PUBLISHER’S NOTE

H

ere we are in the height of spring which is the season of transition. Transition is always the one generating fear, avoided, postponed and full of uncertainty. This is why I want to dedicate this issue to what change means to us and what opportunity it brings along the side. It can be looked at as having positive side effects after the pleasantries of going through change. The ability to adapt and have an open mind will create new skills and new adventures. Simply begin your transitional wardrobe by combining winter and summer fabrics. You can also play with layering pieces of opposite textures, such as silk paired with leather or cotton as a base layer for wool. Next, slowly introduce lighter color pallets as the season progresses. Remember when transitioning from one season to the next layering is crucial. Now you have your spring wardrobe to enjoy! Challenge yourself to create new pairings for your closet every day. Learn new words, find new hobbies or pick a sport that you will enjoy during long summer days with your favorite people. These daily changes will create new and richer experiences for the season. I love the spring challenge of excelling in life. Much love, Elisabeth Thieriot elisabeth@fshnmagazine.com

PHILOMENA ZANETTI New sustainable Label from Berlin on its way to New York

About Since her early childhood the designer Julia Leifert bears relation to flora and fauna and environmentalism. Further she always loved beautiful, valuable things with a special interest in garments and fashion. Two affairs of the heart, which were assembled when she launched her fashion brand Philomena Zanetti in her adopted hometown Berlin in 2014. Ten years ago she already decided to live a vegetarian and later on vegan lifestyle and realized that it is not easy to find fashion that matches her perceptions of aesthetics and sustainability. So she started during her law studies to design and tailor her own clothes. She became aware of the fact that her heart beats for fashion. After she fished her studies she moved to Berlin to study Fashion Management. At that time she did not expected to start her own line only three years later. A sojourn in New York City initiated the dream and the inspiration to launch the brand Philomena Zanetti. She fell in love with the fascinating energy of the city, the thrilling vibes in American entrepreneurship and the reception for sustainable and contemporary fashion. She has the vision to give people with a similar conception of quality and view of life an alternative to the fast fashion industry. Whit Philomena Zanetti Julia wants to prove that sustainable crueltyfree clothes and high quality fashion are not automatically antithetic to each other.

Philosophy The name of the brand is a tribute to her great-greatgrandmother. She came from a family in South Tyrol and lived at the turn of the twenties century. For Julia the name symbolizes a fairytale of an old time and epitomizes consciousness of value, relation to nature and deceleration. The name and the memory of her family is a regular and personal motivation: „Step back for one moment and think: where do I come from, where do I want to go to, what do you believe in?“ Philomena Zanetti stands for the use of high-quality, natural and organic fabrics. A essence is the holistic non-violence-philosophy. That includes the prevention of the exploitation of man and nature. The production takes place under fair and transparent circumstances in and near Berlin to ensure the avoidance of more unnecessary transportation and waste. All good ate carefully selected.

JULIA LEIFERT

“I fell in love with the fascinating energy of New York ...”

Most of the fabrics are produced in Europe and labeled with the international sustainable GOTS-seal. Because of love for animals there is no use of leather and fur in the designs. For the same reason only crueltyfree silk and wool apply mutatis mutandis. As long as there is no high quality vegan equivalent. Fashion is always a statement.

CONSIGNMENT

Buying the Perfect Bag by Gabrielle Manchester

Some of the most popular items to purchase at resale are designer handbags. From Louis Vuitton and Prada to Tory Burch and Kate Spade, you can find it all at consignment for a fraction of the price. And with the soaring retail prices for luxury bags, the secondary market means serious business. How should you pick your new purse? When determining which handbag to purchase, I suggest consulting the following checklist. I created it based on my observations of why women choose to consign certain styles and what factors guide my resale savvy clients when selecting a new-to-you bag.

Comfort/Accessibility Do the straps sit comfortably on the body and not dig in? Do they stay in place or slip off regularly? If it is a handle bag, does it fit comfortably in the hand? If it is a clutch, is the size awkward to hold? Does it have an optional strap in case you need both hands free or do not want to set it down? Can it be securely closed and opened efficiently?

Proportions Is the strap long enough to wear on the shoulder? If not, do I mind? Is it spacious enough but not overwhelmingly large or awkwardly small? When you consider the size of the perfect bag, be sure to take the size of your frame into account. If you are petite, a large bag will appear unbalanced. Whereas a smaller bag looks disproportionate on my medium/large body frame. 26

Often women specifically request bags with a zipper top closure. A flap closure can also offer security, but can be cumbersome to constantly open. For example, while an Hermes Birkin bag has a flap closure with a lock, I often see women carrying them half open so that they have easy access. Keep in mind, especially when you travel or are in densely populated areas that pickpockets will target bags they can simply slip a hand in. Is it heavy? If a bag is heavy with hardware before you have put anything in it, beware! Once popular bags, such as the Chloe Paddington, often sit unloved in consignment shops due to their prohibitive weight.

TRANSITION ISSUE 2015

Style and Color If you rotate your bags consistently you can stand to have a larger selection of colors and styles. If not, I suggest sticking with a fairly versatile color and style to be sure that it pairs with a large cross-section of your wardrobe. Here are some of my favorite bag styles for everyday: Satchel: Versatile due to its multiple strap options, this makes for a great daily look and is very on trend. My personal favorite is the Ralph Lauren “Soft Ricky” satchel bag. Crossbody: They are better for your back! With this style the weight is distributed across your body and is less stressful on your shoulders and back. The Chloe “Marcie” and Tom Ford “Jennifer” are popular models. Tote: These are great for throwing in a large amount, and often come with a smaller detachable pouch for those quick transitions to lunch where you don’t need everything in your bag. Popular designer options include the Louis Vuitton “Neverfull” and the Goyard “St. Louis”

Quality Is the material durable? Will it mark easily or wear quickly? How long do I expect it to last? Mid-range bags may only survive a few seasons, but if you change bags frequently and don’t put as much stock into the label on your shoulder, these can be a great option. If you expect your purchase to last you a decade or longer, it may be worth investing in a higher end bag that is constructed with longevity in mind.

Tip: To make any handbag more comfortable, frequently switch the side that you carry it on. FSHN | 27

POLITICALLY CORRECT

Transitional Clothing by George Mickum

Achieving a seamless transition from season to season can be complicated. Depending on your location in the world, the weather can make wardrobe choices even more complex. Let us start with the recommendation that white is not appropriate for Memorial Day. I frequently see rule-breakers wearing white denim the minute the weather starts to warm up. This choice is problematic for multiple reasons; the rule has a long history. However, the most practical reason for waiting is that whites are so easily soiled by pollen and other spring-related dust. For gentlemen, it is important not to bring out the summer fabrics just yet (June 1st or so), and to instead incorporate linen wool blends into suiting. Sport chinos are for casual occasions and thicker cottons knits for evening. The May color palette is spring-inspired, so wear pastels. If the weather is temperamental, a thin cashmere sweater (two ply or less) and a light leather jacket are ideal for keeping warm. Sandals are never appropriate for any place other than the beach and barbeques, and, even there, they are not to be worn until much later in the season.

This Gucci jacket is the epitome of spring. With its light chestnut coloring and singing belt, this jacket will make a great light outerwear piece for the cooler evenings. It is found at Saks.com.

With its splash of rainbow color and thickly knit cotton, this Band of Outsiders sweater will provide complete fun for the transition between seasons. It is found at Saks.com.

TRANSITION ISSUE 2015

These Charlotte Olympia pumps provide a great example of a spring transition heel. They have fully covered toes, indicating they are not quite summery; however, they also have delicate ankle straps, lending a springtime feel. These pumps are found at Saks.com. This Fendi sweater is perfect for transitioning into summer. With a light cashmere base and a whimsical floral orchid pattern, it offers just the right amount of spring. Find the sweater at Saks.com.

For the ladies, spring clothing is floral and colorful. During this time, the ideal garments are chic dresses and light cashmere cardigans. Do not jump the gun and start wearing your sundresses before the summer months. In addition, accessories, such as scarves, should be put away. Women should only wear shorts during summer for the most casual of situations; however, spring on any occasion is still too early. When it comes to footwear, women ought to transition to open-toed or peep-toed shoes. It is still too early for sandals of any variety. When dressing for the changing seasons, color should take two steps forward, and fabrics, one step forward. Fabrics should still have heft to them. For both genders, it is important to not look as if you have jumped the gun. Spring still calls for the incorporation of light jackets and sweaters into the ensembles.

These Tod’s loafers are a great color for spring. They are casual yet give a very definite sense of strength. They are great for an evening out during the week. They are found at Saks.com.

LOVE

Making Time

by Jason Martineau

In Silicon Valley and the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area, the heat of entrepreneurial fire is hotter than it’s ever been. Likewise the city itself is filled with hardworking, career-oriented people, many with lofty goals and dreams of success. With this work ethic, however, comes a hefty price: free time. With so much time going to career development, paying bills, or nursing startups out of their incubators, when do people have time to start up a relationship? I recently read an article by Justine Musk, the ex-wife of superstar CEO Elon Musk, who has so far sired PayPal, Tesla, and now SpaceX. She wrote of his laser-like focus, passion, and determination for work and success, along with his eventually frustrating unavailability for a relationship, for which she eventually divorced him. Of course we admire such visionaries for their business acumen and brilliance, but it got me thinking – at what price does this level of success come? Most of us who have careers that consume more than a typical 40-hour work week have some experience with the apparently limited amount of free time for dating or a relationship. Add in skyrocketing property values and rents, as well as the general thrust of rampant capitalism, and it’s easy to see where all that time is going. If you are running a startup, or building a new business, then it’s likely you give almost all of your time to getting it going. Or you might be someone who simply has to work more in order to move your career forward, and keep up with the economy. Regardless, if you are one of these people, how do you find the balance between self-development, career growth, business development, and developing your love life? You probably have tried the first level of attack – bars, clubs, social media-driven events and parties… and then, when all of that fails, the dreaded dating sites and apps. While we are Tinder-ing and Match-ing ourselves away into the wee small hours, shopping for strangers based upon their photos, laid out in a grid, or swiping in bed while blindly staring at the lonely glow of our devices, messaging with strangers, all in the hope of landing a date we have no time for anyway… the question is searingly simple: what are we doing? Whatever happened to serendipity? All the time we spend staring blankly and blithely into those cold and tiny windows that we clutch so dearly while walking around outside, could just as well be spent looking up, out, and around, and seeing the people who are right there, living and breathing before our very eyes. These are the places and faces we might actually meet, sometimes entirely by accident. But we lose that opportunity when we are 42

obsessively staring into cyberspace, taking selfies, photographing our dinner, or poking around online in case somebody, somewhere, posted something that we absolutely must see (FOMO – Fear of Missing Out). We seem to have somehow erroneously come to believe that salvation lies just beyond the next app, the next sticky platform to where everyone has recently flocked. Online is where it’s at. But, is it? And what, is “it”? Hasn’t this massive exodus into the collective unconscious in which we all religiously bury our noses in fact become the very distraction preventing us from noticing that guy across the table, or that girl on the corner who dropped her bag? Assuming that the free time of the Busy Ones is relegated to those micro-minutes that remain during lunch, or while waiting for their tall grandissimo cappufrappucino latte – perhaps those moments could be spent alert and alive, looking around, catching someone’s eye. Okay, that’s half a solution. What about the glorification of busy-ness? Do some of you use this to hide yourselves from the world? Or are you genuinely that occupied, without a choice? I can’t speak to every scenario, but after asking around for a while, there seems to be a consensus about the larger solution to this problem. If love is something you truly want in your otherwise busy life, then there is really only one way to find it – you have to make time. You have to open to it, and be available for it. And while you might find it online someplace, the chances are far greater, that if you are indeed open, making some time. Then, quite likely, at some unforeseen moment, when you are not even looking, it very well may find you…

Tenerife with Photographer Anny CK My destination for my upcoming travel this time was Tenerife. The mystic island had captured my heart the moment I set my feet on it approximately three years ago. Enjoying the wild Atlantic shore and scenic cliffs, as well as green forest and rocky landscape within less than an hour of travelling makes it almost impossible for me to keep my eyes off the telescope. Tenerife is the largest Spanish island among the Canary Islands and is surrounded by Gomera, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. Despite my big love for the island, my first visit to Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife in 2013 had failed to reach my expectation. Huge buildings and grey industrial installations garnished the coastal landscape where I expected to see monuments of a historical Spain. But a trip to the Northern part of Tenerife compensated for the disappointing experience in the main city

– Playa del Benijo, a surfer mecca close by Santa Cruze Tenerife awarded me with the most beautiful sight. It was here, where I caught my first waves on a surf board, which turned out to be a very exhausting yet enjoyable experience for me. The highlight of each surfing day was the drive to a hidden restaurant embedded in the coastal side near the beach, where fresh fish with a glass of wine was served followed by a bowl of exotic fruits. The food and the scenic beach were surely worth the two hour ride back and forth we took every day. Mount Teide is another sightseeing spot I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to experience the beauty of this island. The volcano last erupted in 1909 and up to now you can still walk through a landscape scarred with black lava flows. It is part of the national park del Teide, a popular and frequently visited piece of nature on the island. Unfortunately, my initial plans to capture the breathtaking sight with my camera literally got shattered while I broke the only lens I had brought along during a hiking trip through the Masca Schlucht. I had the opportunity to finally do so on my third trip to this area and was rewarded with a perfect weather for some amazing shots. One last adventure on my list is taking a tandem flight, which I had to cancel once due to bad weather. But I know it will be taken care off on one of my next trips to beautiful Tenerife.

BEAUTY

9 Lazy Girl Summer Beauty Tips Lazy girls, have no fear, you can still look fabulous with minimal beauty tips, or simply quick and easy summer beauty tips for you to look great all season long. By Stacey Camacho

1. Floppy Hat

This old-glam hat is not only a great accessory to wear this season on the beach; it is however, excellent in protecting your hairline and ears from the sun when you don’t always apply sunscreen as often as you should. This is an excellent necessity to have on hand.

2. Facials

To maintain and attain great skin, book an appointment with your esthetician to get regular facials. Book a facial that is not only perfect for your skin, but for the season. It does cost a little bit, but it’s well worth it.

3. Sunscreen or Coconut Milk/Oil

Coconut Milk or coconut oil is actually more efficient than sunscreen, and natural alternative to wearing sunscreen. When opting for a sunscreen makes sure to find one that is a broad spectrum instead of a regular sunscreen. Simply, because, broad spectrum will protect you against the UVA and UVB rays, whereas sunscreen will just protect your skin from the UVB rays.

4. Primer

Most primers on the market contain silicone. Silicone is an ingredient that is very good to have in your primer to maintain your makeup application. It prolongs your application, as well as retaining the application in tact for the whole day, through rain or shine. Just remember, to prevent your makeup from separating, so you will not have to touch up your makeup, follow these rules: Don’t apply your makeup with your fingers. The oil in your hands differs from the oil in your face causing your makeup to separate either immediately or within a couple of hours. Apply your makeup with a foundation brush. You can use the same foundation that you have used to apply your primer with your foundation, usually a BB Cream ends up being your friend during this season. Silicone and water do not mix. So, make sure your primer matches your makeup ingredients. Since you are using a silicone based primer, make sure your makeup is silicone based, as well. Once primer has been applied, apply your BB Cream – light foundation is all you need in the summer. Follow it with blush and gloss. Eye liner, and mascara if you prefer.

5. Shave Smartly

If you are anything like us, then all of those steps to shave is just too much. Find a shaver that has a built-in shave bars, such as a Venus razor. This allows an even a great shave on your legs leaving no shave cuts. You can skip moisturizing the legs, as long as you find a razor that has built-in moisture bars, as well.

6. Wax it Off

If shaving isn’t your thing, then go to a spa and wax it off professionally, or for an inexpensive, but equally the same result, purchase a hair removing lotion, for example Nair . No fuss, no pain, and good-bye unwanted hair.

7. Start Drying Immediately

As soon as you exit from your shower, take your towel that you use for your hair and with your head flipped upside down, press the towel onto the hair. A towel will absorb excess moisture drying it out. This speeds out the drying process. Once completed, with your tail comb, comb your hair. With your strands comb, your hair will dry much quicker.

8. Spray Tan Protection

Ladies, whether you are using an at home self-tanner or at the tanning salon, I know you want you’re self-tan to prolong as much as possible. Because, self-tanners are drying, sunscreen or something just as moisturizing is all you need tomaintain that gorgeous tan of yours. Apply this formula every two or three days. It depends on how quickly your tan will fade.

9. Moisturizing Socks

Summer is the season to delve your feet into sandals and flip flops, which means your feet will not be happy. Unhappy feet equals to painful feet, so let’s make the feet happy by having the moisturized, instead of stripping away the dry skin on the feet. Wear moisture socks at night as you go to bed, when you wake up, say hello to moisturized, happy feet. 50

SKIN CARE

Replete for transition into Motherhood and Fatherhood What a wonderful time in life it is when we start planning motherhood and fatherhood.

All of this aspects create transition for us and our world which will never be the same again.

We are in love, we envision all aspects of timing, the needed space for the baby, we even worry which schools they will go to before they are born. We can see it all in colors for the boy or girl anticipating the moment they will arrive. I recall that so vividly.

It feels as if the first three months never end after we conceive and after we give birth, until there is sleep. Following that babies start to crawl and develop curiosity that matches a scientist. They love opening things building things, braking things and braking into things. All is part of development and each stage is transition into another stage of development, into what eventually will become fully grown human that never stops learning.

Then I recall how my husband and I juiced before conceiving to assure that our offspring would be healthy in body and mind. We changed our skincare to a more natural type, but soon found that was not sufficient enough. My skin was changing with my hormonal fluctuations. I learned I could not tolerate the added fragrances and chemical ingredients in typical moisturizers on the market. I learned to utilize natural products to enhance my body and to avoid anything harmful that would cause a negative reaction. “My world had changed for the better, thanks to my upcoming children.” The pregnancy is time of most awareness as to how very much everything we do affects us, and the unborn child. We are concerned about changes happening to our body - our size, our shape, and how we are going to look after the baby is born. Then there is the concern about nutrition for the baby and what is penetrating the womb when it comes to quality and content of the products we use during time of pregnancy and nursing.

This is where we come to learn, that now we are at a new stage of things changing rapidly and entering a “new era of conscious living in a green world”. We want to use less packaging and more concentrates to limit the size of landfills. We want to bring home products that are safe for our children to be inquisitive toddlers without risking their life when they get into mischief. COVER STORY

CAMILA BANUS

TRANSITION ISSUE 2015

S

exy, smart, and sophisticated, Camila Banus is one fiery Latina that is taking Hollywood by storm. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Camila got her start in the entertainment industry at a very young age. Growing up she appeared in numerous national commercials as well as Spanish television shows. It wasn’t until her final year of high school in 2008, when she booked her first major role and was cast as Lola Montez in ABC’s “One Life to Live,” after submitting an audition tape. It was Camila’s remarkable portrayal of her character Lola that earned her a Young Artist Award nomination in 2009 for outstanding young performer in a television series. Shortly after receiving her nomination, her role on the soap came to an end. With her bubbly personality and incredible work ethic, it didn’t take long for her to book another major role. In 2010, Banus was cast on “Days of Our Lives,” as Gabi Hernandez, a sweet and innocent young woman with a big heart. However, overtime her character undergoes a dramatic personality shift and becomes very evil and manipulative as a result of people not taking her seriously and her relationships not going the way that she had wanted. When asked about her characters shift in personality, Banus said, “When she starts taking matters into her own hands, she starts realizing that she is becoming happy because all of the things that she wanted are happening and she realized that you kind of have to bend the rules and go against her morality in order to achieve that happiness or pseudo happiness.” Earlier this year, Banus was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series, for her exceptional performance as Gabi Hernandez on “Days of Our Lives.” The Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series went to “Days of Our Lives.” After portraying the character of Gabi Hernandez on “Days of Our Lives” from 2010 to 2014, Banus decided to leave the soap. However, she will return later this year for the shows 50th Anniversary Celebration. It is not only Camila’s passion for her craft but her desire for career longevity that has led to her booking roles that not only showcase her talent but also secure her spot in the entertainment industry as one of the hottest young stars to watch.

FSHN: Can you describe your fashion style? I don’t really have one specific style but I can say that I take a lot of risks. I love bold prints and bright colors but I also love to do a simple clean look as well. I have many different styles and it really just depends on my mood. My favorite thing in style is to keep it classy, elegant, and beautiful. I really love Boho Chic and kind of a Moroccan flare. FSHN: As an actress, what is the toughest part about your job? I feel like I get paid to do the waiting and go through makeup and costuming and all of that. That’s what I feel like I get paid for because acting is the fun part. That is my drive, it is when I’m happy. FSHN: What was going through your head when you found out that you were nominated for your first Daytime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series? It was really exciting. Part of me felt like I really hope I get nominated because I worked so hard on these scenes and everybody seen the effort and work that I’ve put into them. Then another part of me was like “don’t want it so much, relax, just don’t freak out and worry about it.” I was just positive and when it happened I was speechless. FSHN: You’re only 24 years old and you’ve already nominated for your first Daytime Emmy, is there any chance that we might get to see you on any other television dramas or even the big screen sometime in the near future? Of course! Possibilities are always open. My management team is always working on offers and I have a film that I’m working on at the moment. FSHN: What’s next for you, Camila? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I don’t know. Id love to see myself on film but it just depends on what happens in life. It can all change life is crazy. I didn’t think that id be back on Days of Our Lives and now I am. Things happen and this is my journey, I’m just taking it one step at a time. Coverstory Photographer: Michael Anthony Hermogeno

PROFILE

DARKOH from NEW YORK Into the Whole World

German designer, Joyce Darkoh, launched the brand in 2013 after an unintentional stopover in New York earlier that year.

The snow storm Nemo were many people stranded in the city, that was obliviously spinning the Fashion Week carousel for FW14 despite the blizzard. Stuck in a downtown hotel, the designer with a bespoke tailoring background was invited to watch the Winter 2014 presentation of Marlon Gobel, a legendary men’s designer, who strives to embed suit elements in almost all of his collections. For the first time she was inspired to design a retail product with comparable quality.

E

very season, new menswear label and designers enter the increasingly competitive fashion market with the intention of setting a new trend and, at times, just trying to survive the next season. Ever since men have discovered an undetected fashion consciousness, the menswear section has experienced a significant boom. In the midst of the new “suit-up” hype and a return to sophisticated dandy-ness in form of contemporary suits with custom-tailored looks, a small suit label slowly gains the recognition and attention it actually deserves. DARKOH is a young menswear brand that co German designer, Joyce Darkoh, launched the brand in 2013 after an unintentional stopover in New York earlier that year. Combines impeccable aspects of bespoke tailoring – in the form of a retail suit. It reflects the philosphy behind DARKOH, which is to make customized suits available as a ready-to-wear product to the new generation of fashion conscious men, and thus catering to the rising diversity of men’s individual style. “We’re not trying to convince men to wear suits”, Joyce Darkoh says, founder of DARKOH about. “We are happy about every young man who discovers the comfort and confidence a suit can bring but it’s more than a wardrobe; it’s an attitude, a reflection of a lifestyle that comes from within”. February 2015 marked the third season at New York Fashion Week for this European menswear label that uses traditional English cloth from renowned mill like Dugdale Bros / www.dugdalebros.com / in Huddersfield, UK in rather unconventional but trendy colors such as powder pink, aqua blue or lime green. Nonetheless, it is the combination of these colors, with a defined English silhouette, that gives DARKOH suits that touch of distinctive yet sophisticated normality.

86

In February 2014, DARKOH launched its FW 2014 collection at New York Fashion Week and brought on Susan Liebesman, owner of B2B management, as brand manager. Producing the mind-changing Marlon Gobel show during the blizzard, Susan had approached the designer afterwards about showcasing as new upcoming designer for tailored suits and encouraged her to have the debut collection on the runway in New York. For eight seasons, B2B Managegment has been producing offsite shows for MB NY Fashionweek in cooperation with Adam Group Productions, led by Curtis Davis. Their runway production included shows for many top designers such as Rad Hourani, Marlon Gobel, FrontRow, Berenik, Nina Anthasiou, Korto Momolu and many more.

“ I believe it is in my genes and inherited” designer Joyce Darkoh responds when asked how she started and stuck in tailoring. “Almost all family members on my father’s side are in the tailoring business. Aside from it becoming a passion over the years, as a woman I think there is nothing more appealing than seeing a young man sporting his suit and looking comfortable in it.” A graduate of the former Germany’s prestigious Modeschule Schloss Eller, Joyce has spent over a decade refining the art of the perfect suit by catering to a large clientele with individual requirements. As a result, she has become one of the very rare females, in a male-dominant branch of bespoke tailors and suit designers, who exclusively focuses on men suiting.

In response to the high demand of in-between sizes and body shapes, which require made-to-measure services and the request for instant product availability, Joyce collaborated with renowned pattern-makers who have worked and collected their knowledge at Savile Row as well as in the garment manufacturing industry. By now, DARKOH has emerged as a trend-oriented menswear suit line; offering bespoke quality as a comparably affordable “made in England” retail product at a retail price point from $625.00-$845.00. When asked why DARKOH was launched during NY Fashion Week, Joyce Darkoh states, “It’s the Mecca for every designer because nowhere else will you get such honest and harsh critique from an audience of experts that determine whether they give you another chance next season or not”. And, indeed, her first runway show using herringbone and worsted wool, combined with poppy color blocks, gained the brand enormous press and promising media response. Celebrities such as NFL linebacker James Anderson actor and TV host Terrence Jenkins wore DARKOH at red carpet event within the first months. And as a highlight of its first season, DARKOH landed a designer feature in the popular NYLON Guys Magazine. The second season, SS15 debuted at NYFW in September, 2014. The brand introduced a smart and trendy ready-to-wear suit line made out of the finest natural cloth for the young generation of active men. The momentum for Red Carpet events and editorials continued and top celebrities such as the Canadian band Magic!, top model Don Benjamin and actor John Cho were spotted in DARKOH as editorials for magazines such as Bleu Magazine, High Life Magazine, and KoreAm followed. The most recent FW15 collection from February 2015 is now in high demand for editorials and pulls and will be avaible to purchased at darkoh.net soon. One of the biggest marketing tools and a preferred strategy to reflect the brand`s wintended feel for life are collaborations between DARKOH and bloggers.....A trend that is slowly growing in other countries but has provided impressive sales figures for many young US brands. It is no surprise that Dathias Hoang, a young New York based blogger and founder of the Modern Man Journal blog www.modernmanjournal.com, was quickly hired as DARKOH’s social media coordinator, operating the label’s social media appearance and functioning as a link between the label and influencers, who reach out to collaborate.

90

blogger Dat Hoang and Denny Balmaceda at NYFW

DARKOH entered the market at a time when influential music artists from the pop and hip-hop scene exchanged baggy jeans with tailored suits under the influence of Fashion moguls like Tom Ford and Versace. However, the inspiration for DARKOH suits comes from a different. Joyce Darkoh recalls, “I always admired Tom Ford, not knowing that he was the creative head behind the revolutionary FW95 Gucci collection, one that was way ahead of its time. He is a genius constructor, for sure.” But it was a British suit designer with Ghanaian roots, who inspired her at an early age: Ozwald Boateng, who sparked up the rather traditional suit community on Savile Row when he opened his flagship store back in 2002.

TRANSITION ISSUE 2015

It was his use of bright “happy colors” with contrast lining, combined with an almost ergonomically designed slim suit-silhouette, that fascinated Joyce during her years at the Fashion institute and led to many weekend trips to London just to study the distinctive details of each of Boateng’s suit collection. “You can blame the Ghanaian roots in us for our love for colors, I guess”, Joyce laughs,”Kente cloth, the country’s traditional fabric is made out of the nicest and deepest colors expressing a joy for life. It’s amazing what Ozwald designs and combines without violating the strict rules of traditional suit pattern making. My suit designs and inspirations are surely marked by some of his suits, even though I gave them my personal note.” So, what does the future bring for DARKOH? For one, the label returned to its origin and launched in Europe this May after signing with one of the most influential PR agencies in Germany, Reichert Plus, www.reichertplus.com, a PR firm that represents high end brands such as Nobis, S.T. Dupont and Puma. Transition distinctively daring colors. Wearing pink to work becomes a reflection of an attitude and not just a fashion statement......finally!”

Meanwhile, DARKOH continues its mission to bring affordable custom suits to the retail market. As one of the youngest labels to present its SS16 collection at Liberty Fairs NY www.libertyfairs.com this July, the brand is making the next leap to enter the retail market after a necessary focus on pure branding. Apart from some to be placements in stores nationwide, DARKOH is finally launching its own online store in June. It’s accessible through the brand’s website, thus making it easy for US customers as well as for European followers to purchase exclusive DARKOH suits with a few clicks on a laptop, tablet or other mobile devices. Fashion experts predict a bright future for DARKOH, as individuality and unintentional preciseness becomes a core essence of a new suit wearing generation globally. We are convinced that this is a brand we will hear and see a lot of soon. www.Darkoh.net info@darkoh.net USA susan@darkoh.net Germany/ BeneLux: darkoh@reichertplus.com Facebook: darkohmenswear IG/Twitter/ Tumblr: @darkohmenswear

TRANSITION ISSUE 2015

Why the world needs artists Artists are the gatekeepers of truth. Artists have the ability to put thoughts, feelings and tendencies that cruise thru time and space, that are present in the universe at any particular moment into form. Artist are not bound to agendas and budgets, they don’t have to obey rules and laws. Their freedom allows them to be the jesters of the universe. The gatekeepers of truth. I have the feeling this has been the universal truth since the beginning of time. This truthah s been corrupted and pressed into the existing system of capitalistic corporate powers. It is now not the artistic, free spirited people who are actually capable of picking up the free flowing truth that decide what is being amplified. It is the calculating gate keepers of commerce that decide what brain food is being fed to the masses. The problem is, that those who crunch the numbers are not interested in the truth. They are not interested in what makes people happy and sets them free. They don’t want stories that uplift and untie the masses from dependency. The men in grey that are responsible for economical growth only are interested in keeping the people dumb, scared and dependent so they will continue to purchase things that apparently will make them happier.

Be that gatekeeper, spread that word that you feel sets other people free. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presents automatically liberates others. As we become the messenger of light we illuminate our surrounding. Lets not be gold diggers that run after every opportunity. Let us be the ones that provide the shovels. Tools that help to get rid of the mud and dirt that clouds our vision and lets us celebrate junk that sprayed with gold paint. It’s still junk, even though it sparkles. Free your mind and the rest will follow. Free yourself from the wish to own all the unnecessary and freedom will be yours. Artists are the gatekeepers of truth. By Tyron Ricketts

You will not get happier by buying a product. You might enjoy having an item or two but you happiness will not depend on it. Your happiness is dependent on whether you are free from pain and hunger, you have a roof over your head, your friends and loved ones, whether you love yourself and which purpose you have in life. Things, besides the necessities, are not a part of this equation. So how come artists, who have the duty to teach exactly this wisdom of how to be happy and experience this life with all your senses, are being enslaved by number crushers that want exactly the opposite message to be promoted. It is through the control of the medium that the initial purity of the message is being distorted. Who ever controls the medium controls the message. Luckily we live in an age in which the internet allows each and everyone to spread whatever they feel is right. Democracy in its true form can now be executed through the various channels throughout the internet and it will again be the artists that find a way to spread that important truth that needs to be spread so that people can find a better way to deal with life’s ups and down, tests and struggles.

My name is Tyron Ricketts. I am a storyteller, actor and presenter and I actively campaign against cultural and moral wrongs in our society. I was born in a small town in the Steiermark area in Austria as the son of an Austrian mother and Jamaican father. Even early on as a child, I was fascinated by the stage and interpreting different characters. After moving to Aachen I stood on stage for the first time at the age of eight, then later got to know rap music and attended the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus [Dusseldorf theatre] from the age of 17. During the time I spent in Dusseldorf I acquired a recording contract with my rap band and shortly afterwards my first role in a cinema film.

When I began studying Design in Cologne in 1995 I came to the attention of the TV broadcaster VIVA who made me an offer to present the musical show Wordcup. After just one year I was producing this format independently with Panthertaintainment, a company I founded especially for this. More films and TV productions as an actor followed and I became the frontman of the Berlin rap group Mellowbag, with whom I recorded two albums altogether. In the year 2000, after Wordcup was no longer being broadcast by VIVA, I continued to present the format with Eins Live as a radio broadcast. In 2003 I decided to concentrate on acting. From this period onwards there followed national cinema films such as Knocking on Heavens Door and international productions such as Buffalo Soldiers and The Constant Gardener. I also solved cases for three years as Superintendent Patrik Grimm in the ZDF cult series Soko Leipzig. Currently I live in New York and not only combine this with my work as an author but also continue my work as an activist. In Germany I had already campaigned against cultural drawbacks, for example in the anti-racist project ‘Brothers Keepers’ and the film I produced on my own Afrodeutsch [Afro-German] which is used in schools to some extent. In addition I also contributed to the integration prize offered by the German Federal Government ‘RESPEKT 2010’, which addressed the topics of tolerance and integration through music. The task set here was for young people to put their own thoughts on this into song lyrics – the song Alles geht [Everything goes], which emerged through cooperation between Montanta Beats, Julie and me, was the basis for this. In 2011 I supported the competition ‘Heimat Almanya – Zeig uns dein Deutschland’ [Home country: Almanya – show us your Germany], in which young people with or without a migration background were called upon to look into the topic of ‘home country’ and translate their ideas into creative work.

As an active member of the Sanfoka Foundation, together with renowned artists, musicians and other prominent personalities such as Harry Belafonte, Santana and Jamie Foxx, we want to draw attention to injustice in the world and undertake measures against this. Because, as artists, we have been given the privilege to work with the public. This chance has to be taken to do good. True to the words of the 1940s Afro-American actor, Paul Robeson: ‘Artists are the gatekeepers of truth.’

DREAMS

designer

The Designers Dream “Ten years ago I dreamt that I was dying and my last acts as a dying man were to call my lawyer and my mother and make them both promise to prohibit the New York Times from running an obituary. What does this dream mean?” Isaac Mizrahi, Manhattan, New York

The Interpretation Dying, in dreams, hardly ever relates to physical death. Looking beyond the morose ideation, what is more than likely expressed is the wish to terminate or end something in life such as a relationship or job. In this regard, what one does in life must be considered. Creative people such as artists, writers, musicians or designers often fear losing the creative spirit. After all, to create is to give life, not take it away; it is the antithesis of death. In this view, there is fear over a creative lapse. Dying is akin to drawing a blank. Writer’s block, if you will. Inspiration has dried, belly up.

116

In another view, the dream that seemingly concerns itself with death has nonetheless at its core a profound love of living. The continuation of life is of paramount significance: What matters most is living it. Thedesigner’s vast and complex psyche cannot be partitioned into a paragraph or two in an obituary. For what is written, is written in stone; imagination no longer comes into play. Isaac Mizrahi must not be summed up, marginalized or limitedw by the press because he is an ongoing act. He is not formulaic. In the end, one understands that any and all meaningful judgment or scrutiny will be self-inflicted. By Lauren Lawrence

A film by Albert Maysles Featuring Iris Apfel A portrait of fashion- and interior-design maven Iris Apfel, IRIS is a Magnolia release, runs for 78 minutes, is in English, and is not yet MPAA rated. IRIS pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris’ dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. “I feel lucky to be working. If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.” About the Director Albert Maysles Born in 1926, Albert Maysles is a pioneer of Direct Cinema and was, along with his late brother David, the first to make nonfiction feature films, where the drama of life unfolds as is without scripts, sets, interviews or narration. Albert made his first film, PSYCHIATRY IN RUSSIA (1955), as he transitioned from psychologist to filmmaker. Among his more than 40 films are some of the most iconic works in documentary history, including SALESMAN, GIMME SHELTER and GREY GARDENS. More recently, Albert directed the award-winning film MUHAMMAD AND LARRY (2009) for ESPN’s 30 for 30, GET YER YA-YA’S OUT! (2009), and reunited with Paul McCartney for THE LOVE WE MAKE (2011). Albert has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Peabody Awards, three Emmy Awards, six Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Columbia DuPont Award, and the award for best cinematography at Sundance for LALEE’S KIN: THE LEGACY OF COTTON (2001), which was also nominated for an Academy Award. Eastman Kodak has saluted him as one of the world’s 100 finest cinematographers. This year Albert received the National Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama. FSHN | 117

MUSIC BEATZ

“Music can lift you up, it can bring you down, but most of all it makes you feel alive.”

H

ello everyone, summer is almost here and means lots of great outdoor festivals and music! Check out these new releases by; Mumford & Sons, Zedd, Brandon Flowers, Blur, FloRida, My Morning Jacket, Alesso and more out now. In music news, Metallica guitarest Kirk Hammett, lost his I-phone, which normally would not be that bad, but it contained over 400 guitar riff ideas to be used for their upcoming album and he didn’t back them up – Ouch! In other music news, Justin Bieber not only got roasted on comedy central, but he made an appearance at Coachella’s 1st weekend where he tried to get on stage during Drake’s performance. Bieber had all the right credentials, but the stage was full, so he made a big stink and a security guard got him in a chokehold and ejected him from the festival – I guess it’s safe to say Bieber didn’t come back for weekend 2.

In event news, Coachella lit up the desert skies for 2 weeks of music that included a kickass performance by rock legends AC DC who tore through 2 hours of their classics as well as songs from their new album with fireworks and over the top production. Other stellar performances included DJ Kaskade on main stage, Hip Hop act Run The Jewels, which featured a special appearance by Rage Against The Machines Zach De La Rocha, alternative R & B act The Weeknd who brought out Kanye West and DJ Snake who rocked the Sahara tent with special guest DMX. In other event news, Hard Summer festival gets bigger with a stellar line-up including, The Weeknd, Chemical Brothers, Jack U and more August 1 & 2 at the Fairplex in Southern California. I hope you enjoy this issue of MusicBeatz, share it with your friends & remember to stay inspired & breathe some music into your soul daily! By Sason Bishope Parry

“Can’t Deny My Love” Brandon Flowers

The Killers front man drops the band and goes solo for his new album. This awesome 1st single is already lighting up radio with a catchy 80’s beat and Brandon’s massive chorus that’s about love that can’t be denied.

“Easy Rider” Action Bronson

The freshest sound in Hip Hop comes from this newcomer that looks like an overweight banjo playing hillbilly, but instead is an Eminem style rapper that spits amazing rhymes over sick beats. Check out this awesome video and catch the guitar solo!

3

“Problems” Hozier

Take Me To Church singer takes on Ariane Grande for the BBC lounge sessions and just destroys this cover with a kickass guitar riff and a shout out to Warren G’s Regulate! Awesome!

“I’ll Be There” Chic featuring Nile Rodgers

Chic is back after a 20 year hiatus and one listen to their new single is like going back to when disco ruled the World. The track draws similarities to Sister Sledge, “Got To Love Somebody”, but Rodgers gives it a nice spin with great vocal harmonies over a funky dance beat.

“What Kind Of Man”

Florence & The Machine

Florence Welch is a massive vocalist and she’s back with the machine for this epic pop anthem that is heavy in guitars, big orchestral drums as she sings about a deep sadness that’s entrenched in a fiery love that can’t let go.

TRANSITION ISSUE 2015

“Sometimes I Feel So Deserted” The Chemical Brothers

The UK beatmaking duo is back announcing a new all-star studded album and this single which is their 1st original in years. The track stays true to their big rock blocking beat days with mind warping synths, loops and processed vocals.

“Fall In Love” Phantogram

This New York based electronic rock duo released this song about a year ago, but its got such an infectious groove that I had to share. Sarah Barthels soulful vocals glide over Josh Carter’s hip hop groove with a sample taken from Barbara Mason’s, “Yes I’m Ready”.

“I Want You To Know” Zedd featuring Selena Gomez

DJ Zedd and Disney star turned singer come together for a nice pairing of romance and this hot new single off Zedd’s new album. Selena’s vocals work well over a traditional Zedd beat that has a nice buildup.

“Another You” Armin Van Burren featuring Mr. Probz

The World’s biggest trance DJ is back with another radio friendly track that may not go well with diehard fans. Just like Armin’s last commercial single, this is intended for a mass audience with nice vocals and a big chorus over a dance anthem beat.

“Get It” Matt & Kim

Brooklyn Indie pop duo look to capture a wider audience as they expand their sound on their new album, “New Glow” and their 1st single is a fun, sing a long track with driving synths and drum loops that should keep fans smiling.

“Music is the heartbeat of the Universe.”

APRIL 18 – JUNE 4, 2015 OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, April 18, 7–10pm LECTURE by Jennifer Roth: “Israeli Art From the Shores of the Mediterranean to the World Stage” Thursday, May 28th, 7pm CLOSING RECEPTION: Thursday, June 4

HANDS ON is an exhibition of 5 large oil paintings and 25 works on paper by New York-based Israeli artist, Miriam Cabessa. HANDS ON marks Cabessa’s first exhibition in San Francisco and features works created between 2007 and 2014 using found objects and fabric in combination with liquefied graphite on paper, and oil and gold dust on linen. Cabessa’s work explores the binary of process and result. In her practice, the artist places a canvas or paper on the floor, and bends over to directly apply paint to the surface on the floor. Though this process of production is reduced to the most basic of elements—hands, paint, ground—the resulting imagery is often clean and concise, betraying the primitivity sometimes associated with the hand as a tool for painting. The topography of her painting is a smooth, meditative expanse that can look either like geographical strata or digital feedback, depending on the viewer’s worldview. Miriam Cabessa was born in Morocco, raised in Israel, and has lived and worked in New York City since 2000. Her slow action painting has been internationally recognized since 1997 when she represented Israel at the Venice Biennale. Over the past two decades, she has abstained from using brushes, opting to make marks with objects and her body. Her imagery ranges from organic to mechanistic with surfaces that are both haptically handmade and digitally serene. Cabessa has shown extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Israel.

San Francisco Exhibition of PostWar and Contemporary Art San Francisco | 16-22 April 2015 INCLUDING Works from the Collection of Ileana Sonnabend and the Estate of Nina Castelli Sundell San Francisco - Christie’s is pleased to partner with HEDGE to present an important exhibition in San Francisco of Post-War and Contemporary Art works which will be offered at auction this spring in New York. The exhibition will offer major works by established bluechip artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud as well as examples of cutting-edge contemporary art.

We are particularly delighted to unveil for the first time to the public a selection of works from two pioneering art world figures: Ileana Sonnabend, one of the most innovative, daring, and stimulating gallerists of 20th-Century art, and her daughter Nina Castelli Sundell, the visionary curator and scholar who worked to introduce contemporary art to audiences throughout the United States. Ileana Sonnabend devoted her life to the discovery, appreciation, and promotion of new talent, often championing minimal, conceptual and performance works that were outside the comfort zone of the majority of her peers. From her gallery in Paris, Ileana Sonnabend introduced European connoisseurs to the untested American talents of Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jim Dine. A decade later she reversed the process, using her New York gallery to expose Americans to a new generation of European artists. She also brought together a major art collection of her own, one that has never been on the market and that boasts classic examples of PostWar and Contemporary paintings, drawings, and sculptures, as well as major works of Arte Povera. Highlights of the collection will be presented in San Francisco in April, before being offered at auction in New York on May 13-14.

HOW YOU CAN PROSPER WHILE MERCURY GOES RETROGRADE! When the god Mercury was born, the first thing he did was steal his brother Apollo’s cattle, and walk them backwards just to confuse everyone!

The trickster Mercury turns retrograde May 18th at 6:50 pm PDT through June 11th at 3:33 pm PDT. It seems that the planet is going backwards in relation to the earth. During this time, anything related to communications - Mercury’s domain - can go haywire. Electronic malfunctions are common, such as computers crashing. E-mails, messages, texts, memos are missed. Communications and directions are not properly understood. Plans are delayed, often because you are waiting to hear back from someone. Anything started during this time can turn out screwy or strange. It is not a favorable time to send out important communications. Starting a trip during this time is not advised. If you must travel, give yourself extra time to account for screw-ups, such as your luggage not arriving. When you drive in your car, it seems that detours spring up, and traffic appears worse than normal. Auto malfunctions are not uncommon. GPS systems can mislead you.

Important Note!

Mercury goes retrograde 3 times during the year, for 3 weeks at a time. Often, it seems like the effect of Mercury retrograde begins two weeks before it starts! You could feel Mercury Retrograde as early as May 4th. Geminis and Virgos - you are especially impacted by Mercury retrograde - because Mercury rules your Sun Sign!

HOW YOU CAN BENEFIT DURIN MERCURY RETROGRADE

The first two rules of thumb to remember be flexible, and keep things simple! The trickster thrives on making things complicated. Don’t try to outsmart Mercury with complex plans and solutions - take the path of least resistance! Let go of your plans if necessary - allow them to change. If you are a Gemini or a Virgo, you are actually at an advantage here - because by nature you tend to be more flexible and adaptable than most people. Give yourself extra time when making any kinds of plans! You can thrive under Mercury retrograde by performing the following kinds of activities - do anything that begins with the letters”re”. 134

Relax, recuperate, reconnoiter, reconsider, redo, regroup, respond, reflect, rehearse, rehash, reprogram, reaffirm, readjust, rekindle, re-inspire, reread, resupply, redirect, reintroduce, reformulate, renovate, refresh, etc. Mercury retrograde is a great time to finish whatever you have started! It’s a beneficial time for dealing with the past. Want to find an old friend on Facebook? - perfect. If you happen to be one of the rare people who were born while Mercury was retrograde - you should be able to thrive during this time while most people are being driven to distraction with frustration! An astrologer can tell you if you were born under Mercury Retrograde. Allow for the crazy slip-ups to occur - like you can’t find your keys - and don’t get too clever trying to make things work out.
