding source, not only for grapes, but also for mangos. “We have backed overseas mangos, only shipped by air to ensure that they are flavourful and we are obtaining some extraordinary business results. And logically, we are also bringing Peruvian avocados from the same source. Both are products that are rising in popularity,” the executive explains.

Furthermore, direct exports are also one of the business lines that the group is strengthening. “We are looking for new opportunities for the produce, both by air and by sea, with destinations that are becoming more and more usual every year: Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Guinea, the Arab Emirates, etc.”

Aumento de las importaciones. El departamento de importación de LC vive momentos de expansión, no solo con nuevos orígenes sino con más referencias. Su radio de acción se sigue ampliando y Perú se ha convertido en un origen destacable, no sólo con uva, sino también con mango. “Hemos apostado por un mango de ultramar sólo por avión para que sea un producto de sabor y estamos manteniendo unos resultados comerciales extraordinarios. Y con el mismo origen, lógicamente también traemos aguacate peruano. Ambos son productos al alza,” explica el ejecutivo.

Por otro lado, las exportaciones directas también son una de las vías de negocio que el grupo está fortaleciendo. “Buscamos nuevas salidas a los productos tanto por avión como por barco, con destinos que se hacen más usuales cada año: Senegal, Costa de Marfil, Guinea, los Emiratos Árabes, etc.”

En las producciones nacionales la firma no ha perdido un ápice de su fuerza respecto a sus especialidades, ligadas a las diferentes zonas productivas de Murcia, Almería, Sevilla, Aragón, Valencia o la propia Cataluña.

Uno de los soportes comerciales de la compañía es su alta especialización: manzana italiana, uva chilena y peruana, aguacate y mango nacional y de importación, y un largo etc.

Regarding national productions, the company has not lost any of its strength in its specialities, linked to the different production areas of Murcia, Almeria, Seville, Aragon, Valencia or Catalonia itself.

One of the company’s business props is its high degree of specialisation: Italian apples, Chilean and Peruvian grapes, national and imported avocadoes and mangos, taken from a long list.

Own production. With the hallmark of their sales experience, in 2013 the company changed its direction and started its production adventure on the farm: “La Pequeña Holanda”, the great project for the present and the future.

Located in the province of Cadiz, near to Arcos de la Frontera, on 255 hectares of perfectly irrigated land on which all kinds of top quality vegetables are grown: cauliflowers, broccoli, leeks, artichokes, etc.

The activity on “La Pequeña Holanda” has not stopped since last August, the month when work is carried out on the seedbeds, until June. Over 100 people work in its preparation warehouse, preparing high quality produce, mainly destined for foreign markets. “Although it is quite likely that we will start working with national chains that have already shown an interest in the high quality of the vegetables produced on our land,” Lorenzo Carrasco, the Group’s founder explains.

Producción propia. Abanderados por su gran experiencia co-

mercial, en 2013 la firma da un golpe de timón e inicia su aventura productiva en la finca de “La Pequeña Holanda”, el gran proyecto de presente y futuro.

Situada en la provincia de Cádiz, cerca de Arcos de la Frontera, en un terreno de regadío idílico con 255 hectáreas en el que se cultivan todo tipo de hortícolas de gran calidad: coliflores, brócoli, puerros, alcachofas, etc.

La actividad en “La Pequeña Holanda” no cesa desde agosto, mes en el que se trabaja en el semillero, hasta junio. En su almacén de confección trabajan más 100 personas elaborando un producto de alta calidad, que en su gran mayoría va destinado hacia los mercados exteriores. “Aunque resulta bastante probable que comencemos a trabajar con cadenas nacionales que ya han mostrado su interés en la alta calidad de hortícolas que da nuestra tierra,” explica Lorenzo Carrasco, fundador del grupo.

Andreu Rodríguez, coordinador de Morales e Hijos, explica que “la maduración del plátano y la banana es un proceso artesanal y complejo, que debe ser tratado por especialistas. El origen y la época del año, además de otros parámetros, son muy importantes a la hora de madurar el producto.”

nd the fact is that bananas hold the first position regarding marketed volume, followed by plantains. The company, integrated into the Eurobanan group, has its supply guaranteed through Coplaca, the largest organisation of producers from the so-called ‘Fortunate Islands’.

Andreu Rodríguez, coordinator at Morales e Hijos, explains that “the ripening of bananas and plantains is a complex process, carried out by hand by specialists. The source and the time of year, as well as other parameters are very important when ripening the produce.”

The company is also linked to the citrus fruit production sector in the Valencian town of Corbera, where it has its own production and it also has a preparation warehouse.

In addition to this, it is a panellist for important brands such as Zespri in kiwis, Marlene in Italian apples or pineapples under the brand name of Isla Bonita. And it uses this same brand name

to market a wide range of tropical fruits such as papayas, mangos, avocados, limes, Brazilian melons and other more exotic ones such as physalis (cape gooseberries), passion fruit, etc.

For summer seasonal fruit, the company has close links with producers from the Lerida region and the production is marketed under its own brand name, ‘Morales’.

New Zealand kiwis are the third product marketed and this produce is prepared and distributed to the different customers from here.

“At our warehouse we adapt to the different formats required by our customers and these really include a wide variety. From here, we reship a broad range of preparations, for bananas, kiwis and for other products”, the coordinator explains.

Mercabarna’s infrastructures are made up of 10 stands in the market, 20 banana ripening rooms and an extensive distribution and preparation warehouse.

The warehouse, located on the ZAC, has a clean room for preparing natural juices and freshly cut fruit that reaches the different retailers.

In recent times, the area used for the production and marketing of ecological produce has taken on particular importance; a space that is outlined and perfectly separated from the conventional produce.

The company maintains a marketed volume of around 60 million kilos.

El kiwi neozelandés es el tercer producto comercializado y desde aquí se confecciona y distribuye a los diferentes clientes. “En nuestro almacén nos adaptamos a los diversos formatos que nos demandan los clientes y que realmente resultan muy variados. Desde aquí reexpedimos en un sin fin de confecciones, tanto en plátano como en kiwi o en otros productos” explica el coordinador.

Las infraestructuras de Mercabarna están formadas por 10 puestos en el mercado, 20 cámaras de maduración de plátanos y un amplio almacén de distribución y confección.

El almacén, ubicado en la ZAC, cuenta con una sala blanca para la elaboración de zumos naturales y fruta cortada que llega a los diferentes retailers.

En los últimos tiempos ha adquirido especial importancia el área destinada a la producción y comercialización de producto ecológico; espacio delimitado y perfectamente separado de los productos convencionales.

La compañía mantiene un volumen comercializado en torno a los 60 millones de kilos.

“Evidentemente para los productores el año no ha sido bueno debido a los bajos precios de retorno, pero el mercado ha tenido una buena respuesta de consumo,” explica José María Ruiz, directivo de la compañía.

A pesar de haber vivido una situación de sobreproducción, el consumo se ha mantenido. “De hecho, este año el descenso de consumo que se produce cuando llega el verano ha sido más suave porque estábamos llevándonos cuota de consumo de la fruta de hueso, que mantenía unos precios bastante elevados,” asegura Ruiz.

“The plantain always fluctuates more than the banana and it is usually below the price for Canary Island produce, which has already meant that in Catalonia more plantains are eaten than bananas. In the school dining rooms, plantains are usually served and the children no longer draw curved bananas, but almost straight ones, shaped like a plantain.”

However, the company, which only specialises in this category, is remaining loyal to the Canary Island produce. “I do not believe that the day will come for us when we sell more plantains than bananas. Consumers still know that bananas are sweeter and this is an added bonus. Additionally, in our company there is a tradition, a commitment to this produce and its source, and above all, a know-how, which allows us to offer the best quality.”

And on this point, he explains that ripening is not a simple process and although the latest programmes on computers are available, the activity still uses human or personal skills since the colour that the banana will have when it leaves the ripening room, the day of availability, the customer’s requirements, etc. must all be known.

“La banana siempre mantiene menos fluctuaciones que el plátano y suele estar por debajo en precio respecto al producto canario, lo que ya ha provocado que en Cataluña se consuman más bananas que plátanos. En los catering de los colegios, se sirve habitualmente banana y los niños ya no dibujan los plátanos curvados, sino casi rectos, con forma de banana.”

No obstante, la firma, especializada únicamente en esta categoría, se mantiene fiel al producto canario. “No creo que para nosotros llegue el día en que vendamos más banana que plátano. El consumidor todavía sabe que el plátano es más dulce y eso supone un plus. Además, en nuestra empresa hay una tradición, un compromiso con este producto y su origen, y sobre todo un saber hacer, que permite ofrecer la mejor calidad.”

Y en este mismo sentido, explica que la maduración no es un proceso sencillo y aunque se disponga de los programas más avanzados en ordenadores, la actividad tiene todavía mucho de artesanal o personal ya que se debe conocer el color con el que saldrá el plátano de cámara, el día de disponibilidad, la necesidad del cliente, etc.

The company specialises in citrus fruits. With good reason Sanahuja was established as a producing and marketing company in Burriana (Castellón). Its strong point is the clementine, although in recent years, it has been heavily committed to oranges. The company was a pioneer in the presentation of the leafed Clemenule as a guarantee of its freshness.

The citrus marketing volume is progressively increasing, as is the percentage of its own production. During the summer season, the company continues selling oranges, making a selection of imported product, as well as its well-known work in melons and watermelons which, after years of experience, reinforce the brand’s quality in all its produce.

“Our business policy is based on caution and on good work and therefore, we concentrate on the brand and on just a few products, as well as on exhaustively planning the campaigns. We have always preferred to have clear targets in the short and medium term. Now we have already prepared the citrus campaign from the first Clemenrubí to the Navelate,” the executive concludes.

Keeping a brand at a top quality level, over many campaigns and years, is a job that requires a great deal of effort by the entire business team.

The latest campaigns are showing an unequal trend in two products that have a fierce competition: watermelons and melons.

he balance is tipping towards the watermelon, both in surface area-production and in value-prices.

In fact, watermelons are becoming more and more consolidated as having a clearly export orientation, with 75% of the production directed towards the foreign markets, as opposed to 51% held by melons, according to data supplied by Coexphal.

The decline in melons is obvious in the areas where the production is basically aimed at export, such as Andalusia and Murcia. In fact, Coexphal has noted the massive presence on the European market of Moroccan melons, but also melons from overseas (Brazil and Costa Rica), as the main cause for this drop in the surface-production and price-value trend for this product.

Therefore, the average price for melons in 2015 dropped by 3.2% (0.61€/kg) compared to the previous year (0.63€/ kg), according to Customs information. Offsetting this, the average price for watermelons in 2015 increased by 9.8% compared to the previous year (0.41€/kg), reaching 0.45 euros per kilo.

The surface area covered in Spain by the watermelon crop reaches 17,900 hectares (mainly centred in Andalusia (50%); Valencia (18%) and Murcia (12%)), which represents a total production of 869,000 tonnes of which 654,586 were sent to foreign markets in 2015, mainly European ones, for a value of 299.1 million euros.

The Spanish watermelon export figures over the past year represent a 17.3% increase in volume and a 27.6% increase in value and they exceed those shown by melons, where

This important commitment to local produce has been possible thanks to another of the expansion movements that the company carried out 4 years ago, with the start up of a warehouse in the town of Viver, where it performs the entire control process for its 25 associate farmers.

En la categoría de frutas, Algitama es especialmente conocida por sus melones y sandías de la misma marca y durante el inverno, por sus mandarinas con hoja.

El melón de Algitama es cuidado con esmero desde el primer momento. En su proceso en el almacén pasa por varios tratamientos: se lava, se enjuaga, se seca, recibe un proceso de cera ecológica y vuelve a secarse.

“El proceso de lavado lo iniciamos hace 22 años y es necesario para que el producto reciba bien la cera,” explica el directivo.

“Podemos presumir de que fuimos una de los primeros operadores que apostaron por un melón pequeño, el Mini Oro, (variedad Ricura y Finura), cuyo peso oscila entre 1,4 y 1,8 kilos y que siempre ha sido muy bien aceptado en las zonas de turismo de costa,” explica Gil.

t this new edition, held on the 11th and 12th of July on the RZ research property El Arquillo in Cartagena, over 200 marketers, retailers and distributors from 15 different countries in Europe, America, Asia and Africa came together to discover firsthand the solutions offered by RijkZwaan, with varieties that adapt to consumers’ needs, seeking the best quality and flavour on the supermarket shelves.

Innovation. During the field days, the professionals saw the characteristics of the new materials for the processing industry and innovation in orange and yellow flesh, along with new formats. The tastings carried out in the networking area back RijkZwaan’s commitment to flavour and firmness.

Diego Maestre, Crop Coordinator for Melons, Watermelons and Courgettes from RZ stated that “innovation as part of the progress philosophy at RijkZwaan has been communicated using two work routes, a disruptive route, showing prototypes to those attending that are going to come onto the market in the short and medium term and a second route that relates existing genetics on different markets that can be moved to new areas providing value through solutions for shelf life and flavour.”

Sandissima®, in 3 and 4 kg calibres for watermelons with all skin types and high internal quality.

Whilst the Piel de Sapo continues to lose its fans in the main production areas, the Charantais range is benefitting from the problem of Fusarium in France and it is making a breakthrough in Spain. The French operators have been looking for other areas and production systems. The regions that have benefitted most are Southern Alicante, Murcia and Northern Almeria, where the crops cover an area that is clearly over 2,000 hectares.

“Hay que hacer algo para que el consumidor vuelva a recuperar la confianza en el melón, lo que ha ocurrido es una responsabilidad compartida entre toda la cadena. Nosotros debemos tener una línea homogénea de producto porque si no el cliente te demoniza y transfiere su compra a la sandía, como ha venido ocurriendo. Aunque es cierto que todo el sector en su conjunto se ha dado cuenta y está rectificando.”

Para Syngenta se dan varios parámetros ineludibles en sus materiales para el Piel de Sapo, por un lado, el sabor (no sólo los grados brix) y por otro, la firmeza y vida media.

Así destacan dos variedades: DOMINIO y ARMERO, que han tenido un gran éxito por su producción, por la protección de la planta y sobre todo por su calidad gustativa.

DOMINIO es una planta de cuaje temprano, de muy buen sabor y carne semidura. Por su parte, ARMERO se adapta a cultivos al aire libre, es de ciclo medio en Murcia. Posee un gran vigor y facilidad de cuaje con un buen comportamiento frente al oídio. La fruta es de gran uniformidad en calibre y forma.

Otras referencias destacables son VELASCO, CERVANTES o IBERICO.

Charantais. La tipología que se está haciendo fuerte en el campo español. Mientras que el Piel de Sapo sigue perdiendo adeptos en las principales zonas productoras, la gama de los Charantais, se beneficia del problema de Fusarium que tiene Francia, y emerge con fuerza en España. The most recent new product presented by the company is called PRESTIGE, a fruit weighing around 4 kilos, with an excellent post-harvest conservation that makes it a product that is very suitable for export. Another new fruit this campaign is a striped, seedless, mini watermelon, BiBo, with excellent internal quality and suitable for growing both under glass and outdoors.

Como adelanto a las futuras demandas de mercado, que permitiría realizar mezclas de colores, aparece la YELLOW BITE, de carne amarilla y textura crujiente, muy dulce y con un peso de de 2,5 a 2,8 kilos. Y el último complemento viene de la mano de DORIN, de piel negra y de 2,5 a 3 kilos y adaptable tanto a invernadero como aire libre.

The proposal is based on preliminary identification work of the main consumer trends in the fruit and vegetable segment and on a subsequent analysis with the sector’s participation.

During the seminar, participating international experts in marketing emphasised the importance of flavour as a selling point, rising even above the price, and the interest in a healthy diet.

Executives from companies such as Ramafrut, Pozo Sur, Hessing and Zenalco (Auchan Group) coincided in acknowledging that flavour must be a top priority.

In addition to this, the experts stated the need to promote, (particularly amongst children), the healthy values of melons and watermelons and the benefits contained by fruit in general. A possible threat was identified regarding the risk presented by certain critics of the excessive consumption of foods that are rich in industrial sugars could damage certain fruits with a high natural sugar content. “The solution lies in a joint effort being made by all the agents involved to ensure correct communication and to make people aware of the different types of sugar, in such a way that the fructose content is always interpreted as it really is: a clear benefit to health, as opposed to other products that are artificially sweetened”, Sjanny vanBeekveld, business manager of the consultancy IRI explained.

New formats. We are in a completely different situation to the two previous campaigns.

Furthermore, there has been no overlapping of productions from different regions. And additionally, the summer temperatures have been right.

Lo importante es que nos estamos manteniendo, ya que nuestro histórico indica que la bajada de precios comenzaba pasado el pico de la Big Top, a partir de mediados de julio. Y la remontada se hacía difícil, y si se producía, lo hacía a finales de agosto, momento en que la cosecha empieza a declinar.

Entonces, ¿qué papel cree ud. que han cumplido las medidas excepcionales? ¿no cree que han sido insuficientes en volúmenes puesto que la campaña tiene una calidad escasa?

Las medidas tienen un efecto tanto real como psicológico. El cupo no ha sido agotado todavía y se ha repartido entre julio y agosto.

Evidentemente, representa un tercio del volumen asignado el año pasado, pero, por el contrario, la medida entró antes en vigor.

Personalmente creo que si hubiéramos tenido necesidad de utilizar más cupo en el mes de julio, lo hubiéramos podido pedir al ministerio, pero no creo que haya sido tan acuciante la situación.

No sabremos nunca en realidad en qué medida han influido los diferentes factores para que esta campaña haya sido más benévola. Pero, personalmente, creo que las retiradas a beneficencia han supuesto un impulso importante.

En otro orden de cosas, quiero destacar que la revisión de precios, dentro de las medidas ordinarias de los Programas Operativos de las OPFH, que durante tanto tiempo hemos reclamado desde nuestra entidad, han sido muy acogidas por el sector, en el que se da

Moving on to other issues, I would like to emphasise that the price review, within the ordinary measures of the OPFH’s (fruit and vegetable producer organisations) Operational Programmes, which we have demanded for so long from our organisation, have been well accepted by the sector, where a 40% increase has occurred for withdrawal prices for peaches and nectarines. Finally, the Commission has ruled in our favour and it has been shown that our requests were not in vain, but rather they were necessary.

The defining issue at the moment seems to be not just maintaining the prices, but rather having the chance to raise them. What would have to happen for this to occur?

The reality of our produce, which is a commodity, is that there is always an operator who can sell it at a lower price. It is difficult to mark the price in a situation like this.

The ideal situation would be a true shortage of produce. And for this to happen, the sector must look for new markets and free the European markets from this pressure.

The only real solution is for the supply and demand to be compensated in our favour and on this point, I think that it is important to point out that the opening up of new markets such as China or others, could play an important role in our favour.

La situación ideal sería aquella en la que se da una auténtica falta producto. Y para que esto se produzca, el sector debe buscar nuevos mercados y liberar a los mercados europeos de esta presión.

La única solución real es que la oferta y la demanda estén compensadas a favor nuestro, y en este sentido, creo que es importante señalar que la apertura de nuevos mercados como el chino, u otros, pueden jugar una importante baza a nuestro favor.

“Oki has reached European markets, particularly the German one and from this point onwards we will begin the long task of replacing our brand name Or de Ponent with Oki,” Josep Presseguer, general manager of Fruits de Ponent explains.

“We don’t want to force the machinery, but rather create a coherent process where a natural change occurs regarding preferences. We have a top quality brand that will be accessible to many consumers. When we have enough strength and volume, we will invest in its promotion,” he qualifies.

Furthermore, “when considering the addition of any flat fruit in the future, such as new varieties of flat nectarines, they will already have a brand name, because Oki is our flagship for flat fruit. And I am sure that, in the years to come, as it occurred with the flat peach, we will have some excellent varieties of flat nectarines.”

The season. Regarding the campaign, the Catalonian executive

consolidating and extending markets in Europe and little by little, making incursions into more distant markets in Asia, the Caribbean or some South American countries.

The island of Cuba, where Fruits de Ponent is already registered as a company, would be one of these destinations. “We are waiting for the protocol to be signed by the Spanish authorities.”

One of the company’s goals, started up several seasons ago, involves the addition of new produce to its commercial portfolio, aimed at maintaining the cooperative group’s activity over a longer period during the year.

And although stone fruit is the company’s productive banner, other references, such as apples, persimmons and kiwis, have all found their place.

Fruits de Ponent, the number one European stone fruit operator marketed a total of 65,000 tonnes in 2015. 80% of its volume is concentrated on the different stone fruit categories (peaches, nectarines, flat peaches, cherries, apricots) and the remainder corresponds to other categories, amongst which high altitude apples stand out.

La isla de Cuba, lugar donde Fruits de Ponent ya se ha registrado como empresa, sería uno de estos destinos. “Estamos a la espera de la firma del protocolo por las autoridades españolas.”

Uno de los objetivos de la compañía, ya iniciado hace varias temporadas, pasa por la incorporación de nuevos productos a su portfolio comercial con el objeto de sustentar la actividad del grupo cooperativo durante una mayor parte del año. Y aunque el hueso es el estandarte productivo, otras referencias como la manzana, el kaki y el kiwi, han encontrado su espacio.

Fruits de Ponent, primer operador europeo de hueso, comercializó un total de 65.000 toneladas en 2015. El 80% de su volumen se concentra en las diferentes categorías de hueso (melocotón, nectarina, paraguayo, cerezas, albaricoques) y el resto se corresponde con otras categorías, entre las que sobresale, la manzana de altura.

Mercados. Además de los destinos tradicionales, en los que siempre ha trabajado la cooperativa, Actel se ha preparado para abordar nuevos mercados, como Sudáfrica, país al que puede llegar la fruta en unos veinte días.

After these two varieties, the ambitious hybrid programme where there are thousands of hybrids under observation, allows the company to predict that in a few years’ time there will be a wide range of apricots in the ultra-early and ultra-late segment. This programme is being carried out in the town of Perpignan, where the breeders invite those interested to try these new achievements.

Tras estas dos variedades, el ambicioso programa de hibridación en el que hay en observación miles de híbridos, permite vaticinar que en pocos años, existirá una amplia gama de albaricoques en el segmento ultraprecoz y ultratardío. Amongst these products Actium stands out, a lipo-complex biostimulant that is the source of the essential acids and vitamins that activate the colouring of the crops.

Actium has the property of neutralising the negative radicals at a the cellular level, reducing the damage produced by them on the fruit, improving the vegetative condition of the plant, preventing the denaturation of proteins and enzymes, regulating the level of solutes and maintaining optimum photosynthetic and respiratory level.

The main effects produced by Actium are that it standardises and improves the colour of the fruit and also increasing its size and turgidity.

Many trials have been carried out on stone fruit in areas of Alicante, Lerida and Murcia, specifically on flat peaches, nectarines and cherries.

The results show an advance of 15 days in the harvesting for 35% of the entire harvest. Actium advances and concentrates the harvest, at the same time as it improves the colour. La dosis recomendada para frutales es de 3 tratamientos de 600 gramos por 1.000 litros de agua cada 10-12 días. El primer tratamiento debe efectuarse justo antes de que la fruta comience a cambiar de color.

Se esperan unos calibres normales y la superficie productiva aumenta cerca de un 2%. La región productora de Girona supondrá el 27% del global de kilos de Cataluña y en Lleida se concentrará el 71% de la producción.

En Lleida, en concreto, la producción será relativamente más alta, un 13%. La floración ha sido, de normal a alta, y el cuajado normal en variedades como Gala, Fuji y Cripps Pink.

Por el contrario, las previsiones de pera en Cataluña indican una tendencia a la baja, debido principalmente a una floración escasa y a una calidad insuficiente para la mayoría de las variedades. Siguiendo la tónica general de los últimos años, la superficie productiva baja ligeramente, en un 1,7%, lo que supone unas 170 hectáreas.

Toni (his real name is Jesús Antonio) is married to Pepa, who is also an executive at Consum. Born in Cuenca 46 years ago, his feeling of being a Valencian runs so deep that, following his land’s tradition, he is in charge of cooking the paella on Sundays. And if that is not enough, he is a member and great fan of Valencia C.F., because his passion before cycling was football, well, to be honest, it was Valencia.

He has always played sport, particularly football, but his age and injuries made him turn to cycling. He is not a weekend sportsman, but rather a seasoned strategist who likes to prepare himself to compete in extreme situations. Therefore, summer and winter, in hot or cold weather, every day he carries out his training sessions. Methodical and a person who likes to follow his planned agenda, he also schedules races throughout the year Therefore, the first one on the calendar is the ‘312’ in Mallorca, followed by the ‘Quebrantahuesos’ (bone breaker), in Sabiñánigo (Huesca), with mountain passes reaching over 3,000 accumulated metres of altitude and the third one, ‘La Maratona de las Dolomitas’ (The Marathon of the Dolomites), over the Alpine foothills in Italy, with the mythical mountain passes used in the Italian Giro race.

But the toughest of them all is still to come, the “Titan Desert”, a race that runs through the hostile land of the Atlas Mountains and the Moroccan desert, with a length of over 700 km and lasting six days.

Toni (su verdadero nombre es Jesús Antonio) está casado con Pepa, también ejecutiva de Consum.

Nacido en Cuenca hace 46 años, se siente tan profundamente valenciano que, siguiendo la tradición de la tierra, es el encargado de hacer la paella los domingos. Por si fuera poco, es socio y seguidor del Valencia C.F. porque su pasión antes que la bicicleta, fue el fútbol, bueno, el Valencia.

Siempre hizo deporte y sobretodo jugaba al fútbol, pero la edad y las lesiones lo reconvirtieron en ciclista. No es un deportista de fin de semana, sino un aguerrido estratega al que le gusta preparase para competir en situaciones extremas. Por eso, verano e invierno, con frío o calor, hace diariamente sus sesiones de entrenamiento. Metódico y hombre de agenda planificada, tiene también su programa de carreras para todo el año.

Así, la primera del calendario es la ‘312’ de Mallorca, después la ‘Quebrantahuesos’, en Sabiñánigo (Huesca), con puertos de montaña de más de 3.000 metros acumulados de altitud y la tercera, ‘La Maratona de las Dolomitas’, territorio prealpino en Italia, con puertos míticos del Giro de Italia.

Pero queda la más dura de todas, la “Titan Desert”, carrera que transcurre por los inhóspitos parajes de las montañas del Atlas y el desierto marroquí, con una trayectoria de más de 700 km y seis días de viaje.

I

was a witness, and to some extent a participant, in his baseline training for 2016-17 in the Sierra Calderona, close to his house. Toni had prepared all the gear necessary and a bicycle, Pepa’s, who he says he “had deceived” in order to introduce her to this passion and share time together.

What type of physical training do you carry out for these races?

Here, in the Calderona, I do two types of training: one more aerobic, consisting of road cycling, which is necessary for trials such as the ‘Titan Desert’ and the skilful type, which involves mountain cycling, with ascents of around 600 metres. This landscape also allows you to do some road climbing, which helps you to maintain this rhythm on your bicycle.

When there are three months left before a trial, you get more demanding and start doing tougher series and routes. You have to arrive at the trial in shape, with a minimum physical fitness, regardless of whether something happens to you later on. The preparation consists of effort.

And what about your training sessions at home?

At home I usually do an hour and a half of knee work and I also work the upper body, since, although it might not seem so, this is very important for a cyclist. As the sessions are long, I take advantage and use them to go over the day’s mail or I watch the news.

I am a completely methodical person and I only improvise when absolutely necessary. I take a lot of what I do at work and use it to mark out the sporting goals I set

myself at the start of the season.

What is your motivation for carrying out a trial as tough as the ‘Titan Desert’?

The truth is that it is a personal challenge, surpassing your personal limits. The knowledge that you can succeed at something that you decide on and you prepare for.

I believe it was someone from the sector who encouraged you to try out this new experience?

Yes, Eduardo Córdoba, who had already taken part. The truth is when we coincided there, I told him he was a b.....d, because it is one thing to imagine it and quite another to experience it. It is very tough; it marks you so much that I will have to repeat it. It has turned into a personal challenge.

Which is the toughest part of the trial?

Without any doubt, the trial itself is tough, but personally I think that the fact of sleeping in a nomad tent, after pedalling for around ten hours or showering in a hut, with a trickle of water, are extreme occasions.

The trial can run through sandy desert, where you cannot pedal and have to put your bike over your shoulder or up a stony 300 metre slope. At times, when you are completely alone, you start believing that you are lost, in spite of having the coordinates.

All of this without mentioning that the temperatures are very high and you need to constantly hydrate yourself, you can get lost, have a fall, an injury, gastroenteritis, your bicycle might breakdown,

ui testigo, y un tanto partícipe, de su entrenamiento base para 2016-17 en la Sierra Calderona, cerca de su casa. Toni me había preparado equipación y una bicicleta, las de Pepa, a la que dice “haber engañado” para acercarla a esta pasión y compartir momentos juntos.

¿Y los entrenamientos en casa?

¿Qué tipo de entrenamiento físico realiza para esta serie de carreras?

Soy una persona absolutamente metódica e improviso sólo lo necesario. Traslado mucho de lo que hago en el trabajo a los objetivos que me marco a principio de temporada para el deporte.

Aquí, en la Calderona, hago dos tipos de entrenamiento: uno más aeróbico, el de rodar, necesario para pruebas como la ‘Titan Desert’ y el de habilidad, que es el de montaña, con subidas de unos 600 metros.

Este paraje te permite también hacer algo de subida en carretera, que te ayuda a mantener esa cadencia en la bicicleta.

Cuando faltan tres meses para una prueba te vuelves exigente y pasas a hacer series y recorridos más duros. Tienes que llegar en forma, con unos mínimos físicos, independientemente de que luego te suceda algo. La preparación consiste en esfuerzo.

En casa suelo hacer una hora y media de rodillo y también trabajo el tren superior, ya que, aunque no lo parezca, es muy importante para un ciclista.

Como las sesiones son largas, aprovecho y repaso los correos del día o veo las noticias.

¿Cuál es la motivación para realizar una prueba tan dura como la ‘Titan Desert’?

En realidad, es un reto personal, como la superación de uno mismo. El conocer que puedes hacer algo que te propones y para lo que te preparas.

Creo que fue alguien del sector quien le alentó a esta nueva experiencia.

Have you had many falls? I can see quite a few marks on your legs Yes, a few. The most recent once occurred when I was in a group and all of them fell and the person next to me took me with him. Although most of my little scars are souvenirs from the ‘Titan’. Sometimes, when you are descending you take a risk to make up for lost

time, you lose your concentration and you fall. The doctors immediately appear, they patch you up and you get back on your bike and continue the race.

Who is your idol in cycling?

Miguel Induráin without any doubt. Not only as a sportsman, but also as a person. I will always admire his values, his savoir-faire, when he let a colleague win a stage because he knew he was the leader of the classification. All of this says a great deal about him.

I saw that the barbecue at your house has a Valencia shield.

Where does football fit in with your life now?

I have not abandoned Valencia. It is still in my heart and whenever I can, I go to watch them play.

Where do you spend your summer holidays?

As we travel a great deal, for many years now, my wife and I have made it a routine to spend a few weeks on the island of Ibiza, very peacefully, surrounded by our family.

cosa es imaginarlo y otra vivirlo. Es una experiencia dura, que te marca tanto, que repetiré. Se ha convertido en un desafío personal. ¿Cuál es la parte más dura de la prueba?

Sin duda, la prueba en sí lo es, pero personalmente creo que el hecho de dormir en una jaima, después de haber pedaleado unas diez horas o ducharte en un barracón, de los que pende un leve chorro de agua, son ocasiones extremas.

La prueba igual transcurre por un desierto de arena, en el que no puedes pedalear y tienes que echarte la bici al hombro como por un desnivel de 300 metros lleno de piedras. En ocasiones, en plena soledad, pensando que, a pesar de las coordenadas, te has perdido.

Todo ello sin mencionar que las temperaturas son altísimas y necesitas hidratación constante, que te puedes perder, tener una caída, una lesión, una gastroenteritis, una rotura en la bicicleta, etc. La línea que divide el acabar la carrera o no es muy frágil, y muchas veces depende de la suerte. ¿Tal y como están las cosas, vivieron algún momento de peligro?

Existe un riguroso control por parte la organización. Aunque un corredor colombiano se perdió y hasta que no lo encontraron pensamos en cualquier posibilidad. ¿Pero usted es un hombre de bicicleta de montaña o de carretera?

Yo soy de carretera, disfruto mucho más, pero la ‘Titan’ aúna ambas cosas, no porque haya carreteras, sino porque el entrenamiento que hacemos los de carretera es necesario para algunas pruebas. ¿Ha sufrido muchas caídas? Le veo unas cuantas señales en las piernas Sí, algunas. La más reciente se produjo cuando en un grupo todos se cayeron, y el que iba a mi lado me enganchó a mí.

Aunque la mayoría de mis pequeñas cicatrices son recuerdos de la ‘Titan’. A veces, ibas bajando y arriesgabas para recuperar el tiempo perdido, perdías la concentración y te caías.

Enseguida acudían los médicos, te curaban, te montabas en la bici y seguías la carrera. ¿Quién es su ídolo en ciclismo?

Sin duda, Miguel Induráin.

No sólo como deportista, sino como persona. Siempre admiré sus valores, su saber estar, cuando dejaba ganar la etapa a su compañero porque se sabía líder de la clasificación. Todo esto dice mucho de él.

He visto que en la barbacoa de su casa tiene un escudo del Valencia. ¿Y el fútbol, qué lugar ocupa ahora en su vida?

Yo no abandono al Valencia.

Sigue en mi corazón y siempre que puedo voy a verlo. ¿Dónde pasa las vacaciones de verano?

Mi mujer y yo, como viajamos bastante, hemos tomado como rutina, desde hace años, pasar unas semanas en la isla de Ibiza, de manera muy tranquila y acompañados de la familia.
