Editor’s Note FRV Travel – It takes you places One of the greatest pleasures of living in Indonesia is the quality of service. People here are naturals. With a genuine, wide open smile, the staff of high-end establishments at least not only appear to love their jobs and are proud of their places of work, but also appear to love their guests. Time and time again we see the simple things as the well trained amongst the service people on the island and around the country give true heartfelt service to their guests. This is obviously in the top establishments more than the cheap cafes and most probably mainly due to the tipping or service charge that the staff receive in these places, but the whole idea of service still comes natural to the people born and raised here. It also comes from good training from talented management and we find this especially in the luxury villas and resorts around the island. There may be hundreds, if not thousands of luxury villas dotted around Bali and the region, but the thing that sets one apart from the other is the standard of service. A beautiful setting, garden or design may be stunning and breathtaking but the essence of a luxury villa stay is the competent and attentive service, without being too intrusive, that we experience in this part of the world. This goes for dining in the best restaurants too. We should always be grateful for

well trained staff. It makes the difference between a wonderful and a mediocre experience. Good service can be found anywhere in the world, for a price of course, but add the Balinese or Indonesian smile into the mix and heavenly service awaits at your door. Once again FRV Travel writers are off travelling around the neighbourhood, country, region and world to bring readers the latest news and experiences of what’s going on out there in fine food and accommodation. We also get off the beaten track on a number of pages going to Japan, Timor, snowboarding in Australia and travelling with DJ Tony Montana on his way to Ibiza from Bali. Bangkok, China and Singapore are featured heavily in this edition and also new establishments in Jakarta, Salt Grill and Kunstkring are given the once over. The team at FRV would like to offer our condolences to family and friends of Felipe Godoy, young Chilean sommelier at Gado-Gado restaurant, on his tragic passing recently. May he rest in peace. [DT]

Mejakawi opens at KU DE TA KU DE TA’s new restaurant Mejekawi is now open and they have once again pushed the bar way beyond the local stratosphere. The new space offers tasting menus, a laboratory type facility, a new outdoor and exclusive lounge area, and uninterrupted views over Seminyak Beach and the Indian Ocean. In short, it is possibly the most extraordinary dining experience to be found in the entire country, let alone the island. Mejekawi, which means ‘sacred table’ in Sanskrit, only has two tasting menus on offer. These two menus showcase progressive, high-technique cuisine with strong influences from local specialties. The seven and 11-course menus are as chef Phil Davenport says, “A taste of modern cuisine and techniques, with Indonesian inspired flavours.” The tasting menus can be paired with a selection of wines from around the globe, all identifying precisely with the dishes served. Each table also has a selection of waiting staff floating to and from the table with small portioned, tasty dishes and excellent wines during the two hour duration of the 11-course meal we experienced on a recent visit. The whole team including Group Executive Chef Phillip Davenport, Executive Chef Ben Cross, Executive Pastry Chef Will Goldfarb, and Bruce Bartholomew creating a new range of cocktails for the bar, have outdone themselves on this occasion. The air-conditioned restaurant space isn’t very large so it would be recommended to book in advance. Tel: +62 361 736969

It’s open, it’s cool and it has similarities to being in a luxury apartment, but it’s also maybe the best dining experience in town.

With customised recipes utilising local produce, and adding the prominent Mangan touch, Salt tapas aims to present fresh menus every six months. Keramas Beach Bali joins the pro surfing tour.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) has officially sanctioned the Oakley Pro Bali, held at Keramas Beach, as part of the ASP World Championship for 2013 to be held on June 18-29. The Bali event will be the 5th of 10 events on the ASP World Championship Tour, representing the first elite tour event in Indonesia since the Rip Curl Pro Search was held here in 2008. The primary venue for the event will be the right-hand break of Keramas, with the beach-breaks at Canggu held in reserve in the need of backup. “Keramas, to me, is the most high-performance wave on the planet,” Jordy Smith, current ASP WCT surfer, said. “Oakley have had their world junior event there for a few years and I’m glued to the computer every time it’s on. To have the Top 34 there, it’s going to be a huge challenge for the judges as the performances are going to be next level. This is really exciting.”
