PUBLISHERS NOTE

A

s we draw into the holiday season we tend to think of how to make others happy, by surprising them witha new recipe for a gathering, a creative present for your loved ones, employees and pets, and giving back to the less fortunate ones too.

The simplicity of joy to see a smile becomes the holiday mood. This is when we reach into the ornate to bring our mood up to the occasion. If you ever felt like wearing jewelry, now is the time. If you ever felt like wearing bold colors, now is the time. Warm rich fabrics with texture are particularly perfect for the chilly weather. They set the mood of ‘cozy’ in our mind and make staying indoors welcomed. Much Love, Elisabeth

DESIGNER FOCUS

Michael Klammsteiner is a young designer based in London and Italy, who founded his label Miclee after successfully graduating and winning plenty of prizes and recognition for his graduate collection. Coming from a creative background, he was already predicted to become not only a talented designer but to be innovative in the way he thinks about fashion and incorporates non-fashion materials. He’s got the knowledge and passion to succeed and he is definitely a name to remember.

The tattoo artist Thomas Hooper has also regularly inspired my creation of patterns and shapes. FSHN: Where can we purchase Miclee? I am selling Outfits on request. INTERVIEW

Guess what? We just met incredible Lisa Dengler from “just another“. Born in Germany, raised in Canada and based in New York. The successful fashion blogger describes herself as “just another girl in just another blogging world“. What she thinks about her work and whats coming next? Read below!

FSHN: When and why did you start blogging? Did you have a concept/plan? LS: I started blogging back in 2011 after learning how to design and code blogs. It later turned into a fashion blog because I realized I had to also create content. I never really had a concept or plan in mind, I just did it because I loved it, and I still do exactly that today! FSHN: What do you think makes blogging so special? LS: Bloggers are ordinary people who decided one day to start a blog. Anyone can do it! I think that’s why so many people can relate to us, what we do, what we’re wearing, etc. It’s all attainable! FSHN: The photos of your blog/ instagram are very high quality, do you take them yourself? Do you also work as an Photographer?

40

LS: Marcel and I take photos of each other and we both make it a point to make them very high quality. On Instagram, a lot of them are shot by me. I love photography! I picked up my first DSLR when I was 12 and taught myself photoshop a few years later. FSHN: On the blog we can see that you are constantly travelling, is this because of your blog or is it for pleasure. Or both? LS: I’m my best self when I’m travelling, so I am incredibly blessed to be able to do it with my blog and I try to do it as often as possible. It’s so amazing that when you work online, you can basically be living anywhere in the world, and so I’m going to make use of that while I can!

FSHN: So we know you’re half Canadian and half German. Where did you grow up? Can you tell us some more about yourself? LS: I was born in Germany, but moved to Canada when I was 2, so I guess I’m primarily Canadian. But as kids, we travelled back to Europe a lot to visit family, and that’s probably where my love of travelling started. FSHN: What is your next big project? What are you looking forward to? LS: Maybe moving to LA? Maybe singing? Maybe starting my own label? Maybe writing a book? Who knows! There are so many ideas floating around my head at any given moment, and trust me, they’ll all be accomplished sooner or later, but I’m not sure which one will come first just yet. FSHN: In this issue we are also featuring your boyfriend. How did you both meet each other and do you sometimes help each other with the blog postings? Do you influence each other? LS: We met through a friend a few years ago, but I’d like to think it was more fate than anything else. We’ve helped each other grow and develop, and continue to do so on a daily basis. It just works, you know? FSHN: Where would you want to be in 5 years? Do you think you will still be blogging? LS: In 5 years I want to be just as happy as I am today. Whether that be through blogging or anything else. FSHN: Any tips and tricks for the bloggers out there that are struggling with having followers? LS: I’ll be honest, it’s a lot of work for a very long time. So just don’t give up! Keep creating beautiful content, keep interacting with others (because blogging is a community after all), and just continue to believe you can succeed and then one day you’ll find yourself where you always wanted to be. I’m a huge believer in dreams coming true if you put the effort in.

POLITICALLY CORRECT

FROM WORK TO THE BAR

by George Mickum

Having outfits that can easily transform when needed is key to surviving in the professional world. Women especially struggle to take their outfits from the office to the after-work scene. In the process, the line can become blurred: dressing too much for one or the other, either too dull or too provocative. When dressing for work, one must look feminine and attractive. There is nothing inappropriate about dressing like a woman to accentuate gender. However, there is a level of hemline cleavage that is appropriate for the workplace. I believe one should wear to work what one would wear to church. Open-toed shoes, miniskirts, plunging necklines, and slits of over four inches are all aspects of a woman’s wardrobe that are best left for non-work-related events. But it’s not really practical for one to pack another outfit for an evening, so one must be creative, pack light, and seamlessly transition from the more conservative workplace to a fun restaurant or bar. Underpinnings of a blazer can be all sorts of sexy.

56

Under a blazer, one can disguise all the promiscuities of sexy shirts. A black nude-illusion blouse or a sleeveless/backless top can look perfectly appropriate under a blazer. If one is to wear tights to work, one must wear a long jacket or tunic of sorts. However, once work is over, take off the long tunic or blazer and rock a leather jacket, switching from the etiquette-focused look of work to the younger and freer look of the evening by changing only one article of clothing. One can never go wrong with a fitted cocktail dress in the evening. For work, one could incorporate a cardigan or a blouse under a dress, covering the arms and shoulders and making the neckline work-appropriate. Fashion etiquette is crucial for many aspects of life. However, when one is out with friends after work or on a date, the rules of what is appropriate change. By freeing up one’s look while keeping the basic parameters of appropriate dress, it’s possible to pull off sexy—even when coming from work.

Wearing backless clothing is not acceptable for the workplace. However, if covered with a bolero or a blazer during the day, a backless blouse quickly becomes date-worthy. Found at Saks.com

This tunic could be paired with tights and worn under a short blazer. Take off the blazer, and you are ready for the clubs. Found at Saks.com

This Carven Skirt is work appropriate, yet whimsical enough to be interesting in all environments. A great date night skirt, that can also be work place friendly. Found at Saks.com

This AKRIS vest could easily be worn with a button-down or collared blouse under it. Slip it off on your way out of the office, and you are ready for the bar scene. Found at Saks.com

but now I cannot be more excited to move on to the next chapter in my career as an actress on Broadway. I wouldn’t have made it here without the experience and amazing support that I had at SF Ballet. The mentoring and support came from everywhere at SF Ballet - my director, Helgi Tomasson, the ballet masters and mistresses, my fellow dancers and the patrons. It was bittersweet to leave SF Ballet, but it was really more like I was leaving “home” for the next exciting chapter of my artistic career. I cannot be more excited and happy about being on Broadway full time, but will never forget everything that SF Ballet provided me....oh yeah, to answer your question – Yes! I love Broadway! I will never forget one of my first rehearsals with An American in Paris – it was a group sing along to our show’s music. There I was, only a couple days on Broadway, looking around at my new colleagues, producers, directors, you name it – and then doing a sing along with so many talented and artistically successful people in one room – and then to top it off, I am in a sing along for work, which is something I would want to do for fun at a dinner party! So, I guess yes, I suppose an addiction in the making. Ha!

ET: You had to re-locate from California to New York for An American in Paris, but I know you kept your home in San Francisco and your family still remains. Is living the bi-costal lifestyle as fabulous as it sounds? SR: I wouldn’t have it any other way! I am fortunate to have two beautiful apartments in two of the best cities in the world. It’s a dream come true. The only challenge is that my husband is also bicoastal and I don’t get to see him as much as I like. We, of course, miss each other when we are apart, but he has been incredibly supportive throughout this process. It has been a fun and exciting chapter in our lives together and we are making the most of it.

ET: What do you like most about living in Manhattan? SR: I love the energy here in Manhattan. I know that deep down I am a California girl. Even more than that, I grew up in Lake Tahoe, so I am even deeper down a California mountain girl! But surprisingly, I really feel at home here in NYC. It is true, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. Because I want to expand several of my artistic talents and interests – music, acting as well as dance - I think my career in NYC will find many more opportunities to flourish. I’m grateful to be among such a wealth of artistic talents that live and thrive in this city.

HOLIDAY FASHION ISSUE 2015

ET: What is your way relaxing when you are not performing or in rehearsal? SR: I have a hard time relaxing because I am always working on something artistic. I am so hard on my body at work and always need massage therapy to stay healthy. I schedule time to relax by checking into a day spa. My favorite spas around the world are Mandarin Oriental Spa in NYC, when I’m in San Francisco I check into the Huntington Hotel, and Hotel Costes in Paris France. These places are special to me because I leave the spa fully rejuvenated.

ET: Your new role in the ensemble of a Broadway has you singing. How is it performing with your voice, instead of solely your feet? SR: To be silent all those years in the ballet and finally use my voice has been an incredible experience for me. To hear myself and explore my range has been fun and exciting. The first day of rehearsal for An American in Paris, I was sitting next to an ex-opera singer and had to try to keep up with her. I had no idea that I was a soprano! I had never even tried singing that high before and it felt very uncomfortable and daunting at first. I found that I had an extra octave in my range that I would never have discovered. I’m still a work in progress, but to answer your question, it has been a fantastic experience!

ET: As a friend, I know you have submerged yourself in all different forms of art most of your life. When did you start singing, playing the piano, and composing music? SR: I began composing music on the piano when I was four years old. I have always had a natural ear for mus ic and could figure out how to play the piano easily. My mother decided to enroll me in lessons when I was five and I have not stopped playing since. My love of singing actually wasn’t discovered until I was in my third year at SF Ballet. I played Anita in San Francisco Ballet’s production of West Side Story Suite and had to sing in front of 3,500 people in a sold-out performance in the SF Opera House. Talk about trial by fire! Performing in front of that many people got me over my fear of performing in public really quick! I also recently completed a 30-minute piece that I am adapting for a full orchestra and hope to use for a ballet. Overall, music is my true passion in life and I look forward to continuing being involved in it, whether it be dancing, singing or composing.

ET: Since you are performing most of your day, what do you like to wear when you are not working? SR: You will usually find me in a silk blouse, Rebecca Taylor slacks, Repetto flat shoes, a Chanel purse, leather jacket and a silk scarf. I never forget earrings! I like to wear things that are comfortable during the day, but can elegantly transition into evening wear if necessary. I also keep a pair of Louboutin heels at work in case I am invited out after my performance. ET: What style of shoe or which brand best fits your precious ballerina feet? SR: I never scrimp on buying nice shoes! As my husband always reminds me, “my feet are my money-makers…so treat them that way!” My ballet shoes are made by Repetto. They are custom made for my feet and hand sewn by a woman in Paris, France. When I found out the company makes street shoes, I had to try them. They are all hand made just like my ballet shoes and the materials are the highest quality. If I wear heels, I wear sling backs by Manolo Blahnik, Dolce & Gabbana or Christian Louboutin. ET: Since we love to talk fashion. Who is your favorite designer for your petite, fit body type? SR: I like to always feel and look “clexy“ (classic and sexy) in my clo-

I also love the way Rebecca Taylor pants fit my body. This summer I discovered Self Portrait lace dresses and skirts - and I am obsessed! ET: Side question: Since you rely on your body to be strong and healthy for work, what does your diet consist of? Have any favorites? SR: I am attracted to anything that makes me feel happy and healthy. I eat mostly raw and organic and know my body so well that I know what I am craving and give it to myself. Because I crave feeling full of energy I have started craving foods that enable my body to work at optimum levels. My favorite guilty pleasures are fine wines, raw milk cheese, and chocolate. If I want to eat a doughnut - I eat it! I listen to my body and stop eating when I’m full or if I’m not enjoying it anymore. By feeling free to eat anything I want, makes me listen to what my body is truly craving and my body is always telling me what I need…I have learned how to listen and obey! ET: What are your favorite colors and fabrics to wear? Do you have a favorite place to shop? SR: I love wearing bright colors but also enjoy wearing classics like white, black and beige and spicing it up with a handbag or jewelry. I believe in quality over quantity and like to keep my closet full of clothes that make me feel glamourous. I normally buy clothes made in silk, cashmere,

leather and lace. You will usually see me in one of these fabrics at all times. I don’t have very much free time to shop with my current schedule, so if I see something online or in a storefront in one of those materials, I‘ll just buy it. But I don’t really have a go-to, rather I focus on quality and it does not necessarily matter where I find it. ET: Scarves are a great fall accessory, especially in a city with

such cold temperatures like New York. Are you a fan? SR: Yes! I love wearing silk scarfs every day because they dress up any outfit and make me feel like a classic beauty. I started wearing silk scarves a few years ago after I recovered from a neck injury. I always wanted to keep my neck warm in rehearsals and I needed something light and thin to

wear. I began wearing silk scarves from rehearsals every day with my street clothes and have not stopped since! Talk about making lemonade out of lemons! ET: As the weather changes, we can feel the holidays fast approaching, what are your family’s holiday traditions? SR: The holidays have always been one of the busiest times of the year for me. I am always performing and am usually physically exhausted. My husband and I have not celebrated in the same city twice since we have been married. We have celebrated in San Francisco, Paris and this year it will be New York City. For me, the meaning of holidays is being with my loved ones. I am happy as long as I have the people I love around me. ET: Talking about family and your husband: You recently got married. How did marriage change your life? SR: He is beautiful inside and out. It’s impossible to choose only one quality that I like about my Husband. I love his sense of humor. I think he is the funniest man I’ve ever met. He is the most thoughtful man and is a loyal friend and partner. I respect him for that. Did I mention that he looks like prince charming? I’m really blessed to have found such an all-around wonderful partner to share life with. ET: What is your favorite quality about your husband? SR: He is beautiful inside and out. I think he is the funniest man I’ve ever met. He is the most thoughtful man and is a loyal friend and partner. I respect him for that. Did I mention that he looks like prince charming? I’m really blessed to have found such an all-around wonderful partner to share life with. ET: What do value most about your friendships? SR: They support me and celebrate life. I love learning and growing and my closest friends love that too. ET: What are the joys of keeping longtime relationships in your work and personal life? SR: I wouldn’t trade my experience working with San Francisco Ballet for the world. Dancing with San Francisco Ballet for eleven years taught me so much and really created the foundation that I can build anything on. I feel that my career in SF Ballet was successful. I gained so much knowledge and confidence over the years and discovered myself throughout the process. Being successful is an interesting topic to me because people have their own idea of what success is to them and there are both small and large successes in our day to day life. I believe that if you can find success in any form of life you learn a formula that works for you and then you learn to apply it in other facets of your life. I met so many wonderful people over the years and have shared special moments with family, friends, supporters, colleagues, teachers and mentors. I am grateful for each person who stepped into my life and for the lessons I learned from each one. Each experience made me the woman I am today and I will never stop learning and growing. DESIGNER PORTRAIT

NOBI TALAI A love of textiles and pure, archetypal forms runs like a threadthrough Berlin-based designer Nobieh Talaei‘s biography.

Born in 1978 in Teheran, Iran, she grew up immersed in traditional handcraft and tailoring skills through her grandmother, a dressmaker of nomadic heritage who made all the neighbors‘ wedding dresses, Talaei recalls. At the age of 11, Talaei and her family moved to Berlin. She studied fashion at Esmod in Berlin, and her graduate men‘s wear collection was one of the two chosen by Premium to be specially exhibited at the Berlin fashion fair in 2003. Later, she gained merchandising experience with a leading international women‘s wear brand, followed by retail management positions with a luxury designer brand. Then came a short stint in interior

design, during which she created timeless yet modern environments starring hand-chosen pieces of Bauhaus, Neue Sachlichkeit and 1950‘s Scandinavian design. These different chapters, she notes, all helped lay theconceptual and aesthetic foundations for her company, which she founded in Berlin with a first NOBI TALAI image collection in 2015. The Spring/Summer 2016 NOBI TALAI collection marks the designer‘s official market debut, and will bepresented during Berlin Fashion Week in July in both a solopresentation and then as part of The Berliner (Mode) Salon at the Kronprinzenpalais.

PATRICIA KLUGE‘S DREAM “I recently dreamt that I was standing in a medieval castle. I was dressed completely in red--including the hat I was wearing--as if I was going to Ascot. I looked really beautiful and ready to come out.” Patricia Kluge, Manhattan, New York

THE INTERPRETATION

by Lauren Lawrence

In dreams, the edifice one finds oneself in defines the dreamer’s current state of mind but also their sense of self: In other words, the grander the home, the grander one’s self view. The castle, as a fortification symbol that has withstood the wrath of time, reveals permanence, stability, durability and deep inner strength. The persona is high-minded, majestic, regal and rarified. It is not about to let in just anyone. In this view, accessibility is limited to those deemed worthy and loyal, close and dear. As legends often develop in medieval settings, the dream may foretell that a legend

84

is about to unfold. Although the color red often represents the phonetic meaning of “read” and signifies the wish to be understood, it has other meaning: Red is the emblematic color of the heart. As such, being dressed entirely in red reveals intense emotions, a passionate nature. What is especially significant is the feeling the dreamer has of being ready to “come out,” for this is the debutante’s wish to debut, to begin something fresh and new in life. Something splendid is clearly ready for presentation. Patricia Kluge’s new line of jewelry, no doubt.

AFRICA Falling in love with Cape Town. South Africa’s mother city, with its cloud-draped Table Mountain, golden beaches and bountiful vineyards, captures people’s hearts. photographer BENJAMIN JANßEN

AREAS TO STAY The most popular areas for visitors to stay include Camps Bay, Sea Point, the V&A Waterfront, the City Bowl, Hout Bay, Constantia, Rondebosch, Newlands, Somerset West, Hermanus and Stellenbosch, as well.

Cape Town was first developed by the Dutch East India Company as a victualling (supply) station for Dutch ships sailing to East Africa, India, and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony. Until the Witwatersrand Gold Rush and the development of Johannesburg, Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa.

Cape Town is a city in South Africa. It ranks third among the most populous urban areas in South Africa, after Johannesburg, and has roughly the same population as the Durban Metropolitan Area. It is also the provincial capital and primate city of the Western Cape. As the seat of the National Parliament, it is also the legislative capital of the country. It forms part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. The city is famous for its harbour, for its natural setting in the Cape Floristic Region, as well as for such well-known landmarks as Table

Mountain and Cape Point. As of 2014 it is the 10th most populous city in Africa and home to 64% of the Western Cape’s population. It is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and expatriatesto South Africa. The city was named the World Design Capital for 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. In 2014, Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by both The New York Times and The Telegraph. Located on the shore of Table Bay,

Cape Town is not only the most popular international tourist destination in South Africa, but Africa as a whole. This is due to its good climate, natural setting, and well-developed infrastructure. The city has several wellknown natural features that attract tourists, most notably Table Mountain, which forms a large part of the Table Mountain National Park and is the back end of the City Bowl. Reaching the top of the mountain can be achieved either by hiking up, or by taking the Table Mountain Cableway. Cape Point is recognised as the dramatic headland at the end of the Cape Peninsula. Many tourists also drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive, a narrow road that links Noordhoek with Hout Bay, for the views of the Atlantic Ocean and nearby mountains.

FSHN | 103

FSHN MAGAZINE

There‘s always something happening in Cape Town, but it’s not always possible to say when.

It is possible to either drive or hike up Signal Hill for closer views of the City Bowl and Table Mountain. Clifton Beach is one of Cape Town’s most famous beaches and is a significant tourist destination in its own right. Many tourists also visit Cape Town’s beaches, which are popular with local residents. Due to the city’s unique geography, it is possible to visit several different beaches in the same day, each with a different setting and atmosphere. Though the Cape’s water ranges from cold to mild, the difference between the two sides of the city is dramatic. While the Atlantic Seaboard averages annual water temperatures barely above that of coastal California around 13 °C (55 °F), the False Bay coast is much warmer, averaging between 16 and 17 °C (61 and 63 °F) annually. This is similar to water temperatures in much of the Northern Mediterranean (for

104

example Nice). In summer, False Bay water averages slightly over 20 °C (68 °F), with 22 °C (72 °F) a common high. Beaches located on the Atlantic Coast tend to have very cold water due to the Benguela current which originates from the Southern Ocean, whilst the water at False Bay beaches may be warmer by up to 10 °C (18 °F) at the same moment due to the influence of the warm Agulhas current, and the surface warming effects of the South Easter wind. Both coasts are equally popular, although the beaches in affluent Clifton and elsewhere on the Atlantic Coast are better developed with restaurants and cafés, with a strip of restaurants and bars accessible to the beach at Camps Bay. Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is known for its colony of African penguins.

MODEL PORTRAIT

@m4 Models

“I was discovered when I was sixteen years old. A friend of my brother’s ex-girlfriend, who was a fashion design student at the time, asked me to model for her graduating collection. She was looking for a diversity of models with different skin tones. I have to admit, I was interested in modeling before this opportunity, which is the reason why I agreed to do it immediately. I remember at that first photoshoot there were five or six other models and we were shooting outside on a cold winter day. My looks were shot very quickly and the photographer said I was a natural in front of the camera. I was elated by the compliment and lucky that I didn’t have to stay outside in the cold. At the final show, where all the graduating designers were showing their final collections, my designer told me I should really give modeling a chance. And that is how it all began.

Modeling has allowed me to travel all over the world, seeing different places from Europe to Africa, and to get to know different kinds of people and characters. For most people, it would be hard to be young and traveling alone, but I truly love it. It has made me mature faster and helped me develop into the person I am today. One of my career highlights happened just this year when I was flying to Tanzania for a one-day commercial shoot. Flying so many hours just for a few photos, sounds so ridiculous, but I am happy to have the opportunity to see places like this, that I might never have the chance to with a normal 9-to-5 job. My biggest dream is to be a successful model and to work as long as I can.”

What you need for an at-home manicure: A cuticle remover - I love the “Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator” from Butter London. A cuticle pusher - the one I absolutely recommend is the “Pusher Plus” by OPI. You will also need a good, gentle nail file as well as a buffer. A cuticle plier - my favorite is the “AccuNip” from OPI. A cuticle oil - the best is the “Handbag Holiday Cuticle Oil” from Butter London. Lastly, you will need a very good

First take off the old nail polish, of course, then apply the “Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator” on your cuticles. Let it soak for two to five minutes. While you wait file your nails to the shape you like. Then use the “Pusher Plus” to push the cuticle back. Then buffer the tops of your nails, by your cuticle and around the edge. Use the “AccuNip” pliers to remove any remaining cuticle. Massage the cuticle oil into your nails and cuticles for next five minutes and then wipe it off. Now we are ready to put the nail polish on!

SKINCARE

Replete in the Autumn Facts What a perfect time to watch the skin change from summer glow to a tighter brighter texture.

But before it goes through this transformation, you must know the Replete facts of Autumn Serum, which is designed to assist the skin in tightening, strengthening, storing extra vitamins from what is left of autumn sunlight. Then closing it all up for winter blizzards. This will reduce skin matrix degradation and appearance of premature wrinkles and sagging. All thanks to our Seasonal Actives. Serums are designed to assist in the seasonal function of the skin as an organ, which it is. We tend to forget this at times since we preoccupy with how it looks versus what it does first. Replete looks at getting the skin to look radiant by reducing the stress of getting the job done. Turning thin fragile skin into this re-densified, resilient skin that you need in the autumn and upcoming winter. Not interfering with the processes that must happen regardless of our personal momentary desire, we go on to achieve the goals.

One of the best things you can do is to use our cleanser, the Deep Clean Restore, and a scrub in the morning as it is designed to detox during morning hours. Then nourish your skin with nutrients from the rest of the Replete line, the only skincare line without fillers that interrupt the breathing process and cause adverse symptoms. Skin is supposed to expel as it detoxifies our system without pause. Please keep in mind to let it breathe and keep it clean. At night, the skin needs a gentle rinse with our cleanser followed by the Circadian 365 Night Cream for much-needed nutrition to help repair and replace cells. The quality of your skin cells in the autumn will determine the damage level on your skin during winter. All decisions you make will show up on your skin without fail. This is how it works. All is connected from season to season and from day to day. Be gentle with what you have.

Much Love,

Elisabeth Thieriot

For this autumn look, we have placed the focus on the eyes. At an unbeatable blink, we will not waive this fall. First, a cream eyeshadow is applied to the eyelid and then blended. Spread the rest of the brush on the lower lash line. This simultaneously fixed the powder eyeshadow and makes it durable. Tip: One should not let cream products as possible to dry if you want to dazzle them as. For the second step, we have a dark brown powder eyeshadow used with a reddish tint in the rear quarter of the moving lid and then blended.. This results in a more intense effect.

130

Skip that step for a light, clean look. In the corner and under the eyebrow use a bright champagne tone and blended it into the brown. Those who want to can still draw a tender eyelid. Finally, only the eyelashes are still deceived and eyebrows if necessary repainted or refilled. For the look in the picture, we have incorporated a foundation on the skin, the cheekbones slightly shaded, applied a little rouge and a highlighter. The perfect look for a night autumnal outdoors!

“THE TRUTH”

An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships

An Interview with New York Times Bestselling Author Neil Strauss by Jason Martineau

Neil Strauss, the author of “The Game” and “Rules of the Game”, among others, has a new book out entitled “The Truth”. Once an international hero of the pickup artist community, Neil has a new take on love, relationships, sex, and the pursuit of happiness. The book is insightful, powerful, entertaining, and indeed at times quite uncomfortable. I caught up with Neil recently for this interview, and he was gracious enough to share his thoughts and ideas with FSHN. Jason: How much of this book is true? Neil: It’s obviously all true, outside of turning certain characters and places into composites and some shifts in the timeline to hide people’s identities and make things still work. But it’s all true, otherwise I wouldn’t write it. Jason: So, you’re naming a lot of well-known celebrities – these

140

are the actual people? Neil: Of course. You mean like, Rick Rubin?

Jason: In every chapter you have a gem, a pearl, an insight that pops out, and I noticed that chapters 36 and 37 are particularly jam-packed, almost page after page. Neil: Yes, that is where all the lessons start to come together.

want, or that it bothered you, and immediately my mind went back to your earlier bestseller “The Game.” One of the mantras from that book is, “You’re the prize.” So, what happened? Here is Mr. Pickup Artist, who’s got everything he could ever dream of, and suddenly his very own mantra is the subject of puzzlement to himself. Neil: Right. For starters, let’s not forget that a mantra exists because it’s something that you want to embody that you are not currently embodying. You know, nobody says my mantra is, “Wake up in the morning,” unless they wake up in the afternoons.

Jason: I was really struck by this one line, “It’s weird to hear them negotiating and manipulating to sleep with me as though I were some kind of prize.” It sounded like something that you didn’t

Jason: So it’s coming from a place of deficiency? Neil: Right, so maybe when you’re living with three times as many women, there’s going to be three times as much inadequacy. I

Jason: Yes, in particular, that’s right. Neil: Yes, those are some samples of probably thousands of conversations we’ve had on these subjects.

HOLIDAY FASHION ISSUE 2015

think Rick Rubin was the one who first pointed it out to me. He’s like, “Listen, you got everything you wanted but you’re still not really happy.” There are a lot of things we chase after. We chase after money, we chase after wealth, we chase after fame. And if we’re lucky enough to get what we want, we also get lucky enough to find that we’re still not happy, and that thing you were chasing externally, was just a substitute for something you’re missing inside. Jason: Sure. That also goes for all kinds of dead-end pursuits, whether it’s drinking, or gambling; you know, destructive behaviors. Neil:We chase after money, we chase after wealth, we chase after fame. Neil: But also things our culture supposedly encourages, like work and career, and money, and followers… Jason: Right. But whatever our path, somehow we have to make a living, we still have to pay the bills, right? Neil: Yes, and you can do the same thing in a healthy or in an unhealthy way. The unhealthy way is that you base your entire self-esteem on what you’re doing and not who you are. You still have to work, but people have to know the difference between whether they are just working hard because they’re passionate, or because they need the money, or because they are avoiding life or connection. Two people can be doing the exact same thing, in the exact same way, and one can be doing it for healthy reasons and one for

unhealthy reasons. Jason: Right, so we look at motivations. Neil: Right. “What is the unconscious motivation?” Jason: So according to the flow of the book, this guy’s got it all. Whatever he wants, he can get, he’s very good at that. And then he gets it, and then he doesn’t want it. He’s bouncing through all of these options, and he’s gotten through quite a lot of them, and none of them are hitting the spot. It seems there is no type of relationship that’s going to help this guy. He’s got to come to it for different reasons. Neil: Yes I think that’s it. You’re looking for something externally, to fill a hole internally, and that’s never going to work. I think that’s really what the lesson is, and it’s fortunate that I crammed a lot of experience into a short amount of time, so I got to find this out earlier in life. A lot of people say, “If I can just find the right person, then my relationships will work, I’ll be in love, and I’ll be happy.” And yet, after four, five, six, ten, twenty relationships, they still think they’re going to find that right person, until they realize that the person they need to be in a good relationship with is themselves. Jason: So it’s not about what type of relationship is going to work, it’s about what’s going on inside, and what your motivations are for a relationship – of any kind. Neil: At the start of the book, I felt like marriage was obsolete, monogamy was an anachronism, and I’d go find a relationship that would work for my true self. As I find out later in the book it’s not relationships that are broken, it’s me that’s broken. If you’re healthy, any type of relationship you choose to be in will be healthy because you are making a healthy choice. Jason: Right, though it seems like those realizations come to you early on in the book, but rather than accepting them you instead

take the path of asserting the rightness of your commitment to finding what you think will work for you. Neil: It sounds to me like the strategy that most people take. It’s the definition of madness. It’s hard to change our behaviors if they are fueled by our unconscious beliefs. We do things because we think we are not enough, or that we are entitled to something. Over and over the strategy won’t pay off, and yet we’ll keep doing and doing it. Jason: Right. But the main character Style, from “The Game,” who is you, doesn’t strike me as this doubting, guilt-ridden person. He goes out there into the world and is deeply confident, so it would appear. Neil: He’s good at a certain skill set. Jason: Would you call that manipulation? Neil: Sure you can call it manipulation. He’s driven by an unhealthy compulsion. Jason: So it’s not confidence? Neil: I think it’s just a guy who’s trying to fill the hole with women, and thinking he’s filled it. Jason: So insecurity doesn’t play into the game, when you’re in “The Game“? Neil: “The Game“ is only about insecurity. That’s what that book is about. Jason: So what about the neg? When a man says something to play on a woman’s perceived insecurities to make her more vulnerable to him… Neil: It’s just two insecure people meeting. A guy whose self-esteem is so low, he has to bring a woman down to his low level, and a woman who might be affected by something a total stranger says to her, so it’s just a sad interaction overall. Jason: So, The Society – from your website: “Society members

are high-performing industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and influencers from the technological, entertainment, medical, financial, and self-development worlds, among others.” Is this something that goes on today? Neil: Yes, and I really enjoy doing it. I thought, “Why don’t I get a bunch of great people together, and we go on a self-improvement journey together?” We take cool trips, we went to North Korea, some of the guys went to Antarctica. We bring in awesome speakers, learn about the deeper psychological elements that make you you, and try to work on them. Jason: So this is not The Society of ten years ago when “The Game” came out, where men are learning how to pick up women. Neil: No. That was ten years ago. More than half the guys in The Society are married or in relationships. Jason: So it’s about the restoration of interior integrity so that people’s motivations are authentic and not driven by unconscious drives or unfulfilled shadow aspects. Neil: Yes, well said. I like really experiential stuff. It’s hard to transform from a book. If anything, “The Truth” is a really entertaining story, with a lot of ideas and concepts that will hopefully inspire you to have the motivation to make the change on your own.But I think that big change really comes from experiential stuff. Jason: So, with regard to monogamy, I don’t mean the moral or Christian thing, just, pair-bonding – what’s your take? Do you think it’s natural, or not? Or is there a third answer? Neil: It says at the end of the book, that I believe that it doesn’t fucking matter. Anyone who bases their beliefs about what they’re going to do with their life on a scientific theory versus looking inside for what’s right for them, is looking in the wrong direction. I think the real answer is, to do what’s right for you,

142

what brings you joy and happiness, as well as the people you’re with, and that’s probably the answer.

of growth together. So there’s a big life opportunity there.

Jason: So it’s an improper formulation of the question. Neil: I think the monogamy/ non-monogamy thing is a false duality. In the book, I say I’m looking for love, but all I’m really looking for is a sexual arrangement, and I honestly think there’s a higher, better place you get to with love if you’re not just thinking about “who has my same sexual preference.” That’s a good way to get into trouble with a relationship you maybe shouldn’t be in. And maybe it’s a problem with our society, where we can only think of a love relationship as a sexual match or arrangement. I think if two healthy adults are in a very healthy relationship, they can work out what’s right for them or the relationship as it comes up.

Jason: Right, and intimacy brings all that up. Neil: Right because that replicates the parental bond and fears – “I can be abandoned,” “I can be betrayed.”

Jason: So it sounds like you are saying that a person can discover their own internal, authentic experience of what it means to be in love with somebody, and to cultivate things like empathy, compassion, through self-awareness, and knowing one’s needs – that people don’t have to hang on to a particular framework or system. They can figure out their own. Neil: That’s exactly it. One minor thing I’d say is, which goes contrary to everything in “The Game,” to not to have to go look for it. The great thing about a relationship is that two people can come together and create something new in a realm of infinite possibility, if you’re thinking about life like that, and I think that’s really exciting. Jason: But to get two people to that place, to be able to co-create on that level– Neil: …and you can do it together. A lot of theorists believe that you meet somebody because you have complementary issues, and then you are given an opportunity to A: replicate your childhood traumas, or B: heal your childhood traumas and get to the next stage

Jason: Are we assuming that everyone had a bad childhood, a trauma, and if they say they didn’t, then they’re lying? Are we making an assumption that we’re broken? Neil: I think the fact is that we’re imperfect, and we’re raised by imperfect people, so that’s what we’re dealing with. So we have the choice to lead an unconscious life, or to grow and change and improve, and actually make the next generation just a little less imperfect. We’ll never get perfect, just like we’ll never attain divinity. Jason: But we sure can try. Neil: It’s noble work to get as close as possible to that impossible goal.

SBP Music Quote of the month “Music saves my life everyday.” - SBP

Hello everyone. Holiday season is upon us and with that comes lots of great events, music and good times with friends and family. Check out these new music releases now; Seal, Janet Jackson, OMI, Queensryche, Faithless, Ellie Goulding, and many more. In music news, Pope Francis continues to impress with his out of the box approach in spreading his message of hope, faith and unity by putting out a new progressive rock infused album. The Vatican approved LP will feature excerpts of the Pope’s best speeches in multiple languages over pop rock and chants. Who knows maybe the Pope will do a concert tour next! Superstar blue eyed soul singer Sam Smith is the voice for the theme song to the new James Bond movie, “Spectre”. The new epic ballad entitled, “Writings On The Wall”, marks the 24th official theme for the massive movie franchise and the 1st time since 1965 that a British male singer has been tapped to sing theme – check it out featured in the Top 10. In event news, the 1st annual Bay Area Vibez festival, which took place Saturday and Sunday September 25 & 26, had everything going right from great weather, stellar performances from Damien and Stephen Marley as well as Z-Trip, Bassnectar and Nas, but it was the venue that really made this Oakland, California festival special, with a beautiful backdrop of the Bay, where music lovers could walk or sit along the sand and watch the sunset over a breathtaking view of San Francisco, while listening to great music in the background. In other event news, The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival once again entertained massive crowds with 3 days of all free music at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The festival, which was the late billionaire Warren Hellman’s annual gift to San Francisco has blossomed into an epic musical feast attracting over 700K people even beyond the spirit of his original vision for a 1 day music event – if you missed this year, no need to worry, it will be back again in 2016. I hope you enjoy this issue of MusicBeatz, share it with your friends & remember to stay inspired & breathe some music into your soul daily! – Sason Bishope Parry

“Writings OnTheWall” (music video)

Sam Smith

Brilliant song by Sam Smith for the new James Bond theme, “Spectre”. Some may think his falsetto may not capture the power of the bond franchise, but on the contrary it’s a perfect balance of emotional beauty and darkness.

3 “High ByThe Beach” Lana Del Rey

2

“Magnets”

2 young superstars coming together for an awesome epic house groove. This track is different from anything that Lorde has done and is one of the highlights on the edm duo’s new album. The video is sexy crazy.

The Weeknd

(music video)

Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd has become a global sensation as he continues his hit streak. Here he teams up with Kanye’s production as his signature vocals light up the track - video shows him going on a killing spree.

6 “Stressed Out”

(music video)

5 “Levels”

(music video)

Nick Jonas

Nick’s solo career is clearly on another level then his past sibling outfit. This funky new groove, has him delivering a soulful falsetto over a danceable beat that is sure to pick up a legion of new fans.

7 “Downtown”

Twenty One Pilots

I’m really digging this new punk pop duo from Columbus, Ohio. This single from their album, “Blurryface”, is intense as multitalented lead singer Tyler Joseph sings about the transitions from childhood to adulthood over a mash-up of musical styles.

8 “Should’ve Been Us”

Tori Kelly

The singer/songwriter is on fire after her breakout performance on the VMA’s, which helped score her highest Billboard Hot 100 ranking. She is one of the freshest new voices in music and on her way to becoming a superstar.

(music video)

Macklemore & Lewis

The Seattle Hip Hop duo are officially back with the lead single off their sophomore album and it’s an epic mashup of styles with guest vocals by old school rappers Melle Mel, Grandmaster Kaz and Kook Moe Dee.

Disclosure featuring Lorde

4“TellYour Friends”

(music video)

Nothing like Lana pouring her heart into a track and the result is a synth driven song with her smooth vocals and harmonies as she sings, “all I wanna do is get high by the beach” and we believe every word.

(music video)

“Freedom” Pharrell Williams

Pharell is back with a powerful new song and video to match. The track was released via the new Apple Music service and elicits the same energy as his last mega hit, “Happy”, as he screams about Freedom.

(music video)

10

“StartAgain”Conrad Sewell

(music video)

This Aussie singer/songwriter caught a massive break, when DJ Kygo tapped him for “Firestorm”. This beautiful ballad off his solo effort showcases not only his singing chops but that he is a gifted songwriter. FSHN | 147
