Interview FRAIJ BERLIN For beautiful, esthetic and nice the Dutch have a word: Fraij. And sometimes a Dutchman might leave his country to create something new. Furniture designer and photographer Albert Dijkman is one of those. In 2012 he teamed up with Mischa Olma in Berlin. Under the name of FraijBerlin they offer modern and yet timeless funiture from French country style, loft furniture to furniture from boxes of wine. The mix of Dutch Steigerhout design - which is characterized by the use of rough textured construction planks - and a sophisticated edgy Berlin twist creates a unique handwriting in workmanship and design. by Scarlett Mahneke
FSHN: Albert, what brought you from Amsterdam to Berlin? Was it the dream of Fraij or just the vision of something new in a creative city? A: Non of these It was the romantic version. A German girl took me from Amsterdam to Berlin. After living here for a while, the city gave me the creative inspiration. And with Amsterdam still in my heart, I combined the Dutch art of making interior design with the roughness of Berlin. Et voila, Fraij Style was born. FSHN: Mischa, what brought you to Berlin, how did you meet Albert? M: I studied product design at the lake of Konstanz in Southern Germany. Meanwhile I made a lot of contacts in Berlin and when I finished university it didn’t took long to be a real ‘Berliner’ as well! In Konstanz I already designed furniture and thanks to the girl that took Albert to Berlin we met and we found out that we have the same passion for product and interior design.
24
FSHN: What is the spirit of Fraij? FB: Create, create.. and create! What we like to do is making eyecatching interior concepts with a team of the best people, who feel free to make the most interesting Fraij-designs. Everyone has his own skills and we like to design together. This results in that a Fraij product can be a mixture of several materials or designs. FSHN: Please describe your portfolio in your own words. FB: With our roots in the world of art, creativity, communication and psychology, we like to merge all those ‘worlds’ together in our concepts. For us it’s important not only to make good looking things, but also to involve and play with the emotions or feelings you will get entering a Fraij styled interior. We start our interior concepts always from the thought what the costumer wants to communicate and how that fits in the total concept. Its not only about the furniture, it’s the total atmosphere that makes an interior concept unique. With rough materials like concrete or steel combined with the elegant touch of handmade products and natural elements, in a minimalistic way, we can get the best out of every interior. FSHN: What inspires you? FB: The materials. Combined with the different skills of the Fraij team members, magic can happen quickly. And of course Berlin and its inhabitants. Besides that we find our inspiration in Scandinavian, Dutch and industrial design.
FSHN: Can you give us a brief overview of the process when you create for example a new table? How do you approach a new design, how long does it take? FB: Creating new furniture or making new interior designs always starts with looking at the wishes of the costumer or the possibilities of an interior. Like I said before, it’s not only about the furniture, it’s about the total concept. When we have all this information we start to work as a team and we only stop when we all got the feeling that we found the best solution possible. FSHN: What was the most challenging piece of furniture you have ever worked on? FB: Actually every piece of furniture or concept is challenging. But to answer the question about one challenging piece of furniture, I would say that it was a big table made of old wine boxes. A customer brought us old wine boxes from Europe, and we were the lucky ones to have the opportunity to play around with that. This resulted in a 3.5 by 1.5 meter table, with an interesting pattern of big and small pieces of old wine boxes wood.
WINTER ISSUE 2016
FSHN: Do you have a favourite piece of furniture by Fraij? A: Yes, it is the first table I made in Berlin. That wood pattern, roughness and the edgy details were already in this design! I made this table of wood that construction workers gave me as leftover. And that was actually the start of Fraij. FSHN: Do you have a designer or era that influences you? FB: What is your favourite all time classic we might know? I think we like to combine a lot of styles together and try to look at furniture from a different approach. But designer Piet Hein Eek who started to build furniture from wood leftovers, and who didn’t care about the ‘standard’ in furniture design, is one of the persons who influenced us. FSHN: If you have a customer from abroad who wishes for something unique, how do you handle it? FB: For us it’s the best to have a direct an open communication with the costumer. With the materials and designing possibilities we have, we have to know if we are free to ‘go crazy’ or that we have to visit the place and know where to start from and listen to the customer wishes, or ‘listen’ to the opportunities a place can have. FSHN: When you think of San Francisco, what comes to your mind? How would you describe the creative spirit? FB: The hardest question of all, because unfortunately I have never visited the city! But it is high on my bucket list, and what comes in my mind as an ‘Amsterdammer’ is the liberality and the gay culture. The liberal way of life fits me very well, and I think Berlin right now, and the last decades is the German San Francisco! In such an atmosphere creativity is not tied up to rules.

WINTER ISSUE 2016
FSHN: Something personal in the end: Let us know something about the men behind Fraij. If you had a perfect day, what would it be like? FB: At the moment life is about working a lot… and about working with a great team. FSHN: How do you see Fraij’s future? Would you like to expand or would you rather keep it small to guarantee a personal service? FB: Of course, as a company, we like to expand. But for us the most important values will always be the personal service and the freedom to create. I think these are the strengths of Fraij. Even though I think that in the nearby future we will have to go for two strict furniture collections a year for private customers. That doesn’t mean that the personal service will not stay, but the opportunities to have a 100% customized product aren’t realistic anymore. But the products will always stay unique, handmade and designed from different designers.
So the only answer I can give is what a perfect day is like at this moment in my life. It is making the next new best interior concept in the world, with all of us. It is about realizing that in talking, designing and the whole process of creating, the best things we can achieve are also the magical moments we have as a team!
FSHN: Money makes the world go round. How much do people have to spend to own something by Fraij? FB: It depends on how much they would like to spend. The prices start roughly at 500€ and right now end at approximately 10.000€. Of course I’m talking about the furniture itself. For an interior concept we can adapt to the wishes and wallet of the costumer, but for us it’s important to always get the best out of that what somebody can afford. FSHN: Since you also offer furniture from boxes of wine what is your favourite red? FB: “Cheers!” Red wine is a good start, and when it’s a dry red wine even better. But I think the person you have a drink with is the most important! If the conversation is wonderful the wine taste much better!

and sustainability. It’s a topic that FSHN publisher Elisabeth Thierot has integrated into her own brand, Skincare Line Replete, one of the few high-end products that are also vegan and free from animal testing.
In this month’s issue, we are starting our little trip with brief introduction of the label; and we’ll continue with stories that focus on material, and marketing an eco-friendly high-end fashion label.
The whole FSHN team would be delighted to give you taste of this trending topic, and show you how consciousness can be lived in high-end fashion without the use of fur, leather, or animal tested products. We honestly wish we could give you a glimpse of the amazing feel of the materials that UMASAN is using for their collections; it is indescribable, and definitely worth a walk into one of the multiple stores that stock the collection.
Next to visiting the designers in their studio, and a few little extra goodies, we will also provide ”behind the scene” reports from UMASAN attending trade fairs, and Fashion Week shows worldwide, including New York, Paris and Tokyo.
UMASAN and sustainability The mission of UMASAN and the main focus of the designer duo address a topic that should be mandatory for all of us, which is fair trade and production,

And last but not least, UMASAN is working on a men and women collection, as well as a unisex line. We hope that with this little intro, we aroused your curiosity to where you will join us on this amazing journey for the next few months and take the opportunity to gain knowledge by following this amazing success story.

Our high end collection is dedicated towards the new “change avant-garde” who likes comfort and taste without sacrificing responsibility and consciousness. “Our demand and at the same time our motivation was to create something new which goes far beyond the production of clothing and establishment of a fashion brand. As innovation in the fashion industry also means to correct luxury mistakes, to re-define collective values and to increase individual values. This was reason enough for us to found UMASAN in 2010.” The UMASAN style is marked by a timeless expression of color and design, which is conspicuous through details. The Japanese cut is anatomic/functional. UMASAN provides clothes for every occasion and boundless movement: whether in business, while travelling or during leisure time. INNOVATION IN EACH FIBRE – pioneering, farsighted, brave, natural! CHOOSING QUALITY – ORGANIC & VEGAN FABRIC STRATEGY Switch from conventional to vegan and organic fabrics with Certification for innovative yarns. These methods are designed to respect healthy, safety and environmental production. Exclusive vegan fabrics are selected to focus on animal rights - usage of natural technology yarns allows increasingly high levels of aesthetic ergonomic and ecological performance. Soy, Tencel, Modal and Bamboo are innovative, extraordinary organic and healthy yarn derived from vegan fibre, stimulates blood circulation and is a natural antibacterial agent, allowing the skin to breathe.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION With our Collections we searched and strengthen the relationship of the self and his inner world and his dedication to it, in which they refuse any form of dogmatism. UMASAN is a aesthetic homage to a unpolished and functional design. The creations are sincere and natural, a subtle phenomena. They melt together with the body and harmonize it into its infinite variety. While a general applicable ideal is that a whole perfect symmetrical illustrates perfection, UMASAN Collection shows that the natural asymmetry and irregularities followed the shape of the beauty of nature. “Our goal is to develop a collection, which has always been part of the person who wears it. Clothes which seem somehow familiar, help being yourself.”
The brand UMASAN is much more than fashion, it is their world, dedicated towards all things esthetic, sustainable, vegan and mindful. “Our demand and at the same time our motivation was to create something new which goes far beyond the production of clothing and establishment of a fashion brand. ATELY SPEAKING
by Joyce Darkoh
Every year ends with multiple New Year’s resolutions; getting rid of bad habits, seeing more friends outside social media, changing our lives around completely. Oh yes, excessive behavior during the last days of December is often justified with a brand new start and a promise to do better starting from day one in January.
But a change is always good, and one of the good ones with FSHN is this little column that will keep you updated with stuff that moves the Fashion world and you as a consumer and reader, and hopefully invite you to form your own opinion and get involved. Talking about getting involved - you may wonder who I am. First and out of all, I am a Fashion lover. I live for it to the point that I’m not only running my own label but I professionally studied the influence of fashion on men and women and their shopping behavior. This alone may tell you that there is a lot to talk about, especially if you ever planned and actually executed a joined shopping trip with your spouse. Do I need to say more? Well, actually yes - the fact that NY Fashion Week Men’s is entering its second solo season, which gives us hope to believe that men finally figured out how important and addictive fashion is.
To go on with this thought, this would then be a good month to try talking your spouse into some fashionable experiments in form of some colorful socks, a dairy pocket square, or a patterned dress shirt under the usual office suit. As a matter of fact, why not grab the latest issue of a men’s magazine instead of your usual women lecture and browse through the fashion pages while he is around. Make a few remarks about how manly this coat or combo looks on this guy here, and throw in a little ‘I could see that on you’, in your most ‘general talk’ voice. You may experience a little miracle by the month of February or March, but of course, you will acknowledge it with a “looks good” and then move on with your errands while your inner self just wants to thank the world and kiss the floor. Wouldn’t this be an amazing New Year’s resolution to start with? I think it’s worth a try. Stay FSHNate Joyce

BLOGGER INTERVIEW
MEET
CHEZ RUST King’s Lynn is a small district of Norfolk, a county north of London,UK, with a population of nearly 43,000. It’s a market town with a scenic landscape, and a straightforward community, and so different from the fashionably pulsing London. But surprisingly, it is the hometown of the insanely rising Instagram blogger CheRust, who has caught the attention of multiple brands and fellow bloggers with his great taste for fashion. At almost 70k followers on IG, Chez reached social media stardom, way before he even considered starting his own fashion blog (now in planning for 2016). Multiple high-end brands and social media agencies are reaching out to the 23- year old smart looking British on a daily basis offering him lucrative collaborations; a privilege that is usually held by only a handful menswear bloggers.
@chezrust
FSHN: You are one of the upcoming instagram bloggers in Europe and that at a very young age. What encouraged you to start this journey? CZ: I’ve always followed menswear accounts as I’m very into my clothes and dressing well, and I started to think to myself that I could do what some of these pages were doing and around may 2015 i decided to start posting my favourite outfits etc. and it has gone from there. I never expected it to go the way it has done. FSHN: You have reached a large crowd of followers on Instagram and Facebook. Who are your average followers? CZ: I would say to start with most of my followers were feme but since posting more fashion I have a lot of guys following me now getting inspiration for there outfits from mine which I love to feel like I am inspiring people.
56
by Joyce Darkoh
FSHN: Can you describe your personal style? CZ: I’d say simple but effective. I’m not too extreme with what I wear, anyone can wear what I do. But I just make sure I’m comfortable in what I’m wearing and keep it cool. FSHN: There has been a drastic change among men and Fashion in the last few years. What are your thoughts on this? CZ: I think it’s great to see the progression between men and fashion. A lot more guys now take pride in their appearance and I don’t see anything wrong with looking and feeling good about yourself. FSHN: How do you get inspired of what to wear and blog next? CZ: The smallest thing can inspire me. I don’t plan on what to wear too much it’s however I’m feeling on the day to what I’ll throw on.

FSHN: Who is Chez Rust outside social media? What do you do in your spare time? CZ: I’m big into my fitness and football so I spend most of my spare time in the gym and playing football. I’ve grown up in love with football once being in a pro clubs academy as a youngester. I love to eat out a lot too so myself and my girl are often out eating some good food and shopping. FSHN: How effective, do you think, is your cooperation with brands? Who approaches you for collaborations? CZ: I hope that the work I do with the brands I have worked with has been as effective as possible I always try to make my posts something that will get the best possible interactions. I get approached all the time by clothing, watch, jewellery companies wanting to work with me which is crazy when I think about it have some of the brands that I have worked with already when I am so new to this industry. FSHN: Lately, a lot of young guys are starting their own menswear blog with more or less success. What is your recommendation and advice for them? CZ: Do you! Don’t try to copy other guys styles or themes, obviously take inspiration but don’t end up having a blog that looks exactly the same as others. Network and post things that will make other accounts want to repost you. I like to post everything other day. FSHN: What are your next steps and goals? CZ: Just to keep working hard and making the progression I have been making. Like I said I never expected things to go aswell as they have so I just want to keep pushing things in the right direction and make the most of any opportunity that comes my way. A successful year is a must.

When to Shine & When To Sparkle!
To be lucky enough to have a collection of jewelry is a very special treat. However, it is extremely easy to be caught up in the glitter and sparkle and overdo it. The largest discrepancy I find is that day and evening jewelry seem to get confused. There are certain aspects of jewels that are obviously only appropriate for evening wear, such as a tiara, and then there are many more gray areas in which I find rule breakers abundant. Wedding rings are the exception to the rule, no matter how large and flashy they are. One can wear an engagement ring and wedding band all the time, and there is no etiquette with respect to the rock being too large. However, this does not apply to cocktail rings. As the name suggests, cocktail rings should not be worn before cocktail hour. A cocktail ring, typically a colored diamond or other colored stone, is meant to make your evening ensembles all the more elegant. To offset the mundane qualities of the day, we need to emphasize the special moments during the evening. What better way to do that than with jewelry?
by George Mickum
less it’s a specific evening watch. During the day, any watch is acceptable, no matter the size or the number of carats. A woman can feel free to wear the XL Rainbow diamond Rolex if she feels so inclined. Even if the watch is dripping in diamonds, it can be worn during the day. However, past the cocktail hour, a watch must be of a more bracelet-style design. This is another gray area of fashion etiquette. Basically, if you feel the watch is distinguished enough from your day watch, it can be worn as an evening watch.
For day jewelry, one should attempt to shine rather than sparkle. Precious metals, enamels, and other creative materials are a perfect addition to your wardrobe. Small diamonds can be appropriate, but a stone larger than that used in a pave setting might be too much. If the diamonds surround other larger stones or are merely a detail, the piece can be appropriate for day wear. Keep in mind that your more special pieces should be reserved for the evening. If you must wear a larger stone during the day(some people cannot resist), ponder having it set in wood or polished smooth to keep it a unique piece Watches are a sticky subject, especially for women. separate from your evening collection. DESIGNER DREAMS “I don’t always remember my dreams but when I do, they’re consistent. The other night I dreamt I was walking in a field. There was nothing distinct about the field except that I was alone. A couple of snakes were crossing my path. [This isn’t all that strange because snakes are the most common motif of my dreams]. In this specific dream, the two snakes were slithering. When I focused on them, the clearer they became. There weren’t just two anymore; the entire ground of this field was composed of snakes slithering under my feet. I couldn’t feel them because there were so many. As I looked away from my immediate path, all I could see were snakes. The ground of the field was like an oily, iridescent surface. What does this dream mean?” Carmen Marc Valvo
THE INTERPRETATION
by Lauren Lawrence
The snake symbol, often interpreted as phallic in nature, also represents the presence of evil. In this generic sense, snakes are perceived as a warning. Having snakes cross your path indicates worries over being crossed by someone untrustworthy in the future. If the oily, unguent field is your view of what lies ahead, you must proceed with caution. For you are not on terra firma.
With no grass in the field, the wish of the dream is to surmount this lowly dark path: Not only do you stay above those with ill intent; you walk all over them, braving onward, and in the process gain control of the situation. Not feeling the snakes indicates that emotions have flattened. There is the sad recognition of having become inured to what is sinister in this world. Only a strong focus brings back elucidation.

COVER STORY
LUISE WILL
Our Creative Director, Ava Pivot, interviews the stunning Luise Will to learn more about the “One Million Dollar Face“ from Germany photographer AVA PIVOT make-up FRANZISKA WILKE using MAC Cosmetics stylist AMANDA SAMANTA BROOKE postproduction BenPPR model LUISE WILL @LOUISA MODELS model NICK ANDROBIK @MODELFABRIK
FSHN: Hello Luise, we are so happy to have you as our cover model for this issue of FSHN. Tell us a little about yourself. What do you do, and where are you from? LW: Hello! I am so excited to be on the cover! My name is Luise Will, I was born August 2, 1994 in Rostock, Germany, located at the Baltic Sea. Currently, I live in a small village with 2,600 people next to Rostock, which has a population of roughly 200,000. That is why I am so happy that modelling gives me the opportunity to travel to bigger cities. FSHN: You were one of the finalists at the successful TV show “Germany´s Next Topmodel“ with Heidi Klum. How was it for you to be part of such a big event? LW: “Germany´s Next Topmodel“ was one of the best experiences in my life. It was so much fun testing out everything, like living in Los Angeles for 3 months, and to learning a lot about modelling. We also had the opportunity to learn a lot from Heidi Klum, who is one of the greatest models of all times. Can you imagine a better teacher? I tried learning a lot from her, but it definitely wasn´t always as easy as it looked like on TV or images, although it seems to come to her quite naturally. She has a great aura and understands her job from inside out.
FSHN: Luise, you were in the United States with Heidi Klum for a while – in which cities did you stay? What castings did you attend, and what modelling jobs were you able to secure while there? LW: We stayed in a mansion in the Hills in Los Angeles for three months. From there, we traveled to several other locations. We went to Hawaii, Mexico, New York and other places around L A. In New York, we went to a couple of castings for NY Fashion Week, which included a few German magazines and labels. I was blessed to walk for Kenneth Cole, which was a lot of fun. FSHN: Oh wow, New York Fashion Week! That is an amazing experience for a model. We bet, it makes you want to go back there again and get up on the NYFW catwalk, doesn’t it? LW: Of course! I would love to be at NYFW again. It was really awesome. I hope I can do that again.
FSHN: Tell us something about your goals as a model and a person. LW: As a model, it would be a dream come true to book a big make-up or fragrance campaign, like CoverGirl or Chanel. In my private life, my goals are being happy and healthy, enjoying life, having a great family and living a balanced life. FSHN: One of the world’s best model bookers (IMG Models, NY) previously said that you have a “million dollar face”. That is such a great honor, isn’t it? With so many renowned supporters on your side, do you see yourself returning to the United States to persue an international modelling career? LW: Of course, I was very flattered that a booker from IMG made such a nice compliment, and yes, I would definitely love to model in the States. It would be a new exciting path for me, which would also broaden my horizon and challenge myself to see how far I can make it. The USA is called the land of endless opportunities for a reason, so we´ll see what opportunities may come up.

The Year 2015 in Terms Of Fashion 2015 brought us many fashionable moments, and some were so revolutionary that we decided to capture them in short paragraphs: by Joyce Darkoh • NY Fashion Week introduces its first season of men’s collection, and follows the pattern of London and Paris. In addition, Mercedes Benz pulls out of NYFW and provides space for a new sponsor, which is Lexus. • Kanye West presents his first streetwear collection “Yeezy” in collaboration with Adidas during NYFW FW15. The collection initially received the worst critics but later turned out to be Adidas’ bestseller in years. • A few other renowned fashion brands collaborated went “out of the box” and showed their debut collections with new head designers: Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli; Anthony Vaccarello for Versus Versace; Peter Copping for Oscar de la Renta; Public School for DKNY • Olivier Rousteing (“Balmain”) joins the H&M designer cooperation for the most successful RTW collection in the history of the Swedish manufacturer. The campaign that features Insta-stars like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid creates a hype never seen before in a fashion collaboration • A few designers went through some voluntary and involuntary changes: Raf Simons leaves Dior after only three and a half years; Alexander Wang leaves Balenciaga; Albert Elbaz says good-bye to Lanvin • A big surprise for any lucky chosen one to receive the 43th issue of the legendary Pirelli calendar, as the images portrait women that glance through an inner femininity rather than physical beauty. Women like Amy Schumer, Serena Williams, Patti Smith and other amazing women join the line-up. • Apple introduces the Apple watch, a wearable gadget and an extension to the iPhone. Several fashion celebrities such as Christy Turlington, Anna dello Russo or Katy Perry are seen with different luxury editions of the Apple-watch.

MODEL PORTRAIT
NICK
ANDROBIK
I started modeling at the age of 16, when my sister signed me up for a small hair model agency in Berlin. For a year, I started off doing a few jobs under that agency. I then stopped modeling for a while to focus on basketball and school. About two years ago, I started to get back into modelling and got to know some cool photographers in Berlin. We actually started hanging out together and established great friendships. After doing some modelling next to my school work, I signed up with a new model agency in Berlin. From there on, I had the chance to do some amazing jobs including walking for Berlin Fashionweek, and making some new contacts with cool people! I have to admit that I never really imagined modelling for a profession, even though I love every single moment of shooting, hanging out with all these people and creating art! I never run out of energy to the point that it saddens me every time a shooting day comes to an end because I have so much power and energy left to shoot longer.
A lot of people told me to give modelling a serious consideration after seeing some of my publications. That is one reason why I decided to make modeling my priority again right after my degree about half a year ago. I Started to shoot with many different photographers and really enjoy being with creative. I’m a very creative person myself, and I love art and photography; therefore, I truly admire my job, especially when I get to shoot with different photographers and create a different kind of art at every shoot. One of my biggest dreams for now is making it really big with modelling. I would love to work as a full time model, and be so successful to be able to work as long as possible in this industry! My goal is to travel the world for modeling, meet a lot more creative people, and exchange my thoughts with them. But the ultimate goal is creating the best images possible and walking for big designers. Modelling has definitely become a passion

Heidi Klum, Alessandra Ambrosio, Diane Kruger and Keira Knightley are just a few stars who call on celebrity hair stylist Wendy Iles to look gorgeous at events like the Oscar or beauty campaigns. She is also frequently booked for big international commercials such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Goldwell and Schwarzkopf. Encouraged by her celebrity clients, Wendy decided to launch her own product called Iles Formula, a 3-step hair system. The idea came when she realized during her work that she required a high performance product that was effective instantly and applicable as simple as shampoo, conditioner and serum. But more importantly, she needed a product that worked for any kind if hair. What makes Iles Formular so effective? The product is paraben-free and made off 16 essential ingredients that are all handpicked, such as vegetal root juice, tucuma palm, macrobola tree seeds, silk proteins, seed butter, macadamia nut and oil, and aragon from the Amazon forest, Australia, Morocco, and Japan.
What are the 3 steps to apply the product? Step 1 the Iles Formula shampoo is made out of anti-oxidant rich ingredients, silicon and sulfates that rinse your hair without dehydrating or color fading effects. It restores the hair shaft, and repairs split ends and rough texture giving your hair a healthy look and volume. Step 2 the Iles Formular conditioner works like magic on damaged and straw hair as it instantly transforms it into a smooth and untangled silky perfection, after only one treatment. Step 3 the Iles Formular serum is the most essential part of the hair system. It applies the final silky finish to your hair and lets it shine without any greasy look. Above all, it protects your hair from any environmental hazards. It can be used in wet or dry hair. I’m so glad I got to meet and assist Wendy Iles personally. She is such an amazing woman with a beautiful soul and a deep passion for hair. Once you tried out Iles Formula on your own hair and feel the softness and shine you will definitely understand the idea and concept of her product.

BALI ….Is a province of Indonesia and belongs to a group of island in the Indian Ocean with tropical average climate. At a size of 5,561 km², Bali is by far the largest city of its equally named province; its capital is Denpasar located in the southern part of the island.
Bali is considered to be the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands and is separated from Java by the 2,5km long Bali strait. The north-south rebound is 95km, while the stretch from east to west is 145km. Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are smaller islands that also belong to the province of Bali. Bali itself is a rather new island, which is only separated from the Malayan mainland by three relatively low rivers. Throughout the time, these riverbeds fell dry repeatedly, and as a result of that
the fauna and flora of Bali does not differ too much from the mainland. The Wallace Line, which is considered to be the boundary separating the eco-zone of Asia and the Australian eco-zone, runs between Bali and Lombok. Due to the long existence of this deep ocean line, the flora and fauna of both islands different strongly from each other.

The Balinese actually believe that mount Agung is the axis of the universe and the home of gods. It is also considered to be the axis of the Balinese coordination system. The ten kilometer wide craters of Batur with the stratovolcano Gunung Abang (2153m) as their highest point in north-west of Bali connect to the west of mount Agung. These craters are still active at least four times a year due to the subduction of the Sahul shelf as part of the Australian continent under the Sunda shelf as part of the Eurasian shelf. It’s also responsible for the volcano activities on the nearby islands. The Sunda Arc, a chain of vulcanoes formed into island arc, marks this active convergent boundary between both, the Eastern Eurasian and the Australian plate. It also forms the seabed of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.
Most of Bali’s mountains are of volcanic origin and cover approximately two third of the total island. The highest volcano, Gunung Agung (big mountain),

BALI is definitely a mustdo on every travelling list as it provides activities for any form of tourism, let it be the adventurer, the honeymooners, nature-lover, or simply for a trip into the history of our world’s existence and origin.
Denpasar is the largest city with a population of approximately 500,000. While it is Bali’s provincial capital, there are other important cities such as Singaraja, which is the old colonial capital and situated in the north coast of the island. Kuta, a beach resort in the urban area of Denpasar, and Ubud, a cultural centre located in the north, are other important cities worth mentioning. Bali is foremost known for its scenic beaches. Small uncluttered coves that are lapped by crystal oceans and long stretches of waves and wind swept sands makes Bali to one of the most breathtaking holiday places on earth. Some of the best beach fronts include Nusa Dua beach, a wide spread front and paradise for surfing and snorkeling tourists because of its low currents and waves; Bias Tugal beach, which is secretly hidden nearby Padang

Padang Padang beach reached unexpected fame after it was featured in the movie Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts. Breast cancer kills. Wear the the Ribbon, there is strength in numbers! Estee Lauder’s “Breast Cancer Awareness” campaign has raised donations to support research for the last 23 years. In this time they have raised $58M, but the fight against cancer goes on. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, caused the most cancer related deaths in women, and is the biggest killer of women between 30 and 60 years of age. The fourth of February is World Cancer Day. Breastcancer. 12 small letters. Whether out of fear or from the viewpoint of the nonafflicted, the topic is avoided in generall in society. One thinks of pink ribbons, of bald headed women stoically fighting the fight of their lives in the fight for their lives, of cancertreatments, and a little of the episode in Sex in the City in which HBO’s writes cancer into Samantha Jones’ script to show us that even the strongest women are not immune to this sickness. A visionary, and the birth of the Pink Ribbon In 1992 Evelyn H. Lauder founded the Estée Lauder cmpanie’s “Breast Cancer Awareness” campaign. Shortly before this and together with Alexandra Penny, the then Chief Editor of the US magazine “Self”, she designed/developed the Pink Ribbon which has become the international symbol of the fight against breast cancer. At the time the illness was completely taboo, but Evelyn believed that eventually breast cancer would be curable and set herself the goal to raise public awarness of the disease. The disease is still in many cases uncurable, but the vision of raising awareness has been achieved. The Campaign is by now active in over 70 countries. Approximately $46M has been donted to 185 research projects by Ev.H.L’s “Breast Cancer Research Fondation” (BCRF). The goal is to raise $6M anually.
138
Small statements, big effects. Estée Lauder is currently running an online campaign showing every face which can carry a message to the world. On the website the offer the possibility to upload a selfie, accompanied by a statement about your personal fight against breast cancer. For each uploaded Statement Estée Lauder finances half an hour of research with $25, and would like to donate $25,000 dollars while gaining the public’s attention. The same applies to every used “#BCAstrength” hashtag at Instagram. From the pictures uploaded there will be a globally accessible multimedia project produced for World Cancer Day. Approximately every 8th woman is afflicted with breast cancer at some point in her life. Known under the technical term “mastocarcinoma” breast cancer makes up almost a third of cancers occuring in women, and is the most common form of the disease in western women. The disease kills more women than any other disease, therefore international programs for the early detection and treatment should help to reduce the mortality rate in the future. Approximately one in eight women will suffer from breast cancer in their lives. Since 1970 the incidence has doubled, however fewer women are now dying from the disease. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women Between 30 and 60 years old. The five-year survival rate in America is 80-90%. In poor countries these numbers alter dramatically: It kills approximately 72% of all cancer patients with moderate or low incomes. Worldwide there are estimated by the WHO (2013) approximately 1.68 million new cases of breast cancer and 522,000 deaths. Also worrying is the growing number of cases amongst young women in the US, for which there is no satisfactory explanation. Men can also become afflicted, but the number of cases is comparatively low.
WINTER ISSUE 2016
What are the causes of this disease?
Mammiograms, lumps, early detection
Only about 5% of cases are hereditary in origin. More commonly genetic changes are responsible for raising the risk. The probablilites of contracting breast cancer raise when two or more immediate relatives are afflicted. This is also true of ovarian cancer. For this reason the well known Hollywood star Angelina Jolie took the precautionary measure of complete mastectomy and hysterectomy. The theory that the ingestion of hormone-containing preparations such as the contraceptive pill increases the risk of the disease is not fully understood. Also studies have shown that left-handers have up to twice the risk of contracting pre-menopausal breast cancer than right-handers. Other risk factors are manifold: being severely overweight drastically increases the risk (2.5 times), as well as heavy long-term smoking (35% - 50%), and a daily alcohol intake of more than 20g for women, and lack of exercise (10%).
Over 80% of lumps in the breats are detected accidentally by women themselves. Because the lumps are usually already quite large by this stage, the prognosis is usually poor. If the lumps were discovered while they are too small for notice by touch, the mortality would probably decrease by about 25%, but mammograms on large breasts are usually fruitless. The early self-identification (self breast exam) is generally difficult because it is not possible to feel every carcinoma (carcinoma). On the other hand, however, only one in twelve lumps is malignant. Selfexamination is still advised as it increases awareness of breast cancer. The recommendation is self-examination should be carried out shortly after the beginning or end of the menstrual cycle. The US Preventive Services Task Force found benefits from screening in women between the age of 40 and 70, while regular screening is recommended for women between 50 and 70 years. Unfortunately, this is just as problematic as the self-examination. So, there is still much to investigate and much ground to cover.

Hello everyone. ‘Tis the season to be jolly as we near the end of another year and what better way to celebrate then with the gift of music as we say goodbye to 2015. Check out these new music releases now; Bjork, Dave Gahan & Soulsavers, Ceelo Green, Deftones, Grimes, Eric Prydz and many more. In music news, Music mogul Jerry Heller, the former manager of N.W.A. and cofounder of Ruthless Records recently filed a defamation lawsuit against everyone involved in the making of the Straight Out Of Comption movie including Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Easy-E’s estate, Universal, NBC and others saying that he was portrayed as a sleazy manager who took advantage of Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. He claims that he never gave permission to use his likeness or parts of his book that included a Suge Knight scene as well as other misleading facts. Heller is suing for more then $110M. In other music news, the late grunge icon Kurt Cobain has many diehard fans, but will they for out money to buy a lock of his hair? This is beyond creepy lol, but its true, his hair is on the auction block starting at a mere $4000. Also on-sale is a green cardigan the Nirvana front-man wore at an appearance of MTV unplugged. In event news, the 1st annual Phantasm – Karnival Of Mischief, which took place October 31 at the San Francisco Armory, sold out in advance with over 4000 + Halloween revelers with great performances by Thievery Corporations DJ Rob Garza and also the Polish Ambassador. The Big One comes to Bill Graham civic December 31 to ring in the New Year with Flaming Lips, Geographer and many others. The Buku Music & Art Project lands in New Orleans again on March 11 & 12, 2016 and if last years great line-up was any indication, this is sure to be one event to plan for. By Sason Bishope Parry
