SUSTAINABILITY
UMASAN`S innovative fabrics SELECTED QUALITY – ORGANIC & VEGAN FABRIC STRATEGY Umasan’s strategy of using innovated fabrics includes the following: Switching from conventional to vegan and organic fabrics with certified use of organic cotton and other organic yarn – choosing innovative new protein fabric properties. Creating methods to focus on a healthy, safety and environmental production. by Ava Pivot
CHOOSING QUALITY – ORGANIC & VEGAN FABRIC STRATEGY UMASAN uses exclusive vegan fabrics that reconsider animal rights, as well as selected natural technology yarns that allow increasingly high levels of aesthetic, ergonomic and ecological performance. Soy, Tencel and Bamboo are innovative, extraordinary organic and healthy yarn deriving from vegan fibers that stimulate blood circulation, which is considered to be a natural antibacterial agent, and allow the skin to breathe. Protein yarn is made out of pure soya protein/aminoacidemia, which is ecofriendly and friendly to UMASANS silky skin; this new and revolutionary “vegetable cashmere” fiber is the outcome of a perfect combination between technology and pure nature. Natural high lifestyle uses distinctive natural resources including Bamboo, Hemp, Tencel, organic cotton by making supremely soft and comfortable apparel and accessories. UMASANS fabrics are 100% sourced from European productions and mills. Therefore, UMASAN is able to follow the strict European environmental guidelines for sustainability and the complete environmental impact reduction. UMASAN is very dedicated in avoiding the use of animal products or yarns, as well as chemical man-made fibers. It is their mission to educate the consumer and create a new standard of consciousness.

Protein fibers… Protein fibers are the perfect combination of Science and Technology! Protein fiber is an eco-friendly fiber made from tofu manufacturing waste. The fiber is made entirely of soy protein (which is a by-product from the manufacture of tofu.) They are very soft yet durable and easy to take care of - the hand feel is similar to silk or cashmere, and perfect for the need of our modern customers. The fibers breathe, are anti-pilling, and have a natural anti-bacterial function; they are hypoallergenic and infused with 18 important amino acids that promote the human cell renewal! Cotton…
Seacell...
This is one of the oldest and most natural fibers. Due to its many positive traits, it has been one of the most important fibers within fashion and other industries. We are dedicated to serve the most environmental and sustainable use of cotton, and we are continuously keeping up with the latest ecological developments.
This is a fabric made out of lyocell (a 100% wood pulp fiber) and seaweed. The assumption is that your skin will absorb nutrients from seaweed, a plant that is quite rich in mineral and vitamin. From what one can gather, Seacell incorporates 5% seaweed content. The fabric was devised in Germany, and has been certified by the European “ECO LABEL”, which promotes green products. The porous and open structure of Seacell fibers “breath” well and absorb what your skin expels to promote an all over wellbeing.
Lenzing Micro Modal... Micro Modal is a 100% biodegradable fabric made from the spun reconstituted cellulose of beach trees. This fabric is more bio-based than natural. Lenzing fibers are extracted from plants, which convert carbon dioxide and water into wood and pure oxygen through photosynthesis. In addition, the closed loop mechanisms of plants play an important role. Lenzing Modal derives from nature and returns to nature. Modal fabrics are very soft and smooth with the ability to absorb up to 50% more water than cotton. Fabric made from modal drape well and do not pile like cotton. It dyes like cotton and is color-fast when washed in warm water. Modal fabrics resist fading, shrinking and the buildup of hard water mineral deposits even after repeated washing. Pure modal fabric looks its best when ironed after washing, while blended modal fabrics are more wrinkle resistant. Due to modal’s smooth soft qualities, it is used extensively in bedding and sleepwear. Its tremendous absorbency also makes it ideal for the use for towels. Lenzing Tencel... It is the newest development by Lenzing within the vast range of cellular fibers. It has a soft finish, packs light and is made from cellulose (vegetable matter), or wood pulp. This pulp can be a mix of hardwood trees like oak and birch. It turns it into a natural fabric, which is noted for its durability and strength in addition to its eco-friendly manufacturing techniques. A life cycle analysis demonstrates the environmental friendliness of TENCEL compared to cotton, polyester and polypropylene. The study fully evaluates each fiber‘s environmental impact during the course of extraction, and concludes that cotton’s toxic impact on fresh water and soil is monstrous in comparison to that of TENCEL.
Soy fiber... It is a fiber produced from soy that is vastly more ecofriendly than most fiber used to produce fabric on a large commercial scale in use today. Soy fiber is produced from conventionally grown soy as well as from greener, organically grown soy. The raw material for this fiber is available as a byproduct of large-scale food production and is a renewable, sustainable resource. Soy fiber is produced with dregs leftovers from the production of soymilk, oil and tofu. Fabric produced from this fiber has a luxurious silky luster, and fantastic drape. It offers the durability and absorbency of cotton, yet has superior moisture wicking properties and breathes well. The wearability and feel of soy fabric has been compared to that of cashmere. The relative ease of care for this fabric, which is machine wash and air dry, also adds to its desirability. Bamboo... Bamboo, a perennial grass, absorbs greenhouse gasses and produces large quantities of oxygen. This plant regenerates very rapidly. The variety used in the production of fabric can reach heights of seventy-five feet in sixty days. Bamboo will thrive without the use of pesticides or fertilizers, and its roots help stabilize soil and reduce erosion. These qualities make bamboo an environmentally friendly source of fiber for the production of fabric. Eco-friendly fabric made from bamboo fiber offers consumers a fabric choice that is green and sustainable. Bamboo fabric is strong, lightweight and has excellent moisture wicking properties. Its ability to absorb three times its weight in water is vastly superior to that of cotton. This fabric is very soft to the touch with a silky sheen and exhibit’s antibacterial properties. It is cool, breathes well and is anti-static. Bamboo fabric is shown to block 98% of harmful UV radiation. For these reasons, it is often worn close to the skin and is an excellent choice for active wear.

FELIX RÄHMER @KULT MODELS
My modeling career started off very quickly. Right after my O-level graduation, I started working at Hollister in Berlin, Germany. There, I was surrounded by models who tried to talk me into applying at a model agency, something I had never even considered doing - until model scouts started contacting me through Facebook. That was when I thought, why not see where this may lead to; after all I had nothing to lose. I connected with one trustworthy scout who believed in me and had planned a winning strategy for my career, which was my debut as a model at the Elite modeling contest in Munich in 2012.
Amazingly, I was able to skip the pre-labs, got into the semi - final right away, and ended up winning the whole contest. I can’t even describe the feeling, when I realized what had just happened. I signed a contract at Kult Models, one of the biggest agencies in Germany and called off all other previous applications with other agencies. Ever since then, I have been traveling a lot for my model jobs, and was blessed to meet a lot of amazing people. I don’t regret making these steps at all, also because I have learned a lot about myself. All in all, it has been an incredible journey so far. I’m truly grateful to have parents and close friends who are supporting me unconditionally. Especially at the beginning, when I had to invest a lot more time and effort to get things started and my time with them suffered, their support helped me to stay focus and grounded.

POLITICALLY CORRECT
Dressing for Love
As Valentine‘s Day is this month, it is crucial to keep in mind that it is not appropriate to lower your moral standards of dress. If one “taken”, it is even more crucial that a young lady keep in mind that she must be respectable always—especially in moments when others might edge toward a more desperate or provocative form of dressing. When dressing for a special date or evening, it‘s quite possible to dress with a sexy flair while maintaining the decorum of dress. The unspoken rule of dress is that looking sexy should seem to be an accident and not intentional. With the flux and change of time, wearing things that are much fitted is perfectly acceptable. Showing cleavage is appropriate in a mild form, and short dresses and skirts can be acceptable. As the times are changing, so must the political correctness with which we approach dress. Currently, I think the majority of a lady‘s palms should be on a ladies dress or skirt when her arms are down at her

side. This is very short dress length, so please keep in mind variations in arm length. It seems silly to even mention, but undergarments must be worn. Interestingly, I have found that there is very little etiquette written about footwear. For example, there are moments when open-toed or closed-toed footwear is more appropriate. And sandals are often not acceptable. However, heel height is not mentioned and is often regarded as completely up to the wearer. I am not condoning five-inch heels before 5 p.m., but for the evening it is perfectly acceptable to wear heels as high as one can find. I would expect whispers about the type of women wearing such high heels, but that is simply type casting and has no reflection on political correctness or fashion etiquette. I hope everyone has a Valentine´s Day filled with romance!
If one is concerned about their cleavage and shoulders being too exposed, a nice fur bolero could be the perfect solution. Nothing says romance like fur. Ellie Tahari. Found at Saks.com

MONTHLY FASHION COLUMN
ABLY SPEAKING
by Joyce Darkoh
It is the beginning of 2016, and the most joyful season for all fashionistas and fashionistos has started again. Yes, fashion week worldwide is full in effect, and beautiful runway images are flooding the internet and social media channels. For me, the beginning of each season is the ultimate satisfaction simply because it kicks off with all men’s shows, LMC (London Men’s Collection) followed by Pitti Uomo in Florence, then Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Milan, London and Paris. Last season, New York launched its first Men’s Fashion Week, a move that was critically viewed by many but turned out to be more acknowledged by the media and fashion world than expected. Having my own label launched during New York Fashion Week two years ago, I remember how tough it was finding an ideal slot for the show because so many brands were scheduled to show at the same time. The last thing we wanted to risk was showing offsite and parallel with a label that had the same media and client focus as we did. This issue appears to be resolved now, and looking at the NYFW Men’s schedule, there seems to be enough time to visit multiple shows by putting together a little schedule in advance. My personal concern now is, can NYFW Men’s keep up with the other four locations as far as content and outreach is concerned? There is no doubt that the former NYFW was ruled by women designers, let it be Donna Karan, Diane von Fuerstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, and the list goes on. But, really, only a handful of menswear designers stuck out, such as Ralph Lauren, Thom Browne and Tommy Hilfiger. It doesn’t mean that there are no great US menswear designers, because we know there are; they just moved their shows to Milan, Paris or London. And after Mercedes Benz, the sponsor of all other major fashion week shows, decided to pull out of New York last year I cannot help but sometimes question the actual importance and the efficiency for
64
menswear brands to show at NYFW. Will it be able to gain significance, now that John Varvatos returned his show to NY, and buyers are now able to purchase merchandise within buying time? (In the past, retail buyers had already finished their purchases long before the shows because of the late schedule.) Nevertheless, and after showing there three times, I can say that these New York catwalks still have this sort of “if you can make it there” touch; and maybe, from an international marketing point of view, this might not be such a bad move for new brands to begin with. As a matter of fact, NYFW has an incredible reputation in European countries. And yes, we also decided to give this new concept another shot. We are are currently working on our fourth NYFW show for summer, this time surrounded by fellow menswear brands. And of course, you will hear it first in here. Until then, Stay FSHNable Joyce

BLOGGER INTERVIEW MEET
MATTHIAS GEERTS Who is Matthias Geerts? If you are active on social media then you have definitely seen images of this young, smart dressing guy or heard of his blog MattStyle.com. He is one of Europe’s most successful bloggers with a steadily rising followers. Located in Antwerp, Belgium, Matthias has been sharing his stylish looks with anyone who is looking for new styling inspirations or who simply enjoys a nice social media feed filled with the latest fashion trends and brands. According to Matthias, “the clothes you wear are a resemblance of who you are and he thinks people will show more attention if you’re wearing something cool or sophisticated. It’s not the goal to attract attention but to give people a good mood with the way you look.”
FSHN had the pleasure to sit down with Matthias and do this interesting interview. by Joyce Darkoh
FSHN: You are one of the most successful menswear bloggers in Europe at a very young age. What encouraged you to start your blog? MG: I started blogging as an online outlet to share my passion for fashion. At first, I was just sharing what I was wearing on Instagram and Lookbook. I showed which trends I loved and which I didn’t. I was also following quite a few other blogs and I thought, “I can also do this.” Furthermore, at that time there weren’t that many other male fashion bloggers. I’m blogging affordable fashion available for everyone and I try to help people to decide what to wear when they wake up in the morning or what to wear to certain occasions. FSHN: You have reached a large crowd of followers on Instagram and Facebook. Who are your average followers? MG: My followers are quite heterogeneous. I have small girls that are fans of my looks but I also have older men that appreciate what I do; however I think my followers are mainly young men like myself who are self-conscious and looking for inspiration about fashion and lifestyle. FSHN: Can you describe your personal style? GM: Like my followers my style is versatile. Furthermore, this is also what I love about fashion. You can easily switch between styles and give a completely different message to the people. Nevertheless, I do have a particular style that I’m most known for and that is a casual dapper style that is affordable and wearable to many occasions.
76
FSHN: There has been a drastic change among men and fashion in the last few years. What are your thoughts on this? MG: Over the last years men have become more selfconscious and many are inspired by social media or just by what they see on their smart phones. There are so many new ways to get stimulated; however, sometimes with all this information it becomes a maze and that is how people look at other people’s pages to get it right. I believe fashion is moving faster and faster because brands want to be trending online as much as you can. FSHN: Why our blog also includes travelling and lifestyle. Which one of your travels has been the most impressive one for you so far? MG: I have to say that it was my last trip to Thailand and Cambodia. I spent 3 weeks over there and it was a holiday that included everything, adventure, culture, luxury and parties. I was also completely blown away by the hospitality of the people, and the landscape was a true resemblance of paradise! I strongly recommend going there and exploring the Angkor Wat temples or enjoying some luxury on one of the islands of Thailand. FSHN: What inspires you on what to wear or blog about next? MG: At the moment the men’s fashion weeks are going on and I’ve already seen so many new trends and ideas. During fashion week I get an explosion of new ideas of what to wear, I try to download these ideas as much as I can in my mind or write them down on my iPhone. When the fashion weeks are over I tend to read fashion magazines or just look on social media to see what I like.

FSHN: Who is Matthias Geerts when the cameras are off? What do you do in your spare time. MG: I guess like every young man, I enjoy spending quality time with my friends, hanging out with them and going out clubbing. I also love going to the gym with my gym buddies; this is where I let off some steam. If I just want to have some me-time I love binge-watching Netflix with some comfort food along the side. FSHN: Lately, a lot of young guys are starting their own menswear blog with more or less success. What is your recommendation and advice for them? GM: Do something you love. When you write about something with passion it will show in your articles. Also, try to do something original; with so many blogs popping up every day and with many people having the same sponsors, the blogosphere is becoming somewhat saturated with the same articles. Try to look at it from a different angle. FSHN: What are your next steps and goals? MG: Currently we are working hard to become an online platform rather than a regular blog. We want to attract new readers and want more people to find some usefulness to our articles. Recently we’ve expanded our blog with a Girl’s Corner, which my sister is in charge off and soon we will also launch a Gentlemen’s Corner to help people pull off a nice sartorial look.
78
FSHN: What else do you want our readers to know about you? MG: I enjoy meeting new people and I love pizza! If someone wants to take me out to eat pizza they can always contact me.

MONTHLY MENSWEAR
Men and Fashion:
the revolutionary change Menswear is the new womenswear. At least according to Toby Bateman, buyer at Mr. Porter, who predicts rising investments and profitable sales within the menswear industry. But, how has fashion consciousness increased among men? And how much do they invest in looking “alright,” actually? Here is what Brock O’Hurn, internet star and model/actor, told us. by Joyce Darkoh
FSHN: How important is fashion / “dress to impress” to you? BH: It’s very important. Working in a field where fashion is your job or being in the public eye, I believe it is essential to look your best when and wherever you can. And there’s nothing better than knowing you look great in an outfit you love! FSHN: Describe your favorite outfit. BH: Depends on the occasion. I am a HUGE fan of a well tailored suit. As far as everyday wear, I like casual, but with a more European style. Layers, boots and great jewelry!
80
FSHN: How much money do you spend on clothes per month in average? BH: Depends on the month! Haha. If I have to pick up a suit or specific clothes the terms change! It’s all relative. Brock O’Hurn Los Angeles, CA

DESIGNER DREAMS “As a decorator most of my current dreams are concerned with ordering fabrics. I have this terrible dream about a misunderstanding in the meters of fabric coming in from overseas. What I am sent is incorrect; the amounts and the color-ways are wrong. Communicating is a problem. I am not able to be understood. I’ll be saying, ‘That is not at all what I said,’ or ‘that is not right at all,’ and it is very frustrating for me. Beyond the obvious, what is the meaning of these dreams? Susan Gutfreund, Manhattan, New York
THE INTERPRETATION
Susan’s work related dreams are not dissimilar from the generic “actor’s nightmare” in that they both reveal performance anxiety. Yet, on a deeper level, one understands that a dream is a design of the interior. In this view, the wrong color-way may reveal anxieties over self-presentation; the amount of fabric may signify the essence of the personality as perceived as either falling short of the mark or wildly exceeding expectations. As such, the dreams are critiques that keep the dreamer in check..
82
by Lauren Lawrence
In another view, attention to detail is a must; the love of perfection is realized. Embroiled in the fabric of life, the dreamer will go to great lengths to achieve her desires: Living is measured out in meters. Above all else is the importance of being understood. When the desire for self-expression is strong, the wish to voice issues is prioritized. If communication falters, so does personal fulfillment. In true perfectionist fashion, there is the rueful recognition that mistakes happen when dealing with someone other than themselves.

Introducing Jordan Clarkson
Influencer Athlete Trendsetter From athlete to trendsetter, Jordan Clarkson is making his mark in the entertainment industry both on and off the court. This 6’5” NBA Rising Star is definitely one to watch in 2016. Born in Tampa, Florida, and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Clarkson excelled on the basketball court all throughout high school – so much so that in November 2009, he officially signed a National Letter of Intent to play college basketball at the University of Tulsa. After playing for two seasons at the University of Tulsa he transferred to the University of
Missouri. He ultimately decided to forgo his senior year of college to enter the 2014 NBA Draft – a move that paid off when he was selected by the Washington Wizards. However, on draft night he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to sit down with Clarkson in LA to discuss everything from how he prepares for a big game to what he hopes to accomplish in the future, which includes starting his own fashion brand.
There is no doubt that Clarkson has a bright and promising future ahead of him. As a guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, Clarkson has accomplished a lot in such a short amount of time. During the 201415 season he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team, which was also his first year with the Los Angeles Lakers. Considering the fact that it requires a lot of physical and mental preparation going into each game, Clarkson prefers to go in with a clear head. “I just try to clear my mind and go to a different place and focus on what the task is at hand,” said Clarkson.

While Clarkson credits Steve Nash as a mentor who’s inspired him the most in his career, he also credits his father as his biggest inspiration. “My dad is definitely my biggest inspiration because he’s been through a lot,” said Clarkson.
Clarkson, whom certainly has a lot to be thankful for, had a tough time picking his biggest highlight from 2015. “It would probably have to be going to the Philippines and spending a little bit of time over there getting to know my culture. One other major highlight would have to be all of my success in the NBA,” said Clarkson. With all of his recent success in the NBA, it was announced that Clarkson would be participating in All-Star Weekend 2016 in Toronto during mid-February.
When he is not too busy preparing for his next big game, Clarkson enjoys watching movies and playing video games, such as “Call of Duty,” in his spare time – just like every other 23-year-old male.

THE PASSION ISSUE 2016
CR: What was going through your head after you played in your first professional game with the LA Lakers? JC: I was so nervous, but it was such a relief that I got my first one under my belt. All of the games are really the same, but the first one is always nerveracking. CR: What do you hope to accomplish on the court in the second part of the season? JC: I just plan to grow with my teammates. We are such a young team and I don’t think a lot of people recognize that. It’s going to take time for us to gel and create chemistry. CR: What is one of your favorite memories that you’ve shared with your teammates off of the court? JC: We went to Hawaii for preseason and we were around each other for about two weeks straight. We had a good time out there with each other. We practiced most of the day but we got to enjoy it a little bit, we
didn’t get to do too much because we were in training but it was a cool team bonding experience. CR: When you’re not too busy training, what do you like to do in your off time? JC: I like to relax, hang out with my friends, play video games, and watch movies. I also like to just drive around LA to view the city. CR: How would you describe your style? JC: I would say different and unique. I try to do some stuff that people don’t usually think of doing. CR: What are some of your favorite brands? JC: Saint Laurent, Neil Barrett , Givenchy, Fear of God, and Alexander Wang. CR: If you could start your own fashion brand, what type of things would you include? JC: I feel like my fashion brand would be really urban, hoodies,
bombers, joggers…stuff like that. Leave the sneakers to the big companies. CR: What was the last movie that you watched for pleasure? JC: The Revenant. I thought that it was really good, it was artistic and it was different, I liked it a lot. CR: If a movie were to be made about your life, whom would you want to play you? JC: Will Smith, or his son, Jaden. CR: I know that you’re a huge fan of movies, would you ever consider pursuing a career in acting? JC: I might make a few cameos in my off time, you never know, so be on the lookout! I might just be in the next Marvel movie or something crazy. CR: What is something that our readers would be surprised to learn about you? JC: I like art. I enjoy going to gallerias to look at art.

For a long-lasting outcome, we always start with a primer first. My personal favorite is the creamy eye shadow primer from Shu Uemura. The most important part of creating luscious eyelashes is forming a good brow. It will enhance your look and open up your eyes. Start by gently brushing through your eyelashes with the MAC 204 Lash Brush. Now you are ready to curl your eyelashes. My favorite eyelash curler is from Shu Uemura as well. I recommend holding the curler for about 10 seconds. After you finish curling, the next step is to work on beautifully blending your eyeshadow. I love the Chanel LES 4 OMBRES because of it’s the gorgeous color palettes. For a more intense look, you can also apply the powders wet, which brings out the rich color pigments more intensely.
The best brushes are by MAC cosmetics: 239 Eye Shader Brush Works well with wet products. 221 Mini Tapered Blending Brush Great for the crease and blending. 217 Blending Brush & 219 Pencil Brush Both are good for the upper lash line, lower lids and under the eye. For the ultimate finish, apply mascara and you are done. My favorite one is Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara, which gives you a striking dramatic look.
Love, Y vi
One of the secrets to perfect eye make-up is using good quality brushes and blending, blending, blending! In my opinion, makeup is all about blending. It is so important because it can make a big difference in the final outcome.

Replete is abundance for us. In the area of natural living, it has come to my attention just how very much we are affected by exposure to unnatural and genetically modified foods and products. This must become a focus of our global awareness. by Elisabeth Thieriot
Today, some go as far as to say this has become a form of chemical warfare. As we begin to recognize that what enters our body directly impacts and causes changes in our system, it’s functions, reproduction, and overall wellness, we can make direct connections to how genetically modified foods impair logical thinking. They disrupt natural processes so much that even our decision-making is not of sound mind. I recently attended an international conference in Turkey on this subject, and sat in a talk by Princess Basmah of Saudi Arabia, where she spoke about how we are being genetically altered through consuming GMO non-intelligent (not natural) foods. She is indeed right. Every plant contains bio-chemical intelligence to perform assigned actions by the virtue of its existence. This is the foundation of nutrients from food and medicine, they started in the natural foods and healing herbs of this world. There is a vital difference between these natural sources and synthetic substances that are artificially altering the chemical structure of that plant. The difference is the presence of natural functioning intelligence that plants have as part of their natural relationship with the world. We need that natural intelligence for us to fully interact on a highly functioning level with plant products, foods, herbs, and tinctures,
anything that is derived from a plant source. We are part of nature in our own right and the connectivity between us and the plants and foods that we interact with is necessary for our health to thrive. Scientists have been spent years trying to understand the puzzle of why they are not getting the same results from synthetic substances, since under the microscope they look identical to naturally occurring substances, yet they do not perform as the natural ones do. Remember the attempted manufacturing of synthetic marijuana for medical use? It was causing multiple severe side effects, things they could not explain. However the medical use of natural cannabis plants do not exhibit these same side effects. Every plant has its’ purpose in life, just as we do. They contain the intelligence of functions that include healing, cell building, oxygen creation, regenerative function, nutrients and more. The knowledge and understanding of nature and our connectivity with it, is the place from which Replete was created. We focus on restoration, providing resilience and true balance. The foundation of our approach is the natural intelligence of plants, combining herbs in order to build bridges between healing and our daily demands on energy from living.

It is essential for skincare products to contain NO toxic preservatives or fillers, and it IS possible. The absence of toxic preservatives and fillers eliminates stresses on the skin so that it stops trying to defend itself from the product itself, and puts the focus on assimilating the nutrients that are needed to nurture the skin. The result is that skin that is delivered only what it needs - will function as a living, thriving organ, allowing the absorption of nutrients easily. With the combined intelligence of natural resources that support our body, our skin interacts with the delivery of these nutrients as it is meant to, converting, breathing, detoxifying and holding strongly to its youthful vitality and vibrancy. When we look at aging, it comes down to one vital factor. Aging comes from absence of nutrients. Running out of supplies to repair and rebuild skin cells. This is why nutrient only skincare is far more effective. Staying youthful comes from an abundance of naturally occurring nutrient and in turn creates the younger rested more resilient skin we all want.

FEATURED ACTOR
Johnny Whitworth by Olivia Soto Johnny Whitworth has something different up his sleeve for us, ladies and gentlemen. Recognized for his classic role in Empire Records alongside Liv Tyler, plus a handful of mysterious characters portrayed in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Limitless, and Blindspot, Johnny embraces a side of him we haven’t seen in his new critically-acclaimed movie Bad Hurt. Whitworth’s fresh new film, which has already received an award from the Sunscreen Film Festival West for best narrative feature, is about your typical lower class family but with a little more oomph that pulls at your heart strings. Playing a Gulf War veteran who suffers from PTSD and struggling with addiction, Whitworth molds into his character Kent Kendall.Johnny shared how he prepped for his unfamiliar role in the film that is about a true story. “I figured Kent was an extremely uncomfortable human being, both before the war and definitely after. Some of the things I did to identify with him were; limit my food intake, spend an exorbitant amount of time by myself - isolated in my room at the Holiday Inn express in Staten Island,” says Whitworth.

THE PASSION ISSUE 2016
“However, ultimately, it was the breath that writer/director, Mark Kemble, put into his brother’s voice. The most crucial tool in my interpretation of Kent were the stories that Mark told me; the impressions he’d do.” Of course, within Kent, Johnny found a new layer of himself he hasn’t showed his viewers, but there was a down side to the raw PTSD man. “Embarrassed to say, I picked up smoking, living in Kent’s world,” admits the actor. “He was a chain smoker, and I couldn’t not really smoke. So after 5 years free from a 19-year habit, I found myself inhaling again. I know it sounds absurd, but his character demanded authenticity. Now I am challenged to quit smoking once again.” The movie was produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, who is known for her involvement with producing Wolf of Wall Street. In 2014, Koskoff scored herself an Oscar nom for her production. “It was definitely an advantage,” says Johnny about having Emma on board of Bad Hurt. “Having a producer of that caliber on what was intended to be a ‘passion-project’ is unheard of. It went from something we all HAD to do, to something people HAD to see. We started winning awards starting at Tribeca and didn’t stop. Important people jumped on board to make sure it was seen. It’s a true Cinderella tale. Emma was inspired.” The plot of the story chronicles the obstacles that Whitworth’s character’s family face, with a surprise bomb makes their already difficult lives more stressful. With two adult kids with disabilities, the family sticks together no matter what. Johnny shared what he remembers about his own childhood, considering Kent’s brother is seen constantly checking up on him and Johnny has a few brothers of his own.
“Most of my brothers are much older than I - didn’t spend much time with them. However, my little brother, Danny, has saved my ass, and had his ass saved by me, multiple times. My love and respect for him is incomprehensible.” Not that different from the brothers in Bad Hurt, afterall! “Kent’s sister played by, Iris Gilad is certainly worth mentioning,” credits Whitworth. “She was in the play version of the film and blows me away as the mentally challenged DeeDee Kendall. She actually won an Ovation nomination for her role in the play - no small thing.” A recent role we have seen Johnny in, but can clearly recognize, is NBC’s television series Blindspot. The show follows a team of FBI agents who are struggling to discover why a girl covered in tattoos was left in the middle of Times Square, and strangely she doesn’t remember anything before then. Every tattoo has a clue and it’s up to the agents to unravel the meaning of each one. Playing “Ruggedly Handsome Man” (viewers have yet to find out his actual name, but hey if the shoe fits, am I right ladies?), Whitworth pops up in Jane Doe’s memories every once and a while making him seem extra ambiguous. Warning: if you begin watching, you will find yourself binge watching the series and the next moment it will be two in the morning. “The intrigue keeps me on edge. Still waiting to find out my character’s name,” says the actor. “I can’t wait for the audience, myself included, to get some answers: Who am I, a bad guy, is [Jane Doe]? The level of secrecy on this show is unlike any other. I couldn’t possibly slip because no one knows ANYTHING, so yes, pins and needles.” We have seen a particular sequence of routine in Johnny’s roles, which ooze mystery, sometimes scary and rebellious that does make his role in his new movie unexpected. “I find them to be the most interesting and layered characters,” comments Whitworth.
FSHN | 143
FSHN MAGAZINE
“Playing a good guy, who for whatever reason, does something bad is interesting, but playing a ‘bad guy’ who does something ‘good’ - if done right is my kind of character.. Getting the audience to root for the bad guy, to expose a moment of humanity, that’s a challenge.”
Johnny shared with us his dream “bad guy” to play, which doesn’t seem as a surprise at all. Hint: a ruggedly handsome man. “I’d love to play the “notorious outlaw” Snake Plissken from ‘Escape from New York’. Talk about your bad guy doing the right thing. That’d be fun.” The resemblance is actually uncanny that we might have already assumed Whitworth was the actor himself. After Bad Hurt, watch for Johnny is his next film, Finding Her, that just wrapped up.
144
“[It’s] another story based on true events about a young girl who goes missing from the Brooklyn projects and the frustrating lack of effort by the NYPD to find her. I play a investigative journalist assigned to look into the case and quickly become a part of the story.” While shooting in New York, the actor had some memorable moments while filming and one that seemed awfully familiar, like déjà vu. “Before we started shooting ‘Finding Her’, the writer/ director, Vlad Feier, took me on a five-hour walking tour of the city through the eyes of our story,” shares Johnny. “As the day ended, a man covered in blood stumbled over - clearly in need of help. Everyone ignored him. We flagged down an officer who reluctantly agreed to look into it. We walked about 75 feet but turned around to see the cop doing nothing, so we had an ambulance called. Now, there’s some sickening irony for you. To be continued…” The cast of Bad Hurt includes Michael Harney (Orange is the New Black) who plays his father, Karen Allen (Indiana Jones, etc) who plays his mother, Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) who plays his brother and Iris Gilad, an Ovation-Award nominated actress in which who plays his sister. Bad Hurt is set to release on February 12, 2016. Make sure to find a theater near your area that will be airing the film to witness the family drama and Johnny’s most epic role! FASHION WEEK
NYFW Men’s FW16
in retrospect This year’s NYFW Men’s was definitely special, and full of unexpected features. It appeared as if each brand took advantage of the second season of stand - alone menswear Fashion Week to stand out. Timo Weiland, John Elliott, Max’N Chester, Public School, John Varvatos, Calvin Klein, Joseph Abboud, Todd Snyder, Theory, and Billy Reid are just a few designers and brands that took the runway by storm. Many collection consisted of casual looks with baggy pants and tops, often shown in multiple layers, which reminded of gym wear going street-chic. Dominant colors were black, different shades of grey, and earthtones combined with the trend color for FW16, a dark, warm burgundy. While designers like Joseph Abboud, Perry Ellis, and Suit Supply leaned towards traditional and contemporary suitwear, others stood out by showing a lot shine and shimmer (Calvin Klein), or simply showing a six look collection (Duckie Brown). Two presentations worth mentioning were Nick Graham, who took his invitees into the tree, literally, by sticking knobws, plants and stuffed animals on its models; and John Elliott, who turned jazz inspired presentation into a homage to the era Miles Davis. Check out our next issue of FSHN for a detailed recap of NYFW Men’s by blogger and networker Dat Hoang including exclusive behind the scene images. by Joyce Darkoh

FEATURED TALENT
Josie Ho Josie Ho is a triple threat trendsetter from Hong Kong. As an actress, musician, and film producer, Josie Ho does it all. Josie is known for being a trendsetter in Asia and was among Forbes 20 Most Intriguing Billionaire Heiresses. She first began her career in the early 1990’s and has thrived ever since.
Josie is In the Room. It is a sexy drama from awardwinning Singaporean director Eric Khoo. The film is about love, life and lust and is an array of independent stories that all take place in the same hotel room. The twist is that each story takes place decades apart spanning from the 1940’s wto the 1990’s.
Josie is a popular musician who first got started when she performed in the Macau beauty pageant when she was younger. She was introduced to Virgin Records Hong Kong and the rest all fell into place. Her sister, Pansy, helped give her the support she needed to pursue music as a career. Now Josie has a band called Josie and the Uni Boys. Her music in inspired by rock & roll and Johnny Depp; Josie even named a single after him. She loves being a part of a band and rocking out together and sharing a stage. Josie’s advice to those interested in music is, “pursue it if you love it.”
Her other new movie, Full Strike, is a comedy that first premiered in Hong Kong over the summer. The film is a sports comedy about competitive badminton, so knowing how to play was a must. Josie had experience with badminton because she won the Champion of Ontario in the female doubles competition when she was in high school. She also trained with badminton coach Ling Yuen Ting prior to filming. The role was one of Josie’s favorite characters to date. Josie’s character, Beast Ng, is a 7 year reigning champ that gets banned from the sport for her bad temper. Josie loves both acting and producing because they both fulfill something different for her. Her small film production company, 852 Films, produced Full Strike.
Back in August 2015, Josie and the Uni Boys performed at the Metro Radio Guoyuli Awards and received numerous awards. Josie dressed up as a pirate and performed her single Johnny Depp. Josie and the Uni Boys also won Best Asian Rock Band and Album of the Year for The Electrifying Supernatural Lady Land. Her awards showed that hard work pays off and she felt honored to be recognized. Josie also acts and produces and has been in more than 30 films. Her favorite types of films are fun, charming ones with twisted characters. The most difficult thing about acting for her is thinking from someone else’s point of view. One upcoming film for

On top of being a triple threat, Josie was bestowed as Lady Josephine by Prince Stephan of Montenegro while in Italy during the summer. She received the honor because of her friend’s recommendation and it took place during a knighting ceremony. Josie couldn’t believe it happened and was elated to be there. Many of her friends and family also had the chance to stay in a beautiful villa in Italy. She met many interesting people during the experience and will remember to always be a kind person.

ML: When did you first get involved with music? I first got involved in music when I was given the chance to perform for the Macau beauty pageant when I was younger. A friend of mine saw my performance and introduced me to Virgin Records Hong Kong. It all started from there. My sister Pansy is actually who encouraged my singing though. I never imagined it as a “real” career though until I received that support. ML: What influences or inspires your music? JH: Rock & Roll heavily influences our sound. I would also say that Johnny Depp inspires my music. I did write a single name for him after all. ML: What is it like a being part of a band instead of working solo? JH: It’s more fun to jam together than alone! And I don’t mind sharing the stage. Collaboration is good! ML: What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing music as a career? JH: Pursue it if you love it. But it is nice to have a support system like family, friends and fans. Find something that inspires you and go with it. ML: What is your favorite thing about performing on stage? JH: My favorite part of this performance was definitely that I dressed up like a pirate as an homage to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies to perform my single titled ‘Johnny Depp’ which I composed. Yes, I am a crazy fan of his... ML: What was it like performing at the music awards? JH: One word: Hot. We were having some of the hottest weather in Hong Kong during that time. I probably should have reconsidered my heavy outfit, but the performance must go on. The audiences seemed to enjoy it. ML: How did it feel to win so many of the awards you were nominated for? JH: It’s such a great feeling to be honored. It shows that lots of hard work pays off. Also, I’m so thankful to the Metro Radio Station for recognizing us. ML: Did you do anything specific for this role? JH: Well...the movie is a really funny underdog sports comedy about competitive badminton, so knowing how to play was a must. Production had us train with badminton coach by the name of Ling Yuen Ting prior to filming. She was actually on the professional Hong Kong Team so we definitely learned from one of the best.
162
ML: How was it different from previous movies you’ve done? JH: Doing a sports-comedy is definitely different than all the others... ML: What was your favorite part about the film? JH: My role as ‘Beast Ng’ in “Full Strike” has been one of my favorite roles to date. She is just a ridiculous former 7-year-reigning-champion who gets banned from the sport because of her absurd temper. The humor comes out in her personality and playing with that was just one of my favorite parts. ML: Do you prefer acting or producing? Did you help produce at all on this film? JH: I do enjoy both as they each fulfill something different. I have a small film production company called 852 Films (http://852films.com/) which produced the film. ML: Why did a movie about badminton spark your interest? JH: I had suggested doing a badminton-focused movie to Derek Kwok and Henri Wong. They are both directors who I really admire who actually ended up directing “Full Strike” together. Both of them liked the idea, so they wrote a script with the badminton sport in mind and here we are! ML: Had you ever played badminton before? JH: I don’t like to brag, but I won the Champion of Ontario in the female doubles competition for badminton when I was in high school. So I kinda knew what I was doing... ML: What can you tell us about this film? JH: “In the Room” is a high concept, sexy drama from award-winning Singaporean director Eric Khoo who I had such a great time working with. Our crew was so wonderful as well. The movie is about love, life and lust is a tapestry of independent stories taking place in a single hotel room, each one decade apart set in different eras from the 1940’s to 1990’s. ML: What is your favorite type of film to act in? JH: My favorite types of films are the fun, charming ones --- especially the movies that sometimes have twisted characters. ML: What is the most difficult thing about acting? JH: The most difficult thing about acting for me is that I have to think from another’s point of view. It’s also the fun to meet with everybody and have the opportunity to interact with everyone while crafting a scene. Thank you to everyone who has accepted my acting!
THE PASSION ISSUE 2016
ML: Why did you receive this honor? JH: I’ve received this honor because of my friend’s recommendation. I thank him for doing so! What was that moment like?
ML: What emotions were running through your mind? JH: I almost couldn’t believe it was happening. I was just so elated to be there!
It was a very memorable moment. Many of my friends and family had the chance to be in a beautiful villa in Italy. We met many interesting people during this experience.
ML: Do you have any responsibilities now that you have been knighted? JH: I guess my responsibility is to be a kind person always :-)

ANDALUSIA …offers everything in nature that you can imagine. Rough cliffs, long beaches with sand as fine as snow, deep gorges with spectacular views, snow-crowned mountains ideal for winter sports, flat plains with olive trees as far as the eye can see, densely forested hills from fairy tale - and the list could go on. It‘s an incredible region.
Almost 800 years ago, Andalusia was under Arab, Berber and Islamic influence. The name Al-Andalus (“land of the Vandals”) which origins from this time, is still in everyone’s mouth today. It’s also the Spanish culture - the food, the architecture, the people, the music - and treasures what makes it worthwhile experiencing true Andalusian nature. Andalusia offers everything in nature that you can imagine . Rough cliffs, long beaches with sand as fine as snow, deep gorges with spectacular views, snowcrowned mountains ideal for winter sports, flat plains with olive trees as far as the eye can see, densely forested hills from fairy tale - and the list could go on. It’s an incredible region. Andalusia is a true gem especially for culturally interested visitors. Under mostly Arab emperors an interesting culture developed, which gained great knowledge of Greek and Roman antiquity, translated into Arabic language, and thus conserved it into the posterity now. Scholars from all over the world travelled to Al-Andalus to study the precious scriptures, and in turn translated them into Hebrew, Latin, and later also Spanish. A never-before-seen collaboration between Christians, Muslims and Jews made it pos-
sible for Al-Andalus to be seen as the scientific center of the world. But Arab Princes to the Crown of the poetry and architecture competed in the arts, as well. After Christian emporer, who had been pushed back in the North for so long, began the Reconquista (reconquest) and ended it in 1492, a lot of the culture of Al-Andalus was destroyed under the re Christianisation; and still, enough has survived until today to make a deeper insight into the history possible. The best approach to the local food is tasting everything that there is to offer. Just to discover the majority of the tapas variations would take weeks. In addition, there are good Sherry, countless fish dishes, ham and gazpacho. Most restaurants in Andalusia are situated on the sidewalk, as far as there is space, and they extremely inviting. Also, smaller, dark taverns often have surprisingly tasty offers. One must be experimental, here; just enter and look around, and if you favour the place then waive to the most sincere waiter and ask him to please send the menu. Vegetarians may have a somewhat hard time as ham or something from the sea is being served. But there will be help provides, as well because there are always enough vegetarian variations.

ARTIST INTERVIEW
image editor & post production operator
by Ava Pivot
180
FSHN: Ben, we truly appreciate you for doing this interview with us. Could you introduce yourself to our readers and tell them who you are and what you do? Ben: Cheers, so glad to see that you are interested in getting to know a bit more about my profession. I’m more than happy to tell you about my daily work, even though the word “work” may not be the right way to describe it. What once started out as a hobby and passion a while ago has now become my profession: I’m a free-lance image editor and post production operator here in Hamburg, Germany, specialized in fashion, beauty, celebrities and advertising.
acles with digital datas. Photographers send me the RAW copies and in return receive a completely developed and looked images.
FSHN: Wow! That sounds exciting. So, what does it mean in practically? Could you give us a few details so that anyone without any advanced knowledge in this field gets an idea of what you are doing? Ben: In the past, photos were developed through a chemical process of negatives. This procedure is now handled by editors like me, who can create little mir-
The next step is doing the actual retouch of the image with various image editing programs. It can range from removing impurity of the skin, making color adjustments, straightening out the fall of clothes or brightening teeth, and many more improvements. That is how you get the best results out if the initial RAW data.
Looked images means that once I receive the copies I have to figure out how the final image should look like, what mood and emotions it should arouse in its spectator. This determines the amount of contrast and structure I add to the structure of substance and material, and adjust lighting, shadow and colors. The outcome is a thoroughly structured image.
THE PASSION ISSUE 2016
FSHN: Your most important work tool is Photoshop. How long have you been using it and how did you manage to improve your skills to such perfection? Ben: I got introduced to Photoshop about twelve years ago during my training of becoming a media coordinator, where I mainly used it to optimize the images for printing. However, I found the whole concept of the tool so fascinating that I felt the urge to try out its full potential on images. But the big question was - how to get photo material for the purpose of practicing?Well, it bored down to me buying a camera, flashes and lots of accessories so I could study photography in all its details. I started taking pictures of family, friends and friends of friends, and searched for models in order to understand the different techniques of producing high quality images. I then retouched them with Photoshop, gained more knowledge and adopted my own techniques; all this next to my actual job at a marketing agency. I consider myself to be a self-taught individual that used many, many hours to study everything on photography and photo editing.
FSHN: How would you describe your personal style and how often do you have the opportunity to apply your own style to clients’ work, or do you usually receive instructions? Ben: My style is very natural, and even though I can adjust to the glossy and glamorous style of high glance magazines to where people look like dolls, I prefer mine to look rather natural than unreal. In other words, I once in a while allow a skin impurity or a facial hair here or there or a wrinkle that normally would be removed completely. My image looks are usually directed to analogue images: high in contrast, grainy and crispy. However, and of course, it always depends on the final use of the images. Lookbook productions often require a clear look, and specific guidelines are then provided by the clients. Needless to say that I do enjoy working with clients who let me freelance and apply my own style, and I am blessed to say that this is the case with a majority of my orders.
About two years ago, I reached the turning point, when editing my own images was not satisfying anymore. Therefore, I spontaneously moved to Hamburg to work as an assistant and post production operator for an international photographer, a job that gave me more insight in people and advertising photography. I then returned to photo editing in 2015, and have been self-employed in this field since then. photo: Frank P. Wartenberg

FSHN: Ben, you are constantly working on bringing images to perfection to where they reflect certain beauty ideals. Does this strive for perfection in the commercial industry increase your thirst for more perfection as well, or rather for naturalness? Ben: I would say both, simply because I have to be familiar with both fields; one reason why I constantly study new techniques and adjust my workflow to the requirements in the industry and its current and future trends. My goal is to process images to where they reflect todays and future beauty ideals without “covering” the model’s natural appearance; so, naturalness and perfection.
FSHN: What are some of the opportunities and new directions for someone who has a good foundation in photography and two-three years of intensive training in Photoshop? What has a high priority on your “still to do”- list? Ben: Anything is possible, really, starting from work in a marketing agency to developing complex automotive motives. The essence of it all is figuring out what you enjoy doing because it is reflected in the outcome simply because you are not supporting your own work. Being a good image editor enables you to work anywhere in the world, let’s you prepare data as a digital operator at photo productions, or be creative for advertising agencies in-house. One good advice – an internship with photographers or at image processing companies in your field of interest; you can learn a lot right there.

LOVE
Every Day is Valentine´s Day One of the most salient aspects of holidays is in how they mark time. It’s another birthday, another Halloween, another Christmas, another New Year’s Eve. Holidays remind us of the passage of time, and at the same time, give us a sense that time keeps returning. In other words, they remind us of the circular nature of time. We anticipate each of those days or nights, and in many cases, spend time in advance preparing for them, sometimes for weeks or even months, then celebrate them, photograph them, then later reflect upon them. It is this constant returning that in part gives holidays their special quality. It also means that the rest of the year we are not celebrating those holidays. Yet we sometimes yearn for the qualities of those holidays to last longer. What if every day was your birthday? What if Christmas (or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, whichever is your tradition) lasted all year? It might seem to be a silly notion, and perhaps it would rob the specialness from the actual holidays themselves. Could you imagine Halloween lasting all year long? I suppose in some cities in the US it does last all year, but by and large people tend to return to their normal way of living once the holiday passes, and they start looking toward the next one. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, however, I sometimes wonder. As lovely as it is to dedicate a special day for celebrating love and romance, and expressing it, for those who have a special person in their lives, why do we consign our most ardent and thoughtful acts to just one day each year? Obviously it would become a bit much if we were constantly buying presents, cards, chocolates, flowers, having candlelit dinners, on a regular basis. To do this would be to diminish the specialness of when we do do such things. Part of their impact comes from the fact that we don’t do those things all of the time. But we could certainly do them more often. Do we only love our partners that one special day, and the rest of the year just sort of

muddle along? We could, in fact, make sure to take time out to express our appreciation for the presence of our beloved in our life much more often than we do. We might consider every now and then bringing a surprise home, doing something thoughtful, or spontaneously planning a romantic evening. This helps in keeping the core of the bond strong, to remind each other on a deep level that we value the love that we share, and most importantly, the person we share it with. But what would the balance look like? Where is the “sweet spot” between doing something neither too often nor too rarely, so that the element of surprise is kept, while predictability or expectation is avoided? What I’m getting at here, is that I think celebrating Valentine’s Day is of course wonderful, and at the same time, we could be spreading those feelings and gestures across the year more consciously and deliberately. Flowers are great any time, and keeping them sporadic and unpredictable is likewise advisable, which will help in keeping the experience fresh and unexpected. Thoughtful gestures, small gifts, random cards, date nights, or anything creatively romantic are all things that help in keeping the connection strong. Likewise, and more importantly, I believe that either partner can do those things; it doesn’t have to be up to the man exclusively (or if you are in a same-sex relationship, whoever plays the seducer role). What will help in keeping the sense of surprise and unpredictability is if both partners take part in this experiment. While chivalry and certain so-called old-fashioned traits might be somewhat out of vogue these days, I propose to bring them back, and bring them back with style, and to share in doing them. It’s great when the man takes time to go the extra mile in surprising his sweetheart, but if his sweetheart is also randomly doing the same thing, then indeed every day could be Valentine’s Day…

Tory Kittles is killing it on USA’s newest Independence Day
by Olivia Soto
ttention all The Walking Dead and Independence Day fans: your new sci-fi drama has arrived for you to casually binge watch for your pleasure on the USA Network.
You’re welcome, in advance. Tory Kittles, star of the new series Colony, plays the brave-hearted character Broussard. The show takes place in Los Angeles and things get taken over by an alien-like force and the City of Angels loses some of its heavenly bliss. “He’s a very complex individual and I love him. He maintains his sense of humanity. He has a huge heart,” says Kittles of Broussard. In the series he feels responsible for the well-being of the community and becomes apart of the “resistance” to fight off the aliens who have invaded their daily lives. “You know, the characters are faced with death and in the moment what do you do in those situations?”
Who knows? Maybe we’ll see him in the next sequel in ten years from now!
“In the moment he [Broussard] would resist,” says Kittles of the strong headedness of his role.
Kittles has a hobby of writing scripts but when it comes to working on Colony, he never has a clue of what’s going to happen next for the cast.
The Walking Dead’s Sarah Wayne Callies also stars alongside the heroic Colony actor.
“Next week we have Colony- on Thursday- and I think people will be surprised. I was surprised for sure.”
Tory has been featured in many dramas such as Olympus Has Fallen, True Detective and Sons of Anarchy.
“I was always surprised reading the script. We would think we knew what was going to happen but then you read it and you’re like ‘whoaaaa’.”
“I’ve been fortunate, they [drama flicks/series] find me,” he says of the pattern reflected in his resume. “It’s all about the story in the script, that’s how I pick the roles I’m interested in. That’s how it works.” “I don’t think ‘Oh I need to be in this movie’. I think ‘This interests me so I could do this’,” adds in the cryptic actor. But if Tory could be cast in any favorite drama of his what movie would he choose? “Ohhh I don’t necessarily have a favorite movie,” says Kittles, but if he had to choose it would be, “Malcom X or Star Wars.”
Coming up next for the actor may be a script he wrote himself, as Kittles did admit to studying a new script in the moment but no word of what it was exactly could be shared just yet. Watch Colony every Thursday at 10 p.m. to get a bite of the new television show that is bound to keep viewers always on their toes and tweeting frantically giving everyone FOMO. Catch up on what you’ve missed quickly because Colony has recently been renewed for a second season! Find out what Tory’s going to be starring in very soon at his Twitter @ToryKittles

SAN FRANCISCO BALLET ANNOUNCES PROGRAM AND CASTING FOR ITS 83rd REPERTORY SEASON OPENING NIGHT GALA THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 2016 AT 8PM
Evening Includes Three Benefit Dinners and a One-Time-Only Gala Performance SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, January 21, 2016 Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson has announced the repertory for San Francisco Ballet’s 83rd Repertory Season Opening Night Gala, with the theme of Provocative, on Thursday, January 21 at 8pm at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. The Gala launches the 2016 Season, which includes three acclaimed full-length productions: Tomasson’s Swan Lake, George Balanchine’s Coppélia, and John Cranko’s Onegin; the North American premiere of William Forsythe’s Pas/Parts; works by a wide variety of choreographers such as Jerome Robbins and Christopher Wheeldon; plus world premieres by Liam Scarlett and Justin Peck. 2016 also marks the 40th anniversary of the prestigious SF Ballet Orchestra, which is widely recognized as one of the best ballet orchestras in the country. Twelve classical and contemporary works and excerpts will be presented as part of this one-night-only program. In addition, following the intermission, the SF Ballet Orchestra will perform “Infernal Dance” from Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird in celebration of their anniversary.
Gala Performance The program will begin with the “Waltz of the Hours” from Alexandra Danilova and George Balanchine’s Coppélia. The original production of the ballet was first performed in 1870 by Paris Opéra Ballet, with choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon. The Danilova/Balanchine production was premiered by New York City Ballet in 1974, with SF Ballet first performing this version on the 2011 Season. The comedic ballet, a co-production with Pacific Northwest Ballet, will be performed in full by the Company on Program 4 of the 2016 Season. Tomasson’s Bartok Divertimento, proclaimed “excellent” by the Bay Area Reporter, was created in 2002 and is set to music by Béla Bartók. Most recently, the finale of the work for four dancers was presented at the 2015 SF Ballet School Student Showcase performance and will be performed by SF Ballet School Trainee Natasha Sheehan and Company members Max Cauthorn, Esteban Hernandez, and Wei Wang. Lorena Feijoo and Vitor Luiz will perform a world premiere by Choreographer in Residence Yuri Possokhov, currently celebrating his tenth year in this position. Dores André and Joan Boada will perform a pas de deux from Christopher Wheeldon’s Carousel (A Dance)©, a 19-minute ballet which was created for New York City Ballet in 2002 and was first performed by SF Ballet in 2007 and last performed a year later. Set to “If I Loved You” by Richard Rodgers (arranged and orchestrated by William David Brohn), the ballet was called “terrific” by the New York Times. Vanessa Zahorian and Taras Domitro will perform a pas de deux from Act III of Tomasson/Possokhov’s Don Quixote. This version of the production was choreographed in 2003, with updated scenic and costume designs by Martin Pakledinaz and lighting design by James F. Ingalls. The original ballet, choreographed by Alexander Gorsky and Marius Petipa, was first premiered in 1869 by the Imperial Ballet in Russia and last performed by SF Ballet on the 2015 Season. Following intermission, the SF Ballet Orchestra will perform “Infernal Dance” from Stravinsky’s Firebird. Jiří Bubeníček’s Gentle Memories was a special co-commission by the Mariinsky Theatre and Youth America Grand Prix for the 2012 YAGP “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” gala at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York. The work features an original score by composer Karen LeFrak and will be performed by Yuan Yuan Tan, Tiit Helimets, Vitor Luiz, and Carlos Quenedit.

Originally created as part of Balanchine’s full-evening work, Jewels, “Rubies” was first performed as part of the full ballet in 1967 by New York City Ballet. SF Ballet first performed the ballet in 1987 and most recently, in 2009. While each of the three jewel-inspired ballets evokes its own mood, “Rubies” is the witty centerpiece ballet, set to the music of Igor Stravinsky. Maria Kochetkova and Pascal Molat will perform a pas de deux from the work. Hans van Manen’s Solo, set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach, was first presented by the Nederlands Dans Theater in 1997. This showcase for three dancers was first performed by SF Ballet in 1999 and last performed by the Company during its 2015 Stern Grove performance. Joseph Walsh, Gennadi Nedvigin, and Hansuke Yamamoto will perform the work. Mathilde Froustey and Davit Karapetyan will perform the Act III pas de deux from Tomasson’s Swan Lake. Set to music by Tchaikovsky, the original production, with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, premiered in 1895 in Russia. The Opening Night Gala décor, by J. Riccardo Benavides of Ideas, employs everything from delicate onyx lace, to vivid fuchsia ostrich feathers. Yards and yards of peekthrough sheer fabric will be intermixed with lush, sensual velvet textures, including lace and interesting geometric patterns. Intermixed with the soft and fluid will be structured, provocative objects. These designs are a prelude to the combination of fluidity and structure that audiences will see at the performance later in the evening. The major influences for the décor included Christian Dior’s 2016 couture fashion show, which presented an elegant balance of pastel flowing gowns, juxtaposed against an almost unpolished, construction-like runway. The second area of influence were the ballet dancers themselves. Rhonda Mahendroo is décor chair.
For those attending the Gala performance only, the “Prosecco Promenade” (featuring complimentary La Marca Prosecco® for all performance ticket holders) will begin at 7pm in the Opera House main lobby. After Party The After Party, sponsored by La Perla, will be held in City Hall from 10pm-1am. Key note speaker of this edition was the acclaimed author and elegance aficionado HUGO JACOMET of the Parisian Gentleman fame. MUSIC EVENT
Snowglobe
by Sason Bishope Parry
Thousands of Snowglobers endure sub-freezing temperatures to ring in the New Year. The 5th annual Snowglobe Music Festival took place at the Lake Tahoe Community College Campus in South Lake Tahoe, California, on December 29th, 30th & 31st and it seems to have hit its stride with a sold-out attendance and lots of great and diverse talent. With temperatures ranging from 36° to 8° and tons of snow on the ground, Snowglobers were more then thrilled to have 3 stages with plenty of great music to keep them moving. Kickoff day highlights included Hippie Sabotage, NGHTMRE, E-40, Galantis and supergroup Jack Ü which brought together two of EDM’s brightest artists Diplo and Skrillex. Day 2 highlights belonged to Lil Dicky, Alison Wonderland, Chet Faker, Eric Prydz and Bay Area native Kaskade who closed out the show with an amazing set and prepping fans for the big final night. New Year’s Eve in itself was part of the attraction for the last day and artists brought their A game with stellar sets by Louis the Child, Run the Jewels, Dillion Francis, Hometown Hip Hop hero G-Easy and Ghostland Observatory. Fans cheered in the New Year with eager enthusiasm and didn’t seem bothered by the cold conditions as they danced until the end. Besides great music, party goers were also entertained by additional attractions from fire performers, ski and exciting snowboard trick demos to impressive art installations. One area of the festival also had cool hammocks and a fire pit for those looking for a little chill time while still enjoying the music and festive vibe. There was also no shortage of good food which included vegan, organic and gluten-free options, coffee, and lots of bars for the 21+ all at reasonable prices. For the high rollers who paid the extra up-charge, the VIP section had a great outside area with prime viewing of the mainstage and heaters to keep you warm as well as more exclusive bars, plenty of seating, and private restrooms. The event overall seemed like a huge success and left no question as to why Snowglobers travel from all over to come to South Lake Tahoe and attend. With an entire year now to plan, excited to see what organizers have in store next. For more info go to: www.snowglobemusicfestival.com

One of music’s biggest hero’s is sadly gone, but not before leaving us with an amazing new album, “Blackstar” and a legacy of music. This song is almost prophetic and haunting, as though Bowie knew his time was up and the video really captures his mood. He will be missed!

No Zodiac Sign knows how to enjoy and indulge in the physical senses like you do. It’s quite a talent. Learn the opposite joy - the joy of choosing to go without, saying no, becoming pure, simple, and innocent. A spiritual discipline of some kind might be the door into appreciating this joy.
