It’s almost the beginning of the new Balinese year as we distribute this latest edition of FRV Bali. Nyepi falls on March 9 this year. It is a great time to be on Bali and to reset for the coming year, which is 1938 in Bali/Hindu years. FRV Bali will celebrate the New Year in style on Friday March 4 at La Sal restaurant on Jalan Drupadi, Seminyak and if our pre-Christmas show was any indictation, it should be a rollicking, festive night of fun and entertainment. DJs BTK and Local Hero will be supplying the tunes from 10pm. You are all invited. Many business people are saying that by the end of this year we’ll be seeing an upturn in the local economy, which has seen a quite dramatic
downturn over the past year, and especially over the past few months, as the many incentives put in place recently by the Indonesian government begin to have a positive effect on the economy. That, combined with the new summer tourist season fast approaching in Bali, we should see the situation improve quickly on the island. We are all believers in that—in economics we trust. In this edition of FRV Bali, our writers are all over the region once more discovering new places and new ways of travelling them. New writer, Michael Adams takes a wild trip on a 100cc motorcycle from the north to the south of Vietnam – a trip many of us would envy. Thomas Jones is back in NZ climbing glaciers
and mountains in the name of fun. While Vero is searching out the best parts of an Ubud trip – which I’m sure is a trip we all need to do more often. We also have some fantastic fashion shoots in this edition, with one being at The Dharmawangsa Jakarta with DIOR and another very impressive outing with our FRV fashion chief, Morin, here in Bali. There is plenty more fashion, food and accommodation inside. There is always something for everyone in FRV Bali and this time around is no different. ERZA S.T. Erza ST writes for many Indonesian publications and is a regular bon-vivant in his home town of Jakarta. He has been the head honcho of the Indonesian Opera Society for many years and can be caught at many of the classical concerts around the country. He loves winter in European countries as much as he loves good food and conversation in the best restaurants in Jakarta.

THOMAS JONES Travel writing is an admirable and important profession that takes a lot of dedication, hard work and a smidgen of luck to make it pay. Yet despite the hardships, Thomas sees it as a calling to take the opportunities that arise and share the lessons learned with the FRV community. This issue it’s off to New Zealand for a trip around the South Island and some glacier exploration to boot.
SALVADOR B New Yorker, U.S.A., moved to Bali in nineteen eighty three, painter, writer, musician and song writer. Through the years he has been noted as a true renaissance man in that perspective. As a writer he has contributed many an articles on the life styles of Bali as well as interviews, openings, fashion and food reviews.
NICK WALTON Nick has been writing on travel for over 10 years, including most recently as the travel editor for the South China Morning Post. From his home in Hong Kong he regularly travels throughout Asia and beyond, looking for new experiences, trends and destinations, both for his travel pieces in over 60 magazines globally, as well as his weekly radio show.
VERONIKA K Veronika is not only a journalist, but also a professional mermaid and a travel junkie. Praguebased, she has been living life in flip-flops since 2008. If not on her laptop forging words, she can be found playing in the ocean or practicing her headstands. Vero’s hobbies are breakfast, lunch & dinner and writing about herself in the third person.

IT’S A MOVIDA! Movida is the name of a new Spanish restaurant, which is part of the new Katamama hotel, that stands behind Potato Head Beach Club on Petitenget Beach. It opened last month and we had the chance to experience it for the first time. The earthy, wooden tones of the space are in keeping with Spanish and the Potato Head design ethic, and the food, while having some modern twists from the Spanish/Australian curator, Frank Camorra, who now has six Movida restaurants under his belt, is very authentic Spanish fare. Try the selection of tapas, raciones and desserts on the menu to experience what Movida is all about; everything on the menu is delicious or at least the dishes we tried last week. Saludos and we say welcome to another great restaurant in the Bali dining scene.

WHAT’S NEW AT RAFFLES JAKARTA? To begin with there are new faces and concepts at the Jakarta five star hotel. First, new Executive Chef, Daniel Patterson brings with him over 18 years of culinary experience and is overseeing the culinary creations in Arts Café, The Writers Bar, Navina Pool Bar, the Dian Ballroom, meeting rooms and in-room dining. Chef Daniel Patterson is originally from the United Kingdom and joined the hotel from Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, Bangkok, Thailand where he was the Executive Chef. Prior to that, he was the executive chef in a number of five star hotels including Shangri-La and Hyatt. Besides creating new concepts in the many restaurants since arriving his latest baby is the new concept at Nirvana poolside, Chill & Grill. Kicking off on March 4, Chill & Grill is the ultimate barbecue experience in a tropical yet refined setting. Guests can enjoy a wide variety of succulent meats and fresh seafood, including an oyster bar with fine de claire oysters from France, marinated king prawns and a rib-eye steak that is grilled to perfection. This barbecue will be available every first Friday of every month, from 6pm until 9.30pm. We had the opportunity to try the BBQ recently and it comes greatly recommended. Another new face at Raffles is their new Director of Marketing, Martijn Dekker from Holland who has over five years’ experience in Indonesia, first at the RitzCarlton Jakarta, Pacific Place and then JW Marriott Medan.

SHANGHAI BABY BALI MODERN CANTONESE RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE ARRIVES IN PETITENGET A brand-new style restaurant has landed on upcoming dining street, Jalan Petitenget in Bali, Indonesia. Shanghai Baby prides itself on its luxurious surroundings combined with outstanding service and exquisite new style contemporary Cantonese cuisine. It’s the latest creation from Nicholas and Valeria Minniti, whose past projects have included awardwinning private estates, beach clubs and luxury hospitality projects. They have scanned the globe, to put together a world class management and kitchen team including General Manager Din Hakim who have all relocated to Bali to set a new standard to ensure an unforgettable dining experience. The architecture & concept design is by Grant Cheyne in a design collaboration with Nicholas Minniti. Grant Cheyne was behind the renowned Salon D’Hotes in Paris, Rockpool Est.1989, Rockpool Bar and Grill, plus Spice Temple (Perth, Sydney and Melbourne). The interior detailing is by international interior stylist, Caroline Usher. For the first time, “cutting” edge style, and design are combined with a see-and-must-be-seen atmosphere that is set to revolutionize the Bali restaurant scene and elevate it to a whole new level. Cheyne has designed the space, giving it a grandiose air with playful undertones and an ‘anything goes’ attitude. He said upon the project: “I have attempted to bestow upon Shanghai Baby an elegant concoction of traditional grandness and vanguard design with a unique swanky spirit, while alluding to the nostalgia of 20th century Paris. There are opulent overtures yet it has a flirty vibe. Upon entering the restaurant which has been given a deliberate discreet exterior is like embarking on a hush-

hush affair across three flaunting levels engulfed in extravagance. It is the perfect environment to celebrate life with gloaming days and evocative nights replete with countless possibilities. Located on the ground floor is the main dining area, separated by grand terrazzo columns and oversized circular teak reveals, creating intimate private dining spaces while sharing the atmosphere of the timeless residence. The circular staircase leads up to the nocturnal second level where leather armchairs and the elaborate bar lounge club. An open air rooftop sits on the third level which features relaxed chairs and Parisianinspired water features.
