PUBLISHER’S NOTE

In the midst of cold winter we long for summer in full bloom. The time to heal and recharge has arrived. I suggest we spend more time outside absorbing the powerful summer light and breathing fresh air into our system. Long summer days call for comfortable, airy attire. Finding fabrics with looser weave and softer thread give ease to our sun-kissed skin while light colors reflect the sun to keep us cool throughout the day. After a long winter, our feet are happy to see very little of shoes. The best choices are open-toed shoes with soft straps, which protect our feet as they begin to swell in the summer heat. A pair of flats is another fashionable option that gives our spine a rest from high heals. Comfort, relaxation and balance between physical and mental activities are key to fully benefiting from the summer months. Arm yourself with a soft, washable summer wardrobe that is easty to take with you on new adventures. We have many exciting summer essentials that will help you expand your horizons this season! Much love, Elisabeth Thieriot elisabeth@fshnmagazine.com

CLEAN CUTS & MINIMALISM TO DRESS THE MODERN & SUCCESSFUL WOMAN

“The core TRIXI SCHOBER style stands for pure modernity, natural elegance and feminine details.” In 1984, the brand TRIXI SCHOBER was born. For 40 years, TRIXI SCHOBER’s mission has been creating business and casual wear for women with an exceptional quality. The desire to make fashion that endures trends, combined with clean cuts and minimalism is what makes the brand different on so many levels. Over the decades, TRIXI SCHOBER has established itself as one of the most renowned German designer brands for exclusive fashion.

photographer AVA PIVOT model LILLY hair & make up NATALIE VERMEER

Above all the brand’s aim is reflected in the character of each wearer: sophisticated, modern, elegant as well as classy. Intricate details give each piece a subtle touch of femininity. TRIXI SCHOBER plays with geometry, forming new silhouettes. The designs set the stage for natural female beauty to evolve: to express each individual’s personality; a place in which you are always “at home.” It is the experience of wearing one of TRIXI SCHOBER designs that makes it more than just a piece of clothing. Only the finest French and Italian materials are used to create the TRIXI SCHOBER core products like jackets, blazers, coats, trousers and dresses securing the brand’s premium quality. TRIXI SCHOBER designs and produces two main collections per year with about 80 outfits and thousands of pieces per collection. As the eponym and designer of the brand, Trixi Schober strives to cater to women’s needs by designing fashion that is everlasting and exclusive. She was one of the first women in Germany with the vision to dress the modern, independent and successful woman. In 1974, she launched her first solo collection under the “Joy-Trixi-Schober” label, building foundations for her own fashion brand. In 2006, her daughter Caroline, who grew up surrounded by exquisite fabrics and whirring sewing machines, took on her mother’s passion and creativity by joining the family business. Today, as a mother-daughter duo, Trixi and Caroline stand together at the apex of the TRIXI SCHOBER fashion house: an internationally successful, family-run company with headquarters in Southern Germany.

POLITICALLY CORRECT

DRESSING FOR THE HEAT

by George Mickum

The Heat has arrived! The extreme heat affecting the world is no excuse not to dress with a politically correct flair. One might think that when it is 98 degrees and humid, the unspoken rules of dress are no longer in effect. Quite the contrary! During these times of discomfort, it is even more important to dress with intention. A slovenly presentation can be construed as a sign of weakness. As women accommodate the high temperatures during the summer, there can be a propensity to dress more casually. If you are dressing for the work environment, flat sandals are not appropriate. Sandals with a two-inch heel or higher may be acceptable, but this is a modern approach to shoe choice. Wedges can be worn during the day and on casual evenings, but they are not appropriate for the cocktail hour or more formal situations. Shorts have become increasingly popular for women, even as formalwear. Even old-school brands such as Carolina Herrera and Dior have included them in their lines. When the world changes, so must decorum. I imagine that shorts would be appropriate for more youthful events. With a crowd mostly under the age of 35, wearing them would be interpreted as fashion bravery. Short rompers are only acceptable as casual daywear and nightclub wear. Long rompers have made their way into higher-end fashion and may be worn at cocktail parties. If you have a long romper made of a light summer fabric, I say indulge. Men are the most frequent rule breakers with summer attire. Gentlemen must keep in mind that shorts and sandals have no place at work! As the summer reaches its peak heat, wearing lighter fabrics, not less clothing, is the only option. For those who suffer the heat, I suggest buying shirts with a looser neck size. Going up half a size is not a visible change, but it can allow some much-needed breathing room. Adding a waistcoat can also give you the opportunity to take your jacket off and still appear professional and put together. Avoid the typical men’s workplace color pallet of dark colors. Pale grays, lighter blues, and white are all more seasonal colors that will attract less sun and therefore keep you cooler. Linen is the best possible fabric for summer wear. It breathes and is optimum for the hottest of summer days. If you wear a lot of linen, however, I suggest investing in an industrial steamer. Wrinkles are to be expected, but one must always attempt to minimize the wrinkle damage. When the summer nights cool down, pairing your linens with a light cashmere sweater or even a linen wool blend will complete your look while providing you with the optimum comfort.

PITTI UOMO 88 Pitti Uomo is an international fashion event for gentlemen. It takes place in beautiful Florence, the capital of Toscana region in Italy. The event has it all – the good old and the new upcoming brands, creative projects and collaborations, catwalks, after-show-time events. It’s “The Event” in the world when it comes down to menswear. Pitti Uomo is like an Italian gentleman – sharp in style, good mannered, hot natured and welcoming. An Italian who welcomes warmly all his local and international friends, guests and also the new faces. And if talking international friends, we picked out some to look definitely out for. by Julia Ahtijainen

Pitti Uomo is evolution in contemporary lifestyles. Pitti Immagine Uomo 88, the key international trade event showcasing men’s fashions and contemporary lifestyle trends was held in Florence from June 16 - 19. With its dynamic continuously evolving geography, Pitti Uomo is able to pick up all the signals of new moods in fashion and then present them with new and amazing projects. For example, there is the new section Open that goes beyond gender distinctions to dictate a precise kind of style, or Unconventional, that was created to present the most vibrant voices in the area of luxury underground styles. The looks for menswear of tomorrow are explored by Futuro Maschile and the sections dedicated to fashion research such as Touch! and l’Altro Uomo, and there are the special projects presented by the world’s biggest names, and programs that support new talents. And we should not overlook the other fascinating aspects of the event: from the excellence of the makers of the new classic to the rich world of accessories, to the brands that interpret the modern side of sportswear. Now, all this is being presented from a new angle with women’s collections no longer under a gender-sign but distributed around the fair according to styling criteria. Pitti Uomo is reinforcing its role as the global platform for major names and international fashion groups that choose Florence as the place to launch new projects and take new steps in their

development; for the as yet little-known brands that see Pitti Uomo as the ideal context for establishing their identities and generating business; and for the fashion system’s international players who present new concepts that are destined for the world stage. With a record number of applications from around the world - 42% of the vendors at this edition will be coming from more than thirty countries - Pitti Uomo 88 will once again welcomew its visitors to its unique atmosphere that makes doing business a pleasure and also entertaining. There are 1178 brands at Pitti Uomo, with their offerings developed for the international community that throngs to Florence during the fair – over 30,000 visitors attended the last edition – representing the world’s major department stores and small retailers.

And the theme for the summer fairs is… THAT’S PITTICOLOR! “THAT’S PITTICOLOR! is the main theme of the June fairs”, says Agostino Poletto, deputy general manager of Pitti Immagine. “And it will be about color and colors, the colors we are steeped in, the colors that surround us, the colors that we wear, that are inside us and in front of our eyes. The language of color is also one of fashion’s basic “codes” and once again it will lead us into a full-immersion course, a plunge, into new looks and lifestyles. This summer, we will talk about and design the Pitti shows in color so that we can look at the world in Pitticolor”. With a set designed by Oliviero Baldini, the Fortezza da Basso will be transformed into a kaleidoscopic experience of installations, light plays and surprising forays into…the world of color. SCENT

CREATED FOR THE MODERN MAN The exclusive scent “MAËL” was specifically created for the modern man. The perfume reflects the topic of sensuality. A German created it and a small perfume manufacturer in the South of France produces it.

The modern man – a lot has been written about him. But what constitutes the modern man? “He can – and should be – masculine again,” says Markus Hohmann, the designer of MAËL. “The modern man enjoys his freedom. But he also stands by his personal values.”

The Scent: The Secret of Man According to a study conducted by the Rockefeller University in New York, humans can distinguish between more than a billion different scents. Not just 10, 000, as was previously presumed. The nose has been underestimated. But how do you conquer the nose and its subtle sensors? “Creating a scent is unbelievably challenging,” says Hohmann. “And the most sensual experience, anyone could ever imagine!” For the Eau de Parfum the scent of wild mint, grapefruit, orange as well cardamom and black pepper have been combined. That’s all he will share. The rest remains a secret. For men. 54

This is an area of conflict Hohmann wanted to express with a scent. The outcome: MAËL – Scent of Men. The scent unites the varied expressions of masculinity in one essence. It should be a statement. It should deliver a message. Not with words, but through the most instantaneous sensory perception known to humans: The scent.

The A-Code: The Secret of Attraction If the “chemistry” between two people is right, they will enjoy each other’s scent. Sympathy or antipathy don’t happen consciously but rather form in the depths of our brains. Scents are led straight into the depths of our brains’ hemispheres. Thus, subconsciously recognised scents can make a person very attractive. The new scent wants to highlight a man’s sex appeal with subtle messenger substances, the A-Code, without being persistent: A for attraction you can’t see but smell

SUMMER FASHION ISSUE 2015

About: The Creators of MAËL

The Production: The Secret of Quality The production of this exquisite Eau de Parfum follows the creative process of Markus Hohmann in the South of France. “We consciously decided against production in Asia and aim for 100% top quality from the land of scents,” he says. The Name MAËL, which is a popular name in France meaning prince/princess, fits perfectly.

The Headquarters of this small but ambitious scent manufacturer is based in the Southern Germany. That’s where the extreme athlete and sports model Markus Hohmann designed “MAËL – Scent of Men.” He runs the company together with his wife Magdalene, owner of “MAËL – Scent of Men.” In the beginning only small editions were produced for friends and acquaintances. But the demand kept getting bigger. By now the firm ships this exclusive niche scent to clients all over Europe. For further information visit the web page www.mael-scentofmen.de and choose the English version. Currently is this exciting creation only available to the US market by directly contact at store@mael-scentofmen.de.

POWERFULLY FASHIONABLE Starting from the azul seas, to the flaming orange sun, to the texture of newspapers and inspiring idols, fashion designers and bloggers find their muse in their surroundings. Recently, the fashion industry took a deep dive into history and was freestyling through it with great speed. More specifically, the fashion industry submerged itself into a country that has been getting a lot of publicity - Ukraine. Surely, you fashionistas, have noticed the bohemian look coming back and not only for the annual Coachella. What about Valentino’s Spring 2015 Collection? Does that ring a bell? There was a strong Ukrainian influence. Little do people know, but Ukraine happens to be the largest European country in terms of size. Ukrainians themselves have proved to be very brave, patriotic, and known to never turn down a challenge.

58

Turns out that there is a great population of Ukrainians here, in the United States. And trust me, that does not make them any less patriotic than they are on their homeland. Walking down one of the streets in San Francisco, I spotted a girl wearing a beautifully embroidered peplum top. Judging by her friendliness, I am positive that I was not the first person to approach her with questions about her wardrobe. She was eager to tell me that she was wearing a new upcoming brand, based in Los Angeles, called ODUVANCA. The embroidery is ukrainian-inspired and the design is produced all by hand. These designs are worth turning heads for.

SUMMER FASHION ISSUE 2015

I asked her a bit more about Oduvanca and why they took on the challenge to promote the Ukrainian look here in California, to what Marina Koreneva, CEO and creator of Oduvanca answered me: MK: “Ukrainian embroidery and the combination of colors in ornaments are very beautiful and spectacular. What is even more beautiful is applying traditional Ukrainian ornaments to modern style. It’s a novelty in the fashion world; it creates a new thrilling look; we honestly think it’s very sophisticated. The look of our designs ideally blends with the Californian lifestyle and natures scenery. If you would notice, our Instagram page (@oduvanca) is full of looks emphasize the beauty of Oduvanca, California, and the synergy of the two.” VP: How did Oduvanca start? MK: “I have been wearing my beautiful Vyshyvankas, traditional Ukrainian embroidered blouses, around in Los Angeles and have been getting so many compliments and curious looks. I was surprised at how many times I was approached by different people and asked about the embroidery, material, the style, and finally the brand. I could answer all of the questions besides the question about the brand. My Vyshyvankas weren’t branded and were purchased as souvenirs from back home. It came to me that people really liked traditional Ukrainian ornaments and that this could become a brand. We’ve decided to partner up with designers who were schooled in Paris and Milan, and specially trained tailors in Ukraine and create a very unique new style. When we saw the first design sketches, we were amazed at how the cool traditional ornaments combined with futuristic and contemporary cuts could come to life and tell so much history at the same time.” VP: What does the name Oduvanca mean? MK: “Oduvanca - is a modernized name originated from Vyshyvanka, which is the colloquial name of the traditional Ukrainian embroidered blouse.” VP: Why the Ukrainian pattern? MK: “The Ukrainian pattern makes women look feminine, feel beautiful and chic. Natural soft fabrics are made for warm weather, beach, cruise, fashion events or even red carpet. Pattern is bohemian and at the same time it’s elegant. It’s eye catching. It’s extravagant. The other great feature of Ukrainian pattern is its historic heritage. For many centuries the tradition and skill of hand embroidery was passed from generation to generation. People believed in symbolism of different ornamental symbols and each ornament had a positive meaning to it.”

VP: If Oduvanca would resemble any city in the States, which would it be? MK: “Los Angeles. The Californian lifestyle promotes freedom and creativity and so does the modern Ukrainian generation. ODUVANCA brings the two together. Convergence of the modern Californian lifestyle and the fascinating traditional Ukrainian embroidery, which is essentially our philosophy.” VP: Does Oduvanca make only women’s clothing? MK: “Yes, at this point we make only women’s collections. However, we are considering expansion into other niches.” VP: Who/what inspires the Designers of Oduvanca? MK: “The inspiration for Oduvanca’s art comes from the feel of California lifestyle and the energy that comes from the Ukrainian struggle for independence.” VP: Have the current events in Ukraine been anyhow influencing the designs? MK: “The recent developments in Ukraine have definitely had their influence on the spirit of Ukrainian designers. Ukrainians today want to be heard and are, like never before, motivated to innovate and express themselves. Ukrainian designers, as well, have been on the rise due to the recent international interest towards Ukraine.” VP: How is Oduvanca made? MK: “Oduvanca is predominantly created using cotton and other natural materials. Most of Oduvanca pieces are manually and semi-manually embroidered at the final production stage. It takes 8 - 10 hours to embroider most of the Oduvanca’s.” VP: What are your goals for the near future? MK: “Besides expanding sales and constantly improving customer experience on www.oduvanca.com, we plan to open a first showroom of Oduvanca in West Hollywood in July 2015. Customers would be able to come and feel our handmade masterpieces and have a personal shopping experience. Finally, our goal is to bring the elegance and sophistication of Ukrainian trends to the customer’s look.”

By Viktoriia Parubets

Examples of the embroidery that are in the current collection: love, happiness, power, beauty, family, happiness and spiritual growth. VP: What was the main goal of creating this brand? MK: “Other than making women feel free and happy, beautiful and chic, we want them to feel feminine and strong at the same time. Wearing Oduvanca makes a woman feel like a queen. Oduvanca emphasizes the individual beauty of every woman.” VP: What do you think of the current trend on the runways that expose a lot of Ukrainian prints? MK: “We believe that 2015 became a year of Ukrainian trends. A couple months ago, French Vogue came out with a front page with one of the Ukrainian designers and her embroidered dresses. Fashion world today is being influenced by more and more Ukrainian trends.” FSHN | 59

DREAMS

TOM FORD´s DREAM “I used to have a recurring dream that I have Farrah Fawcett’s hair; in brown, of course.” Tom Ford

THE INTERPRETATION

Since the dissemination of the Biblical myth of Sampson, hair has been symbolically and unequivocally perceived as having magical properties of invulnerability, strength and endurance. This explains why, in the dream world, the loss or cutting of hair reveals castration fears, and, conversely, why a thick, lustrous head of hair reflects a strong self concept. Mr. Ford’s recurring self-empowerment dream goes to great lengths to acquire Farrah Fawcett’s hair. And why not? One understands that the dream can be viewed as a veritable talisman that bestows upon the dreamer a supreme power and invincible might. In that hair is rooted, one imagines the wish for stability; in that hair grows, one recognizes concerns with transitional 70

periods. In this view, ownership of the lush, thick and plentiful hair reflects the high growth potential of the individual. Because it is a wild, untamed entity, Fawcett’s hair espouses the personal need for liberation. To this extent, having the same hair as Farrah reveals the wish to be freed from constraints. In another scenario wherein the designer actually “has” Farrah’s hair, an uprooting would have occurred. This stresses the designer’s need to uproot from all that holds him down. Logistically speaking, focusing on the top of the head represents mind consciousness and signifies that mental and perceptual processes are of uppermost concern. By Lauren Lawrence

rom model to entrepreneur, Draya Michele is making a huge splash in the entertainment industry. While she is known for “VH1s ‘Basketball Wives: L.A,” which returns on July 12th, the former Pennsylvania native has also launched not one, but two successful clothing lines – Mint Swim, an upscale swimwear brand, and Fine Ass Girls, urban street-wear. The Mint Swim line boasts a wide range of chic and unique swimsuits, which are high-end, yet affordable. Draya is heavily involved in the production of each swimsuit and personally sketches each design. She also handpicks each fabric and the colors used in the production of each swimsuit. The swimsuits are designed for the everyday woman, and are meant to compliment a woman’s curves – they’re tailored to give away just enough, but not too much. She has recently expanded her line to include plus sizes as

well as children sizes. Since the line launched in 2011, it has become a favorite amongst many celebrities, including Selena Gomez. Just recently, Draya made her film debut in the TV One original movie, “Will to Love.” The film, which premiered last month, also stars Marques Houston and Keshia Knight Pulliam. While this is Draya’s first major role outside the realm of reality television, it is safe to say that this will not be her last, considering her phenomenal performance in “Will to Love.” To say that Draya Michele is a busy woman is a complete understatement. Whenever she is not too busy running her two clothing lines, or preparing for her next big audition, Draya is also the mother to her handsome son, Kniko. In June, Draya announced her engagement to her boyfriend, Orlando Scandrick, a cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys.

CR: Can you describe your fashion style? DM: I like to wear things that are tight to the body but not too revealing. Things such as pencil dresses that still show off your figure but also leave a lot to the imagination - A lot of black and a lot of white. CR: Who are some of your favorite designers? DM: I love Zac Posen and Alexander Wang. I’m also a big fan of Urban Outfitters. CR: You’re extremely involved in every aspect of your Mint Swim line and not only sketch each design but also choose the fabric and colors. Can you explain the process that you go through in order to create a new swimsuit? DM: The process is that I see it and I usually draw it first. I have a notebook that I carry around everywhere with me and I draw my sketches. Sometimes another bathing suit will inspire me and sometimes a person will inspire me. I’m not the best sketch artist but I can draw a woman’s figure – After I draw what I want it to look like in my notebook I send it to my professional sketch artist and she draws it a lot better than I can. CR: A lot of celebrities have been photographed wearing your Mint Swim line, what do you think differentiates your line from other lines out there? DM: The fact that it is ran by me – I think that my influence has a lot to do with the brand and what people wear and want to wear. I think that me being the face behind it makes it different. Also the fact that I’m trying to cater to everyone, I’m trying to cater to plus size and children as well. CR: Do you have any plans to expand your Mint Swim line anytime soon? DM: Yes, I think that for the holiday season, normally I don’t keep the shop open, however, I’m going to introduce things like intimates and pajamas.

CR: You’re an extremely busy woman and you’re always on the go, how do find the time to stay in such great shape? DM: I like to hike and I have a hiking trail really close to my house, which is really convenient. I drink a lot of water and I’m also really into trying new things just to keep myself entertained. There are times that I’ll try different cleanses and different tea’s – small stuff like that for about a week. CR: When you’re not too busy with filming or working on your swimwear line, what does a typical day in the life of Draya Michele consist of? DM: A typical day is a lot of working, I tend to go to my factories to check on things and make sure that everything is getting done. If I have a day off I usually like to have Mondays off and I spend the day pampering myself – I get my nails and feet done, sometimes even waxing or a spray tan. If I really have a lot of time off I’ll get a massage. That’s a typical Monday. CR: As a young and successful entrepreneur, are there any other areas that you would like to venture out to or explore? DM: Everything! I recently broke into acting, which is new for me, and I have a movie that came out on June 27, called “Will To Love.” I have a really big role and I just threw myself into it and focused and I ended up being better than I thought. Now I just want to try more acting, I want to do it all. CR: You’re also involved with “Fine Ass Girls,” can you tell us a little bit more about that? That’s my Urban Line. It’s geared more towards younger DM: girls and it’s just like urban street wear. It consists of t-shirts, hats, and some dresses. This December we also introduced swimwear. I have had the company since 2012 and it has just kept growing every year. It’s really fun and keeps me entertained. By Christopher Renteria FSHN | 77

LOVE

Longing

Desire – perhaps the most potent of forces behind all love relationships. Whether it’s the desire to consummate feelings of physical attraction, desire to share a romantic connection, or the desire to simply be together, it is that same, urgent, yearning, hopefulness that compels us. The experience of anticipation can be inspiring, motivating, and exhilarating. And when we are separated from our beloved, during the downtime, while we wait, we experience an even deeper but familiar subset of desire – longing. Longing can be pleasurable or painful, depending upon whether or not it will ultimately be fulfilled. The psychologist and philosopher Dr. Aaron Ben Ze’ev has done extensive research into the nature of longing and how it factors into our experience and interpretation of love. In every case, he identifies a key element – a feeling of incompleteness, of something missing. Nestled within longing is the sensation and wish that we will feel whole again, once we are given that thing we are longing for. He points to the idea that we often tend to desire much more than we can ever have, that in fact our desires can be infinite. Therefore, an incomplete romantic experience can be exceedingly emotionally loaded. He names two categories of romantic longing: either for a relationship to be upgraded, or for one to be resumed. The latter case is obvious in situations in which a relationship has already ended, and in the aftermath one or both parties are now having feelings of remorse or regret. The first case is more interesting, however, as it is one many of us experience, and so is worth teasing apart a bit.

by Jason Martineau unfulfillment of love, merely an intensification of unfulfilled desire. Thus, the adage stating that “we always want what we can’t have.” In most cases, this kind of longing is bound to cause suffering. If, however, the longing is the result of fulfillable desire, something we will ultimately get to have, and we know we will have it, then we can relish and savor it. We can miss the person, knowing that sooner or later we will indeed be with them once again. We have something to look forward to, and the feeling of anticipation can be just as intoxicating as when we finally have the opportunity to enjoy our beloved once more. Part of the mystery of the early stages of a love relationship is in not knowing whether or not it’s going to actually pan out. We are not yet certain that this new person in our life will continue on the same path we feel ourselves to be on, and so we vacillate between hope and doubt, self-protection and self-abandonment. This can be very difficult to sustain over a long period of time. Therefore, the most important determination to make, whatever your situation, is to know how much of this emotional intensity that you are feeling is actually love, versus how much of it is the hope for its eventual fruition, and to not confuse the two. With love there is always risk, though we can minimize the risk to some degree by our ability to separate a genuine feeling for another person from our desire for reciprocation. Longing can be beautiful, or heart-wrenching – ultimately the choice is up to us…

The three classic examples of this are: extramarital affairs, long-distance relationships, and cyber love. These are all instances in which ultimate, long-term consummation is not likely. In extramarital affairs, while people sometimes do leave their spouses to be with a new love, more often than not they tend to stay with their existing partners. In long-distance relationships, the actual physical separation of the two parties is a big factor in protracting and extending the sense of longing, as it is often difficult for either party to relocate and completely change their lives for the sake of the relationship (though it does happen sometimes). Cyber love is similarly unfulfilling since in many cases the two parties may never meet in person at all. Add in the element of anonymity, and this, too can be rather exciting, though perhaps ultimately disappointing. All of these scenarios intensify the feeling of longing. The problem with these is that in every case it is easy to confuse that longing with the experience of love itself, since longing has an emotional intensity to it, just like love. This can lead us into thinking that the strong emotions we are experiencing in such cases are indeed love, when in fact they are the 80

L

ong story short: New Zealand is one of the most exciting travel destinations ever – period. Getting there is a completely different story though. For Europeans the land of Elves, Dwarfs and Hobbits is pretty much the end of the world. It takes you about two days to get there. So you are good advised to plan for a nice stop-over like Singapore or Hong Kong. If you live in the Bay Area you are better off - there are some 13 hours direct flights from San Francisco to Auckland. The most popular way to travel the land of the Kiwis is a camper van. If you stay long enough it’s worth considering to buy your own, else there are almost unlimited options to rent one. We got a rather small self-contained, two berth van, which turned out to be quite handy for freedom camping. Booking well in advance is recommended especially during holiday season which is around Xmas. It almost seems that the entire country goes on vacation at the same time. Also prices for camper vans quadruple during this time. New Zealand is a small country, similar in size to Great Britain. With a population of only four million people it’s also gloriously uncrowded. It consist of two main islands, Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island) and Te Waipounamu (South Island) and many smaller islands lie offshore. If you got less than three weeks to travel it’s really recommended to only visit one of the islands and come back to see the other one. We had like five weeks to visit both and it’s really hard to tell which we liked better. If you are more into wildlife, hiking and glaciers you wanna see the southern part, whereas the northern island holds beautiful endless beaches, geothermal wonders like Rotorua and not forget to mention the Shire of Hobbiton. Travelling in New Zealand is quite easy – New Zealanders are known for their easy-going nature and official language is English. We arrived in Auckland in the end of January the middle of summer and headed straight to the Bay of Islands which is located north and one of the most popular fishing, sailing and tourist destinations. This picture perfect paradise is an awesome place to get adjusted to New

Key Summit Track in Fjordland

Zealands laid-back live style. If you are around this area it‘s worth checking out the Poor Knights Islands for some superb scuba diving. In NZ you got small airports even in the most remote locations, which are operated by Air New Zealand. Prices for domestic flights are reasonable and also the fasted way to bridge the two Islands. Arrived on the South Island we picked up our camper van, skipped Christchurch and drove directly to Kaikoura for some lovely seal colonies and excellent whale watching. Helicopters and ultralight air crafts are a bit more pricey but absolutely worth it, as the pilots know where to best spot the giant marine mammals. Being a city boy - our first night in the wild was an extraordinary experience. Just us, the ocean and the Milky Way. Luckily enough there should be more of them to follow. Just in case you are one of these adrenaline junkies - who only came to the Southern Island to get to the adrenaline capital of the world Queenstown as fast as possible - you should definitively take a detour to do the cave stream mentioned in NZ Frenzy (B17). On the same detour Arthur’s Pass and Devils Punchbowl Falls make a first-rate full day hike. In the center of Southern Island you can find Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki which grant stunning views at the Southern Alps and Mt Cook, the highest peak at 3754 metres. Sir Peter Jackson chose this area as the setting for “Lake-town” in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. It also happens to be one of the best spots in the world for star-gazing. In this outstanding landscape walkers and cyclists can experience some of New Zealand’s iconic outdoor activities. Going further south there are penguins, sea lions and dolphins. We decided to make it all the way down to the Catlins and stay in Curio Bay (H6 in NZ Frenzy) to watch the rare Yellow-eyed penguins and swim with wild hector dolphins. The water was ice cold and the only surf shop to rent a wet suite was closed. Still it was totally worth it. FSHN | 85

A hot shower and a glass of New Zealand’s tasty wine in the evening made you forget it all. After visiting Milford Sound we spent a few days in Queenstown to figure out what the fuss is all about. It got a stunning scenery and huge range of activities like ludging, shotover jet, bungy jumping as well luxury day spa and top-notch dining. We had it all in the exact same order. The western part of the Southern Island also happens to be one of the rainiest regions in the world. Still the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier are must-see attractions. We heard a lot of good stuff about Abel Tasman national park and also wanted to do at least one of the Great Walks, which are premier walking tracks through some of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring landscapes so we opted in for a 4 day guided hiking and kayaking tour. Guided tours include also overnight camping in a tent. Before retuning to the Northern Island we tasted our way through as many vineyards in New Zealand’s flagship wine region Marlborough as possible. From Picton we took the ferry to the capital of New Zealand - Wellington. How this went and what else can be discovered on the South Island ia about to come in another issue of FSHN.

My wife Karoline and I are a married couple in our mid thirties based in the greater Berlin area Germany. We met almost seven years ago fortuitously on the street, fell in love, moved in together, travelled the whole world, got married and live happily ever after. Just recently our daughter Klara was born. She is adorable and our most exciting and yet most challenging adventure yet. Being all day in office buildings in our day jobs we love to travel, be in the country side, encounter new countries, cultures and people a lot.

My passion for photography started when I was like twelve years old and allowed to use my fathers SLR. My very first own SLR was a used Nikon F90X with only one standard zoom lens and I still got it today. Technology evolved and now I am lurging around a whole bag of DSLRs and lenses but the passion remaind. My wife got infected too mostly because of all the priceless memories we were allowed to carry back home all banned on film. Every winter when we sit at home looking at all the pics we are dreaming about the next destination to explore. FSHN | 91

he exhilarating journey of my life began on the sleepy, sunny shores of Florida’s coast, in a town called St. Augustine. Beginning here, and travelling the world, I realized that dreams could and should be manifested.

As a girl I became passionate about moving people and touching them emotionally, making them laugh, communicating and telling stories. These passions developed and grew, which led me to the theatre, where imagination and pretending fed my creative needs and became a way of life and an exciting path towards creative expression and fulfilment. I am thrilled by the numinous, spell-binding present moment which acting, as well as modeling can create, and in which the spectator is suspended. I am currently based in Europe and occupied as an International Model. Through my work, I try to create more than just images, but instead, feelings, ideas, concepts and stories. I aspire that these works continue to move, touch or humour people, but most importantly that they be a spring of inspiration to those waiting to realize their dreams. FSHN MAGAZINE

My name is Elke

Vogelsang, I’m 43 years old photographer working and living in Hildesheim, Germany. My husband and I have three Spanish rescue dogs. They are my inspiration and find themselves in front of my camera very often. All three of them are rescue dogs from Spain. Noodles was saved from a kill shelter in the South of Spain. Scout was found with her siblings next to her dead mother somewhere in a field near Zaragoza. And Ioli’s mother arrived in very bad condition and pregnant in Germany.

108

Dogs are funny characters. They find pleasure in the most mundane things. My dogs are my joy, recreation and constant source of laughter. They can be shy and sad as well. They comforted me during stressful times. I can’t put into words how much they mean to me, so I guess trying to express this in pictures is only natural. They are indeed family. The kind of family members you love to have around and never get into trouble with, as they are unpretentious and forgiving. I would not say I prefer dogs to humans. After all, there are people who mean the world to me, too. But I definitely say that they are the most wonderful companions and a great enrichment to our lives. I hope I can at least give them back half of what they give us. I have a book coming out in September telling our story. It’s called “Nice Nosing You” and is available for pre-order.

INTERVIEW

Taylor-Ann Hasselhoff Being the new girl is hard, but Taylor-Ann Hasselhoff makes it look easy. From the moment she appeared on Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, she has been a fan favorite. Her charisma and down to earth personality make it hard not to love her. Not only is she super sweet, but she is also super driven. Having famous parents can be hard because people think you get everything handed to you. Despite having a famous dad, Taylor had a pretty normal childhood and her parents taught her good values. Now Taylor is independent and has several business ventures. Taylor is a cast member on E Network’s Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, records music, and is the managing editor and host of Bellus magazine. Taylor is the new girl in season 3 of Rich Kids of Beverly Hills. She came on the show and wanted to break the stereotype of kids who have rich parents. She wanted to prove that they do work and are successful on their own. All of the cast members are successful in their careers and make their own money; they don’t rely on their parents. Taylor was exposed to reality TV briefly when her family filmed Meet the Hasselhoffs, but being a cast member on a reality TV is a lot more work. Filming is time consuming and lasts about 3 months. Being on the show allows Taylor to travel to new places and show the world who she is. The show is like a video diary and later on in life she will be able to show her kids and grandkids. Even though Taylor came on as a cast member in the third season, it was easy for her because of how nice everyone was. Aside from her magazine, Taylor is also extremely passionate about music. She has been singing ever since she can remember and got it from both of her parents. She began recording and performing with her sister Hayley and recently has branched out on her own. Right now she is really focused on her music and is working on her album. She is in the studio almost every day recording. Her new single collide was just released and is now available on iTunes. The song is all about being you who are and embracing it. Taylor wants to reach the masses in a positive way. She stresses the importance of following your dreams and not being afraid of challenges. Her message and positive attitude definitely makes her a role model for people to look up to and she is great addition to the cast of Rich Kids of Beverly Hills ML: How was it joining the cast as the new girl? TAH: I think when you go into any situation where they have already had 2 seasons it’s a little bit awkward just because when you’re with someone for extended amount of time you get comfortable with them, so it was a little uncomfortable in the beginning but they were all really friendly. ML: How does your family feel about you being on the show? 112

TAH: I came from an amazing platform so they were like okay if you’re going to go on any show that’s a great place to get your message out. They said we know who you are, be true to yourself. Stay humble and don’t let drama take over. ML: Did you have any reservations about being on the show? TAH: You never know what the outcome will be. At the end of the day if people don’t like you that’s okay. Make sure you’re secure with yourself and don’t let that bother you. ML: What is your favorite part about being on the show? TAH: When I’m 80 years old I can tell my grandkids I was on a reality show and show them what I was like when I was 20. ML: Is there anything challenging about being on the show? TAH: It is a lot of work, we’re always shooting. We started shooting in the beginning of February and shot for about 3 months. It was very time consuming, but I got to go on great trips. I went to New York, London, and the Bahamas. ML: What do you ultimatly want people to learn from the show? TAH: I wanted to join the cast and change the image of rich kids. A lot of people think they’re spoiled and use their parent’s money, but actually everyone has their own career that they work hard at. I work really really hard; I started my own magazine about a year ago. Sometimes doors can be opened because my dad makes a phone call, but things are twice as hard once you’re inside. I’m starting from ground zero. Hopefully I can inspire other people to follow their dreams. ML: When did you first get involved in music? TAH: My mom sings and my dad sings. Me and my sister sang together for about 2 years. It’s always been a huge passion of mine. It’s a therapeutic way to release what is going on in my life. ML: What inspired your new song? TAH: ou can’t be afraid to be who you are. Be true to yourself. It’s a song to remind you hey if you’re weird embrace it. Embrace who you are. Don’t try to be something you’re not. ML: Are you more focused on music right now? TAH: Yeah definitely. I’m in the studio almost every day. Hopefully we’ll have a full album by the end of the year. ML: What do you want people to know about you? TAH: It’s important to reach out to the masses in a positive way. I feel like reality TV can go one way or another. Hopefully I can be a good role model. Follow every dream and every passion that you have. I want to inspire other people to not be scared of challenges. GLASS CHIN REVIEW

Redemption is such a thing in which so many people are searching for in their problematic and unsettled lives. Here we find our main character, Bud (Corey Stoll), a former boxing champion searching through his past and future to make ends meet, survive, and adapt to his unsteady situation. Led by great performances across the board, Noah Buschel’s latest feature Glass Chin, which he penned and directed, is a deliberated real life human drama that insights us with the despondent and painful feeling of a struggling has been, impacted with crime overtones which helps round out and flavor the film into the effectively realized crime drama that it is. The film opens with a classic boxing movie running scene, with our main character Bud Gordon suited in sweats and a sweatshirt running through the night lights of the city, setting the noirish and melancholy tone for the rest of the film. Bud Gordon is convincingly characterized by Corey Stoll (Midnight in Paris, Ant-Man), who proves that he has the chops to lead a film, and do it recognizably well. We’re dropped right into the lives of Bud and his quick witted and philosophical girlfriend Ellen (Marin Ireland), who are living in a shabby beat down apartment pondering what could be, and what’s already been done. Buschel’s film is most successful and at its most believable when showing us the personal and intimate moments and interactions between Bud and Ellen, feeling as if we are in the room with these two struggling lovers. Buschel’s ability to capture these tender and connective moments indefinitely builds for a more realistic and touching experience for the audience.

Bud is an erstwhile gloried boxer, who took a jab that brings him to the floor, physically and emotionally. Not only is he feeling the flop as a boxer, but as a restaurateur as well. His soon desperation brings him directly in the line of the astutely sharp, smooth talking, but danger inflicting J.J. Cook, an artsy restauranteur and crime mogul who will do anything to have the power of owning people. He promises Bud the reprisal of his failed restaurant, giving a now gullible and vulnerable Bud a glimpse of hope to redeem himself in some form or another. J.J. Cook is played brilliantly by the great Billy Crudup, giving us such a restrained and polished but also eerie, obsessive, and pitiless miscreant of a character, reminding us how talented and skillful he truly is. Bud is soon tagging naively alongside a friend of J.J.’s who is uniquely styled, peculiar, and who also seems to take care of the dirty work for Cook. Without spoiling, Bud is helping train an up and coming boxer who has high expectations to meet, and is being applauded as the next champion. But with J.J. involved, things are up in the air, certainly still under his control. Will Bud’s redemption come with ease, or slip farther away from his grasp? We’re not given much backstory or development detail in these characters, besides mentions of Bud’s previous glory, but that doesn’t take away from the sentiment we feel for our main character and what he’s going through. The theme of redemption is very common, but it’s a topic that doesn’t grow tired because it’s invariably relatable, with Buschel playing this card smartly and to his characters benefit instead of tediously and obnoxiously. I loved Buschel’s use of long takes, close ups (particularly a scene in which FSHN | 115

FSHN MAGAZINE

Crudup and Stoll sit across from each other at the restaurant and have an acting match of their own, which steers to Crudup leaving us with a creepy and menacing smirk), and mainly his shots simplicity and elegance, which really help a humane story and film like this from becoming overshadowed or pushed to side in favor of style or flashiness. The performances here are executed well, played committedly and engrossingly by the actors involved. Corey Stoll, who gave an Oscar nominee worthy performance in Midnight in Paris, is on a roll, proving once again he is immensely adept at what he does. Billy Crudup embodies

his character he’s given and runs with it in an evocative, arresting, scene stealing performance. Just as prominent is, Yul Vazquez, who does notably terrific work here, as a flamboyant and flashy working pal of J.J. Cook’s. Marin Ireland plays Buds girlfriend, and her much enjoyed performance is very vital and valuable to the film because it adds that touch of realism and perception from a person who truly knows our main character. This is a poignant, absorbing, and adroitly crafted film that effortlessly connects and envelops us in its story and characters as well as yielding justice and opulence to the genre of crime annexed with drama. I don’t suggest overlooking this in the coming film season, Buschel has constructed a knockout. Written by Jake Luis Garza

Q&A with Noah Buschel, Director of “Glass Chin” JG: To me Glass Chin was so realized and deliberated by you that the film never falters or loses touch whether it be tonally, story wise, characters, the cinematography, etc. It really all works so seamlessly, is this because you go into shooting knowing exactly what you want and execute that, or are you the type to come across new things here and there while shooting, whether it be problems or things you didn’t plan on happening that surprise you and you just learn to make them work? NB: I pretty much know exactly what I want, yeah. I storyboard every shot. Like, I do a full on big comic book painting of every shot. So there’s the script, and then drawing the whole movie in detail, you pretty much know exactly what you want. And then if you’re working with a good D.P. and lighting and a good location scout and art department... Glass Chin was the storyboards exactly. And some of the stuff we shot on a set we built, which is my favorite way to shoot a scene. I don’t really like location shooting. The authenticity of real locations isn’t that interesting to me. I’d rather the movie feel a little bit like a set, a little bit of a heightened reality. With a set, it’s easier to create the right atmosphere, control the energy, keep it at a certain level. That container. JG: What was the founding idea and passion that led you to further your interest and write Glass Chin? Was there something specific that made you eager to tell this story? NB: It was a while ago. I know I was in a relationship that was beginning to deteriorate. And she was in the adjoining room when I wrote it. I vaguely recall feeling like a boxer, 116

cornered-- so the main character came out as a boxer. And I also felt like a person who was getting framed, made to appear guilty, scapegoated. So the boxer in the script gets framed. I was doing some framing of my own too. It works both ways. So I watched a lot of movies about people getting framed. Movies like Raw Deal, Marked Man, Hell on Frisco Bay, and Stolen Identity. In these movies, you have young medical graduates wrongly confined to prison. Things like that. Innocent people accused of horrible wrongdoings. And so, yeah, none of us get by without being accused of something awful at some point. And a lot of the times we feel like it came out of a misunderstanding. That’s not me, you think. That’s not what happened. That wasn’t my intention. I’ve been misunderstood. I’ve been framed. Something has been taken out of context and is being used against me. I’m being put down unfairly. Sometimes we are even framed for good stuff. And that can be equally uncomfortable. Someone might say how great you are, or how something you did was so great. And of course, you know it wasn’t so great. You know that you’re not so great. And you know that you’re not so terrible either. But often we are being framed as great or terrible. And we have to find a way out of those frames. That’s sorta what the movie is about maybe.

Royal Wedding Cinderella Story in Sweden S

weden loves a royal fairytale. The recent wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist marks the first time in centuries that a Swedish commoner became a princess. The relationship caused some royal tension when it was first announced in 2010. The beautiful new princess had a wild side. Before meeting her Prince Charming, the stunning model had posed topless in a Swedish men’s magazine.

The bride, with a new title of HRH Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland, was stunning in a gown by top Swedish designer Ida Sjöstedt. The gown of crepe and silk organiza, reminiscent of Kate Middleton’s wedding look, featured handmade lace sleeves and a cathedral train. Her new inlaws, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, gifted her with a spectacular emerald and diamond tiara.

Fast forward to a June day in 2015 and an exuberant royal wedding with numerous European royals in attendance. With church bells peeling, the royal guests listened to songs picked by the bride and groom including Rihanna and Coldplay.

The romantic wedding day included lots of kissing and a touching toast by the groom, “Today I am the happiest man in the world. Sofia, you fill my life with love and happiness. With your love I will be able to overcome all challenges. Dear Sofia, I love you.” By Elaine Mellis

Sony Music has also been named as a defendant for continuing to support Dr. Luke. Luke also countersued claiming that the suit is a frivolous cover-up to a bitter contract dispute. Event Raised Funds To Accelerate Medical Breakthroughs For Lyme Disease FSHN Magazine Publisher Elisabeth Thieriot, a Lyme disease survivor, supported the Bay Area Lyme Foundation, the leading national nonprofit funder of innovative Lyme disease research, along with more than 400 celebrities, philanthropists and noteworthy scientists at the third annual LymeAid at a private estate in Portola Valley near Silicon Valley in California. The benefit dinner and concert raised more than $600,000, of which 100% went directly to fund research for Lyme disease. More than 300,000 Americans are diagnosed with this potentially debilitating disease each year. “As the problem of Lyme disease continues to grow, we are grateful for the support of such a broad range of scientists, physicians, patients and celebrities,” said Linda Giampa, executive director, Bay Area Lyme Foundation. “We are seeing great opportunities to fund incredible research that we are hopeful will help us identify an accurate diagnostic and cure.” Huey Lewis and the News brought the power of love to the fight for a cure for Lyme disease, and got the audience to their feet. The philanthropic rockers donated their performance to help the cause. Founding band member Johnny Colla’s daughter, Allison, suffers from Lyme disease. Huey Lewis shared his thoughts, “It’s a challenging disease, and my hope is that the funds raised today at LymeAid will help find better diagnostics and a cure so that others do not need to endure what Allison has.” More than 30 researchers from a dozen institutions, including Johns Hopkins University, University of California San Francisco, Stanford University, Tulane University, came to show their support for the cause, and to share their scientific insights with attendees. One physician in particular, Richard Horowitz, MD, author of “Why Can’t I Get Better,” wrote a song about Lyme disease and was the opening act for Huey Lewis and the News. His ballad had the audience to their feet. “Meeting the scientists working with Bay Area Lyme Foundation to solve the challenges of Lyme disease, and seeing their enthusiasm for their research, gives me great hope for the future,” said Daisy White, Health Advocate for Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster who attended LymeAid in place of Yolanda 124

to learn more about the disease to help Yolanda overcome it. Yolanda Foster, a high profile sufferer of Lyme disease, is married to music producer David Foster. “Since our inception three years ago, we’ve been honored to have numerous researchers and physicians embrace our mission and join our cause, and are grateful for having so many of them, as well as the donors that support their efforts, at LymeAid,” said Laure Woods, founder and president, Board of Directors, Bay Area Lyme Foundation. “The continued support of our donors has made it possible for these researchers to offer an impressive and growing body of research about Lyme disease.” Numerous celebrities, many touched by Lyme disease, supported the event including: Yolanda Foster, who along with her husband, David, were honorary chairs of the event but did not attend due the severity of her symptoms of Lyme disease; Elet Hall, the 2014 American Ninja Warrior and a Lyme disease sufferer; Johnny Colla of Huey Lewis and the News, whose daughter Allison has Lyme disease; philanthropist / actress Jane Seymour who departed the Cannes Film Festival early to attend; musician and Lyme disease survivor Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates, who chaired the event but was unable to attend; and Kathleen McClellan Sain, who hosted TLC’s For Better or For Worse.

What is Lyme disease? One of the fastest growing vector-borne infectious diseases in the United States, Lyme disease is a potentially debilitating infection caused by bacteria transmitted through the bite of an infected tick to people and pets. If caught early, most cases of Lyme disease can be treated, but it is commonly misdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and unreliable diagnostic tests. If not treated promptly, Lyme may progress to a debilitating stage becoming difficult, or impossible, to cure. The CDC has reported that about 300,000 people are diagnosed with the disease each year.

NO DOUBT, ROBERT PLANT & SNOOP DOGG HELP PUT BOTTLEROCK ON THE MAP WITH A SELLOUT YEAR AND GOOD TIMES IN WINE COUNTRY... By Sason Bishope Parry

O

n May 28, 29 & 30th the Napa Valley Expo hosted the 3rd annual BottleRock festival showcasing more than 70 bands over three days. The festival exhibits a wide spectrum of musical genres, including rock, hip-hop, country, jazz and electronica, and caters to both young and old. After a rough 1st year in 2013, the music, wine and culinary extravaganza seemed dead when original promoters faced millions in losses. Two years later, a new production outfit and a sold out attendance drawing close to 100,000, the festival looks like it has got new life and a great concept that brings together everything that Napa Valley offers. “This is Napa, and that means food, wine, weather and now we’re bringing in the music – we want to have something for everyone,” said David Graham of Latitude 38 Entertainment, the festival’s producer. Musical highlights over the three days included Day 1 performances by rockers Cage the Elephant that showed lead singer, Mathew Shultz, crowd surfing across a sea of fans. Hip-hop greats Public Enemy, which included original members Chuck D and Flavor Fav, played all their classics. The night ended with Imagine Dragons playing one of their best sets on the Intel stage while Michael Franti & Spearhead shared his good vibes on the Jams Cellar stage. Day 2 brought stellar performances by Alaska’s

Portugal, The Man, ZZ Ward and Electronic dance rockers Capital Cities. The night, however, belonged to the legendary Robert Plant who delivered a fiery performance of solo’s as well as classics like “Whole Lotta Love” and “Black Dog,” reminding fans of the magnitude of Led Zeppelin. Music highlights for Day 3 belonged to AWOLNATION who delivered arguably the most intense set of the festival, hip-hop hero Snoop Dogg who brought his charismatic swag and of course headliners No Doubt, as Gwen Stefani battled microphone and video issues to guide fans through an incredible set. Beyond the music, fans were treated to Napa Valley wine culture with lots of local wineries on hand. It was clear that food also played a big part in the festival with lots of great options. The Williams-Sonoma culinary stage was a highlight, showcasing a mash-up of top chefs cooking with music artists that included Snoop Dogg rolling sushi with Chef Morimoto and Public Enemies’ Flavor Flav frying up chicken & waffles with Chef Voltaggio. All in all, BottleRock seemed like it was well organized and there was a good feeling amongst the crowd that they were all part of a new festival experience that showcased everything that is special to Napa Valley’s culture. Hats off to Latitude 38 and very excited to see what’s in store for the 2016 edition, as dates and tickets have already been announced.
