PUBLISHER’S NOTE

A

pril is here and it means spring is in the air with its vivid colors and blossom scents. This a great time to enjoy the longer days that bring us outdoors. Perfect time to be motivated to get fit and feel beautiful. This can be achieved by creating a super athletic closet. Often, starting from the outside will help keep the motivation to reach fitness goals. Wearing brighter and more vibrant colors brings on a happy attitude too.

Match the spring natural flower tones and you will be just right with your mood of nature and that will keep you moving. There is no better way than to follow your intuition regarding spring cleaning: get rid of things from your life that are heavy and weigh on you. It just may make you a lighter, fitter, and freer person. Spring is about detox and a new start. Make this a time of reflection and a new life foundation. We get this chance every spring and it should not be wasted. See the value of timing and new opportunity. Much love, Elisabeth Thieriot elisabeth@fshnmagazine.com

Spring

-----------transition by GEORGE MICKUM

As spring comes around, it is important to pull out the appropriate colors and materials, switching out cashmeres and furs for linens and silks. Spring brings a whole new level of texture and vibrancy. Delicate ribbed cottons and gauzy laces are prevalent in spring fashions. To transition properly, one must start with the color palette. Men and women both need to apply peppier colors to their winter wardrobes. Let the transitions start visually with color, not with fabric—perhaps, a yellow button-down shirt under a suit or a pastel scarf paired with a business dress. Then, make more dramatic moves, such as wearing suede yellow pumps or opting for a tan light wool suit. These transitional outfits must take weather into account—even though the calendar reads spring, it might not feel like it.

With its vibrant blue color and charming checked pattern, this Isaia Checked Silk & Cashmere Blazer ($3,595) gives your wardrobe a refreshing start to the spring season. The cashmere-silk blend fabric is perfect for easing into warmer weather. saksfifthavenue.com Brighter than the average winter gray shades, these Salvatore Ferragamo Tailored-Fit Flat-Front Trousers ($990) transition seamlessly into spring wear. The woolmohair blend is an ideal fabric that breathes while also being substantial. saksfifthavenue.com

After color is fully transitioned, one must move to fabric. This does not mean summer fabrics. Linens and georgettes are strictly for the summer months, and seersucker is best left for late July and afterward. One must start with lighter cashmeres, heavier cottons, and chambrays. Men should adorn themselves in stiff cotton-wool blend suits. Women should start wearing more whimsically silhouetted clothes. During the spring, no white footwear is allowed, and sandals are really only appropriate for the most casual of events. Spring shoes can be lighter in color but should remain closed. Starting the transition is about subtlety, easing your body and wardrobe into a more light and free ensemble. This process should start in late March. In April, holiday clothes tend to be in pastel hues. At this time, I would like to caution everyone about the storage of winter goods. All those beautiful wools and cashmeres are perfect snacks for moths. Winter boots should be stuffed (rolled papers or forms) and furs need to be kept at a cool temperature. To brighten and evolve your look visually for spring, these Manolo Blahnik Nappa Neon Lather Point Toe Pumps ($595) pair splendidly with lighter weight winter suits. saksfifthavenue.com

20

Elegant and breezy, this Adam Lippes Crescent-SleeveBelted Shift Dress ($1,090) has a sophisticated round neckline and flowing silhouette that helps you slip effortlessly into spring fashion. saksfifthavenue.com

consignment

T K C R pt 2. by GABRIELLE MANCHESTER

One of the many joys of consignment shopping is finding that perfect piece. The question then is always, once you’ve tracked down your must haves, how do you ensure that they stay looking their best? Working in resale, I frequently get questions from consignors about keeping their items in salable condition and from customers about maintaining their new-to-you fabulous finds. Last issue, I addressed how to care for leather goods. This bevy of tips and tricks is dedicated to the repair, alteration, and care of consignment clothing. Clothing Alteration and Repair Tips Sometimes you find a piece at consignment and it was as if it was made just for you: the arms are the perfect length, it doesn’t pull at the bust or the hips, and the waist is just so. Other times, the price is perfection but the item itself may need some minor tweaking to best fit you and highlight your assets. I spoke to my favorite alterations and repair specialist, Snow Chew of Alterations To Go, to get insider insight into how best to approach alterations and repair of our clothes. Here is her advice. Alterations Alterations can be tricky and costly. Snow recommended that if you are buying items at consignment that might need alteration, to limit what you buy to pieces that only need one area adjusted. The idea with consignment is to buy pieces that are a great deal, but if a garment has to be entirely reworked, the cost of alterations can negate the great price you got at resale. Additionally, she explained that (at least at her shop) the alteration cost is based on time spent. Sometimes, there are a couple of different strategies they can use to repair or alter a garment. The more costly way is usually when an item requires couture or hand sewn methods. Occasionally, this is entirely necessary to retain the value of a couture garment. Other times, it may be possible to “cheat” and use a less time/money costly repair method. Ask your repair specialist what method will be used, whether there are different options available to you, and what the difference in cost will be, so you can make an informed decision.

Repair Have you ever taken a beautiful cashmere out of your closet only to realize with horror that a moth has chewed a hole in it? Don’t despair or immediately toss! Often times, it can be salvaged by a professional who specializes in a technique called “invisible reweaving.” When done properly, you can barely tell that a hole was ever there. The next step is to prevent damage from occuring in the first place! I recommend using Clothes Moth Alert by Safer, which traps moths rather than solely repelling them (like cedar). It also saves your clothes from moth ball smell. Clothing Care Tips I often get asked how best to care for clothes once they get home. I have a few suggestions I’ve learned to help maximize the life of your clothes and minimize the money you spend in the pursuit of sartorial perfection. Washing Cashmere: Many labels will direct you to dry clean, but only do this if there are embellishments on the item. Otherwise, frequent dry cleaning will degrade the fabric and shorten the life of your cashmere. Hand wash in cold or warm water (cold for patterns or saturated colors) and do not agitate. Lay the item flat on a towel and reshape to dry. Be sure not to wring it out or hang it up or you risk ruining its shape. At home dry cleaning: In addition, we all know that frequent dry cleaning can run up clothing costs very quickly. Use an at-home dry cleaning system like Dryel (starter kit available for $6.97) to cut down on expensive dry cleaning bills. The colorblock cashmere sweater is Vince, retailed $365, found for $95

The cashmere fringe poncho is by 360 Sweater, retailed for $403, found for $180

TRENDS

2015 Spring

by LESLIE LAMBERT

As we jump full-force into the spring season, fashionistas everywhere are beginning to break out this season’s biggest trends: gingham and trouser pantsuits. These looks will be seen all over the world this spring. They are timeless favs that you can wear anytime, any place.

GINGHAM

--------------------------------

1

Gingham is the print of 2015. It brings us back to the 50s and 60s where the classic looks were fun and eye-catching, and the little checkers were the most feminine of prints. Women of all ages wore gingham for beach days and high tea; today, too, women are seen wearing gingham for all occasions. The print is sophisticated and youthful at the same time, and it just always looks sharp. A woman exhibits elegance when strutting down the sidewalk with those powerful tiny boxes covering her outfit. Models at fashion weeks all over the globe were dressed in the classic print, some even in head-to-toe gingham. The print is found in small and large patterns and colors ranging from blues to pinks to yellows – something to match every outfit. On the runway, models were found wearing one black gingham piece paired with solid black pieces, or a mix of colored gingham pieces head-to-toe. Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, Chloé and other top designers introduced gingham into their spring lines and they are nothing short of fabulous. Dolce & Gabbana has a lovely Gingham Cotton-Poplin Dress that is a must-have for spring for $2,295 (net-a-porter.com). Also, always timeless and absolutely stunning, Oscar de la Renta has a gorgeous Gingham Stretch Wool-Blend Top & pencil skirt set in black and white gingham for $890 and $1,290 respectively (net-a-porter.com).

----------------------

JUMPSUIT

Take us back to the same time period and women were wearing the famous pantsuit brilliantly. The perfect mix between feminine and masculine, the trouser pantsuit has become very popular this season. There are no more bulky shoulder pads and boxy styles, so say hello to the new tailored and sleek pantsuits of today’s generation. Each season, women are finding the opportunity to feel comfortable in any outfit. From sneakers to trendy tees and pullovers, women are showing the necessity to be cute and comfy at the same time. The workplace is no different; the pantsuit allows women to no longer have to worry about crossing their legs without showing anything, or not even being able to cross their legs in a skirt or dress. The pantsuit is liberating and designers know it, too. Isabel Marant has a beautiful Milt Double-Breasted Tuxedo Jumpsuit for your masculine side: a double breasted tuxedo suit; it is simply amazing and could be yours for $1,160 (barneys.com). For the suit you want to wear when giving a big presentation or to wow everyone in sight, you can’t go wrong with Prabal Gurung’s incredibly designed Lace-Inset Crepe Jumpsuit with intricate and precise stitching for $3,500 (neimanmarcus.com). 46

REPLETE

BRING NEW SKIN AND YOUTHFUL LOOK by ELISABETH THIERIOT

There’s no better time than April to benefit from having fresh, new skin without spots, marks, or unwanted tattoos with almost no downtime and little to no pain. Spring is a great time to shed what we do not want on our body or in our life. It is a good time to adapt new ways and open your mind to new possibilities after winter’s indoor months. One of the new possibilities is the benefit you can have from the perfect combination of technology with biology for your instant gratification! Finally, we can have the age of skin somewhat reversed! After receiving a PhotoFacial to remove age and sun spots, Replete Intense Recovery will expedite your recovery time and the look and feel of your skin 2/3 times faster than without. The Replete Intense Recovery extract, when used immediately after the chosen procedure, acts instantly to eliminate pain and irritation from the tissue. This enables us to go on about normal business and continue with our personal lives. Sometimes, the best things come as surprise. I have created the Intense Recovery extract to calm my skin after a long day under the Hawaiian sun. I’ve found that I need the sun to be energized, to feel positive, and to help support my bone density, as I do not eat dairy products. Now, we discovered it helps to recover from silly burns we get while cooking delicious meals. I keep one by the side of my stove for moments like that, since I never know when my arm will hit the hot rack from the oven. This was the very first product I created in my skincare line! I realized with my potion’s instant relief that I was able to sleep on the beach in the sun all day and still go out to dinner or work in comfort. My conclusion, then, was that the secret to maintaining a healthy, youthful, and energetic lifestyle was sunlight and nutrients. After that, I started looking for ways to strengthen my skin for the duration of needed sun exposure, to allow for the body to convert essential nutrients drawn from the sun without limiting the time out.

58

This is how the concept of seasonal serum was born. The mission to create a formula that would address the seasonal light was challenging. Every season has different sunlight strengths and angles. If you add this to our bodies and skin, having different functional assignments with each season, you get complicated charts of function and needs. I took on this challenge and looked back on how our ancestors dealt with these issues before there was skin care to buy. I found that each era had different ways of approaching selfcare. One of the most distant from our era used clays to protect skin during long days under the sun. Replete contains extracts of specific clays combined with other proprietary seasonal extracts from deep ocean water, three thousand feet below the surface that is two thousand years old and free of this civilization’s pollution. This water’s consistency and richness of nutrients closely resemble the amniotic fluid in which we are formed. With this kind of thinking, I have been able to create 11 formulations to date that are available from Replete Skincare. I am now able to take long hikes without worrying about overexposure or insufficient sun exposure. My skin is stronger, denser, and more resilient because I directly feed the skin the needed nutrients. I feel that now I am able to see my skin function as it was designed to. Skin has its own intelligence for repair, assimilation, breathing, and detoxification as long as we do not interfere with its natural role in our system of organs. We must remember that skin has an important role in our overall wellbeing, and we need to be respectful of that. For that reason, I designed formulas that assist our skin in the roles it has for each season and between day and night. The musts for the month of April are the Spring Serum, followed by the Intense Recovery at night, and the Lip Restore to assist in a smooth transition from winter months to sunny spring.

All products are free of allergens, fragrance, coloring, animal testing, parabens, and glycols. All vegan food quality ingredients. Safe for children under 3 years of age. Replete is EU certified.

The end result is more resilient, youthful skin. “I have used many skin care lines over the years and what I have noticed by using REPLETE is that my skin looks and feels more rejuvenated. Working in my environment, we all tend to lean heavily on the treatment side of corrective skin care. Once I began using this product, I discovered that my results after IPL PhotoFacial and Microneedling were more immediate and longer lasting. In addition, I have found that with the use of the REPLETE Intense Recovery Oil after treatment, redness and inflammation were significantly reduced... almost instantaneously.” - President & Founder Margaret Mitchell”

Epi Center MedSpa and REPLETE Skincare are a winning combination advocating for beautiful and ageless skin. This is our prideful moment, fusing technology with biology into instant gratification!

REPLETE products have proven to be ideal for everyone, formulated free of chemicals, fragrances, artificial dyes, silicones, parabens, and glycol. PREP YOUR SKIN WAYS

FOR SPRING

1 2

by STACEY CAMACHO

Removing Unwanted Hair When it is winter, we tend not to pay much attention in waxing our bikini line, armpits, legs, and so forth. However, this is very important— that is, if you want to wear swim suits, dresses, skirts, tops, etc. Unwanted hair is just not that attractive, so eradicate it.

Facial Get a rejuvenating facial, so you can put your best face forward. A facial is always an excellent way to be pampered while your skin is being hydrated from the dryness of the cold weather. Book your appointment with your esthetician to receive a hydrating facial to restore moisture into your complexion. Like facials, there are many different types of body wraps. For example, a body wrap can reduce cellulite and restore elasticity into the skin, so an anti-aging body wrap exfoliates the skin while it works its magic. It is really a two-in-one. Who doesn’t love to be pampered while having your skin well taken care of?

62

3 4

Exfoliate Your Skin Exfoliating your skin during and especially afterwards is an absolute MUST. Why? It’s simple. Exfoliating your skin not only removes dead skin, it also helps to reduce fine lines. (Yes, this means younger-looking skin!) Plus, it removes any dry patches of the skin, such as elbows and knees. Let’s not forget the lips. Lips are super dry in the winter, so it is essential to exfoliate them to ensure soft, smooth, kissable lips. Use a Lighter Moisturizer A heavy moisturizer is essential to use in the winter. However, in the spring and summer, it just isn’t necessary because skin doesn’t become as dry due to the cold air. Although, your skin does dry out from being in the sun, especially when skin has been burned. Regardless, skin doesn’t dry out quite as much, at least not to the point that a heavy formula is required. In the spring and summer, a lighter moisturizer is preferable since it won’t clog your pores like a heavy moisturizer will.

5

Scrub Your Feet Let’s not forget about the feet. After all, feet are just as important as the rest of the body. A foot scrub is essential. Whether you scrub off the rough patches yourself with a foot scrub or you book an appointment for a pedicure, the roughness of your feet will be eliminated, so your feet will look sexy when you wear open toe pumps, sandals, etc.

BR A ND O LIBERATI N

Web: brandonliberati.com Facebook: Brandon Liberati Twitter: @BrandonLiberati

Hair & Makeup Artist Brandon Liberati has over 20 years of professional experience cutting and styling hair in addition to makeup application. His axiom is “Beautiful is a Feeling.” Brandon’s celebrity clientele spans the television, film, stage, radio, and publishing industries. His artistry includes work with Aveda, Bumble and Bumble, Makeup Forever, MAC Cosmetics, and Benefit Cosmetics, just to name a few. His work credits include InStyle Magazine, Vogue, Glamour, Today Show, The Emmy’s, The Tony’s, The Academy Awards, The Golden Globes, Bravo, Fox, CNN, Ricki Lake Show, Entertainment Tonight, The Food Network, The Food Network’s Next Food Network Star, a guest appearance on RuPaul’s Drag U on the Logo Network, VH1, and many other makeover shows. FSHN: How did you get started? BL: It is the only career I have ever done or wanted to do. I am the oldest boy with three younger sisters… I had plenty of practice! FSHN: Tell me about your life changing after became a celebrity beauty expert & hair stylist. BL: I definitely have more airline miles! Things have gotten much bigger and busier for me, I call it “grateful busy.” I have gotten the opportunity to attend events and parties that I only used to dream about, and through drive and intent I have manifested this life. My life has changed for the better. FSHN: Which celebrities have you personally worked with? BL: Some of the celebrities that I am allowed to mention are Giada DeLaurentiis, Jackie Warner, Jeana Keough, Jessica Meraz, and Richard Kind. FSHN: Who is your style icon? BL: Sarah Jessica Parker. FSHN: What is your number one beauty tip? Number one hair care tip? BL: Beauty tip: Spray the hair under your headband with hairspray, texturizing spray, or dry shampoo before putting it on your head and it will never slip off again in yoga, pilates, or at the gym. Hair care tip: To save your blowout for the next day, put your hair in a pineapple (flip upside down, rake your hair into a top knot on top of your head and secure with a soft hair tie) and if you are going to use a blow dryer the next day for styling any little flaws, DO NOT use warm or hot heat, only cool. The heat will break down the bonds and straighten/flatten any bounce you were trying to save!

SPRING FASHION 2015 the tail. Now, loosely twist the hair and wrap around the base and secure with a few bobby pins. Mess is more!

FSHN: How did you come up with ‘Unbridled Braid’ look? And how can we do that? BL: My client Jessica Meraz from ABC Family’s hit television show Chasing Life wanted a sexy and fresh look for her red carpet event, so we came up with this funky and chic version of the braid. To achieve this ultra cool look, use a texturizing spray on already straightened hair (Jessica has a beautiful wavy texture naturally so I wanted to bring that texture out), now tease the crown for lift and then section the hair horizontally from the top of one ear to the top of the other ear. Take the top portion of the hair and sweep to one side and start a fishbone braid right behind the bottom of the ear. Now take the bottom section of the hair you left out and sweep to the side with the braid. Start incorporating a few sections of the that hair into the braid (this will keep the loose hair under the braid in place). To finish the look, I used a piece of leather to tie the end which gave it a total glam feel. To keep this unfussy look hot, make sure to leave out several strands around your face. You’ll have no problem finding a reason to braid this look into your spring season! FSHN: Which hair/beauty products and tools are always in your kit? BL: I always have Bumble and Bumble Prep, Redken Pillow Proof dry shampoo—it’s a must for any styling, I even use it on straight looks to give sexy lift at the base of the hair. Oribé Dry Texturizing spray, L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray, Davines Oil Absolute Beautifying Potion for finishing and it smells delicious. Must-have tools: Bobby pins (every girl should have a plethora of these little essentials and they should match YOUR hair color), a 1-1.5 inch curling iron/wand, and a mason pearson brush. FSHN: What’s a celebrity hair secret we might not know about, but should? BL: To get that red carpet or runway shiny hair that you see every celebrity and model with even after all the stress they put on their locks, just mix a silicone based shine serum with a deep conditioner and apply to your hair, leave it on for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse out thoroughly with cool water to lock in the moisture and shine. Do this little secret the night before any big party!

FSHN: What was the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

BL: Leaving everything in Utah to move to California (San Francisco to be exact) where I knew no one, to pursue my Hollywood hair dreams!

FSHN: What do you love most about being a stylist? BL: I love EVERYTHING about being a stylist.

Actress Jessica Meraz

FSHN: What are the trendiest styles in Hollywood today? BL: Lived-in hair. I call it “air hair.” Apply a styling product to your hair, dry your hair 80% (your hair will feel dry but cold to the touch), then finish with a texturizing spray or dry shampoo and let it air dry the rest of the way. This will give you that cooland-I-know-it look! FSHN: How can we do ‘Messy Bun’ at home? BL: First, tie your hair in a ponytail at the desired height; hold it at the tip with one hand and gently back brush it with the other hand starting at the base of the pony working your way to the end (back brushing is just back combing but with... you guessed it, a brush). You should now have sexy, runaway strands sticking out all along

Beauty Brand IN FOCUS AROMAEARTH The story behind AromaEarth’s inception is quite unique. In 1993, founder-CEO Kimberly Brown Lemler, was diagnosed with EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus) and MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). She could not wear any kind of fragrance or be around household cleaners, detergents, etc. She spent many years with this condition, dreaming of the day when she could again wear fragrances. When that day came, she decided to start a fragrance business as a testament against the ailments that almost took her life. Kimberly started a candle manufacturing company and worked from scratch to formulate beautiful fragrance combinations for her candle line and for her private label candle clients. After working with fragrance formulations day in and day out, she decided to branch out into wearable fragrance...and the rough draft for Cali Blue was born. Eventually, Kimberly began consulting with one of the industry’s top perfumers to create her flagship product, Cali Blue. By 2008, the process for bringing Cali Blue to fruition had begun, and in the summer of 2011, Cali Blue Eau De Parfum was officially launched to the press. AromaEarth continues to create new fragrances such as 143 Eau de Parfum, Faithful Natural Perfume, Summer Bliss Natural Perfume, Largo 33037 EDT for Men, and Laura France Eau de Parfum (coming soon). The brand is also expanding to include a pet fragrance/odor neutralizer line, a car spray, and other new products that will be coming out in 2015. To learn more about AromaEarth, please visit aromaearth.com

Cali Blue Eau De Parfum Spray Cali Blue has a citrus medley of natural lemon, orange, mandarin, and bergamot in the top note, a floral bouquet of lily, lavender, rose, and a whisper of night blooming jasmine in the middle, and an ambery, vanilla, musky sagelike base note. The combination is a clean, beachy fragrance, reminiscent of spending vacations at the shore—a fan favorite with celebrity stars such as Giuliana Rancic, Kristen Bell, Rachel Bilson, Brittany Snow, and Taryn Manning. Cali Blue has been featured in Star Magazine, Newport Beach Magazine, and Carolina Woman Magazine.

COVER STORY

MIMI TRAN

Photo: Rich Cirminello

The First Original Couture Label to Emerge from San Francisco

by Shankha Goswami FSHN Editor in Chief

I met Mimi Tran two years ago in 2013 at a party hosted by FSHN Magazine (then BAYFashion) in San Francisco. The elegantly dressed petite lady with a determined jawline immediately attracted my attention, and she was introduced to me briefly by one of my staff as a major fashion connoisseur. Little did I know at that moment that I was face to face with someone who would become a relevant name in world fashion in the blink of an eye! She became a regular fixture in the audience at most fashion events thrown by FSHN and other large production in San Francisco. Mimi’s talent is undeniable, her resolve unshakable, and her passion admirable. MIMI Tran, her label, completely stunned people at NYFW and London Fashion Week with her Red Carpet Collection, showcasing a vibrant line for autumn/winter 2015.

Mimi Tran was born in Vietnam and emigrated at the age of seven to Paris where she attended boarding school and was recognized as a gifted child in free style art. At the age of 14, her family left Paris and moved to the United States. She later graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and began her career at Cisco. Later she earned an MBA in International Business Management from Santa Clara University, but her artistic side kept pulling her toward means of creative expression. Two years ago, Mimi began her design career first specializing in form-fitting cocktail dresses that sculpt the body and accentuate feminine curves. She then moved into formal gowns and explored various fabrics, textures and beading. Sensuous, exclusive and unforgettable, all of her creations empower femininity, pay tribute to modern glamour, and feel as good to wear as they look. The MIMI Tran brand empowers today’s woman by producing apparel in contemporary styles designed to enhance her beauty and celebrate her femininity. “We are committed to using luxuriant materials combined with superior construction to create garments that not only make her look elegant on the outside, but also make her feel sophisticated on the inside” says Mimi.

92

Mimi started designing in early 2013. Developing a fashion brand is a painstakingly slow process, which needs much more than just design talent,2 years in fashion time is comparable to six months in Silicon Valley time. Mimi’s partnership in late (Oct) 2013 with another one of my friends, Rich Cirminello (COO of MIMI Tran), helped accelerate her growth curve at an exponential pace. Mimi’s first nationally covered runway appearance was at the San Francisco Couture Fashion Show in October 2014, sponsored by FSHN Magazine and Replete Skincare. Her awe-inspiring collection shared the spotlight with Parisian Haute Couture brand On Aura Tout Vu and left the audience captivated with the sheer elegance and ethereal femininity of her creations. MIMI Tran designs are full of dramatic flair and edgy sensuality, swathed in eternal grace. Every outfit has a dreamy quality to it, making the wearer feel like royalty. Mimi’s natural sense of beauty and fabric has served her well, fueling the momentum to boost her up the halls of fashion relevance. We are total fans of this Bay Area native, and we’re proud to call her our own. The whole world is waiting with bated breath to see what’s next from this designer who belied all trends and soared above the rest, applying her Silicon Valley work ethic to fashion.Feast your eyes on some of her best looks from her latest collections in the following pages and check out the videos of her recent runway shows on youtube.com (click to view) Look out world! Here comes MIMI Tran.

SPRING FASHION 2015 Lauren Lawrence’s column can be read every Sunday in the NY Daily News. Contact: yourdreams@nydailynews.com. Follow: @LaurenLawrence_

“In a recent dream, I was invited as a guest to the penthouse of the movie actor Robert Redford. He had requested my help in designing a ring... the gem to be the center of this setting was a magnificent 40 carat D flawless white diamond. When I left the apartment on the top floor, I became aware of a swimming pool; although out of sight, I heard young voices in the background and congenial frolicking and bantering taking place in the pool. Undistracted, I proceeded to look for the exit. The elevators existed but seemed to be concealed, so I approached the stairway to make my way down. As I neared, it became apparent that the staircase was, in fact, a modern day interpretation of a Villa de ‘Este water feature... with a flowing cascade descending from the first step. I was not alarmed but I was taken somewhat by surprise and puzzled. At this point, I awoke! What does it all mean?”

GEOFFREY BRADFIELD’S

DREAM

— Geoffrey Bradfield (Manhattan, New York)

by LAUREN LAWRENCE | Photo: Simon Alexander

The Interpretation Dreaming of a celebrity penthouse reveals a strong sense of self—you are the star at the top: Only the ultimate will do. One understands that the request to fashion a ring fulfills a strong need to design even during sleep and to envision a scintillating setting. Yet, a matrimonial wish is not out of the question. The swimming pool is a nod to the muse of creation in that water is a birth symbol. In this view, the young voices are that of the ancient chorus representing the explanatory, revelatory inner voice that needs to be heard, and more often than not, listened to. The elevator is concealed because the steps are a part of the process; they provide a broader view of where one is headed. Within the dream, it seems all roads lead to the creative unconscious, as going upstairs and downstairs both refer to the psyche: the ascent, the summit; the descent, a symbol for reaching what is underneath the surface. The flowing water—the eternal wellspring—reveals an outpouring of emotions within the descent into the psyche, the inner self. An attention to details, setting, and scale—the transforming elements that imbue the simple steps with splendor and magnificence—all serve to define the interior designer’s life work. FSHN | 103

Calvin Klein Watches + Jewelry Hosted an Exclusive Dinner Celebrating the Brand’s 2015 Lines at Baselworld 2015 Brand Presents Student Winners of Design Competition at Schools in North America, Europe, and Asia MBIEL, SWITZERLAND, MARCH 19, 2015 – ck Calvin Klein Watch + Jewelry Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Calvin Klein, Inc. and Swatch Group, hosted a special, invitation-only dinner to celebrate the 2015 Calvin Klein Watches + Jewelry at the cultural center, Brasilea Foundation in Basel, Switzerland. Held during Baselworld 2015, the world’s largest watch and jewelry fair, the event also featured a musical performance by the British singer-songwriter Birdy. At the dinner, Laura Burdese, President of Calvin Klein Watches + Jewelry, revealed the three student winners of the watch and jewelry design competition launched last year with IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) in Milan, Donghua University in Shanghai, and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. The winners of the competition, Zhang Yi (China), Anna Hammam (USA) and Ilaria Tartarelli (Italy), presented a fresh vision and interpretation of the Calvin Klein Watches + Jewelry brand through creative use of material and design, all in keeping with the brand aesthetic. The three winners received a cash prize and are having their work displayed at Baselworld 2015. The new 2015 Calvin Klein Watches & Jewelry lines presented at Baselworld 2015 were designed under the creative direction of Mr. Grimm. Highlights from the 2015 Calvin Klein Watches + Jewelry lines include the lustrous and enduring Calvin Klein alliance watch, a linear construction rendered in polished stainless steel for a striking and graphic look. Inspired by urban architecture, Calvin Klein alliance marries sapphire glass, polished metals, and mother of pearl for a bright effect. Another key timepiece includes the spirited and substantial Calvin Klein senses. The dualities of everyday modern life inspired the unique silhouette. This bangle watch is made up of a sleek, twisted form offered in either solid stainless steel, PVD yellow, or pink gold, as well as two beautiful bicolor styles that mix stainless steel with PVD yellow or pink gold.

The 29th Edition of the Goya Awards Featured Captivating Carrera y Carrera Jewels For another year in a row, Carrera y Carrera has been the big star of the red carpet at the prestigious Goya Awards in Madrid. The event is a must for Spanish actors and actresses alike, with both struggling for the media limelight. The actresses wore one-of-a-kind looks, created exclusively for them by renowned, prestigious designers, and complemented these with Carrera y Carrera jewels, making them the undoubted star of the Gala for another year running. Absolutely all the noteworthy actresses visited the iconic jewelry firm’s flagship store in Madrid, where the brand keeps its most spectacular jewels. Unique pieces belonging to the private collection of the brand saw the light this year on the hands, arms, and necklines of the majority of the Gala attendees: winners, presenters, and guests. In other words, the stars of the most important evening for Spanish cinema, Carrera y Carrera jewels were once again the Goya jewels of choice. Not only did contemporary actresses (such as Nerea Barros) and perennial favorites (such as Gemma Cuervo) select the Carrera y Carrera designs, but other attendees like Judith Colell (Vice President of the Academy) and Katrina Bayonas, actor agent par excellence, also succumbed to the brand’s charm. The Spanish roots and daring, avant-garde character of the jewels accompanied the evening’s luminaries. The diamond was the main protagonist, and along with yellow gold, formed a perfect tandem to create bold, modern, risqué looks that drew every eye. This year was a year of marked contrasts in which jewels inspired by nature undoubtedly were some of the clear winners: tigers, snakes, dragons, orchids, herons, and even funny frogs adorned the red carpet of the 29th edition of the Goya awards on a night where glamour with Spanish flavor played the lead. Stars at the Spirit of Istanbul Festival with Yeni Raki NBerlin, 14 March 2015 –The glamorous Spirit of Istanbul was staged for the third time in the “Station” in Berlin Kreuzberg on the evening of Saturday, 14 March 2015. This cosmopolitan capital hosted the cheerful German-Turkish festival where culinary pleasure and cultural translation are valued most. Stars such as the bands Jupiter Jones and Balkanoid entertained approximately 6,000 guests while the well-known presenter and TV starlet Gülcan Kamps attributed the evening an exuberant touch. Gourmet chef Ali Güngörmüs looked in on the event too. “We are presenting the Spirit of Istanbul event to the city of Berlin with Yeni Rakı,” shared Galip Yorgancıoğlu, Managing Director of Diageo Turkey. “We hope that as many people as possible can familiarize themselves with the modernity and internationality offered by the city of Istanbul.”

Pinar Atalay

With free admission, guests experienced the band Jupiter Jones whose breakthrough came in 2011 with “Still” for which they were awarded an Echo. In fact, the song was the one most played on German radio in April 2011. A few months ago, they came second at the Bundesvision Song Contest with “Plötzlich hält die Welt an.” The Istanbul-based group Baba Zula creates a sound all their own called İstanbul fusion by mixing oriental intstruments such as the darbuka, electric saz, and spoons with electric and modern sounds. The third act to perform was the Hamburgbased Balkan band Balkanoid which presented exotic Balkan beats along with DJ Robert Soko. Last, but not least, the comedian Murat Topal with Turkish roots entertained the guests with his showprogram. Guests enjoyed delicious warm and cold starters (Mezze) served with warm Turkish bread – and all for a nominal price of between 2 and 5 Euro per Mezze. It goes without saying that all glasses contained Yeni Raki, the aniseed drink generally known as “Löwenmilch,” which fits well with Mezze and meals when diluted with water.

Murat Topal

In the press area, gourmet chef Ali Güngörmüs whipped up a typical Yeni Raki 3-course meal at a live cookery station together with the caterer Panem et Salis. Furthermore, he showed his ability during a separate show cooking hour. This master chef with Turkish roots runs Le Canard in Hamburg and Pageou which just opened in Munich in November. Delicious food in good company was very important to the Spirit of Istanbul Festival. After all, that’s what enjoying Yeni Raki is all about: getting together to consciously experience the here and now and take a moment to enjoy life – in line with the Yeni Raki claim,“Unrush your world.” The organizers were particularly pleased by this collaboration with gourmet chef Ali Güngörmüs. “We are delighted to have Ali Güngörmüs once more for the Spirit of Istanbul event. As a German gourmet chef of Turkish origin, he is the obvious choice for participating in the event as a special guest,” expressed Dr. Tina Ingwersen-Matthiesen, Managing Director of BORCOMARKEN-IMPORT. BORCO distributes Yeni Raki in Germany. At the international level, Yeni Raki holds 17th place among the spirit brands and is the number one aniseed spirit. Apart from live cooking and a stage show, the area spanning 5,000 square meters also included various lounges, a marketplace for street food, bars, and shops. Most notable and sublimely spectacular, two tables set for 500 people wound through the hall like tuning forks, mimicking the shape of Raki bottles. Photos by Franziska Krug/Getty Images 106

MUSIC BEATZ

TOP

1O Chartbusters by SASON BISHOPE PARRY

Check out these new releases by Fall Out Boy, Imagine Dragons, Bjork, Kid Rock, Madeon, Purity Ring, Kendrick Lamar, Sufjan Stevens, Passion Pit, and more—out now! In music news, legendary producer and guitarest Niles Rodgers has signed a deal with Warner Brothers to release a new Chic album. The 70s disco band, which saw major success with releases “Le Freak” and “Good Times”, spawned rap music’s first big hit “Rappers Delight.” We’ll see its first album in almost two decades drop this summer. You can expect some funky grooves from Rodgers who also played on Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” In other music news, crooner Sam Smith and indie rocker Beck were the big winners at the 57th Grammy Music Awards with multiple wins each. Rock legend ACDC rocked arguably the best show opening in Grammy history. In event news, Rock In Rio USA, which lands for the first time in Las Vegas on May 8, 9, 15, and16, announced its full line-up which includes Metallica, Bruno Mars, Sam Smith, Empire of the Sun, Mana, Linkin Park, and Ed Sheeran, as well as an EDM stage. The festival takes place at a new outdoor venue on MGM properties, built exclusively for the festival’s launch. For details, visit their website rockinrio.com/usa. In other event news, Outsidelands festival sold out in record time after announcing their line-up of over 100 artists, including Elton John, Mumford & Sons, Sam Smith, Billy Idol, and DJ’s Axwell & Ingrosso. The festival will take place August 7 – 9, once again in San Francisco’s beautiful Golden Gate Park. For more information, please visit sfoutsidelands.com. I hope you enjoy this issue of MusicBeatz. Share it with your friends and remember to stay inspired, and breathe some music into your soul daily!

1

“Believe” Mumford & Sons

English folk rockers drop the banjos and beef up with electric guitars for an epic new sound. The first single is a refreshing change for the group, with Marcus Mumford crooning over soft synths— a track that’s sure to be a summer festival anthem.

“Cool” Alesso featuring Roy English (music video)

The Swedish superstar DJ has been gaining lots of attention, and this single should help cross him over with a nice vocal by newcomer Roy English. The video features Alesso as a nerd student that turns into a sexy club DJ.

“Lion Song” Bjork

Iceland’s cutest import is back with a new album (this single is currently on my playlist repeat button), an electronic musical ride filled with beautiful strings and her angelic vocals with a trippy video to match – love it!

“Chains” Nick Jonas (music video)

Wow! I never thought I would say this, but after listening to this song, which could have easily been in Fifty Shades of Grey, I’m a fan of a Jonas Brother. Nick kills it with an awesome vocal over this dark track about giving it all for love!

“Psycho” Muse

Muse is back to its heavy roots with a kickass single, giving us a taste of what’s to come on the new summer release. The guitar riffs just rip through and should have even the most hardcore rockers banging their heads.

“Be”Apl.De.Ap ft. Honey Cocaine & Jessica Reynoso (music video)

Black Eyed Peas member Apl drops his first solo single and it’s a catchy hip hop jam featuring additional vocals by Honey Cocaine and Jessica Reynaso. The video is impressive and looks like a video game.

“Only One” Kanye West ft. Paul McCartney

Yeezus and the Beatle come together for an odd pairing with this surprise song. Kanye drops the raps for his singing voice, soaked in tons of autotune over a nice piano ballad, played beautifully by Sir Paul.

“Really Love” D’Angelo

After hearing this great slow jam, it’s hard to believe that this R&B crooner has been out of the game for over 10 years. His smooth falsetto voice just floats over a Spanish influenced beat and groove.

“How Could You Babe” Tobias Jesso Jr.

This upcoming singer-songwriter has been getting a buzz with fans like Adele, tooting this heartbreaking song. It’s an emotionally beautiful 70s throwback piano ballad that is reminiscent of an Elton John classic.

“Dream” Imagine Dragons

These Vegas alt rockers are back with a new album Smoke & Mirrors, which includes this very sad but beautiful track—they slow things down and Dan Reynolds’ strong emotional vocals cut deep over a pianodriven beat.

LOVE

the

WAITING GAME by JASON MARTINEAU

With the closing of the cold months and the increasing warmth of spring come hope, renewal, and often, new love. Before we get to that part, however, there is that very early stage during which the new potential sweethearts graduate from getting to know each other, to dating, to actually confessing their love and deciding to move forward and share it over some longer time period, becoming boyfriend/girlfriend, partners, or husband/wife. Each of those three phases can be tricky, and must be navigated successfully in order to get to Hallelujah. But it’s not the phases themselves that are so challenging, but rather the transitions between them. The one I hear the most about is the first transition – moving from getting to know each other to actual dating. This often involves the crossing point of sex. Once we’ve become sexual with someone we are interested in (yet do not know very well), the stakes have risen. For many now there is increased attention to the reciprocity of the other – are they calling me often enough? Are they responsive enough? Do they like me as much as I like them? How long should I wait to text? How long should I wait for a reply? Of course, if you have anything genuinely important or of any emotional significance to say, probably texting or emailing is not the best idea. There’s tons of room for misinterpretation, not to mention an implied devaluation of the message. If it matters, do it in person, on the phone, at least in some way that is live and involves sound and/ or image, and living, breathing people – not disembodied words appearing on a screen along with the occasional Emoji characters or emoticons – they work to a point, but…we’ve all heard about that breakup that happened over a text message, or the first “I love you.” Really? But for this article I wanted to address this question of “how long?” I have heard this question in various forms. How long to wait for a reply to your text message after the first sexual encounter? It’s been 3, 4, or 5 dates… suddenly, the other person hasn’t replied to your “good morning,” or “how are you?” in the usual expedient fashion. Oh no! Where are they? Is something wrong? Is it something I said? Calm down. Things are still new. In psychological circles there is something known as the recoil. This can sometimes happen when people want to get close, then actually do get close, then they have that whoa-wait-a-minute sensation, and need to catch their breath and collect themselves for a moment. You know, “Be careful what you ask for…” and all that. Not everyone is ready to jump into the pool headfirst before they’ve even fully checked the temperature of the water. If you are getting a little pullback from your hopeful new 120

other, don’t be alarmed if after a smashing good time they suddenly go quiet for a day or two. Love is scary. You don’t control it. Neither can they, right? You can go with it or against it, but you can’t really make it be there if it isn’t, nor make it not be there if it is. Many people find that overwhelming sometimes. Likewise, there are so many other factors to consider – are both people ready for the next phase? If sex happens again and again, are we now inevitably going to that next phase? With every repeated intimate encounter, are we moving closer and closer to that gushy, gooey, yummy heart thing that so many want, and yet are afraid of? “Oh no, now we have to have THAT conversation, too?” “Gosh, I just like you, can’t we just hang out and have a good time?” Or, “Now that we’ve had sex, that’s IT! It’s ON!” This is another important thing to figure out early on – if you are a casual type, then that’s fine; but make sure the other person is, too (and vice versa). This is a common recipe for someone’s heart to get broken. But let’s say both want the real deal, but need to get to know each other better. Now come the questions, the search for clues: When will that person reply? How long must I wait? How long should I make them wait? Isn’t this just a game? Why can’t I just be real? While I think there is some value in the “game” when it comes to seduction, and mystery does heighten the emotional intensity at times – nevertheless, it does need to be clear that a game is underway. If someone is not replying to your efforts to communicate after intimacy has occurred, and some time has passed (as in days, not hours), and there is no obvious reason, then you are not playing a game by waiting. What you are waiting for is for the person to return to the table. The game should not be about whether or not the other player is playing, but what that person’s next move will be. If you are waiting for the player to return to the table, then he or she may have already shown you what you needed to know. Don’t you want someone who comes forward? Who doesn’t make you wait TOO long? How responsive are you? Who is the seducer, and the seduced? Don’t you want a balance in that mystery? In the end, there is no rulebook for the number of minutes, hours, or days to wait to reply to communication, to reciprocate. It is whatever works best for you, since compatibility is what is being assessed. The other ought to be able to meet you where you are. If they do not, and you examine the reasonable explanations, and they are still quiet, then it is wise to watch and see whether they will show up to play at all. The game does require two people playing – and when they are, there usually isn’t THAT much waiting…
